Vortex-Defect Interactions In High-Temperature Superconductors, Valentina Tobos
Vortex-Defect Interactions In High-Temperature Superconductors, Valentina Tobos
Dissertations
The topics covered in this thesis are related to two objectives: one refers to the search for methods of improving die critical current density of high-temperature superconductors, a subject which remains of continuing interest for its importance in technological applications. The other direction is aimed at clarifying the phase diagram of high-Tc materials.
The interaction between the structural defects and the vortex system plays a significant role in the capability of these materials to carry large electrical transport currents. Through proton irradiation induced defects we follow the evolution of the critical current density, and its enhancement with increasing point-like defects …

Our recent analysis [J. Phys. B 33, R141 (2000)] of the problem of H- in both laser and strong static electric fields, which treated effects that are linear in the laser intensity l (e.g., the dynamic polarizability and the single-photon detachment cross section), is extended here to treat effects of higher order (∼l2) in the laser intensity (e.g., the dynamic hyperpolarizability, the two-photon detachment cross section, the linear in l corrections to the single-photon detachment rate, etc). We introduce the concept of the dynamic hyperpolarizability of an atom in the presence of a strong electric field …

Measurement Of The Tt̅ Production Cross Section In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

We update the measurement of the tt̅ production cross section using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This measurement uses tt̅ decays to the final states e+ν+jets and μ+ν+jets. We search for b quarks from t decays via secondary-vertex identification or the identification of semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. The background to the tt̅ production is determined primarily through a Monte Carlo simulation. However, we calibrate the simulation and evaluate its uncertainty using several independent data samples. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c2, we measure σ t t¯ …

The Three-Dimensional Random Field Ising Magnet: Interfaces, Scaling, And The Nature Of States, Alan Middleton, Daniel S. Fisher
The Three-Dimensional Random Field Ising Magnet: Interfaces, Scaling, And The Nature Of States, Alan Middleton, Daniel S. Fisher
Physics - All Scholarship
The nature of the zero temperature ordering transition in the 3D Gaussian random field Ising magnet is studied numerically, aided by scaling analyses. In the ferromagnetic phase the scaling of the roughness of the domain walls, $w\sim L^\zeta$, is consistent with the theoretical prediction $\zeta = 2/3$. As the randomness is increased through the transition, the probability distribution of the interfacial tension of domain walls scales as for a single second order transition. At the critical point, the fractal dimensions of domain walls and the fractal dimension of the outer surface of spin clusters are investigated: there are at least …

Measurement And Interpretation Of Deuterium-Line Emission In The Orion Nebula, C. R. O'Dell, Gary J. Ferland, W. J. Henney
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present new observations of the deuterium and hydrogen Balmer lines in the Orion Nebula. There is a real variation in the deuterium-to-hydrogen line ratios across the nebula, being greatest in the emission from the largest proplyd (Orion 244-440). We also present the results of a detailed model for the emission of these lines, the hydrogen lines being the result of photoionization and recombination while the deuterium lines are produced by fluorescent excitation of the upper energy states by the far-UV radiation from θ1 Ori C. Comparison of the observations and predictions of the line intensities shows good agreement, …

Results are presented from analyses of jet data produced in pp̅ collisions at √s =630 and 1800 GeV collected with the DØ detector during the 1994–1995 Fermilab Tevatron Collider run. We discuss the details of detector calibration, and jet selection criteria in measurements of various jet production cross sections at √s = 630 and 1800 GeV. The inclusive jet cross sections, the dijet mass spectrum, the dijet angular distributions, and the ratio of inclusive jet cross sections at√s =630 and 1800 GeV are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions. The order αs3 calculations are in …

Dynamics Of Symmetry Breaking And Tachyonic Preheating, Gary Felder, Juan García-Bellido, Patrick B. Greene, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde, Igor Tkachev
Physics: Faculty Publications
We reconsider the old problem of the dynamics of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) using 3D lattice simulations. We develop a theory of tachyonic preheating, which occurs due to the spinodal instability of the scalar field. Tachyonic preheating is so efficient that SSB typically completes within a single oscillation as the field rolls towards the minimum of its effective potential. We show that, contrary to previous expectations, preheating in hybrid inflation is typically tachyonic. Our results may also be relevant for the theory of the formation of topological defects and of disoriented chiral condensates in heavy ion collisions.

High-Temperature Magnetic Properties Of Mechanically Alloyed Smco 5 And Yco5 Magnets, I.A. Al-Omari, Ralph Skomski, R.A. Thomas, D. Leslie-Pelecky, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
The high-temperature coercivity of mechanically alloyed and subsequently annealed RCo5 (R=Sm and Y) is studied. The annealed materials have the hexagonal CaCu5 structure with 2 : 17 (or 1 : 7) regions as a minor phase. High-temperature magnetic measurements showthat the coercivities of materials decrease with increasing temperature fromroom-temperature to 873 K, but that the temperature coefficient of the coercivity of YCo5 is much smaller than that of SmCo5. This behavior is explained in terms of the intrinsic temperature variation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Coercivity Of Titanium-Substituted High-Temperature Permanent Magnets, Jian Zhou, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
The temperature dependence of the coercivity of Sm–Co based magnets is investigated by magnetization measurements and model calculations. The Zr-free titanium-substituted Sm–Co material exhibits a positive temperature coefficient dHc/dT of the coercivity (TCC) above room temperature, a reasonable hysteresis-loop shape, and an appreciable coercivity of 12.3 kOe at 500 C for the nominal composition Sm(Co6.2Cu0.8Ti0.3). The samples were produced by heat-treating the disordered 1 : 5 alloy commonly referred to as the TbCu7 (or 1 : 7) phase. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that, upon annealing at 1165 C, …

Feedback Correction Of Angular Error In Grating Readout, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sundaram Ramachandran
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Angular and wavelength READ beam errors in holographic interconnection systems are often a recurrent problem. Several strategies have been proposed to minimize or eliminate such READOUT misalignments.
Some years ago, Chatterjee and co-workers proposed a method involving READ beam wavelength tuning to correct output angular errors. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using an acousto-optic (A-O) Bragg cell with optoelectronic feedback to dynamically correct the scattered beam for deviations in the incidence direction of the READ beam of a hologram. The concept here is based on an acoustic frequency feedback strategy used recently by Balakshy and Kazaryan for …

Measurement Of The Gπnn(T) Form Factor, Kelly Gene Vansyoc
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Cross sections were measured for the reaction 1H(e, e′π+) n at the energy W = 1.95 GeV and momentum transfer Q2 = 0.6 (GeV/c)2. At this W and Q2, the longitudinal cross section is dominated by t-channel production, giving a unique opportunity to examine the strong coupling form factor gπNN(t). The measured cross sections were separated using a method similar to a Rosenbluth separation. For the extraction of gπNN(t), the Actor and Körner model [42] and a parameterization of the MAID2000 …

We have obtained 615 new V and R observations of the RR Lyrae star FM Per. A period search identified a primary period of 0.489256 days; however, the light curve of FM Per cannot be well described by a single period. We conclude that FM Per demonstrates the Blazhko effect with a Blazhko period of approximately 122 days.
Resummation Of The Divergent Perturbation Series For A Hydrogen Atom In An Electric Field, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Resummation Of The Divergent Perturbation Series For A Hydrogen Atom In An Electric Field, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider the resummation of the perturbation series describing the energy displacement of a hydrogenic bound state in an electric field (known as the Stark effect or the LoSurdo-Stark effect), which constitutes a divergent formal power series in the electric-field strength. The perturbation series exhibits a rich singularity structure in the Borel plane. Resummation methods are presented that appear to lead to consistent results even in problematic cases where isolated singularities or branch cuts are present on the positive and negative real axis in the Borel plane. Two resummation prescriptions are compared: (i) a variant of the Borel-Pad'e resummation method, …

Measurement Of The Two-Jet Differential Cross Section In Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1800 Gev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
A measurement is presented of the two-jet differential cross section d3σ/dETd η1d η2 at center of mass energy √s =1800 GeV in pp̅ collisions. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 86 pb-1 collected during 1994 to 1995 by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The differential cross section is measured as a function of the transverse energy ET of a jet in the pseudorapidity region 0.1 < | η1| < 0.7 for four different pseudorapidity bins of a second jet restricted to 0.1 < |η2| < 3.0. The results are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations determined using the CTEQ4 and MRST sets of parton distribution functions. None of the sets examined in this analysis provides a good description of the data.

The photoproduction of prompt photons, together with an accompanying jet, has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. A study of the effective transverse momentum, (kT), of partons in the proton, as modelled within the framework of the PYTHIA Monte Carlo, gives a value of (kT) = 1.69 ± 0.18 -0.20+0.18 GeV for the γp centre-of-mass energy range 134 < W < 251 GeV. This result is in agreement with the previously observed trend in hadron-hadron scattering for (kT) to rise with interaction energy. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Multiplicity moments of charged particles in deep inelastic e+p scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.4 pb-1. The moments for Q2 > 1000 GeV2 were studied in the current region of the Breit frame. The evolution of the moments was investigated as a function of restricted regions in polar angle and, for the first time, both in the transverse momentum and in absolute momentum of final-state particles. Analytic perturbative QCD predictions in conjunction with the hypothesis of Local Parton-Hadron Duality (LPHD) reproduce the trends of the moments in polar-angle regions, although some …

Doubly Perturbed S_3 Neutrinos And The S_{13} Mixing Parameter, Joseph Schechter, Renata Jora, M. Naeem Shahid
Physics - All Scholarship
We further study a predictive model for the masses and mixing matrix of three Majorana neutrinos. At zeroth order the model yielded degenerate neutrinos and a generalized ``tribimaximal" mixing matrix. At first order the mass splitting was incorporated and the tribimaximal mixing matrix emerged with very small corrections but with a zero value for the parameter $s_{13}$. In the present paper a different, assumed weaker, perturbation is included which gives a non zero value for $s_{13}$ and further corrections to other quantities. These corrections are worked out and their consequences discussed under the simplifying assumption that the conventional CP violation …

First it is shown that the tree amplitude for pion pion scattering in the minimal linear sigma model has an exact expression which is proportional to a geometric series in the quantity (s-$m_\pi^2$)/($m_B^2-m_\pi^2$), where $m_B$ is the sigma mass which appears in the Lagrangian and is the only a priori unknown parameter in the model. This induces an infinite series for every predicted scattering length in which each term corresponds to a given order in the chiral perturbation theory counting. It is noted that, perhaps surprisingly, the pattern, though not the exact values, of chiral perturbation theory predictions for both …

This paper describes the development and optimization of chiral, non-polar media with large second-order nonlinear optical responses. We employ molecular engineering, quantum-mechanical sum-over-states theory, and measurements of molecular hyperpolarizability by means of Kleinman-disallowed hyper-Rayleigh scattering in order to understand molecular properties. Then we analyze the appropriate arrangement of the chromophores that produce an optimum axial nonlinear optical medium. Chromophores with large Kleinman disallowed traceless symmetric second rank tensor hyper-polarizabilities β can be aligned so as to result in large susceptibilities, (2), in structures that lack polar order. We found that Λ-shaped chromophores with C2v or similar symmetry are good candidates …

We apply the nonperturbative optimized linear δ expansion method to the O(N) scalar field model in three dimensions to determine the transition temperature of a dilute homogeneous Bose gas. Our results show that the shift of the transition temperature ΔTc/Tc of the interacting model, compared with the ideal-gas transition temperature, really behaves as γan1/3 where a is the s-wave scattering length and n is the number density. For N=2 our calculations yield the value γ=3.059.

Part I of this series [J. Chem. Phys. 111, 7599 (1999)] describes a simulation of H(2) adsorbed within zeolite Na-A in which a block Lanczos procedure is used to generate the first several (9) rotational eigenstates of H(2), modeled as a rigid rotor, and equilibrated at a given temperature via Monte Carlo sampling. Here, we show that rotational states are strongly perturbed by the electrostatic fields in the solid. Wave functions and densities of rotational energy states are presented. Simulated neutron spectra are compared with inelastic neutron scattering data. Comparisons are made with IR spectra in which rotational levels may …

Cooperative Magnetism And The Preisach Model, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
Cooperative and noncooperative magnetization processes in magnetic nanostructures are investigated. Using model calculations it is shown that the Preisach model and related approaches, such as Henkel, ΔM, and ΔH plots, describe magnetism on a mean-field level and cannot account for intra- and inter-granular cooperative effects. For example, the ΔM plot of a nucleation-controlled two-domain particle gives the false impression of a positive intergranular interaction. A simple but nontrivial cooperative model, consisting of two interacting but nonequivalent particles, is used to show that cooperative effects are most pronounced for narrow switching-field distributions, i.e., for nearly rectangular loops. …

The magnetism of antimony overlayers on a ferromagnetic substrate is investigated by spin-polarized inverse photoemission and explained in terms of a spin-dependent envelope-function approximation (SDEFA). The atomic structure of the films, which were deposited by sputtering Sb onto a NiMnSb(001) substrate, is characterized by a unique combination of three features: (i) NiMnSb is a highly spin-polarized semi-Heusler alloy predicted to be halfmetallic, (ii) antimony is a semimetal, exhibiting a band structure reminiscent of indirect-gap semiconductors, and (iii) the small lattice mismatch ensures a well-controlled interface. Combined x-ray absorption spectroscopy and spin-polarized inverse photoemission yield a layer-resolved spin polarization decaying on …

Parity violation in p-wave neutron resonances of 121Sb, 123Sb, and 127I has been measured by transmission of a longitudinally polarized neutron beam through natural antimony and iodine targets. The measurements were performed at the pulsed spallation neutron source of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Five statistically significant parity violation effects were observed in 121Sb, one effect in 123Sb, and seven effects in 127I. The weak interaction rms matrix elements and the corresponding spreading widths were determined.

Parity nonconservation (PNC) has been studied in neutron p-wave resonances of 117Sn. The longitudinal asymmetries were measured for 29 p-wave resonances in the neutron energy range 0.8 eV to 1100 eV. Statistically significant PNC effects were observed for four resonances. A statistical analysis determined the rms weak mixing matrix element and the weak spreading width. A weak spreading width of Γw=(0.28-0.15+0.56)×10-7 eV was obtained for117Sn.

We have used low-temperature cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CLS) to probe the spatial distribution and energies of electronic defects near GaN/Al2O3 interfaces grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). Cross sectional secondary electron microscopy CLS shows systematic variations in impurity/defect emissions over a wide range of HVPE GaN/Sapphire electronic properties. These data, along with electrochemical capacitance–voltage profiling and secondary ion mass spectrometry, provide a consistent picture of near-interface doping by O diffusion from Al2O3 into GaN, over a range 100–1000 nm.

We present the results of a systematic study of the dark current in each pixel of a charged-coupled device chip. It was found that the Arrhenius plot, at temperatures between 222 and 291 K, deviated from a linear behavior in the form of continuous bending. However, as a first approximation, the dark current, D, can be expressed as: D=Dₒ exp(−ΔE/kT),where ΔE is the activation energy, k is Boltzmann’s constant, and T the absolute temperature. It was found that ΔE and the exponential prefactor Dₒ follow the Meyer–Neldel rule (MNR) for all of the more than 222,000 investigated pixels. The isokinetic …

The nature of the interaction of the transition-state analogue inhibitor l-leucinephosphonic acid (LPA) with the leucine aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) was investigated. LPA was shown to be a competitive inhibitor at pH 8.0 with a Ki of 6.6 μM. Electronic absorption spectra, recorded at pH 7.5 of [CoCo(AAP)], [CoZn(AAP)], and [ZnCo(AAP)] upon addition of LPA suggest that LPA interacts with both metal ions in the dinuclear active site. EPR studies on the Co(II)-substituted forms of AAP revealed that the environments of the Co(II) ions in both [CoZn(AAP)] and [ZnCo(AAP)] become highly asymmetric and constrained upon the addition of …

As aircraft age, corrosion forms upon unobservable surfaces, particularly at the junction of the sheet aluminum and the steel rivets used to attach the sheets to the airframe, degrading the aircraft s airworthiness. Previous research developed a noninvasive technique for the evaluation of the material composition of aluminum surfaces, utilizing the information encoded in the energy spectra of Compton-scattered gamma emissions. The spectra are gathered by a six-element, high purity germanium detector array. A, first principles, deterministic computer code is used to reconstruct a two-dimensional map of the electron density of aluminum samples. Previous efforts, to image pure aluminum samples, …
