Scaling In One-Dimensional Localized Absorbing Systems, Lev I. Deych, Alexey Yamilov, Alexander A. Lisyansky
Scaling In One-Dimensional Localized Absorbing Systems, Lev I. Deych, Alexey Yamilov, Alexander A. Lisyansky
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Numerical study of the scaling of transmission fluctuations in the one-dimensional localization problem in the presence of absorption is carried out. Violations of single-parameter scaling for lossy systems are found and explained on the basis of a new criterion for different types of scaling behavior derived by Deych et al.
Broadband Whole Package Fdtd Simulation, Shenjun Li
Broadband Whole Package Fdtd Simulation, Shenjun Li
Dissertations
Whole package analysis is becoming more and more important with the rapid expansion of high frequency electronics. The motivation of this thesis is to find and implement a new method for broadband whole package simulation. 3-dimension (3-D) whole package Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation result was first reported in detail in this thesis.
The FDTD method is a widely used full-wave time-domain simulation method used in the design and analysis for electromagnetic (EM) systems, such as antennas, wave propagating, and microwave circuits. Absorbing boundary condition (ABC), such as the perfect matched layer (PML) method, makes it possible to accurately …
Near-Field Imaging With Terahertz Pulses, Oleg Mitrofanov
Near-Field Imaging With Terahertz Pulses, Oleg Mitrofanov
Dissertations
High spatial resolution imaging is implemented with a novel collection mode near-field terahertz (THz) probe. Exceptional sensitivity of the probe allows imaging with spatial resolution of few microns using THz pulses with spectral content of 120 to 1500 microns. In the present study, the principle of the probe operation as well as the probe design and characteristics are described.
The probe performance is related to effective detection of radiation coupled into the probe aperture. Propagation of short single-cycle electromagnetic pulses through apertures as small as 1/300 of the wavelength is experimentally and numerically studied. Finite-difference time-domain method is used to …
Gated Multi-Cycle Integration (Gmci) For Focal Plane Array (Fpa) Applications, Haijiang Ou
Gated Multi-Cycle Integration (Gmci) For Focal Plane Array (Fpa) Applications, Haijiang Ou
Dissertations
In this thesis, the model and the theory of gated multi-cycle integration (GMCI) were first developed specifically for focal plane array dealing with repetitive or modulated image. The operational modes of GMCI include gated integration (GI), phase sensitive integration (PSI), multi-point summation, multi-point subtraction, multi-sample averaging and some of their combinations. Thus, the analytic theory of GMCI somehow unifies the theories of gated integration, phase sensitive detection, multiple summation and average. PSI works with background and/or dark current subtraction. As a result, the storage well of a pixel is mainly used for signal integration even if there exists a strong …
A Near-Infrared Filter System And Study Of Solar Umbral Dots At 1.6 Μm, Jingshan Wang
A Near-Infrared Filter System And Study Of Solar Umbral Dots At 1.6 Μm, Jingshan Wang
Dissertations
The observations of solar magnetic fields are very important because they influence events on the sun. Almost all of magnetographs in the world work in the visible wavelength and they are powerful instruments for measuring strong magnetic fields (above 1000 Gauss) on the sun. To measure the weak solar magnetic fields (below 1000 Gauss), a new filter system (magnetograph) working in near-IR wavelength has been developed in this work. This system includes an interference prefilter (FWHM - 40Å), a liquid crystal magnetic analyzer, a near-IR bireffingent filter (FWHM - 2.5Å), a near-IR Fabry-Perot filter (FWHM - 0.12Å), a near-IR InGaAs …
Software And Hardware Improvements For Digital Solar Magnetograph System, Shu Yang
Software And Hardware Improvements For Digital Solar Magnetograph System, Shu Yang
Dissertations
Digital solar imaging systems have been widely used in solar observations. Their high resolution, high rate of image acquisition and convenience for off-line image processing have provided significant improvements to solar physics research. In this project, two digital magnetograph systems established at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) have been described. One is used to provide a high frame rate magnetogram system, and the other provides a real-time image alignment, i.e., a correlation tracker system.
The developed correlation tracker system consists of a high-speed 64x64 CCD camera, an EDT image grabbing board, an agile mirror, a D/A board and a Sun …

Quasi-Model-Independent Search For New Physics At Large Transverse Momentum, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy (“SLEUTH”) to search for new high pT physics in ≈ 100 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV collected by the DØ experiment during 1992–1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. Over 32 eμX, W+jets-like, Z1jets-like, and (l/γ)(l/γ)(l/γ)X exclusive final states are systematically analyzed for hints of physics beyond the standard model. Simultaneous sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale is demonstrated by testing the method on a particular signature in each set of final states. No evidence of new high pT …

We measured the supernumerary spacing parameter of the first- and second-order rainbows of two glass rods, each having an approximately elliptical cross section, as a function of the rod's rotation angle. We attribute large fluctuations in the supernumerary spacing parameter to small local inhomogeneities in the rod's refractive index. The low-pass filtered first-order rainbow experimental data agree with the prediction of ray-tracing-wave-front modeling to within a few percent, and the second-order rainbow data exhibit additional effects that are due to rod nonellipticity. Dijet production has been studied in neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering for 470 < Q2 < 20000 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.4 pb-1. Dijet differential cross sections are presented in a kinematic region where both theoretical and experimental uncertainties are small. Next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations describe the measured differential cross sections well. A QCD analysis of the measured dijet fraction as a function of Q2 allows both a precise determination of αs(Mz) and a test of the energy-scale dependence of the strong coupling constant. A detailed analysis provides an improved estimate of the uncertainties of the NLO QCD cross sections arising from the paxton distribution functions of the proton. The value of αs(Mz), as determined from the QCD fit, is αs (MZ) = 0.1166 ± 0.0019(stat.)+0.0024-0.0044 (exp.) +0.00570.0044(th.). © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
Phonon Modes In Inas Quantum Dots, Shang-Fen Ren, G Qin, Deyu Lu
Phonon Modes In Inas Quantum Dots, Shang-Fen Ren, G Qin, Deyu Lu
Faculty publications – Physics
Phonon modes in spherical InAs quantum dots (QDs) with up to 11 855 atoms (about 8.5 nm in diameter) are calculated by using a valence force field model, and all the vibration frequencies and vibration amplitudes of the QDs are calculated directly from the lattice-dynamic matrix. The projection operators of the irreducible representations of the group theory are employed to reduce the computational intensity, which further allows us to investigate the quantum confinement effect of phonon modes with different symmetries. It is found that the size effects of phonon modes depend on the symmetry of the modes. For zinc-blende structure, …

Search For Neutral Supersymmetric Higgs Bosons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks in pp̅→ bb̅bb̅ final states with 91 ± 7 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no evidence of such a signal and the data are interpreted in the context of the neutral Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. With basic parameter choices for the supersymmetric scale and the stop-quark mixing, we derive 95% C.L. lower mass limits for neutral Higgs bosons for tanb values …

The Ising Model On A Dynamically Triangulated Disk With A Boundary Magnetic Field, Simon Catterall, Scott V. Mcguire, Mark Bowick, Simeon Warner
Physics - All Scholarship
We use Monte Carlo simulations to study a dynamically triangulated disk with Ising spins on the vertices and a boundary magnetic field. For the case of zero magnetic field we show that the model possesses three phases. For one of these the boundary length grows linearly with disk area, while the other two phases are characterized by a boundary whose size is on the order of the cut-off. A line of continuous magnetic transitions separates the two small boundary phases. We determine the critical exponents of the continuous magnetic phase transition and relate them to predictions from continuum 2-d quantum …

Numerical Modeling Of Magnetohydrodynamic Activity In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Vyacheslav S. Lukin , '00, G. Qin, W. H. Matthaeus, Michael R. Brown
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Results from a three-dimensional axisymmetric resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation are compared to experimental data from the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) [M. R. Brown, Phys. Plasmas 6, 1717 (1999)]. The MHD simulation is run under conditions and with dimensionless parameters similar to the experiment (Lundquist number S=1000, plasma beta beta =0.1). The simulation is shown to reproduce global equilibrium magnetic field profiles of the spheromaks as well as much of the detailed reconnection dynamics measured when two spheromaks are merged. It is concluded that SSX merger dynamics may be characterized as MHD reconnection, with the likelihood that extensions are needed to …

Search For The Supersymmetric Partner Of The Top Quark In Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (top squark) produced in tt̅ events using 110 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In the case of a light top squark, the decay of the top quark into a top squark plus the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) could have a significant branching ratio. The observed events are consistent with standard model tt̅ production and decay. Hence, we set limits on the branching ratio of the top quark decaying into a top squark plus LSP, excluding branching …

We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states χ c1 and χ c2 in 110 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV. The photon from their decay into J/ψγ is reconstructed through conversion into e+e- pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections (σ χ c2/ σ χ c1=0.96 ± 0.27(stat) ± 0.11(syst) for events with pT(J/ψ)> 4.0 GeV/c, |η(J/ψ)|, 0.6, and pT …
Velocity Field Distributions Due To Ideal Line Vortices, Thomas D. Levi, David C. Montgomery
Velocity Field Distributions Due To Ideal Line Vortices, Thomas D. Levi, David C. Montgomery
Dartmouth Scholarship
We evaluate numerically the velocity field distributions produced by a bounded, two-dimensional fluid model consisting of a collection of parallel ideal line vortices. We sample at many spatial points inside a rigid circular boundary. We focus on “nearest-neighbor” contributions that result from vortices that fall (randomly) very close to the spatial points where the velocity is being sampled. We confirm that these events lead to a non-Gaussian high-velocity “tail” on an otherwise Gaussian distribution function for the Eulerian velocity field. We also investigate the behavior of distributions that do not have equilibrium mean-field probability distributions that are uniform inside the …

Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos
Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos
Dartmouth Scholarship
The zero-temperature effective equation of motion is derived for a scalar field interacting with other fields. For a broad range of cases, involving interaction with as few as one or two fields, dissipative regimes are found for the scalar field system. The zero-temperature limit constitutes a baseline effect that will be prevalent in any general statistical state. Thus, the results found here provide strong evidence that dissipation is the norm not the exception for an interacting scalar field system. For application to inflationary cosmology, this provides convincing evidence that warm inflation could be a natural dynamics once proper treatment of …

First Measurement Of The Ratio B (T →Wb)/ B (T → Wq) And Associated Limit On The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Element |VTb|, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R≡ B(t→ Wb)/B(t →Wq) from pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb-1 of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992–95 Tevatron run. We measure R=-0.24+0.31(stat + syst) or R >0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element |Vtb| under the assumption of three generations …

Photoionization cross sections and asymmetry (β) parameters for Kr 3s, 3p, and 3d subshells have been measured and calculated in the 300–1300-eV photon energy range. Good agreement between experiment and theory is found for both cross-section branching ratios and β parameters. Interchannel coupling among the channels arising from 3s, 3p, and 3d subshells is found to be necessary for quantitative accuracy of the theory. This shows that the interchannel coupling phenomenology far above threshold, found previously for outer shells of Ne and Ar, is also operative for inner atomic shells.

Electron Self-Energy For The K And L Shells At Low Nuclear Charge, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr, Gerhard Soff
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A nonperturbative numerical evaluation of the one-photon electron self-energy for the K- and L-shell states of hydrogenlike ions with nuclear charge numbers Z =1 to 5 is described. Our calculation for the 1S1/2 state has a numerical uncertainty of 0.8 Hz in atomic hydrogen, and for the L-shell states (2S1/2 , 2P1/2 , and 2P3/2) the numerical uncertainty is 1.0 Hz. The method of evaluation for the ground state and for the excited states is described in detail. The numerical results are compared to results based on known terms in the expansion of the self-energy …

Tests Of Enhanced Leading Order Qcd In W Boson Plus Jets Events From 1.8 Tev P̅P Collisions, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in p̅p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51400 W→eν decay candidates from 108 pb-1 of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W+≥1 to ≥4 jet events. The data compare well to predictions of leading-order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.
Mitigation Of Water Vapor Interference For Infrared Polarization-Modulated Gas Filter Correlation Radiometry, David K. Lockwood
Mitigation Of Water Vapor Interference For Infrared Polarization-Modulated Gas Filter Correlation Radiometry, David K. Lockwood
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Gas filter correlation radiometry (GFCR) is a high-resolution, high-specificity technique for sensing gaseous species. A variation of absorption spectroscopy, GFCR has a long-proven record on orbital platforms for quantitative measurements of atmospheric constituents, as well as common usage in ground-based sensing applications. PMGFCR (Polarization-modulated GFCR) is a recent refinement of the technique with several advantages over the traditional method, including reducing the number of photodetectors required, increased sensitivity, and elimination of moving parts.
To date, no infrared remote sensors have successfully measured nitric oxide (NO) in vehicle exhaust due to spectral overlap by strong water vapor (H2Ov …

Experimental Observation Of Rainbow Scattering By A Coated Cylinder: Twin Primary Rainbows And Thin-Film Interference, Charles L. Adler, James A. Lock, Justin K. Nash, Kirk W. Saunders
Physics Faculty Publications
We experimentally examine the primary rainbow created by the illumination of a coated cylinder. We present a simple technique for varying the coating thickness over a wide range of values, and we see evidence for two different scattering regimes. In one, where the coating thickness is large, twin rainbows are produced. In the second, where the coating is thin enough to act as a thin film, a single rainbow is produced whose intensity varies periodically as the coating thickness varies. We find good agreement with previous theoretical predictions. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America.

Ratio Of Jet Cross Sections At √S = 630 Gev And 1800 Gev, B. Abbott, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
The D0 Collaboration has measured the inclusive jet cross section in p̅p collisions at √s = 630 GeV. The results for pseudorapidities ∣η∣ < 0.5 are combined with our previous results at √s =1800 GeV to form a ratio of cross sections with smaller uncertainties than either individual measurement. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions show excellent agreement with the measurement at 630 GeV; agreement is also satisfactory for the ratio. Specifically, despite a 10% to 15% difference in the absolute magnitude, the dependence of the ratio on jet transverse momentum is very similar for data and theory.

We have carried out a first-principles study of the elastic properties and electronic structure for two room-temperature stable Pt silicide phases, tetragonal α-Pt2Si, and orthorhomic PtSi. We have calculated all of the equilibrium structural parameters for both phases; the a and c lattice constants for α-Pt2Si and the a, b, and c lattice constants and four internal structural parameters for PtSi. These results agree closely with experimental data. We have also calculated the zero-pressure elastic constants, confirming prior results for pure Pt and Si and predicting values for the six (nine) independent, nonzero elastic constants of α-Pt2Si (PtSi). These calculations …

Universality Classes Of Self-Avoiding Fixed-Connectivity Membranes, Mark Bowick, Angelo Cacciuto, Gudmar Thorleifsson, Alex Travesset
Physics - All Scholarship
We present an analysis of extensive large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of self-avoiding fixed-connectivity membranes for sizes (number of faces) ranging from 512 to 17672 (triangular) plaquettes. Self-avoidance is implemented via impenetrable plaquettes. We simulate the impenetrable plaquette model in both three and four bulk dimensions. In both cases we find the membrane to be flat for all temperatures: the size exponent in three dimensions is nu=0.95(5) (Hausdorff dimension d_H=2.1(1)). The single flat phase appears, furthermore, to be equivalent to the large bending rigidity phase of non-self-avoiding fixed-connectivity membranes - the roughness exponent in three dimensions is xi=0.63(4). This suggests that …

We report on a study of the ratio of inclusive three-jet to inclusive two-jet production cross sections as a function of total transverse energy in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy√s = 1.8 TeV, using data collected with the D0 detector during the 1992–1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider.
