Entanglement With Neutral Atoms In The Simulation Of Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of One-Dimensional Spin Models, Anupam Mitra
Entanglement With Neutral Atoms In The Simulation Of Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of One-Dimensional Spin Models, Anupam Mitra
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Quantum entanglement is a key ingredient for quantum information processing with capabilities beyond that of classical computation. We study the generation and role of entanglement in the dynamics of spin-1/2 models, both for the design of quantum gates for general-purpose quantum computation and for quantum simulation of interacting spin models. We introduce the neutral atom Mølmer-Sørensen gate, involving rapid adiabatic Rydberg dressing interleaved in a spin-echo sequence. We show its robustness to quasi-static experimental imperfections and favorable scaling with the time-energy scales of Rydberg-mediated entanglement generation. In quantum simulation, we consider critical behavior in quench dynamics of transverse field Ising …
Global Fits In The Supersymmetric Georgi-Machacek Model, Yingnan Xu
Global Fits In The Supersymmetric Georgi-Machacek Model, Yingnan Xu
Physics Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with Higgs triplets in the scalar sector. We begin with a review of the Standard Model (SM), particularly the electroweak sector and the Higgs mechanism. In the SM, the Higgs mechanism requires the presence of a complex Higgs doublet to break the electroweak symmetry and endow particles with a mass; this process is called Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking (SSB). Although this is the simplest possibility, higher scalar representations may also contribute to the electroweak breaking process (EWSB). The extent to which these higher representations contribute to EWSB is constrained …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
This book adopts a novel, physics-first approach to quantum measurement, using physical experiments as the basis to describe the underlying mathematical formalism. Topics covered include weak measurements, quantum measurement reversal, quantum trajectories and the stochastic path integral formalism. The theory of quantum measurement is also covered in detail, including discussion of how it can be tested and demonstrated in a laboratory: how to build quantum-limited amplifiers, fundamental noise limits imposed on measurement by quantum mechanics, and the design of superconducting circuits. This text is an excellent introduction for students with a basic understanding of quantum mechanics wanting to learn more …

Petroleum extraction generates substantial quantities of produced water, a challenge compounded by water scarcity in oil-producing regions, notably the Middle East. Leveraging produced water effectively, adhering to environmental standards, can offer a viable solution to the issue of water scarcity. This study explores the potential of mandarin peels as an available, cost-effective adsorbent for treating synthetic aqueous solution simulated to oil-field produced water, specifically targeting phenol, a dangerous pollutant. Employing a batch-mode adsorption unit, six operational factors—phenol concentration, acidity, agitation speed, contact time, adsorbent dose, and temperature—were investigated. Results revealed an inverse relationship between phenol removal and pH, concentration, and …

Quantitative tracking of rapidly moving micron-scale objects remains an elusive challenge in microscopy due to low signal-to-noise. This paper describes a novel method for tracking micron-sized motile organisms in off-axis Digital Holographic Microscope (DHM) raw holograms and/or reconstructions. We begin by processing the microscopic images with the previously reported Holographic Examination for Life-like Motility (HELM) software, which provides a variety of tracking outputs including motion history images (MHIs). MHIs are stills of videos where the frame-to-frame changes are indicated with color time-coding. This exposes tracks of objects that are difficult to identify in individual frames at a low signal-to-noise ratio. …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures represent a novel class of artificial materials created by layering atomically thin planar crystals and offer a promising platform for band structure engineering. Here, we focus on a vdW heterostructure of monolayer graphene (G) coupled to a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We utilize cyclotron resonance (CR) spectroscopy as a primary investigative tool for probing the interacting Dirac fermions in graphene. This work presents a system capable of conducting broadband far- to mid-infrared CR spectroscopy in high magnetic fields and ultra-low temperatures. Our study investigates the influence of the h-BN substrate on the properties of graphene …

Simulating Cross-Scale Solid-Fluid Interaction Phenomena, Jinyuan Liu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Solid-fluid interactions are ubiquitous in nature, and accurate simulation methods are essential for realistic animation, industrial design, and engineering analysis. Com- pared to large-scale coupling phenomena, simulating fine-scale interactions poses extra challenges due to factors such as surface tension, material wettability, and geometric complexity. In this thesis, we pursue novel methodologies to accurately model in- terfacial dynamics between surface-tension fluids and codimensional solids, involving capillary interactions, controllable wettability, and robust contact behaviors. Our ini- tial approach involves developing a novel three-way coupling method, which utilizes a thin liquid membrane, modelled as a simplicial mesh, to facilitate accurate momen- tum transfer, …
Synergistic Exploration Of Spin Glass Physics And Optimization Algorithm Design, Mutian Shen
Synergistic Exploration Of Spin Glass Physics And Optimization Algorithm Design, Mutian Shen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In the past decades, enormous effort has been devoted to the study of low-temperature spin glasses. The undertaken approaches were primarily of two different types. On one hand, various theoretical pictures aimed to capture the essence and rationalize the quintessential physical features of spin glass systems. On the other hand, much work was spent on the design of various algorithms in the hope of finding efficient numerical methods for calculating the ground state or sampling excited states. The latter endeavor has ramifications in fields far beyond those of spin glasses (such as in optimization problems, biology, and the study of …
Flavor Equilibration In Neutron Star Mergers, Ziyuan Zhang
Flavor Equilibration In Neutron Star Mergers, Ziyuan Zhang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Neutron star mergers probe the high-density and high-temperature regime of dense mat- ter. The mergers can reach several times saturation density, and their temperatures can reach up to a hundred MeV. Simulations are essential for a better understanding of dense matter physics and for comparing theoretical predictions with observations. Current merger simulations, based on numerical general relativity and hydrodynamics, lack microphysical inputs. Therefore, the goal of the thesis is to develop models and provide microphysical insights for the theory community and the merger simulation community. Specifically, it includes the state-of-the-art study on flavor equilibration under neutron star merger con- ditions. …

Optical Tweezers Explorations: Dna-Mitoxantrone Interactions At 20pn, Heléna Kathryn Beeloo
Optical Tweezers Explorations: Dna-Mitoxantrone Interactions At 20pn, Heléna Kathryn Beeloo
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Mitoxantrone is a chemotherapy drug that treats a variety of cancers by inhibiting cancer cell replication through intercalation with DNA. Intercalation is the process by which certain small molecules slide flat planar regions in their structure between the base pairs of DNA. This increases the stacking force in the DNA double helix, preventing DNA replication by increasing the force required to separate the two strands that compose the helix. In this study, dual-beam optical tweezers were used to determine the binding kinetics and dissociation constant of Mitoxantrone to single molecules of DNA at 20 pN of force. This study utilized …

This thesis is a culmination of our efforts to construct a robust and flexible opto-mechanical system to fully deliver and control all of the parameters related to the required laser wavelength, polarization, power, beam size, and directionality for both the pump and the re-pump laser beams, delivered from two different lasers, necessary for neutral-atom laser trapping and cooling. This is an extension of the neutral Rubidium Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) at BSU which afford a macroscopic scale collection of cold atoms where the effective governing laws of physics are quantum in nature rather than classical. My predecessors had done work on …

The dynamics of cyclopentadiene (CP) following optical excitation at 243 nm was investigated by time-resolved pump−probe X-ray scattering using 16.2 keV X-rays at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We present the first ultrafast structural evidence that the reaction leads directly to the formation of bicyclo[2.1.0]pentene (BP), a strained molecule with three- and four-membered rings. The bicyclic compound decays via a thermal backreaction to the vibrationally hot CP with a time constant of 21 ± 3 ps. A minor channel leads to ring-opened structures on a subpicosecond time scale.
Current Small-Scale Cmb Constraints To Axionlike Early Dark Energy, Tristan L. Smith, V. Poulin
Current Small-Scale Cmb Constraints To Axionlike Early Dark Energy, Tristan L. Smith, V. Poulin
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
The south pole telescope (SPT) SPT-3G 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) data set (temperature and polarization) is used to place constraints on an axionlike model of early dark energy (EDE). These data do not favor axionlike EDE and place an upper limit on the maximum fraction of the total energy density 𝑓EDE < 0.172 (at the 95% confidence level, C.L.). This is in contrast with Atacama Cosmology telescope’s (ACT) fourth data release (DR4) which gives 𝑓EDE = 0.150 +0.050/-0.078. When combining CMB measurements with measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations and luminosity distance to type Ia supernovae, we show that the tension with the S𝐻₀ ES measurement of the Hubble parameter goes up from 2.6𝜎 with 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑘 to 2.9𝜎 with 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑘+SPT−3G 2018. …

Anharmonic quantum chemical computations reveal a strong, narrow (width = 0.075 μm) band in the 4.3–4.5 μm region of the absorption spectra of the cyano-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CN-PAHs) cyanonaphthalene, cyanoanthracene, c yanophenanthrene, and c yanopyrene. This narro w windo w with intense IR lines implies that CN-PAHs of various shapes and sizes offer little variation in both wavelength and intensity in this region. Subsequently, this band can be used as a tracer for CN-PAHs. The distinct features making up the band are assigned to mixed vibrational states consisting of the CN stretch fundamental and various combination bands, including in-plane …

While the fundamental principles of light-matter interaction are well-understood and drive countless technologies, the world of multiphoton processes remains a fascinating puzzle, holding the potential to drastically alter our understanding of how light interacts with matter at its most basic level [1–4]. This rich interplay of light and matter unveils novel phenomena that can be harnessed for sensing with exceptional precision, as exemplified by multiphoton quantum sensing. This thesis delves into the applications of multiphoton quantum protocols, particularly in imaging, communication, and plasmonic sensing, to surpass classical limitations and achieve enhanced sensitivity. We explore the potential of multiphoton quantum processes, …
A Realist Interpretation Of Unitarity In Quantum Gravity, Indrajit Sen, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel
A Realist Interpretation Of Unitarity In Quantum Gravity, Indrajit Sen, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Unitarity is a difficult concept to implement in canonical quantum gravity because of state non-normalisability and the problem of time. We take a realist approach based on pilot-wave theory to address this issue in the Ashtekar formulation of the Wheeler–DeWitt equation. We use the postulate of a definite configuration in the theory to define a global time for the gravitational-fermionic system recently discussed in Alexander et al (2022 Phys. Rev. D 106 106012), by parameterising a variation of a Weyl-spinor that depends on the Kodama state. The total Hamiltonian constraint yields a time-dependent Schrodinger equation, without semi-classical approximations, which we …
Bioactive Glass Bead Characterization: Further Applications In Passive Drug Delivery, Marie O. Sykes
Bioactive Glass Bead Characterization: Further Applications In Passive Drug Delivery, Marie O. Sykes
Physics and Astronomy Honors Papers
Bioactive glass beads were discovered for their bone repair properties in 1969. This properties, along with their bactericidalness, high ability to be engineered, bioactiveness and their versatile structures, mark them as excellent candidates for explorations in other biomedical applications in addition to bone repair. One alternative application includes passive drug delivery, especially when the biomaterial is in a porous, microsphere structure. In this work, we first explore various samples of bioactive glass compositions and structures in order to target the best bead for the application of drug delivery. The targeted beads are then thoroughly characterized using optical microscopy, Scanning Electron …

Surface layer optical turbulence values in the form of the refractive index structure function C_n^2 are often calculated from surface layer temperature, moisture, and wind characteristics and compared to measurements from sonic anemometers, differential temperature sensors, and imaging systems. A key derived component needed in the surface layer turbulence calculations is the sensible heat value. Typically, the sensible heat is calculated using the bulk aerodynamic method that assumes a certain surface roughness and a friction velocity that approximates the turbulence drag on temperature and moisture mixing from the change in the average surface layer vertical wind velocity. These assumptions/approximations generally …

Earth’s magnetic field was in a highly unusual state when macroscopic animals of the Ediacara Fauna diversified and thrived. Any connection between these events is tantalizing but unclear. Here, we present single crystal paleointensity data from 2054 and 591 Ma pyroxenites and gabbros that define a dramatic intensity decline, from a strong Proterozoic field like that of today, to an Ediacaran value 30 times weaker. The latter is the weakest time-averaged value known to date and together with other robust paleointensity estimates indicate that Ediacaran ultra-low field strengths lasted for at least 26 million years. This interval of ultra-weak magnetic …

Analyzing Atmospheric Gravity Waves Over Antarctica And Visualizing Machine Learning Data, Anastasia N. Brown
Physics Capstone Projects
In an effort to streamline the identification of "clean" windows of airglow images in all sky imager data for the ANGWIN experiment, we have developed a Light Gradient Boosted Machine (LightGBM) learning algorithm that sorts "clean" (marked as 0) wave images from "obscured" (marked as 1) images. These "clean" windows are then processed and undergo FFT-spectrum analysis. We have already successfully created LightGBM models that accurately sort through images taken at the Davis, McMurdo, and Halley research stations in Antarctica. Imager data from the Davis and McMurdo station has been fully processed from the years 2012 to 2022 with clean …
Electrochemical Modulation Of Surface Plasmon Wave To Investigate Dna-Based Sensing Platforms And Detection Of Sars-Cov2., Anil Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study offers a thorough comparative analysis of optical and electrical signaling strategies for assessing the electrochemical properties of different redox-labeled DNA-based biosensing platforms. In addition, it illustrates the development of an optical interrogation technique with electrochemical modulation of surface plasmon waves (ECM-SPW) as a route for analyzing and implementing DNA-based hybridization sensors. For those quantitative analyses, we chose a model sensing platform composed of a methylene blue (MB)-modified single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) signaling probe and an unlabeled capture ssDNA probe that complements the signaling probe. Two types of signaling probes were employed in this work: one with MB attached to …

We present an investigation into a hitherto unexplored systematic that affects the accuracy of galaxy cluster mass estimates with weak gravitational lensing. Specifically, we study the covariance between the weak lensing signal, ΔΣ, and the ‘true’ cluster galaxy number count, Ngal, as measured within a spherical volume that is void of projection effects. By quantifying the impact of this covariance on mass calibration, this work reveals a significant source of systematic uncertainty. Using the MDPL2 simulation with galaxies traced by the SAGE semi-analytic model, we measure the intrinsic property covariance between these observables within the three-dimensional vicinity of …
Learning, Optimizing, And Simulating Fermions With Quantum Computers, Andrew Zhao
Learning, Optimizing, And Simulating Fermions With Quantum Computers, Andrew Zhao
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Fermions are fundamental particles which obey seemingly bizarre quantum-mechanical principles, yet constitute all the ordinary matter that we inhabit. As such, their study is heavily motivated from both fundamental and practical incentives. In this dissertation, we will explore how the tools of quantum information and computation can assist us on both of these fronts. We primarily do so through the task of partial state learning: tomographic protocols for acquiring a reduced, but sufficient, classical description of a quantum system. Developing fast methods for partial tomography addresses a critical bottleneck in quantum simulation algorithms, which is a particularly pressing issue for …
Redesign Of X-Ray Irradiator To Expand Research Of Low-Dose X-Ray Radiation, Lauren Ulbrich
Redesign Of X-Ray Irradiator To Expand Research Of Low-Dose X-Ray Radiation, Lauren Ulbrich

The effects of high-dose radiation are well-documented, and are understood to be harmful to the human body. On the other hand, the effects of low-dose radiation are much less understood. There is debate over whether or not there are negative, positive, or no effects at all from low-dose radiation. One of the reasons why these effects are not well known is because there aren't as many studies done on this type of radiation. It is a lot harder to classify the effects of radiation at low doses due to many external factors. However, the Clemson Medical Physics lab has been …
The Potential For Enhancing Tumour Detection In Medical Imaging With Coherent Scatter, Aastha Boora
The Potential For Enhancing Tumour Detection In Medical Imaging With Coherent Scatter, Aastha Boora
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A number of medical disorders may only be diagnosed with the use of medical imaging, and X-rays are commonly used to detect fractures, abnormal masses, and cavities. The penetration power of X-rays enables them to effectively see these structures inside the body. However, since background structures like fat or fibrous glandular tissue have similar absorption coefficients, X-ray radiography often face challenges when imaging soft tissues for cancer/tumour diagnosis. Research has shown the theoretical potential for X-ray phase imaging to increase contrast factors by a factor of 100 or more, which theoretically could result in enhanced visualization of tumours. In addition …

Engineering Silicon Metalenses In Wide Field Revers-Telephoto Optical Systems For Long-Wave Infrared Thermal Imaging, Alfred Anson Moore
Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering
A novel optical system designed to image light emitted from a CO 2 laser (10.6 μm) is presented here. This system utilizes a positive conventional lens and a negative all silicon metalens. Demonstrated here is the ability of metalenses to replace a combination of optical elements to produce more compact and light-weight optical systems. It also shows how metalenses can replace comparatively expensive custom-manufactured lenses. Several systems that utilize meta-surfaces are explored, including positive and negative metalenses, a meta-corrector, a metalens doublet imaging system that corrects for 0 th -order images overlapping 1 st -order images, and several telephoto optical …

Superconducting qubits have emerged as a promising platform for realizing error-corrected quantum computing. Reaching the minimum threshold for error correction requires scaling the number of qubits well beyond the current numbers while improving their coherence and minimizing their crosstalk. Such daunting demands require groundbreaking innovations in the design of superconducting quantum circuits as well as in engineering the materials integrated into the devices. This thesis explores materials solutions for two different scalability problems: 1) crosstalk and 2) loss due to surface oxidation. The crosstalk is addressed by making voltage-tunable superconductor-semiconductor Josephson junctions (JJs). For the loss due to surface oxidation, …
Photon Number And Waiting-Time Distributions For Superposed Light States, Eric Seglem
Photon Number And Waiting-Time Distributions For Superposed Light States, Eric Seglem
Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nonclassical states of light are characterized by properties which can be explained by the quantum model of light but not the classical model. Such nonclassical properties may be revealed through photon counting statistics. In our research, we have examined the properties for several variations of the superposed state of light. These variations include a superposition of coherent states with evenly distributed phases (GSC state) and a superposition of squeezed vacuum states with evenly distributed phases, with particular attention given to superpositions of two coherent states (cat states). First, we calculate the photon number distribution for each of these states, and …
