Navigating Seismic Anisotropy, With Applications To Alaska, Aakash Gupta
Navigating Seismic Anisotropy, With Applications To Alaska, Aakash Gupta
Geosciences
Seismic anisotropy characterizes how elastic waves travel through solid materials with different speeds, depending on the direction of the waves and the direction of particle motion of the waves. Evidence of seismic anisotropy in the Earth is widespread, from seismic waves sampling the crust, mantle and even the core, to active-source, industry-scale seismic experiments, to laboratory mea surements of rock samples from boreholes or at the surface. Global models of the Earth provide a highly averaged image of anisotropy. Studies based on shear wave splitting measurements from local and global earthquakes indicate that the anisotropy in the Earth is much …
Examination Of Differences Of Similar-Sized Martian Craters At The Simple-Complex Transition As Revealed By High-Resolution Imaging And Stereo-Derived Topography, Lindsey Dorn
Geosciences
Impact craters on Mars have a wide range of morphologies, and the relationship between the mechanics of their formation and their eventual morphologies is still not completely understood. By examining craters within a narrow diameter range, impact energies are constrained to similar values - enabling focused investigation of target properties and their influence on crater excavation and modification. There is a transition from simple bowl-shaped depressions to complex craters with terraced walls and central floor structures with increasing crater diameter. We analyzed target influences on morphology by examining eleven well-preserved craters of varying morphologies in the 7 to 9 km …
Ice Surface Change And Flow Dynamics Analysis Of Sít’ Tlein (Malaspina Glacier) Through Remote Sensing, Victor Devaux-Chupin
Ice Surface Change And Flow Dynamics Analysis Of Sít’ Tlein (Malaspina Glacier) Through Remote Sensing, Victor Devaux-Chupin
Geosciences
Sít’ Tlein, located in southeast Alaska, is the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Periglacial lake expansion, low-lying bed, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean put its glacier lobe at risk of rapid retreat. Its disappearance would equate to removing an area of land about half the size of Rhode Island. Sít’ Tlein exhibits complex ice flow responsible for its iconic folded moraines, and for its heterogeneous ice resupply in its lobe, which occasionally surges. This lobe is gradually mantled by debris and vegetation as the ice flow fades towards its margins, protecting it from melting. This the sis is …

Multi-Scale Insar Investigations Of Anthropogenic And Natural Processes In The American Southwest, Emily Jo Graves
Geosciences
Arid regions in the American Southwest undergo measurable surface deformation driven by variations in subsurface fluid pressure, and other natural and anthropogenic processes. These processes range from regional scale aquifer dynamics to local oil and gas wellsite activities. This dissertation produces and then utilizes InSAR-derived average velocity fields and displacement time series to reveal and understand these multi-scale processes, their interactions, and impacts for a portion of the American Southwest. Chapter 1 discusses the climate and natural and anthropogenic processes present in our study area. In Chapter 2, we generate detailed large scale average velocity maps that reveal deformation associated …

Security Vulnerabilities And Defense Tactics For Generative Ai Application Development, Kyle Klein
University Honors Theses
Generative AI (GenAI) applications such as OpenAI's ChatGPT leverage large language models (LLMs) trained on enormous amounts of data to accomplish tasks such as document editing, summarization, and query response. Chatbots and LLM programs that are equipped with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) have the ability to draw upon data provided by developers and users to improve the quality of the program's responses. LLM technology has even expanded to generate images, audio, and video from user instructions. Designed around unpredictable user input and typically composed of many opaque components, LLM software products face a paradigm shift of new, constantly evolving security challenges. …
Content And Consequences: Impact Of Representation In Stem Higher Education Instructional Content On Marginalized Students, Nichole Ventura
Content And Consequences: Impact Of Representation In Stem Higher Education Instructional Content On Marginalized Students, Nichole Ventura
Doctorate in Education
This qualitative study examined representation of historically marginalized students in STEM instructional content at the higher education level and its impact on their learning experiences. Despite growing diversity initiatives in STEM enrollment, curricular materials often fail to reflect the identities of underrepresented students. Using critical theory and interpretivist approaches, this research investigated how representation—or its absence—shapes students' sense of belonging, academic identity formation, and persistence. Through semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students from historically marginalized backgrounds, and purposeful sampling, this study captured the lived experiences of students engaging with STEM instructional materials. Interview protocols explored how students perceive their representation in …
Changepoint Detection As Model Selection: A General Framework, Michael A. Grantham
Changepoint Detection As Model Selection: A General Framework, Michael A. Grantham
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation presents a general framework for changepoint detection based on ℓ0 model selection. The core method, Iteratively Reweighted Fused Lasso (IRFL), improves upon the generalized lasso by adaptively reweighting penalties to enhance support recovery and minimize criteria such as the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). The approach allows for flexible modeling of seasonal patterns, linear and quadratic trends, and autoregressive dependence in the presence of changepoints.
Simulation studies demonstrate that IRFL achieves accurate changepoint detection across a wide range of challenging scenarios, including those involving nuisance factors such as trends, seasonal patterns, and serially correlated errors. The framework is …
Gradient-Based Model Shortcut Detection For Time Series Classification, Salomon Ibarra, Frida Cantu, Kaixiong Zhou, Li Zhang
Gradient-Based Model Shortcut Detection For Time Series Classification, Salomon Ibarra, Frida Cantu, Kaixiong Zhou, Li Zhang
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Deep learning models have attracted lots of research attention in time series classification (TSC) task in the past two decades. Recently, deep neural networks (DNN) have surpassed classical distance-based methods and achieved state-of-the-art performance. Despite their promising performance, deep neural networks (DNNs) have been shown to rely on spurious correlations present in the training data, which can hinder generalization. For instance, a model might incorrectly associate the presence of grass with the label "cat" if the training set have majority of cats lying in grassy backgrounds. However, the shortcut behavior of DNNs in time series remain under-explored. Most existing shortcut …
Early Conceptual Sketches Of Blended Reality And The Precursor To The Bbs Quad (2022), David Smith
Early Conceptual Sketches Of Blended Reality And The Precursor To The Bbs Quad (2022), David Smith
Publications and Research
This document contains two original hand-drawn conceptual sketches created in early 2022, representing the earliest visual formulations of what would later evolve into the Balanced Blended Space (BBS) framework. The drawings predate my first conversations with ChatGPT and were produced as part of my independent sabbatical research into blended environments, mediated performance, and human–machine interaction.
The first drawing examines human–computational mediation, perception, and internal mapping. The second sketch—later referred to informally as the “BBS Quad”—extends this idea by reconciling cognition–computation symmetry with physical–virtual spatial relationships. Published together, these images document the conceptual foundations of the BBS framework prior to its …

The purpose of this research investigate how undergraduate students in Calculus I at Utah State University learn and reflect on their level of understanding of Calculus I. In the study, self-assessment practices refer to students reflecting on what they have learned, rating their level of understanding and providing examples that illustrate their level of understanding. The structured and unstructured self-assessment rubrics were the two types of self-assessment rubrics used in the study. The structured self-assessment rubric provides a clear list of objectives of Calculus I topics for students to rate themselves on, while the unstructured self-assessment rubric is an open …
Machine Learning Applications: Cell Tracking And Nonparametric Estimation Of Non-Smooth Divergences, Mina Mahbub Hossain
Machine Learning Applications: Cell Tracking And Nonparametric Estimation Of Non-Smooth Divergences, Mina Mahbub Hossain
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis brings together two important research directions: how to compare different sets of data more accurately, and how to better understand how brain cancer cells move and change shape.
In the first part, we look at a problem in statistics: measuring how different two data sources are from each other. Traditional methods often make strong assumptions, which may not always hold in real situations. Our approach avoids those assumptions by using an ensemble method, a way of combining many weak estimators into one stronger result. This makes the method more flexible and reliable, especially when dealing with complex or …
A Software Framework For Translating Onnx Models Onto The Lace-C3a Hardware, Shawn Jones
A Software Framework For Translating Onnx Models Onto The Lace-C3a Hardware, Shawn Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Modern computers are powerful, but they are not always efficient enough for small, low power systems like those used on satellites and scientific instruments. To solve this problem, engineers often turn to FPGAs—reconfigurable computer chips that can be customized to run specific tasks much faster and with far less energy than ordinary processors. However, finding the best possible design for an FPGA program is extremely difficult because there are millions of ways a design could be built, and only a small fraction of them actually perform well.
This thesis presents SNOW, a new framework that helps automate the search for …
An Investigation Of Paleoclimate Through A Sedimentological Lens In The Gulf Of Mexico And Western North Pacific, Sarah Monica
An Investigation Of Paleoclimate Through A Sedimentological Lens In The Gulf Of Mexico And Western North Pacific, Sarah Monica
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the use of sediment cores as proxy data for the reconstruction of paleoclimatic and environmental conditions. Human-caused climate change is leading to dramatic shifts in the global climate. As the instrumental record of climate is relatively short compared to the amount of time Earth has experienced weather, this work aims to extend our knowledge of climate beyond the instrumental record, thereby improving our holistic understanding of the climate system. In Chapter one, sediment cores from the central Texas inner shelf are used to produce a record of intense tropical cyclone (TC) activity over a ~4500-year period. X-Ray …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Sinkhole formation poses a significant geohazard in karst regions, where unpredictable subsurface erosion often necessitates costly grouting for stabilization. Accurate estimation of grout volume remains a persistent challenge due to spatial variability, site-specific conditions, and the limitations of traditional empirical methods. This study introduces a novel machine learning-based regression model for grout volume prediction that integrates cone penetration test (CPT)-derived Sinkhole Resistance Ratio (SRR) values, spatial correlations between CPT and grouting points (GPs), and field-recorded grout volumes from six sinkhole sites in Florida. Three data transformation methods, the Proximal Allocation Method (PAM), the Equitable Distribution Method (EDM), and the Threshold-based …

Upright-Net+: Enhanced Learning Of Upright Orientation For 3d Point Clouds, Xufang Pang, Feng Li, Hongjie Zhuang, Ning Ding, Xiaopin Zhong, Shengfeng He, Wenxi Liu, Bo Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automatic 3D shape analysis is heavily influenced by the pose of input 3D models, as the continuous nature of pose space introduces complexities that usually exceed the encoding capacities of standard deep learning frameworks. To tackle this challenge, we present Upright-Net+, an enhancement of our previous model, Upright-Net, specifically developed for estimating upright orientation in 3D point clouds. Our approach is grounded in the design principle that ”form ever follows function,” treating the natural base of an object as a functional structure that stabilizes it in its typical pose, influenced by physical laws and geometric properties. We reformulate the continuous …
Hybrid-Balance Gflownet For Solving Vehicle Routing Problems, Ni Zhang, Zhiguang Cao
Hybrid-Balance Gflownet For Solving Vehicle Routing Problems, Ni Zhang, Zhiguang Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing GFlowNet-based methods for vehicle routing problems (VRPs) typically employ Trajectory Balance (TB) to achieve global optimization but often neglect important aspects of local optimization. While Detailed Balance (DB) addresses local optimization more effectively, it alone falls short in solving VRPs, which inherently require holistic trajectory optimization. To address these limitations, we introduce the Hybrid-Balance GFlowNet (HBG) framework, which uniquely integrates TB and DB in a principled and adaptive manner by aligning their intrinsically complementary strengths. Additionally, we propose a specialized inference strategy for depot-centric scenarios like the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), leveraging the depot node's greater flexibility in …

Uniteformer: Unifying Node And Edge Modalities In Transformers For Vehicle Routing Problem, Dian Meng, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Gao, Yaoxin Wu, Yaqing Hou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Neural solvers for the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) have typically relied on either node or edge inputs, limiting their flexibility and generalization in real-world scenarios. We propose UniteFormer, a unified neural solver that supports node-only, edge-only, and hybrid input types through a single model trained via joint edge-node modalities. UniteFormer introduces: (1) a mixed encoder that integrates graph convolutional networks and attention mechanisms to collaboratively process node and edge features, capturing cross-modal interactions between them; and (2) a parallel decoder enhanced with query mapping and a feed-forward layer for improved representation. The model is trained with REINFORCE by randomly sampling …

Large Language Models As End-To-End Combinatorial Optimization Solvers, Xia Jiang, Yaoxin Wu, Minshuo Li, Zhiguang Cao, Yingqian Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Combinatorial optimization (CO) problems, central to decision-making scenarios like logistics and manufacturing, are traditionally solved using problem-specific algorithms requiring significant domain expertise. While large language models (LLMs) have shown promise in automating CO problem solving, existing approaches rely on intermediate steps such as code generation or solver invocation, limiting their generality and accessibility. This paper introduces a novel framework that empowers LLMs to serve as end-to-end CO solvers by directly mapping natural language problem descriptions to solutions. We propose a two-stage training strategy: supervised fine-tuning (SFT) imparts LLMs with solution generation patterns from domain-specific solvers, while a feasibility-and-optimality-aware reinforcement learning …

Multi-Task Vehicle Routing Solver Via Mixture Of Specialized Experts Under State-Decomposable Mdp, Yuxin Pan, Zhiguang Cao, Chengyang Gu, Liu Liu, Peilin Zhao, Yize Chen, Fangzhen Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing neural methods for multi-task vehicle routing problems (VRPs) typically learn unified solvers to handle multiple constraints simultaneously. However, they often underutilize the compositional structure of VRP variants, each derivable from a common set of basis VRP variants. This critical oversight causes unified solvers to miss out the potential benefits of basis solvers, each specialized for a basis VRP variant. To overcome this limitation, we propose a framework that enables unified solvers to perceive the shared-component nature across VRP variants by proactively reusing basis solvers, while mitigating the exponential growth of trained neural solvers. Specifically, we introduce a State-Decomposable MDP …

Learning Memory-Enhanced Improvement Heuristics For Flexible Job Shop Scheduling, Jiaqi Wang, Zhiguang Cao, Peng Zhao, Rui Cao, Yubin Xiao, Yuan Jiang, You Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rise of smart manufacturing under Industry 4.0 introduces mass customization and dynamic production, demanding more advanced and flexible scheduling techniques. The flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) has attracted significant attention due to its complex constraints and strong alignment with real-world production scenarios. Current deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approaches to FJSP predominantly employ constructive methods. While effective, they often fall short of reaching (near-)optimal solutions. In contrast, improvement-based methods iteratively explore the neighborhood of initial solutions and are more effective in approaching optimality. However, the flexible machine allocation in FJSP poses significant challenges to the application of this framework, including …

Mando-Llm: Heterogeneous Graph Transformers With Large Language Models For Smart Contract Vulnerability Detection, Nhat Minh Nguyen, Huu Hoang Nguyen, Long Le Thanh, Zahra Ahmadi, Thanh Nam Doan, Daoyuan Wu, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Detecting vulnerabilities in smart contracts is vital for the security and reliability of decentralized apps. To facilitate vulnerability detection, contract codes, including bug patterns, are represented as heterogeneous graphs with various nodes and edges, like control-flow and function-call graphs. However, existing graph learning techniques struggle with large, complex graphs. This paper presents MANDO-LLM, a novel framework that combines heterogeneous graph transformers (HGTs) with large language models (LLMs) for detecting vulnerabilities in smart contracts represented as heterogeneous contract graphs built upon control-flow and call graphs. MANDO-LLM uses LLMs to capture code features from control-flow and call data, customizes HGTs to learn …

Safe-Sora: Safe Text-To-Video Generation Via Graphical Watermarking, Zihan Su, Xuerui Qiu, Hongbin Xu, Tangyu Jiang, Jun-Hao Zhuang, Chun Yuan, Ming Li, Shengfeng He, Fei Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The explosive growth of generative video models has amplified the demand for reliable copyright preservation of AI-generated content. Despite its popularity in image synthesis, invisible generative watermarking remains largely underexplored in video generation. To address this gap, we propose Safe-Sora, the first framework to embed graphical watermarks directly into the video generation process. Motivated by the observation that watermarking performance is closely tied to the visual similarity between the watermark and cover content, we introduce a hierarchical coarse-to-fine adaptive matching mechanism. Specifically, the watermark image is divided into patches, each assigned to the most visually similar video frame, and further …

Jury-And-Judge Chain-Of-Thought For Uncovering Toxic Data In 3d Visual Grounding, Kaixiang Huang, Qifeng Zhang, Jin Wang, Jingru Yang, Yang Zhou, Huan Yu, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
3D Visual Grounding (3DVG) faces persistent challenges due to coarse scene-level observations and logically inconsistent annotations, which introduce ambiguities that compromise data quality and hinder effective model supervision. To address these challenges, we introduce Refer-Judge, a novel framework that harnesses the reasoning capabilities of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to identify and mitigate toxic data. At the core of Refer-Judge is a Jury-and-Judge Chain-of-Thought paradigm, inspired by the deliberative process of the judicial system. This framework targets the root causes of annotation noise: jurors collaboratively assess 3DVG samples from diverse perspectives, providing structured, multi-faceted evaluations. Judges then consolidate these insights …

Iostom: Offline Imitation Learning From Observations Via State Transition Occupancy Matching, Quang Anh Pham, Brahmanage Janaka Chathuranga Thilakarathna, Tien Mai, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Offline Learning from Observations (LfO) focuses on enabling agents to imitate expert behavior using datasets that contain only expert state trajectories and separate transition data with suboptimal actions. This setting is both practical and critical in real-world scenarios where direct environment interaction or access to expert action labels is costly, risky, or infeasible. Most existing LfO methods attempt to solve this problem through state or state-action occupancy matching. They typically rely on pretraining a discriminator to differentiate between expert and non-expert states, which could introduce errors and instability—especially when the discriminator is poorly trained. While recent discriminator-free methods have emerged, …

Misodice: Multi-Agent Imitation From Mixed-Quality Demonstrations, The Viet Bui, Tien Mai, Hong Thanh Nguyen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study offline imitation learning (IL) in cooperative multi-agent settings, where demonstrations have unlabeled mixed quality - containing both expert and suboptimal trajectories. Our proposed solution is structured in two stages: trajectory labeling and multi-agent imitation learning, designed jointly to enable effective learning from heterogeneous, unlabeled data. In the first stage, we combine advances in large language models and preference-based reinforcement learning to construct a progressive labeling pipeline that distinguishes expert-quality trajectories. In the second stage, we introduce MisoDICE, a novel multi-agent IL algorithm that leverages these labels to learn robust policies while addressing the computational complexity of large joint …

No Experts, No Problem: Avoidance Learning From Bad Demonstrations, Minh Huy Hoang, Tien Mai, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper addresses the problem of learning avoidance behavior within the context of offline imitation learning. In contrast to conventional methodologies that prioritize the replication of expert or near-expert demonstrations, our work investigates a setting where expert (or desirable) data is absent, and the objective is to learn to eschew undesirable actions by leveraging demonstrations of such behavior (i.e., learning from negative examples). To address this challenge, we propose a novel training objective grounded in the maximum entropy principle. We further characterize the fundamental properties of this objective function, reformulating the learning process as a cooperative inverse Q-learning task. Moreover, we …

Cssa-Fusion: Channel Selective And Spatial Alignment Infrared-Visible Image Fusion, Zhen Li, Zhi Zeng, Zhongrui Xiao, Ming Wen, Zhiyuan Zhang, Yibin Tian
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Infrared-visible image fusion aims to integrate complementary information from two modalities to generate images with enriched semantic content. However, existing methods often neglect two critical aspects: the design of a local–global feature enhancement architecture and spatial alignment. To address these challenges, we propose Channel Selective and Spatial Alignment Fusion (CSSA-Fusion), a novel framework composed of two synergistic modules. The first is a selective channel and redundancy suppression module, which introduces a dual-branch selective channel attention mechanism to jointly capture local saliency and global channel importance for enhanced feature representation, and an informativeness–redundancy separation strategy to suppress redundant information while preserving …

The Rise Of Parameter Specialization For Knowledge Storage In Large Language Models, Yihuai Hong, Yiran Zhao, Wei Tang, Yang Deng, Yu Rong, Wenxuan Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Over time, a growing wave of large language models from various series has been introduced to the community. Researchers are striving to maximize the performance of language models with constrained parameter sizes. However, from a microscopic perspective, there has been limited research on how to better store knowledge in model parameters, particularly within MLPs, to enable more effective utilization of this knowledge by the model. In this work, we analyze twenty publicly available open-source large language models to investigate the relationship between their strong performance and the way knowledge is stored in their corresponding MLP parameters. Our findings reveal that …

A Partition Cover Approach To Tokenization, Jia Peng Lim, Shawn Tan, Davin Choo, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Tokenization is the process of encoding strings into tokens of a fixed vocabulary size, and is widely utilized in Natural Language Processing applications. The leading tokenization algorithm today is Byte Pair Encoding (BPE), which formulates the tokenization problem as a compression problem and tackles it by performing sequences of merges. In this work, we formulate tokenization as an optimization objective, show that it is NP-hard via a simple reduction from vertex cover, and propose a polynomial-time greedy algorithm GreedTok. Our formulation naturally relaxes to the well-studied weighted maximum coverage problem which has a simple -approximation algorithm GreedWMC. Through empirical evaluations …

Multilingual reasoning remains a significant challenge for large language models (LLMs), with performance disproportionately favoring high-resource languages. Drawing inspiration from cognitive neuroscience, which suggests that human reasoning functions largely independently of language processing, we hypothesize that LLMs similarly encode reasoning and language as separable components that can be disentangled to enhance multilingual reasoning. To evaluate this, we perform a causal intervention by ablating language-specific representations at inference time. Experiments on 10 open-weight LLMs spanning 11 typologically diverse languages show that this language-specific ablation consistently boosts multilingual reasoning performance. Layer-wise analyses further confirm that language and reasoning representations can be effectively …
