Vector Meson Dominance Model For Radiative Decays Involving Light Scalar Mesons, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Masayasu Harada
Physics - All Scholarship
We study a vector dominance model which predicts a fairly large number of currently interesting decay amplitudes of the types S -> \gamma \gamma, V -> S \gamma and S -> V \gamma, where S and V denote scalar and vector mesons, in terms of three parameters. As an application, the model makes it easy to study in detail a recent proposal to boost the ratio Gamma(phi -> f_0 gamma) / Gamma(phi -> a_0 gamma) by including the isospin violating a_0 - f_0 mixing. However we find that this effect is actually small in our model.

If our 3 + 1-dimensional universe is a brane or domain wall embedded in a higher dimensional space, then a phenomenon we term the “clash of symmetries” provides a new method of breaking some continuous symmetries. A global
Gcts ⊗ Gdiscrete symmetry is spontaneously broken to Hcts ⊗ Hdiscrete, where the continuous subgroup Hcts can be embedded in several different ways in the parent group Gcts, and Hdiscrete < Gdiscrete. A certain class of topological domain wall solutions connect two vacua that are invariant under differently embedded Hcts subgroups. There is then enhanced symmetry breakdown to the intersection of these two subgroups on the domain wall. This is the “clash”. In the brane limit, we obtain a configuration with Hcts symmetries in the bulk but the smaller intersection symmetry on the brane itself. We illustrate this idea using a permutation symmetric three-Higgstriplet toy model exploiting the distinct I−, U− and V − spin U(2) subgroups of U(3). The three disconnected portions of the vacuum manifold can be treated symmetrically through the construction of a three-fold planar domain wall junction configuration, with our universe at the nexus. A possible con-

The DØ Collaboration has studied for the first time the properties of hadron-collider jets reconstructed with a successive-combination algorithm based on relative transverse momenta (k ┴) of energy clusters. Using the standard value D=1.0 of the jet-separation parameter in the k ┴ algorithm, we find that the pT of such jets is higher than the ET of matched jets reconstructed with cones of radius R=0.7, by about 5 (8) GeV at pT ≈'90 (240) GeV. To examine internal jet structure, the k ┴ algorithm is applied within D=0.5 jets to resolve any …

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs detectors which are capable of simultaneously measuring the ionization and phonon energies deposited by a particle collision. These detectors are 1-cm-thick, 7-cm-diameter crystals of either germanium or silicon with a thin film of aluminum and tungsten patterned on the surface. This presentation discusses the testing regimen that a typical CDMS detector undergoes before it gets approval for final installation at the CDMS II deep site in Soudan, MN which will come online in early 2002. Now that our technology is relatively stable, the main focus of our test facilities is to provide quality …

Gold Schottky-barrier diodes (SBDs) were fabricated on vapor-phase-grown single-crystal ZnO. Deep-level transient spectroscopy, using these SBDs, revealed the presence of four electron traps, the major two having levels at 0.12 eV and 0.57 below the conduction band. Comparison with temperature-dependent Hall measurements suggests that the 0.12 eV level has a temperature activated capture cross section with a capture barrier of about 0.06 eV and that it may significantly contribute to the free-carrier density. Based on the concentrations of defects other than this shallow donor, we conclude that the quality of the vapor-phase-grown ZnO studied here supercedes that of other single-crystal …

The Intermediate-Period Cepheid Strip Stars, Edward G. Schmidt
Edward Schmidt Publications
To explore the population of variable stars that fall between RR Lyrae stars and classical Cepheids, we have obtained extensive photometric observations for 56 stars with periods between 0.6 and 1.0 days. For these stars and an additional 10, we have examined the form and stability of the light curves to explore the variety of types of stars in this period regime. We conclude that the majority of the sample are Bailey type ab RR Lyrae stars. However, a surprising number that possibly exhibit the Blazhko effect are found. There are a half-dozen other stars that do not appear to …

High-order harmonic emission is investigated by numerical solution of the weakly relativistic, two-dimensional Schrödinger equation for the case of ultra-intense laser-driven tightly bound systems (for example, multiply charged ions such as O7+ exposed to laser fields of the order of 1018 W cm-2 at 248 nm). In contrast to their usual substantial decrease, the low-order harmonics having an energy less than the ionization potential exhibit a high efficiency (i.e. intense) plateau with a well defined cutoff. The shape of this plateau is found to depend on the shape of the binding potential. A classical “surfing” mechanism for …

Stark Shifts And Transition Probabilities In The Ne Ii Spectrum, Stevan Djenize, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Milan S. Dimitrijevic
Articles
Stark shifts (d) and transition probabilities of the spontaneous emission (Einstein's A values) of forty two singly charged neon ( ) ion spectral lines have been measured in a linear, low pressure, pulsed arc at 35 300 K electron temperature and 1.83 10 23 m -3 electron density. Transition probabilities have been obtained using the relative line intensity ratio (RLIR) method. Stark shift values have also been calculated, using the semiclassical perturbation formalism (SCPF). The measured and calculated shift values and the measured A values have been compared to the existing data taken from available data sources.

We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, αs(Mz ), extracted from inclusive jet production in pp̅ collisions at √s =1800 GeV. The QCD prediction for the evolution of αs with jet transverse energy ET is tested over the range 40 TET for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in the region below 250 GeV. The value of αs at the mass of the Z0 boson averaged over the range 40 < T < 250 GeV is found to be αs(Mz )= 0.1178 ± 0.0001(stat)-0.0095+0.0081 (expt. syst). The broad emission lines (BELs) of quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are important diagnostics of the relative abundances and overall metallicity in the gas. Here we present new theoretical predictions for several UV BELs. We focus specifically on the relative nitrogen abundance as a metallicity indicator, based on the expected secondary enrichment of nitrogen at metallicities Z≳0.2 Z☉. Among the lines we consider, NIII]λ1750/OIII]λ1664, NVλ1240/(CIVλ1549+OVIλ1034), AND NV/HeIIλ1640 are the most robust diagnostics. We argue, in particular, that the average N V BEL is not dominated by scattered Lyα photons from a broad absorption-line wind. We then …

Electronic-Structure-Based Investigation Of Magnetism In The Fe8 Molecular Magnet, Mark R. Pederson, Jens Kortus, S. N. Khanna
Physics Publications
We have performed density-functional-based electronic structure calculations on a single Fe8 molecular nanomagnet. Our calculated total moments and local moments are in excellent agreement with experiment. By including spin–orbit coupling we determine the easy, medium, and hard axes and find the ordering of the principle axes also agrees with experiment. From our calculated anisotropy Hamiltonian, we calculate the oscillations in the tunnel splittings and compare to the experimental results.

The ever-increasing performance and economy of operation requirements placed on commercial and military transport aircraft are resulting in very complex systems. As a result, the use of fiber optic component technology has lead to high data throughput, immunity to EMI, reduced certification and maintenance costs and reduced weight features. In particular, in avionic systems, data integrity and high data rates are necessary for stable flight control. Fly-by-Light systems that use optical signals to actuate the flight control surfaces of an aircraft have been suggested as a solution to the EMI problem in avionic systems. Current fly-by-light systems are limited by …

Temperature Dependence Of Silicon Carrier Effective Masses With Application To Femtosecondreflectivity Measurements, D. Mark Riffe

The conductivity effective masses of electrons and holes in Si are calculated for carrier temperatures from 1 to 3000 K. The temperature dependence of the electron mass is calculated by use of a phenomenological model of conduction-band nonparabolicity that has been fitted to experimental measurements of the dependence of the electron conductivity effective mass on carrier concentration. The hole mass is investigated by tight-binding calculations of the valence bands, which have been adjusted to match experimental values of the valence-band curvature parameters at the top of the valence band. The calculations are in excellent agreement with femtosecond-laser reflectivity measurements of …

We have measured neutron resonances in the palladium isotopes 104, 105, and 110 for neutron energies from 1 to 2100 eV. Many new p-wave resonances have been observed. Their neutron widths and, in several cases, the radiative widths were measured. The average level spacings and the s-wave and p-wave neutron strength functions were determined. The time-of-flight method was used for both neutron total cross section measurements and total (n,γ) reaction yield measurements at the pulsed spallation neutron source of Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Well established resonance spectroscopy for these isotopes is essential for the analysis of parity violation data …

Phase And Absorption Gratings For Electrons, Hong Gao, Glen Gronniger, Daniel Friemund, Alex Cronin
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We report the experimental realization of phase and absorption gratings for electrons. Phase gratings made with standing waves of light with a periodicity of 266 nm are used to diffract 380 eV electrons [1]. Material gratings of 100 and 200 nm periodicity are used to diffract 500 eV electrons. We are exploring the possibility to use these gratings for low energy electron interferometry.

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Of Soot Formed In Laminar Premixed Ethylene Flames, Hai Wang, Bin Zhao, Barbara E. Wyslouzil, Kiril A. Streletzky
Physics Faculty Publications
We used small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to measure soot development in one-dimensional, laminarpremixed flames. Scattering spectra were collected for two sooting ethylene/oxygen/argon flames at six positions above the burner surface. A detailed analysis of the scattering signals yielded the basic properties of the soot size distributions as a function of position. The experiments demonstrate that SANS can be used to extract spatially resolved, quantitative information about incipient soot formation and growth with better particle size resolution than light scattering and extinction.

We report the detailed studies of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and thermoelectric power on the charge-density-wave (CDW) material Lu5Rh4Si10 in the vicinity of its transition temperature T0 ∼ 147 K. Pronounced thermal hystereses loops between heating and cooling cycles have been observed in all measured quantities, making this system very unique as compared to other isostructural compounds such as Lu5Ir4Si10. The thermal hysteresis features in Lu5Rh4Si10 are attributed to the presence of metastable states arising from pinning of the CDW phase to impurities. In addition, the measured physical quantities are magnetic field independent up to 8 T, …

A formal multipole expansion of tensor functions dependent on several vector parameters is obtained in an invariant differential form. We apply this result to derive multipole expansions of finite rotation matrices in terms of finite sums of bipolar harmonics. The multipole expansion in terms of bipolar harmonics of unit vectors r1 and r2 are analyzed for functions of the type f (r)Ylm( r) (with r = r1 − r2), which are important in two-center problems. As another example of the application of the multipole expansion technique, reduction formulae are obtained for tensor constructions …

The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Mark E. Fels, Charles G. Torre
All Physics Faculty Publications
We consider a version of Palais' principle of symmetric criticality (PSC) that is applicable to the Lie symmetry reduction of Lagrangian field theories. Given a group action on a space of fields, PSC asserts that for any group-invariant Lagrangian, the equations obtained by restriction of Euler–Lagrange equations to group-invariant fields are equivalent to the Euler–Lagrange equations of a canonically defined, symmetry-reduced Lagrangian. We investigate the validity of PSC for local gravitational theories built from a metric and show that there are two independent conditions which must be satisfied for PSC to be valid. One of these conditions, obtained previously in …

Unlike ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors, large space-based systems will not be rigid structures. When the end stations of the laser interferometer are freely flying spacecraft, the armlengths will change due to variations in the spacecraft positions along their orbital trajectories, so the precise equality of the arms that is required in a laboratory interferometer to cancel laser phase noise is not possible. However, using a method discovered by Tinto and Armstrong, a signal can be constructed in which laser phase noise exactly cancels out, even in an unequal arm interferometer. We examine the case where the ratio of the …
Quantum Dynamics Of The Polarized Gowdy T3 Model, Charles G. Torre
Quantum Dynamics Of The Polarized Gowdy T3 Model, Charles G. Torre
All Physics Faculty Publications
The polarized Gowdy T3 vacuum spacetimes are characterized, modulo gauge, by a “point particle” degree of freedom and a function φ that satisfies a linear field equation and a nonlinear constraint. The quantum Gowdy model has been defined by using a representation for φ on a Fock space F. Using this quantum model, it has recently been shown that the dynamical evolution determined by the linear field equation for φ is not unitarily implemented on F. In this paper, (1) we derive the classical and quantum model using the “covariant phase space” formalism, (2) we show that time evolution is …

Atmospheric Turbulence Conditions Leading To Focused And Folded Sonic Boom Wave Fronts, Andrew A. Piacsek
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
The propagation and subsequent distortion of sonic booms with rippled wave fronts are investigated theoretically using a nonlinear time-domain finite-difference scheme. This work seeks to validate the rippled wave front approach as a method for explaining the significant effects of turbulence on sonic booms [A. S. Pierce and D. J. Maglieri, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 51, 702–721 (1971)]. A very simple description of turbulence is employed in which velocity perturbations within a shallow layer of the atmosphere form strings of vortices characterized by their size and speed. Passage of a steady-state plane shock front through such a vortex layer …

Two-dimensional Non-Commutative Open String (NCOS) theory, well-defined perturbatively, may also be studied at strong coupling and for large D-string charge by making use of the Holographic duality. We analyze the zero mode dynamics of a closed string in the appropriate background geometry and map the results onto a sector of strongly coupled NCOS dynamics. We find an elaborate classical picture that shares qualitative similarities with the SL(2,R) WZW model. In the quantum problem, we compute propagators and part of the energy spectrum of the theory; the latter involves interesting variations in the density of states as a function …

Light backscatter through cream at wavelengths of 450 to 900 nm was measured for fiber separation distances from 2 to 6.5 mm and for cream containing 10 to ~40 weight percent (wt%) milkfat. Unhomogenized cream (~40 wt% milkfat) was mixed with skim milk (~0.05 wt% milkfat) to yield samples with five different milkfat levels. Three optical response models were tested for correlation with milkfat content: one using the light intensity measurement at a single separation distance, the second …

Rational Generalized Moonshine From Abelian Orbifoldings Of The Moonshine Module, Rossen Ivanov, Michael Tuite

We consider orbifoldings of the Moonshine Module with respect to the abelian group generated by a pair of commuting Monster group elements with one of prime order p = 2, 3, 5, 7 and the other of order pk for k = 1 or k prime. We show that constraints arising from meromorphic orbifold conformal field theory allow us to demonstrate that each orbifold partition function with rational coefficients is either constant or is a hauptmodul for an explicitly found modular fixing group of genus zero. We thus confirm in the cases considered the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for all rational …
