Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
A preliminary rotation‐vibration analysis of the n=0 and n=1 subbands associated with the nν6+ν1−nν6 hydrogen‐bonded vibration in HCN⋅⋅⋅HF has been completed. The following excited staterotational constantsB′ and band origin frequencies ν0 have been determined for the complex. The results are consistent with a rotation‐vibration interaction constant α1=−68.3±1 MHz which correlates with an excited stater(N⋅⋅⋅F) internuclear distance of 2.762 Å, a decrease of 0.034 Å relative to the ground state.Excited state lifetimes associated with assigned transitions are demonstrated to be …

A General Nmr Spectral Density And Its Experimental Verification, A. M. Albano, Peter A. Beckmann, M. E. Carrington, F. A. Fusco, A. E. O'Neill, M. E. Scott
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
The authors develop a new general spectral density for use in interpreting nuclear spin-lattice relaxation measurements in molecular solids where molecular and/or intramolecular reorientation is responsible for the relaxation. They show that the simplest case of the general theory fits both the temperature and Lamor frequency dependence of some very complicated relaxation measurements which could not be previously fitted using several standard spectral densities. The relationship of the spectral density to a distribution of molecular potentials is briefly outlined.

Linear Inversion Method To Obtain Aerosol Size Distributions From Measurements With A Differential Mobility Analyzer, Donald E. Hagen, Darryl J. Alofs
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Use of a Differential Mobility Analyzer to Perform Aerosol Size Spectrum Measurements Requires an Inversion Method to Go from the Measured Sensor Responses to the Desired Size Spectrum Information. Here We Present a Linear Inversion Method that Can Be Run on a Microcomputer or a Small Minicomputer. It Does Not Use Some of the Approximations Made in the Techniques Currently Available and Hence Gives Better Inversion Accuracy. the Method Shows Good Immunity to Both Random and Systematic Experimental Error. It is Applied to Numerous Test Case Aerosols. © 1983 Elsevier Science Publishing Co., Inc.
Homogeneous Nucleation Of Toluene, John L. Schmitt, R. A. Zalabsky, G. W. Adams
Homogeneous Nucleation Of Toluene, John L. Schmitt, R. A. Zalabsky, G. W. Adams
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The authors have used a fast expansion chamber to measure the homogeneous nucleation rate of toluene as a function of temperature and supersaturation. The measured nucleation rate ranges from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 s over a temperature range of 215-267 K. The measurements are compared with the "classical" nucleation theory and with the RKC theory. The inclusion of the RKC replacement factor brings the data into good agreement with theory using physically realistic values of the surface tension and the sticking coefficient. An empirical curve fit to the data is presented as well as a full listing of the thermodynamic …
New Relativistic Paradoxes And Open Questions, Florentin Smarandache
New Relativistic Paradoxes And Open Questions, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Following the Special Theory of Relativity, Florentin Smarandache generalized the Lorentz Contraction Factor to an Oblique-Contraction Factor, which gives the contraction factor of the lengths moving at an oblique angle with respect to the motion direction. He also proved that relativistic moving bodies are distorted, and he computed the Angle-Distortion Equations.
He then showed several paradoxes, inconsistencies, contradictions, and anomalies in the Theory of Relativity.
According to the author, not all physical laws are the same in all inertial reference frames, and he gives several counter-examples. He also supports superluminal speeds, and he considers that the …
Homogeneous Nucleation Of Nonane In Argon Using An Expansion Cloud Chamber, Gregg Wesley Adams
Homogeneous Nucleation Of Nonane In Argon Using An Expansion Cloud Chamber, Gregg Wesley Adams
Doctoral Dissertations
"The homogeneous nucleation rate of nonane has been measured using an expansion cloud chamber. Data were obtained for pre-expansion temperatures of 45°C, 35°C, 25°C, 15°C, 5°C, and -5°C. The measured nucleation rate ranges from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 -sec over a temperature range of 216 K to 270 K. The data set is sufficiently extensive to provide a detailed test for nucleation theories applied to nonane. The measured rates are compared with the "classical" nucleation theory and with a modified classical theory using the replacement factor of Reiss, Katz and Cohen (RKC). It is found that neither …
Application Of The Impact Approximation To Collisional Line Shifts In Na-Rare Gas Systems, Mahdi Azougui
Application Of The Impact Approximation To Collisional Line Shifts In Na-Rare Gas Systems, Mahdi Azougui
Masters Theses
"This dissertation deals, mainly, with the line shifts of the excited atoms of sodium induced by collisions with argon atoms. The general work is based on the study of both, broadenings of the lines and line shifts with a particular emphasis on the latter. A review is given for the case of very large principal quantum numbers N; then the binary collision method is detailed for low transitions (N ≤ 6) where the computed values are in very good agreement with the experimental results obtained by Krebs and Schearer.1 This method breaks down at larger N. Next, a modification …
Molecular Treatment Of Charge Transfer In Li+ +Ca Collisions, M. Kimura, H. Sato, Ronald E. Olson
Molecular Treatment Of Charge Transfer In Li+ +Ca Collisions, M. Kimura, H. Sato, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The perturbed-stationary-state method, appended with electron translation factors, has been applied to charge transfer in Li+ +Ca collisions for energies from 0.1 to 20 keV/amu. The Born-Oppenheimer wave functions and eigenvalues were generated using the pseudopotential technique, which reduced the many-electron system to a simpler two-electron problem. The molecular ground-state X +1 is calculated to be bound and has the potential-well parameters Re=6.20a0, De=1.11 eV, e=235 cm-1, and Be=0.263 cm-1. From the scattering computations, a representative value for the charge-transfer cross section is 4x10-15 cm2 at 5 keV/amu. The cross section decreases rapidly as the energy is reduced below 1 …
Stopping Power Of K Electrons At Extreme Relativistic Energies, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi
Stopping Power Of K Electrons At Extreme Relativistic Energies, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The recent work of Anholt (1979) on K-vacancy production by relativistic projectiles has been applied to calculate the stopping power of the K electrons. The results show that for protons of energy ~10³ GeV and heavy target elements, the relativistic contributions to the stopping power amount to several times the results due to the longitudinal terms obtained from Walske's (1956) work.

Temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements on two Cr-doped GaAs samples
show a dominant center at E1 =0.324—1.4 x 10-4T eV, with respect to the valence-band edge. By comparison with secondary-ion mass spectroscopy measurements of the Cr concentration, and recent EPR measurements of the Cr2+, Cr3+, and Cr4+ concentration in several samples, it is shown unambiguously that this energy describes the Cr4+→Cr3+ transition. This is the first conclusive evidence for a charge-state transition involving Cr4+ in GaAs.

Using a Fano-effect polarized electron source and a state-selected thermally dissociated hydrogen beam, we measured the interference between the direct and exchange scattering amplitudes for electron-impact ionization of atomic hydrogen between 14.1 and 30.3 eV. We report the data from these measurements and the results of corrections applied to previously published data.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The first measurements of elastic differential cross sections have been carried out for 25-, 50-, and 100-keV protons scattered through very small angles by helium atoms. The University of Missouri Rolla energy-loss spectrometer provided the required high angular resolution and also separated the elastically scattered ions from the inelastically scattered ions. The data are compared to our Born, Glauber, and classical calculations as well as a four-state calculation. All of the measured elastic differential cross sections are more sharply peaked than theory for the smallest scattering angles. At the larger scattering angles all of the measured elastic differential cross sections …

Skyrme has shown that the SU ⊗ SU(2) chiral model has nontrivial topological sectors with static solutions for suitable Lagrangians. The baryon number B and strangeness of these sectors have been studied, and the existence of bound states of the nucleon field to the lightest solitons is shown. It is found that there must be long-lived levels with |B|≳6 and |s|≳6 and 1.8 GeV≲m≲5.6 GeV, some having half-integral charge and exotic relation between B and s, that can be pair produced in, say, e+e− collisions.

Theoretical Study Of The Long-Wavelength Optical Properties Of Nacl, Kcl, Kbr, And Ki, John R. Hardy, A. M. Karo
John R. Hardy Papers
We have made a detailed theoretical study of the long-wavelength absorption of NaCl, KCl, KBr, and KI, associated with two-phonon difference processes caused by third-order anharmonic terms in the lattice potential energy. It was found that a simple nearest neighbor approximation to the anharmonicity, combined with lattice-dynamical eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors generated with the use of a deformation dipole model, can generally account for most of the observed absorption. This agreement was obtained without the use of any disposable parameters, as the form of the first-neighbor potential was predetermined. It was also found that discrepancies between theory and experiment can generally …

Polarization-Preserving Single-Layer-Coated Beam Displacers And Axicons, R. M.A. Azzam, M. Emdadur Rahman Khan
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
A design procedure is described to determine the thicknesses of single-layer coatings of a given dielectric on a given metallic substrate so that any input polarization of light is preserved after two reflections at the same angle of incidence from a parallel-mirror beam displacer or an axicon. This is achieved by equalizing the net complex p and s reflection coefficients (also called the radial and azimuthal eigenvalues of an axicon) after two reflections. The net polarization-independent reflectance (insertion loss) of the device is computed and found to exceed the net minimum parallel reflectance of the uncoated device for incidence above …

Intermediate-Band Photometry In The Open Cluster Ngc 6664, Edward G. Schmidt
Edward Schmidt Publications
Four-color and Hβ photometry is given for early-type stars in the open cluster NGC 6664. From these data the true distance modulus is found to be 10.7 and the reddening is found to range from E (b – y) = 0.48 to 0.63 across the cluster. The distance modulus agrees well with some values from the literature, but the present color excesses are about 0.1 mag larger than published values. There are two or perhaps three blue stragglers in the cluster and its age is estimated to be 46 × 106 yr.
Biological Effects Of Low Doses Of Ionizing Radiations: Particle Tracks In Radiobiology, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Biological Effects Of Low Doses Of Ionizing Radiations: Particle Tracks In Radiobiology, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Robert Katz Publications
A radiation field is made up of a tangle of particle tracks, from the primary particle and secondary and higher generation electron interactions, well isolated at low doses and with multiple intersections in cell nuclei at high doses. Low dose effects in multicellular systems are therefore the sum of individual track structures. Until we can state with confidence the structure of a particle track in biological matter for all end-points of interest, at least as well as we can for nuclear emulsions, our knowledge of low dose effects should be regarded as uncertain and inadequate. In this context “track structure” …

Absorption Coefficients Of Ozone At Low Temperature In The Visible Region, Hessameddin Ghiassi
Absorption Coefficients Of Ozone At Low Temperature In The Visible Region, Hessameddin Ghiassi
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The temperature dependence of absorption coefficients of ozone was studied between 7567 Å and 4630 Å . When the gas was cooled from room temperature to -108° C, an overall increase in the absorption coefficients was noticed. The maximum increase of 5% occurred at λ = 6020 Å. In general, the absorption is linearly dependent on temperature.

Theoretical And Experimental Optical Holography, Warren A. Krueger
Senior Scholar Papers
The intent of this paper is to present an analysis of optical holography. Both the physical theory behind holography and the experimental techniques used in making holograms will be presented. To accomplish this goal, the paper is divided into two independent sections: the theoretical section followed by the experimental section. Each section is intended to be a complete unit. The Theoretical Section is an exposure to the theory behind holography. This consists of a review of the concepts of interference and diffraction. followed by a brief review of partial coherence. The remaining part of the Theoretical Section is devoted to …
On The Transport Equations For Anisotropic Plasmas, Abdallah R. Barakat
On The Transport Equations For Anisotropic Plasmas, Abdallah R. Barakat
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
First, I attempt to present a unified approach to the study of transport phenomena in multicoponent anisotropic space plasmas. In the limit of small temperature anisotropies this system of generalized transport equations reduces to Grad's 13-moment system of transport equations. In the collisionless limit, the generalized transport equations account for collisionless heat flow, collisionless viscosity, and large temperature anisotropies. Also, I show that with the appropriate assumptions, the system of generalized transport equations reduces to all of the other major systems of transport equations for anisotropic plasmas that have been derived to date.
Next, for application to aeronomy and space …

Massless Neutrinos And The Stellar Stopping Power Via The V-A And Weinberg Interactions, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
A formula for the stopping power of matter for neutrinos and antineutrinos, interacting with electrons via the weak interaction in the context of both the V-A theory and the Weinberg theory is derived in the high-Q approximation and applied to study the solar-neutrino anomaly. The result shows that neutrinos extending in energy from 1 to 10 MeV produced inside the Sun escape it essentially without any loss of energy. In agreement with previous investigators, Rustgi, Leung, Turner, and Brandt (1981). It is found that the neutrinos should retain the energy given them at their creation essentially forever and permeate the …

Four-color and Hβ photometry has been obtained of 33 stars in the southern galactic cluster NGC 3114. This cluster contains many interesting stars including blue stragglers, red giants, and stars with spectral peculiarities. The distance modulus was found to be V0 – Mv = 10.26 which corresponds to 1130 pc. The color excess is E(b – y) = 0m.060. The cluster appears to be slightly older than the Pleiades. There are two extreme blue stragglers and six additional stars which might be considered milder cases of the same phenomenon. The distance moduli of …

Fe Hyperfine Fields In Fe3-XVXSi Alloys, T. J. Burch, C. A. Weiler, K. Raj, J. I. Budnick, V. Niculescu, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
The Mössbauer spectra of Fe in Fe3-xVxSi alloys for 0≤x≤1 shows that V occupies almost exclusively one of two Fe sites (the B site). As x increases the spectra of Fe on the other site (the A, C site) becomes increasingly complex as the number of their V 1st neighbors increases. Simulated Mössbauer spectra were calculated using moments obtained by a simple model from bulk magnetization and V NMR data. This model assumes a decrease in Fe(A, C) moments as the number of their Fe 1st neighbors decreases. Comparison of the Fe(B) field of the alloy …
