Collisional Broadening And Shift Of Rubidium 42D5/2 → N2F Line Shapes With Helium And Electrons, Dillon T. Nice Jun 2024

Collisional Broadening And Shift Of Rubidium 42D5/2 → N2F Line Shapes With Helium And Electrons, Dillon T. Nice

Theses and Dissertations

Line shapes for three rubidium 42D5/2 → n2F transitions were collected using pump probe spectroscopy. Broadening rates for Rb-He collisions ranged from 139–171 MHz/Torr and shift rates ranged from 113–146 MHz/Torr. Then, line shapes were collected at different alkali densities to measure electron density. Electron density had a clear “runaway ionization density threshold” around 1.5×1013 cm−3. The three transitions agreed within 2% on the observed fractional ionization when calculated using the observed Stark width but did not agree on the observed fractional ionization when calculated using the observed Stark shift. These results …

Phase Error Scaling Law In Two-Wavelength Adaptive Optics, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Matthew Kalensky, Michael J. Spencer Jun 2024

Phase Error Scaling Law In Two-Wavelength Adaptive Optics, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Matthew Kalensky, Michael J. Spencer

Faculty Publications

We derive a simple, physical, closed-form expression for the optical-path difference (OPD) of a two-wavelength adaptive-optics (AO) system. Starting from Hogge and Butts’ classic OPD variance integral expression, we apply Mellin transform techniques to obtain series and asymptotic solutions to the integral. For realistic two-wavelength AO systems, the former converges slowly and has limited utility. The latter, on the other hand, is a simple formula in terms of the separation between the AO sensing (i.e., the beacon) and compensation (or observation) wavelengths. We validate this formula by comparing it to the OPD variances obtained from the aforementioned series and direct …

Quantics Tensor Trains: The Study Of A Continuous Lattice Model And Beyond, Aleix Bou Comas Jun 2024

Quantics Tensor Trains: The Study Of A Continuous Lattice Model And Beyond, Aleix Bou Comas

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This four-chapter dissertation studies the efficient discretization of continuous variable functions with tensor train representation. The first chapter describes all the methodology used to discretize functions and store them efficiently. In this section, the algorithm tensor renormalization group is explained for self-containment purposes. The second chapter centers around the XY model. Quantics tensor trains are used to describe the transfer matrix of the model and compute one and two-dimensional quantities. The one dimensional magnitudes are compared to analytical results with an agreement close to machine precision. As for two dimensions, the analytical results cannot be computed. However, the critical temperature …

Positron Emission Tomography In Oncology And Environmental Science, Samantha Delaney Jun 2024

Positron Emission Tomography In Oncology And Environmental Science, Samantha Delaney

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The last half century has played witness to the onset of molecular imaging for the clinical assessment of physiological targets. While several medical imaging modalities allow for the visualization of the functional and anatomical properties of humans and living systems, few offer accurate quantitation and the ability to detect biochemical processes with low-administered drug mass doses. This limits how physicians and scientists may diagnose and treat medical issues, such as cancer, disease, and foreign agents.

A promising alternative to extant invasive procedures and suboptimal imaging modalities to assess the nature of a biological environment is the use of positron emission …

In the present work, novel azo compounds of sulfamidazole were created via the reaction of diazonium salt of sulfamidazole with several aromatic molecules including (resorcinol, 2-nitro phenol, 3-nitro phenol, and 4-nitro phenol)) (Z1–Z4). The new compounds (Z1-Z4) were identified using FTIR, 1HNMR techniques, in addition to melting point measurements. The biological activity of compounds (Z1-Z4) was studied against four kinds of bacteria including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus. The findings showed that all compounds (Z1-Z4) were active against the examined bacteria. Theoretical studies of the antibacterial ability of the prepared compound against DNA gyrase enzyme …

On The Ubiquity, Properties And Evolution Of Small-Scale Magnetic Flux Ropes In The Heliosphere, Hameedullah Farooki May 2024

On The Ubiquity, Properties And Evolution Of Small-Scale Magnetic Flux Ropes In The Heliosphere, Hameedullah Farooki

Dissertations

The solar wind is a plasma constantly blowing out from the Sun with a large-scale magnetic field having significant local complexity at small scales. Small-scale magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs), plasma structures with twisted field lines, are an important element of this complexity. This dissertation contributes several studies that further our understanding of SMFRs. The first study applies machine learning to measurements from Wind labeled by the presence of SMFRs and magnetic clouds (MCs). MCs were distinguished from non-MFRs with an AUC of 94% and SMFRs with an AUC of 89% and had distinctive plasma properties, whereas SMFRs appeared to be …

Computational Microscopy For Biomedical Imaging With Deep Learning Assisted Image Analysis, Yuwei Liu May 2024

Computational Microscopy For Biomedical Imaging With Deep Learning Assisted Image Analysis, Yuwei Liu

Dissertations

Microscopy plays a crucial role across various scientific fields by enabling structural and functional imaging with microscopic resolution. In biomedicine, microscopy contributes to basic research and clinical diagnosis. Conventionally, optical microscopy derives its contrast from the amplitude of the optical wave and provides visualization of the physical structure of the sample qualitatively. To understand the function at the cellular or tissue level, there is a need to characterize the sample quantitatively and explore contrast mechanisms other than light intensity. Image enhancement or reconstruction from microscopic imaging systems is known as computational microscopy, and it involves the application of computational techniques …

Measurement Of Simplified Template Cross Sections Of The Higgs Boson Produced In Association With W Or Z Bosons In The H → B[] Decay Channel In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S =13 Tev, A. Tumasyan May 2024

Measurement Of Simplified Template Cross Sections Of The Higgs Boson Produced In Association With W Or Z Bosons In The H → B[] Decay Channel In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S =13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Kenneth Bloom Publications

Differential cross sections are measured for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with vector bosons (W, Z) and decaying to a pair of b quarks. Measurements are performed within the framework of the simplified template cross sections. The analysis relies on the leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, resulting in final states with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons. The Higgs boson candidates are either reconstructed from pairs of resolved b-tagged jets, or from single large-radius jets containing the particles arising from two b quarks. Proton-proton collision data at √s = …

Combinatorial Studies Of Noble Metal Catalysts For Carbon Utilization, Natalie Leong Page May 2024

Combinatorial Studies Of Noble Metal Catalysts For Carbon Utilization, Natalie Leong Page

Theses and Dissertations

Electrocatalysts demonstrate significant promise for sustainable processes like carbon capture and generating recycled carbon fuels which are needed to achieve net zero carbon emissions. However, the commercialization of these processes is limited by several factors, one of which is the high cost of catalysts. The discovery and development of cheaper alternatives has been difficult due to constraints in experimental methodologies, scalability limitations, and a lack of understanding of reaction mechanisms. Within this dissertation is the development of a novel scanning electrochemical system and its implementation for high-throughput data generation from combinatorially sputtered material libraries. Combinatorial Pd-Au alloys were investigated for …

Dynamic Cbct Imaging Using Prior Model-Free Spatiotemporal Implicit Neural Representation (Pmf-Stinr), Hua-Chieh Shao, Tielige Mengke, Tinsu Pan, You Zhang May 2024

Dynamic Cbct Imaging Using Prior Model-Free Spatiotemporal Implicit Neural Representation (Pmf-Stinr), Hua-Chieh Shao, Tielige Mengke, Tinsu Pan, You Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objective. Dynamic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can capture high-spatial-resolution, time-varying images for motion monitoring, patient setup, and adaptive planning of radiotherapy. However, dynamic CBCT reconstruction is an extremely ill-posed spatiotemporal inverse problem, as each CBCT volume in the dynamic sequence is only captured by one or a few x-ray projections, due to the slow gantry rotation speed and the fast anatomical motion (e.g. breathing).Approach. We developed a machine learning-based technique, prior-model-free spatiotemporal implicit neural representation (PMF-STINR), to reconstruct dynamic CBCTs from sequentially acquired x-ray projections. PMF-STINR employs a joint image reconstruction and registration approach to address the …

Probing Charge Recombination In Organic Solar Cells, Ally C. Hurd, Awwad Alotaibi, Acacia Patterson, Obaid Alqahtani, James Doyle, Brian Akira Collins

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

Printable and flexible organic solar panels are promising sources of inexpensive, large-scale renewable energy, where panels can be manufactured by printing from polymer inks. There are some limitations to these types of solar cells, however. First, toxic halogenated solvents have historically been necessary to dissolve polymers to make the ink. In addition, organic solar cells typically have high rates of recombination, which limits their efficiency. Here, we use a transient photovoltage (TPV) technique to measure charge lifetimes in cells made from two different organic solvents. The first solvent is toxic, halogenated dichlorobenzene (DCB) which is typically used to make organic …

Strain Methods For Changing Local Electric Field Gradient In Bafe2as2, Caleb Williams May 2024

Strain Methods For Changing Local Electric Field Gradient In Bafe2as2, Caleb Williams

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

In this study, we introduce a novel approach aimed at advancing the investigation of local nematicity in BaFe2As2 via dynamically pulsed strain fields. Our research is motivated by the pursuit of a more sensitive alternative to existing static strain methods. Employing nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, we measure the nuclear quadrupolar energy splittings, utilizing them as a sensitive indicator of the electric field gradient (EFG) that couples strongly to the orbital occupations of the 75As p-orbitals. In the new method, we discern an EFG response through changes in the phase acquired by the nuclear magnetization while time-evolving in the strain field, …

Variability Of High-Degree Modes Over Multiple Solar Cycles Using Local Helioseismic Data From Gong, Nicholas Cebula, Sushanta Tripathy, Kiran Jain, John M. Cannon

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

In this investigation we use the local helioseismic technique of ring diagrams to study the power, energy, and damping rates of high degree solar acoustic modes. Our data covers the period from the maximum phase of solar cycle 23 to the ascending phase of cycle 25. The goal is to examine the variations in the mode parameters with solar activity as well as the differences between different cycles. For this, we use different proxies of solar activity. We use 10.7 cm radio flux measurements and a measure of magnetic flux known as magnetic activity index from magnetograms.

Ammonia Emission In The Milky Way Galactic Bar Dust Lanes, Charles G. Burton May 2024

Ammonia Emission In The Milky Way Galactic Bar Dust Lanes, Charles G. Burton

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way is a region of molecular gas within the inner few hundred parsecs of the Galaxy. This inner region of the Milky Way is hotter and more turbulent when compared with the disk of the Milky Way. Gas is thought to be funneled into the CMZ through dense gaseous dust lanes that are associated with the Galactic Bar. I studied two regions of one of these dust lanes using the NH3 inversion transitions of (J,K) = (1,1), (2,2), (3,3), and (4,4). Data has been obtained from the Green Bank Telescope targeting these …

Unbiased Estimation Of Gravitational-Wave Anisotropies From Noisy Data, Nikolaos Kouvatsos, Alexander C. Jenkins, Arianna I. Renzini, Joseph D. Romano, Mairi Sakellariadou

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

One of the most exciting targets of current and future gravitational-wave observations is the angular power spectrum of the astrophysical GW background. This cumulative signal encodes information about the large-scale structure of the Universe, as well as the formation and evolution of compact binaries throughout cosmic time. However, the finite rate of compact binary mergers gives rise to temporal shot noise, which introduces a significant bias in measurements of the angular power spectrum if not explicitly accounted for. Previous work showed that this bias can be removed by cross-correlating GW sky maps constructed from different observing times. However, this …

Optical Transport Of Ultracold Atoms, David Vera May 2024

Optical Transport Of Ultracold Atoms, David Vera

Undergraduate Honors Theses

At temperatures near absolute zero, bosons form a macroscopic quantum state that can be manipulated and imaged in a very controlled and tunable way. To reach these extreme temperatures near absolute zero, advanced methods in cooling, including laser and evaporative cooling, must be used. In addition to these techniques for cooling, atoms must also be held up against the constant pull of gravity, so additional trapping techniques using lasers and magnets are used. In our lab at University of San Diego, we are implementing a tunable lens system (TLS) to optically transfer atoms to a more optically accessible location. A …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

At present, several botanists still rely on the use of manual estimating methods to assess the carbon content in mangrove. However, these methods have been reported to be extremely time-consuming, showing the need to develop a system for prediction. An effective solution lies in the creation of an artificial intelligence application, which can provide rapid and cost-effective results. In constructing this application, careful consideration must be given to the selection of parameters or attributes. Species is an essential parameter for the assessment of carbon content, but its determination has proven to be challenging due to the similarities of mangrove. The …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can facilitate accurate organ delineation and optimal dose distributions in high-dose-rate (HDR) MRI-Assisted Radiosurgery (MARS). Its use for this purpose has been limited by the lack of positive-contrast MRI markers that can clearly delineate the lumen of the HDR applicator and precisely show the path of the HDR source on T1- and T2-weighted MRI sequences. We investigated a novel MRI positive-contrast HDR brachytherapy or interventional radiotherapy line marker, C4:S, consisting of C4 (visible on T1-weighted images) complexed with saline. Longitudinal relaxation time (T1) and transverse relaxation time (T2) for C4:S were measured on a 1.5 T …

Optics Design And Fabrication For A Lung Interferometry-Radiography System, Rachael Lyn Blair May 2024

Optics Design And Fabrication For A Lung Interferometry-Radiography System, Rachael Lyn Blair

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: High prevalence of lung diseases leads to many people worldwide needing spirometry and imaging testing. The typical imaging done uses chest radiography and/or low-dose CT. Lung tissue is difficult to visualize, making them substandard for monitoring lung disease progression. An improvement on these systems is x-ray interferometry which produces additional images that provide better visualization of changes in the lung tissue. The set-up of x-ray interferometry builds upon other imaging systems in that it includes diffraction gratings.

Materials: This thesis focused on implementing the fabrication processes to create diffraction gratings for a lung imager prototype that is currently under …

Decay Spectroscopy Of 134sb Using X-Array And Saturn, Graeme E. Morgan May 2024

Decay Spectroscopy Of 134sb Using X-Array And Saturn, Graeme E. Morgan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ground-state decay of 134Sb is reported by the current evaluated nuclear data to be dominated by a 0-→0+ first-forbidden Gamow-Teller transition to the ground state of 134Te. In 2013, a recoil-ion time-of-flight (RI-TOF) spectroscopy measurement of 134Sb with the Beta-decay Paul Trap (BPT) indicated that the ground-state feeding of 134Te is weaker than reported. Simulation work of 134Sb ground-state decays replicated the RI-TOF results with the addition of a theorised 5-MeV state that was fed with ~17% of the total β-decay strength. To search for higher energy states and transitions that …

Michigan Tech Publications

We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, Xmax, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, S(1000), using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists of fitting the measured two-dimensional (S(1000), Xmax) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models epos-lhc, qgsjet-ii-04, sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted Xmax and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free-fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains …

Avoiding Pitfalls In Molecular Simulation Of Vapor Sorption: Example Of Propane And Isobutane In Metal–Organic Frameworks For Adsorption Cooling Applications, Filip Formalik, Haoyuan Chen, Randall Q. Snurr May 2024

Avoiding Pitfalls In Molecular Simulation Of Vapor Sorption: Example Of Propane And Isobutane In Metal–Organic Frameworks For Adsorption Cooling Applications, Filip Formalik, Haoyuan Chen, Randall Q. Snurr

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

This study introduces recommendations for conducting molecular simulations of vapor adsorption, with an emphasis on enhancing the accuracy, reproducibility, and comparability of results. The first aspect we address is consistency in the implementation of some details of typical molecular models, including tail corrections and cutoff distances, due to their significant influence on generated data. We highlight the importance of explicitly calculating the saturation pressures at relevant temperatures using methods such as Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations and illustrate some pitfalls in extrapolating saturation pressures using this method. For grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, the input fugacity is usually calculated …

Gauge-Invariant Correlators In Quantum Gravity, Kenneth Ratliff May 2024

Gauge-Invariant Correlators In Quantum Gravity, Kenneth Ratliff

Dissertations - ALL

Recent successes in Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations (EDT) motivate the further comparison of lattice observables to predictions of general relativity (GR) treated as an effective quantum theory. A particularly promising observable is the two-point function of the scalar curvature, which can be straightforwardly computed on the lattice and which in principle can also be computed from the Einstein-Hilbert path integral. Any such comparison should be between manifestly gauge-invariant observables, and will require that the GR predictions be analytically continued in a gauge-invariant manner to the Euclidean signature of the lattice. In this thesis I present my work toward this goal, namely: …

Multimode Metamaterial Ring Resonator As An Entangling Bus For Artificial Atoms, Tianna Carroll May 2024

Multimode Metamaterial Ring Resonator As An Entangling Bus For Artificial Atoms, Tianna Carroll

Dissertations - ALL

Circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems with superconducting qubits coupled to linear microwave resonators are a prominent platform for realizing scalable quantum information processors. Combining cQED architectures with multimode resonators leads to a broad set of applications for performing analog quantum simulation, implementing dense quantum memory, and generating multimode entangled states between physically distant qubits. Microwave resonators in cQED are typically formed from distributed transmission lines that exhibit conventional dispersion with harmonic mode spacing; in such systems, usually only a single resonant mode can be strongly coupled to a qubit. Superconducting metamaterial resonators comprised of lumped circuit elements can be designed …

Investigating Holography Using Classical And Quantum Simulations, Goksu Can Toga May 2024

Investigating Holography Using Classical And Quantum Simulations, Goksu Can Toga

Dissertations - ALL

In this thesis, we aim to develop classical and quantum simulations to test holography. Holography can be thought of in its most basic form as a duality that relates a d + 1 dimensional theory to a d dimensional one and the most famous holographic correspondence is the AdS/CFT duality where d + 1 dimensional weakly coupled gravity theory is related to a d dimensional CFT. We start by developing lattice simulations for the N = 4 super Yang-Mills model and explore an improved supersymmetric lattice action showing that it is free of the lattice artifacts that plagued earlier lattice …

Overcoming Controls And Noise Challenges For High Power Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Detectors, Elenna Capote May 2024

Overcoming Controls And Noise Challenges For High Power Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Detectors, Elenna Capote

Dissertations - ALL

In August 2017, the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors made the first coincident detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger, GW170817. This multi-messenger detection, measured with both gravitational wave detectors and electromagnetic telescopes, emphasized the ability of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors to make exciting astrophysical discoveries that revolutionize understanding of the universe. In this new era of gravitational-wave astronomy, high detector sensitivity and reliable operation are required to enable more of these exciting detections. Ground-based gravitational-wave observatories are generally limited in sensitivity at low frequency by technical noise, at mid frequency by coating thermal noise, and at …
