Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurface, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù Jan 2021

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurface, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù

Publications and Research

Fano resonances are conventionally understood as sharp spectral features with selectivity in the momentum-frequency domain, implying that they can be excited only by plane waves with specific frequencies and incident angles. We demonstrate that Fano resonances can be made generally selective in the space-frequency domain. They can be tailored to resonate only when excited by a frequency, polarization, and wavefront of choice. This generalization reveals that Fano systems are characterized by eigenwaves that scatter to their time-reversed image upon reflection. Although in conventional Fano systems this trivially occurs for normally incident plane waves, we show that, in general, the selected …

Calabi-Yau Products: Graded Quivers For General Toric Calabi-Yaus, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan Jan 2021

Calabi-Yau Products: Graded Quivers For General Toric Calabi-Yaus, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan

Publications and Research

The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY (m + 2)-folds is described by m-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY (m + 2)-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D(5 − 2m)-branes for m = 0, . . . , 3 to arbitrary m. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CYm+2 and CYn+2 produces the quiver theory for a related CYm+n+3 …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Single and Multi-photon Laser Induced Fluorescence for Electric Thruster and Fusion Applications

Thomas Edward Steinberger

Laser-based diagnostics are increasingly sought after to investigate a variety of plasmas due to their non-perturbative capabilities. Specifically, laser induced fluorescence (LIF) provides a highly localized and precise spectroscopic technique to measure absolute density, temperature, and bulk flow. In this work, LIF and two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence (TALIF) are used to investigate electric propulsion and fusion-relevant plasmas, respectively. Ion velocity distribution functions (IVDF) of singly ionized atomic iodine (I II) are measured for the first time and lineshape characteristics are presented for the diagnosis …

Experimental Investigations Of Contact Friction And Transport Properties Of Monolayer And Bilayer Graphene, Prakash Gajurel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Results obtained from experimental investigations of contact friction in monolayer and bilayers graphene and the related effects on their transport properties are presented here along with their discussion and interpretation. For this purpose, chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene samples on SiO2/Si were prepared. The samples were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Summaries of the results are given below.

Defects-controlled friction in graphene is of technological importance but the underlying mechanism remains a subject of debate. The new results obtained from the analysis of lateral force microscopy images revealed that the contact …

Evans, Michelle Wurch, Koichi Yamaguchi, Peter A. Dowben, Ludwig Bartels, Talat S. Rahman, Richard G. Blair

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Homogenous single-layer MoS2 films coated with sub-single layer amounts of gold are found to isolate the reaction of methanol with carbon monoxide, the fundamental step toward higher alcohols, from an array of possible surface reactions. Active surfaces were prepared from homogenous single-layer MoS2 films coated with sub-single layer amounts of gold. These gold atoms formed clusters on the MoS2 surface. A gas mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and methanol (CH3OH) was partially converted to acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) under mild process conditions (308 kPa and 393 K). This carbonylation of methanol to a C2 species …

Magnetism In Curved Geometries, Robert Streubel, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Peter Fischer Jan 2021

Magnetism In Curved Geometries, Robert Streubel, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Peter Fischer

Robert Streubel Papers

Curvature impacts physical properties across multiple length scales, ranging from the macroscopic scale, where the shape and size vary drastically with the curvature, to the nanoscale at interfaces and inhomogeneities in materials with structural, chemical, electronic, and magnetic short-range order. In quantum materials, where correlations, entanglement, and topology dominate, the curvature opens the path to novel characteristics and phenomena that have recently emerged and could have a dramatic impact on future fundamental and applied studies of materials. Particularly, magnetic systems hosting non-collinear and topological states and 3D magnetic nanostructures strongly benefit from treating curvature as a new design parameter to …

Interface Engineered Electron And Hole Tunneling, Rui Guo, Lingling Tao, Ming Li, Zhongran Liu, Weinan Lin, Guowei Zhou, Xiaoxin Chen, Liang Liu, Xiaobing Yan, He Tian, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Jingsheng Chen

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Although the phenomenon of tunneling has been known since the advent of quantum mechanics, it continues to enrich our understanding of many fields of science. Commonly, this effect is described in terms of electrons traversing the potential barrier that exceeds their kinetic energy due to the wave nature of electrons. This picture of electron tunneling fails, however, for tunnel junctions, where the Fermi energy lies sufficiently close to the insulator valence band, in which case, hole tunneling dominates. We demonstrate the deterministic control of electron and hole tunneling in interface-engineered Pt/BaTiO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 ferroelectric tunnel …

Nebulizer-Based Systems To Improve Pharmaceutical Aerosol Delivery To The Lungs, Benjamin M. Spence Jan 2021

Nebulizer-Based Systems To Improve Pharmaceutical Aerosol Delivery To The Lungs, Benjamin M. Spence

Theses and Dissertations

Combining vibrating mesh nebulizers with additional new technologies leads to substantial improvements in pharmaceutical aerosol delivery to the lungs across therapeutic administration methods. In this dissertation, streamlined components, aerosol administration synchronization, and/or Excipient Enhanced Growth (EEG) technologies were utilized to develop and test several novel devices and aerosol delivery systems. The first focus of this work was to improve the poor delivery efficiency, e.g., 3.6% of nominal dose (Dugernier et al. 2017), of aerosolized medication administration to adult human subjects concurrent with high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy, a form of continuous-flow non-invasive ventilation (NIV). The developed Low-Volume Mixer-Heater (LVMH) …

Live Cell Biomass Tracking For Basic, Translational, And Clinical Research, Graeme Murray Jan 2021

Live Cell Biomass Tracking For Basic, Translational, And Clinical Research, Graeme Murray

Theses and Dissertations

Single cell mass is tightly regulated throughout generations and the cell cycle, making it an important marker of cell health. Abnormal changes in cell size can be the first indication of dysfunction in response to environmental stimuli such as cytotoxic drugs. Described here is the further development of high-speed live cell interferometry (HSLCI) to concurrently measure the changes in single cell mass of thousands of cells over time. Critically, the high-throughput nature of HSLCI provides realistic pictures of tumor heterogeneity. This throughput enabled HSLCI to correctly predict in vivo carboplatin sensitivity of three triple negative breast cancer patient derived xenografts, …

On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez Jan 2021

On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez

Dissertations and Theses

As large urban centers around the world become more densely populated, the global conversion from natural to man-made land surfaces will only increase. These land-use changes affect the urban surface energy budget which in turn changes the structure of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) above. With current high-performance computing systems, meteorological and built environment information can be better utilized to quantify the anthropogenic effects of these modifications. Although these systems have improved forecasting near-surface weather conditions, a comprehensive approach to represent urban impacts on the PBL is still limited. Improved PBL representation can lead to better weather and climate forecasts, …

Towards Explainable Sentiment Analysis For Written Reviews Via Quantum Tensor Network States, Chanatip Mangkang Jan 2021

Towards Explainable Sentiment Analysis For Written Reviews Via Quantum Tensor Network States, Chanatip Mangkang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have shown an incredible performance in supervised machine learning tasks such as Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, theoretical understanding of RNNs' performances in NLP are still limited due to intrinsically complex non-linear computations of RNNs. This thesis explores a class of RNNs called Recurrent Arithmetic Circuits (RACs), possessing a dual mathematical representation as a Matrix Product State (MPS) widely used in many-body quantum physics. The duality allows us to compute the entanglement entropy of an MPS, which can be used as a proxy for information propagation in the dual neural networks, to phenomenologically explain the RNNs-based …

Stability And Electronic Structure Of Magnesium Hydride And Magnesium Deuteride Under High Pressure, Chayaphon Boonchot Jan 2021

Stability And Electronic Structure Of Magnesium Hydride And Magnesium Deuteride Under High Pressure, Chayaphon Boonchot

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Metal polyhydrides have attracted interest because some of them transform into metals under high pressure, while others initiate a phase transition to become superconductors. It was recently discovered that some superconducting metal polyhydrides have a high critical temperature (Tc ) under pressure. We calculate the structures of MgH2 (FCC), MgH2 (HCP), and MgH3 under pressures ranging from 0-300 GPa in order to determine the formation enthalpy and electronic properties under high pressure. We also replaced the hydrogen atoms with deuterium (D). The convex hulls of MgH2 (FCC), MgH2 (HCP), and MgH3 (FCC) calculated at pressures from 0 to 300 GPa. …

Ab Initio Calculations On Superconducting Metal-Hydride And Perovskites For Energy Applications, Wiwittawin Sukmas

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Superconducting hydrides and photovoltaic perovskites for energy applications are studied by means of the density functional theory-based calculations. First of all, the new decoration of Mg0.5Ca0.5H6 is confirmed thermodynamically stable over the pressures ranging from 200 to 400 GPa. The electronic properties reveal the possibility for this very material of becoming a superconductor under pressures. As a result, by performing electron-phonon coupling (EPC) calculations, Mg0.5Ca0.5H6 is found to superconduct at a maximum critical temperature of 288 K at 200 GPa, which completely exceeds those of its parent compounds, i.e. MgH6 and CaH6. Secondly, the van de Waals (vdW) interaction is …

Drell-Yan Angular Lepton Distributions At Small X From Tmd Factorization, Ian Balitsky Jan 2021

Drell-Yan Angular Lepton Distributions At Small X From Tmd Factorization, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

The Drell-Yan process is studied in the framework of TMD factorization in the Sudakov region s » Q2 » q2⊥ corresponding to recent LHC experiments with Q2 of order of mass of Z-boson and transverse momentum of DY pair ∼ few tens GeV. The DY hadronic tensors are expressed in terms of quark and quark-gluon TMDs with 1Q2 and 1Nc2 accuracy. It is demonstrated that in the leading order in Nc the higher-twist quark-quark-gluon TMDs reduce to leading-twist TMDs due to QCD equation of motion. The resulting hadronic tensors depend on …

Signal-Background Analysis For New Physics At Particle Colliders And The Criteria For Its Discovery, Prudhvi Nikhil Bhattiprolu

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Although the Standard Model (SM) is now complete with the spectacular discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), there are many unsolved puzzles such as the electroweak hierarchy problem, dark matter, neutrino masses, etc., that need to be addressed. Theories proposed to solve these issues often involve new and exotic particles at the TeV scale and beyond. It is therefore of great importance to devise novel strategies to extract new physics signals with small rates lurking in huge backgrounds. My research detailed here is broadly along those lines.

Vectorlike leptons (VLL) are an intriguing possibility for …

Collisional Methods With Applications To Charged Particle Beams, Afnan Al Marzouk Jan 2021

Collisional Methods With Applications To Charged Particle Beams, Afnan Al Marzouk

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Accurate and efficient computational methods are essential to study the dynamics of charged particle beams. Most of the available numerical methods in beam physics are based on the collisionless model which is sufficient for applications that does not depend on Coulomb collisions of the simultaneously interacting particles. However, the development of collisional numerical methods has become greatly important in recent years for applications where collisions play an important role such as the electron cooling of high energy hadron beams. While collisional methods can provide very accurate simulations, their algorithms are very complex, and they face efficiency challenges. In this work, …

Tensor Network Approach For Simulation Of Quantum Many-Body Systems, Danylo Lykov Jan 2021

Tensor Network Approach For Simulation Of Quantum Many-Body Systems, Danylo Lykov

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The simulation of quantum many-body systems and many-body statistical systems presents a challenge for classical computers. Quantum computation, which recently gained significant scientific interest, can provide a potential advantage over classical approaches in this area. While there are multiple methods for the simulation of the physics of many-body quantum systems, most of them scale exponentially with the number of elements. A Tensor Network approach allows to reduce this exponential scaling for some cases and reduces the pre-factor for others. This approach can be used for the simulation of classical statistical physics models, quantum many-body systems, and quantum computers in particular. …

Design And Optimization Of Superconducting Radio-Frequency Electron Sources, Osama Mohsen Jan 2021

Design And Optimization Of Superconducting Radio-Frequency Electron Sources, Osama Mohsen

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

High brightness electron beams are an essential component that drives current and future accelerators and accelerator-based light sources including Free-Electron lasers (FELs), electron cooling experiments, and compact ultrafast electron probe setups (e.g. ultrafast electron diffraction). In FEL, the possible use of a superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) electron gun to support the generation of high-repetition-rate bright-beam can produce copious amounts of radiation over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum which can be used in several scientific experiments while in electron probes, the use of SRF gun can enable the generation of high brightness electron beams at high repetition rates, e.g., necessary …

Spectral Analysis Of Cyclotron Radiation For Electron Beam Diagnostics, Brendan Leung Jan 2021

Spectral Analysis Of Cyclotron Radiation For Electron Beam Diagnostics, Brendan Leung

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The spectral distribution of the cyclotron radiation emitted by non-ultra-relativistic electrons traveling through solenoidal lenses can be used to characterize ensemble-averaged properties of a beam. In this paper we explore the potential use of cyclotron radiation to measure the energy spread and transverse emittance of a beam while remaining unintrusive. We specifically discuss the relation between the spectral properties of cyclotron radiation and the beam statistical properties and perform first principle particle-in-cell simulation to validate our findings.

Clinical Applications And Feasibility Of Proton Ct And Proton Radiography, Christina Marie Sarosiek Jan 2021

Clinical Applications And Feasibility Of Proton Ct And Proton Radiography, Christina Marie Sarosiek

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Proton therapy is a form of radiation treatment for cancer that utilizes the Bragg peak to create conformal high dose regions around the tumor volume. However, the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) and x-ray radiography for treatment planning and pre-treatment quality assurance procedures improves the achievable effectiveness of proton treatment plans (using proton CT) and the pretreatment verification (using proton radiography). Errors in the conversion from x-ray Hounsfield units (HU) to proton relative stopping powers (RSP) leads to errors in the predicted proton range. To account for the errors, 3.5% margins are included in the treatment plan. This means …

Toward In-Situ Nanoscale Imaging And Spectroscopy: Applications In Growth And Catalysis Of Two-Dimensional Materials, Fernand Torres-Davila Jan 2021

Toward In-Situ Nanoscale Imaging And Spectroscopy: Applications In Growth And Catalysis Of Two-Dimensional Materials, Fernand Torres-Davila

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

New challenges arise with advances in our understanding of two dimensional (2D) materials and their functionalities. The reactivity of defects engineered to drive targeted reactions, such as those relevant to sustainability, or to shape the electronic properties of the host material locally for new applications, such as in nanoelectronics or quantum computing, brings about the need to control the environment of the material and the defect. This is particularly important to advance fundamental studies of catalytic processes to mimic the reaction pathways taking place in large scale reactors at various defect sites. With atomic defects, this constitutes an outstanding challenge …

Few Body Effects In The Electron And Positron Impact Ionization Of Atoms, R. I. Campeanu, Colm T. Whelan

Physics Faculty Publications

Triple differential cross sections (TDCS) are presented for the electron and positron impact ionization of inert gas atoms in a range of energy sharing geometries where a number of significant few body effects compete to define the shape of the TDCS. Using both positrons and electrons as projectiles has opened up the possibility of performing complementary studies which could effectively isolate competing interactions that cannot be separately detected in an experiment with a single projectile. Results will be presented in kinematics where the electron impact ionization appears to be well understood and using the same kinematics positron cross sections will …

We report the formation of nanobubbles on graphene with a radius of the order of 1 nm, using ultralow energy implantation of noble gas ions (He, Ne, Ar) into graphene grown on a Pt(111) surface. We show that the universal scaling of the aspect ratio, which has previously been established for larger bubbles, breaks down when the bubble radius approaches 1 nm, resulting in much larger aspect ratios. Moreover, we observe that the bubble stability and aspect ratio depend on the substrate onto which the graphene is grown (bubbles are stable for Pt but not for Cu) and trapped element. …

Predicting Material Properties: Applications Of Multi-Scale Multiphysics Numerical Modeling To Transport Problems In Biochemical Systems And Chemical Process Engineering, Tom Pace Jan 2021

Predicting Material Properties: Applications Of Multi-Scale Multiphysics Numerical Modeling To Transport Problems In Biochemical Systems And Chemical Process Engineering, Tom Pace

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Material properties are used in a wide variety of theoretical models of material behavior. Descriptive properties quantify the nature, structure, or composition of the material. Behavioral properties quantify the response of the material to an imposed condition. The central question of this work concerns the prediction of behavioral properties from previously determined descriptive properties through hierarchical multi-scale, multiphysics models implemented as numerical simulations. Applications covered focus on mass transport models, including sequential enzyme-catalyzed reactions in systems biology, and an industrial chemical process in a common reaction medium.

Analyzing The Effect Of Second-Class Currents On Neutron Beta Decay Observables And The Effect Of Thomas Rotation On The Relativistic Transformations Of Electromagnetic Fields, Lakshya Malhotra Jan 2021

Analyzing The Effect Of Second-Class Currents On Neutron Beta Decay Observables And The Effect Of Thomas Rotation On The Relativistic Transformations Of Electromagnetic Fields, Lakshya Malhotra

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The next generation of neutron beta decay measurements will attempt to analyze various beta decay observables of up to O(10-4) precision. At this level of experimental precision, the effects of second-class currents will contribute theoretical uncertainties to the interpretation of these measurements. Therefore, it is important to investigate the effects of these second-class currents on decay parameters, such as the Fierz interference term b which is linear in beyond standard model couplings. A maximum likelihood statistical framework and Rfit techniques are employed to study these second-class currents effects. Inputs to the Rfit technique are obtained through …

Strongly Correlated Phases In Quantum Hall Systems, Amartya Saha Jan 2021

Strongly Correlated Phases In Quantum Hall Systems, Amartya Saha

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Quantum Hall systems have a one-body energy spectrum consisting of dispersion-less Landau levels. Electron-electron interactions thus dominate in partially filled Landau levels, which exhibit a myriad of strongly correlated phases such as quantum hall ferromagnets and fractional quantum Hall phases. We study two examples of these phenomena.

In the first project, we explore the ground state of a system with an interface between two semi-infinite regions with fillings ν= 4 and ν= 3 respectively. The width of the interface can be controlled by varying the background potential, which provides an additional tuning parameter. For a certain range of …

Effective Field Theory Applications: From Dark Matter To Neutrino Nucleon Scattering, Qing Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Weakly-interacting-massive-particles (WIMPs) are a large class of viable dark matter candidates. We compute cross sections for electroweak-doublet WIMPs scattering on atomic nuclei, at leading and subleading order using heavy WIMP effective field theory. Neutrino-nucleon charged current elastic scattering is an important process in the detectors of long baseline accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments. We compute QED radiative corrections to this process employing soft-collinear effective field theory.

Topics In Quantum Quench And Entanglement, Sinong Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The dissertation includes two parts.

In Part I, we study non-equilibrium phenomena in various models associated with global quantum quench. It is known that local quantities, when subjected to global quantum quench across or approaching critical points, exhibit a variety of universal scaling behaviors at various quench rates. To investigate if similar scaling holds for non-local quantities, we consider the scaling behavior of circuit complexity under quantum quench across the critical massless point in Majorana fermion field theory of the one-dimensional integrable transverse field Ising model and find it obeys such scaling. To investigate if similar scaling holds for non-relativistic …

Optical Metasurfaces, Fatih Balli Jan 2021

Optical Metasurfaces, Fatih Balli

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Traditional optical elements, such as refractive lenses, mirrors, phase plates and polarizers have been used for various purposes such as imaging systems, lithographic printing, astronomical observations and display technology. Despite their long-term achievements, they can be bulky and not suitable for miniaturization. On the other hand, recent nanotechnology advances allowed us to manufacture micro and nanoscale devices with ultra-compact sizes. Metasurfaces, 2D engineered artificial interfaces, have emerged as candidates to replace traditional refractive lenses with ultra-thin miniaturized optical elements. They possess sub-wavelength unit cell structures with a specific geometry and material selection. Each unit cell can uniquely tailor the phase, …

Beam Dynamics Study In A Dual Energy Storage Ring For Ion Beam Cooling*, B. Dhital, Y. S. Derbenev, D. Douglas, A. Hutton, Geoffrey A. Krafft, F. Lin, V. S. Morozov, Y. Zhang

Physics Faculty Publications

A dual energy storage ring designed for beam cooling consists of two closed rings with significantly different energies: the cooling and damping rings. These two rings are connected by an energy recovering superconducting RF structure that provides the necessary energy difference. In our design, the RF acceleration has a main linac and harmonic cavities both running at crest that at first accelerates the beam from low energy E_{L} to high energy E_{H} and then decelerates the beam from E_{H} to E_{L} in the next pass. The purpose of the harmonic cavities is to extend the bunch length in a dual …
