Mathematicly Rigorous Quantum General Relativity, I: Pure, James Glimm Jan 2026

Mathematicly Rigorous Quantum General Relativity, I: Pure, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A pure general relativity (quantum or classical) is one lacking in matter. Such a field has a Lorentzian space time geometry. A renormalization perturbative expansion, truncated to all finite orders, establishes both the quantum and the general relativity theory with full mathematical rigor.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with a loop expansion cutoff to all finite orders for the dynamics.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production

Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm Jan 2026

Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The existence of a weak solution of the incompressible isothermal Navier-Stokes equation with given initial conditions in the Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}_{-2}$ for energy fluctuations and in $\mathcal{H}_{-3}$ for enstrophy fluctuations is assumed. The existence is uniform with respect to the Euler limit of zero viscosity $\nu$. Thus, existence of weak solutions of the Euler equation with given initial conditions is established, and these Euler solutions are the zero viscosity limit of Navier-Stokes solutions, provided the Navier-Stokes solutions exist.

The Boson Yang-Mills Field: The Loop Expansion, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Boson Yang-Mills Field: The Loop Expansion, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates convergence of the loop expansion for Yang-Mills fields.

The loop construction of perturbation theory is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and the Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with the loop expansion perturbatively renormalizable.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory convergent to all finite orders.

Two distinct Yang-Mills theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production.

The paper has sufficient generality to include existence for all cases that …

Ai-Assisted Hybrid Ga–Pso Channel Allocation Under 3gpp Tr 38.901 Uma For Efficient 5g Radio Resource Management, Sharada Narsingrao Ohatkar

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The increased traffic and heterogeneity in the 5G/B5G network require efficient radio resource management (RRM). However, the existing methods, such as GA and PSO, have poor convergence speed and require proper initial conditions. Additionally, learning-based methods have high computational complexity. Hence, in this paper, a novel AI-assisted Hybrid Channel Allocation (AI–HCA) framework is proposed by using a support vector regression (SVR)-based predictive initialization method and GA-PSO optimization. Simulation results using the 3GPP UMa channel model show that the proposed method has a 28% reduction in call blocking probability (CBP), a 15-25% enhancement in spectral efficiency (SE), and a 18-25% enhancement …

Objective: To design and evaluate an Economic Order Quantity (EOQ)–based inventory dashboard for vaccine packaging that standardizes ordering decisions and strengthens stock visibility in pharmaceutical distribution …

Neuroevolution Of Compact Search Heuristics In Sokoban, Yeonghun Lee Jan 2026

Neuroevolution Of Compact Search Heuristics In Sokoban, Yeonghun Lee

Computer Science Honors Papers

This thesis investigates whether neuroevolution can produce heuristic functions for A* search on Sokoban that are drastically more parameter-efficient than a conventional gradient-trained baseline. Sokoban is a combinatorial planning puzzle that is both NPhard and PSPACE-complete, and solving it at scale requires an accurate cost-to-go heuristic to guide search. The standard approach fixes a neural network architecture and trains it by gradient descent; this thesis investigates whether evolutionary search over network topology can find heuristics that are competitive in accuracy while using orders of magnitude fewer parameters.

Four heuristic approaches are implemented and compared on the medium-difficulty split of the …

Guidelines For Standard Basic Notations In Applied Statistics, Abhaya Indrayan, Shivani Saini Ms Jan 2026

Guidelines For Standard Basic Notations In Applied Statistics, Abhaya Indrayan, Shivani Saini Ms

COBRA Preprint Series

Whereas some statistical notations are standard and uniformly used by different workers, many are not. Varying notations lead to confusion among the readers, particularly those engaged with applied statistics material, such as medical professionals. This communication proposes that all basic notations be standardized so that the same notations are consistently used by different authors, in different books, journals, and articles for the benefit of those who are not rigorously trained statisticians. Guidelines for such standard notations are also provided. The lead must be taken by statisticians.

A Novel Lightweight Framework For Low-Light Image Enhancement Via Gaussian Denoising And Clahe, Daniel Oluwaseun Adesoji Jan 2026

A Novel Lightweight Framework For Low-Light Image Enhancement Via Gaussian Denoising And Clahe, Daniel Oluwaseun Adesoji

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Low-light image enhancement is a major challenge in digital imaging, especially in medical imaging, surveillance, and autonomous vision systems. Images captured under poor illumination often appear dark, noisy, and low in contrast, which makes it hard to observe important details. Traditional enhancement methods can improve brightness but usually introduce artifacts or increase noise. Although deep learning methods have shown strong performance, they usually require large datasets, and high computational resources. This creates a need for simpler and more efficient enhancement techniques. This study proposes a lightweight framework that incorporates Gaussian denoising with Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) to enhance …

Predicting Criminal Behavior In Major Us Cities, Madison A. Price Jan 2026

Predicting Criminal Behavior In Major Us Cities, Madison A. Price

SPARK Symposium Presentations

In recent years, especially post pandemic, there has been a decrease in crime in the United States. Unfortunately, the country’s violent crime rates are still significantly higher compared to similar high-income countries, so what predicts crime in major American cities? There is tons of research to support the idea that demographics can offer some insight into predicting crime. There are countless online resources that seek to identify major crime centrals in the United States (Petrino, 2025). In the late 1990s, researchers noticed that crime rates in cities had a downward slope due to an important contributor: demographic change (Fox & …

Investigating The Role Of Humic Acid In The Adsorption Mechanics Of Acetaminophen On Potassium Persulfate-Aged Polyethylene Terephthalate (Pet), Andrew Littleton, Maria Danielle Garrett, Phd Jan 2026

Investigating The Role Of Humic Acid In The Adsorption Mechanics Of Acetaminophen On Potassium Persulfate-Aged Polyethylene Terephthalate (Pet), Andrew Littleton, Maria Danielle Garrett, Phd

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Pharmaceutical contaminants such as acetaminophen (APAP) are showing a rising presence in aquatic environments, where their interactions with microplastics (MPs) can potentially modulate natural degradation mechanisms. Concurrent presence of the two substances has been shown to potentiate increase their individual harmful effects. This study investigates whether oxidative aging and humic-acid surface modification of PET microplastics influence APAP adsorption.

In this study, UV-aging was reproduced using an iron (II)-activated potassium persulfate (Fe(II)-KPS) oxidation system. Aqueous dissolved organic matter (DOM) is simulated using multi-hour exposure to humic acid. The MPs are then removed from the solution to examine adsorption mechanisms. While most …

Hope Is An Act, Not A Wish: An Autoethnographic Journey Of Reimagining Disability As A Catalyst For Playing With Possibility, Creativity, And Innovation Within Liminal Spaces, Jennifer Salerno Jan 2026

Hope Is An Act, Not A Wish: An Autoethnographic Journey Of Reimagining Disability As A Catalyst For Playing With Possibility, Creativity, And Innovation Within Liminal Spaces, Jennifer Salerno

Doctor of Education

This dissertation aimed to challenge and move beyond unjust social norms related to individual ability and independence, finding such norms based on a fictitious ideal of human capacity. Instead, an ethic of interdependence, such as encompasses the natural world, is defined and promoted in turn. People with disabilities are considered deficient and marginalized because they deviate from ableist norms (Flynn, 2020). They face significant barriers to establishing and maintaining relationships with nature as a result of ability expectations around how bodies should look and behave in the natural world (Wolbring & Lisitza, 2017). People with disabilities covet normality and the …

Azrag, Rehemah Gwokyalya, Shepard Ndlela, Ingo Grass, Georg Petschenka, Sunday Ekesi, Samira A. Mohamed

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The white mango scale, Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), is one of the most destructive pests of mango worldwide. Its current management in most of the invaded areas largely depends on the intensive use of chemical insecticides. Biological control using parasitoids represents one of the most effective and environmentally sustainable management options. However, in Kenya, one of Africa's leading mango-producing countries, no effective parasitoid species associated with A. tubercularis had previously been recorded. This study aimed to identify encyrtid parasitoids associated with A. tubercularis in Kenya, and to assess how bioclimatic factors influence their occurrence and habitat suitability. Mango leaves …

Additionally, spatial risk indices including Establishment Risk Index (ERI), Generation Index (GI), and Activity Index (AI) were mapped globally for current and future …

Paid Search Marketing Vs. Search Engine Optimization: Analytical Models Of Search Marketing Based On Search Engine Quality, Kai Li, Chunyang Shen, Mei Lin, Zhangxi Lin Jan 2026

Paid Search Marketing Vs. Search Engine Optimization: Analytical Models Of Search Marketing Based On Search Engine Quality, Kai Li, Chunyang Shen, Mei Lin, Zhangxi Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As search engines are leading revenue growth in online marketing, search marketing has become a popular area of academic research. Although search engine advertising has interested researchers for decades and much has been learned, one thing that puzzles scholars is why search engine optimization companies are tolerated rather than excluded from the market, even though they capture a significant share of the advertising market. In this paper, we shed light on this phenomenon and establish an analytical model based on organic search quality. Through analysis of the model, we were able to draw several intriguing conclusions. First, there is no …

Methane released from the subseafloor is significantly attenuated during upward migration, yet the preservation of methane-derived organic carbon (OC) in global deep-sea sediments remains poorly understood. Here, we measured carbon isotopes coupled with temperature-ramped analyses on various methane seepage sediments. Our results reveal a correlation between the radiocarbon (¹⁴)C) content in deep-sea surface sediments and sulfate-methane transition depth. Notably, our findings suggest that a substantial amount of (¹⁴)C-depleted OC may originate from deep-seated methane and is efficiently preserved in surface seepage sediments. We propose that the efficient OC preservation is related to microbial-mediated aggregate formation at the seawater-sediment interface, where …

The Second Minimum Size Of A Finite Subspace Partition, Esmeralda Năstase, Papa Sissokho Jan 2026

The Second Minimum Size Of A Finite Subspace Partition, Esmeralda Năstase, Papa Sissokho

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

Let V = V (d, q) denote the vector space of dimension d over Fq . A subspace partition P of V , also known as a vector space partition, is a collection of nonempty subspaces of V such that each nonzero vector of V is in exactly one subspace of P. Motivated by applications of minimum blocking sets and maximal partial t-spreads, Beutelspacher (Geom Dedic 9:425– 449, 1980) determined in a lemma the minimum possible size δ(d) over all (nontrivial) subspace partitions of V . In Heden et al. (Des Codes Cryptogr 64:265–274, 2012) and N˘astase …

Second And Fifth Graders’ Changes In Strategies For Integer Addition, Mahtob Aqazade, Laura Bofferding Jan 2026

Second And Fifth Graders’ Changes In Strategies For Integer Addition, Mahtob Aqazade, Laura Bofferding

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

Research on integer addition often attributes students’ performance to their grade level while ignoring the role of prior whole number knowledge in influencing their learning difficulties. To explore whether these difficulties are related to their grade level or persistence in using rules based on their whole-number experiences, we first paired three second-grade students with three fifth-grade students who had similar integer addition strategies on their pretest. Then, we compared their strategy changes and performance after small-group sessions and whole-class activities around integer addition (i.e., instructional intervention). Although all pairs gained from the pretest to posttest, one fifth grader still relied …

Connected Fair Detachments Of Hypergraphs I, Amin Bahmanian Jan 2026

Connected Fair Detachments Of Hypergraphs I, Amin Bahmanian

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

Let G be a hypergraph whose edges are colored. An (α, n)-detachment of G is a hypergraph obtained by splitting a vertex α into n vertices, say α1, . . . , αn , and sharing the incident edges among the subvertices. A detachment is fair if the degree of vertices and multiplicity of edges are shared as evenly as possible among the subvertices within the whole hypergraph as well as within each color class. In this paper we solve an open problem from the 1970s by finding necessary and sufficient conditions under which a k-edge-colored hypergraph …

Algorithmic Trading In Idiosyncratic-Payoff Markets: A Multi-Agent System For On-Chain Prediction Contracts, Saif Aldeen A.K. Agha Jan 2026

Algorithmic Trading In Idiosyncratic-Payoff Markets: A Multi-Agent System For On-Chain Prediction Contracts, Saif Aldeen A.K. Agha

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis documents the design, deployment, and forward-test evaluation of an evolutionary multi-agent algorithmic trading system on Polymarket, the largest decentralized prediction market. The system pairs a locally-hosted 72-billion-parameter language model with a gradient-boosted statistical filter and an evolutionary selection mechanism that maintains a population of approximately 500 autonomous trading agents. Each agent generates a probability estimate for an event, compares it to the prevailing market price, and trades the resulting disagreement.

The central empirical exercise estimates a panel regression of trade-level profit on the absolute disagreement between the agent's probability estimate and the market price, controlling for agent identity, …

Interpretable Sample Uncertainty Measures For Ranked-Choice Election Polls, Jason Liang Jan 2026

Interpretable Sample Uncertainty Measures For Ranked-Choice Election Polls, Jason Liang

CMC Senior Theses

Polling results from traditional single-choice plurality elections are readily interpretable. Simple frequentist population parameters are estimated, including each candidate’s total support and the size of the front runner's lead. If the point estimate for the size of the front runner's lead exceeds the margin of error of the lead, we can conclude that the poll shows a statistically significant front runner. However, the interpretability of these population statistics disappears when applied to ranked-choice voting elections. Because ballots rank multiple candidates and candidates are eliminated in rounds, simple population-wide parameters are not well-defined. In RCV elections, a candidate’s ability to win …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper investigates the factors influencing programmers’ adoption of AI-generated JavaScript code recommendations within the context of lightweight, function-level programming tasks. It extends prior research by (1) utilizing objective (as opposed to the typically self-reported) measurements for programmers’ adoption of AI-generated code and (2) examining whether AI-generated comments added to code recommendations and development expertise drive AI-generated code adoption. We tested these potential drivers in an online experiment with 173 programmers. Participants were asked to answer some questions to demonstrate their level of development expertise. Then, they were asked to solve a LeetCode problem without AI support. After attempting to …

Look-Ahead Cyber-Threat Forecasting For Connected And Automated Transport: A Spatio-Temporal Graph Learning Approach, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Arifa Akter Eva, M.F. Mridha, Md. Jakir Hossen Jan 2026

Look-Ahead Cyber-Threat Forecasting For Connected And Automated Transport: A Spatio-Temporal Graph Learning Approach, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Arifa Akter Eva, M.F. Mridha, Md. Jakir Hossen

Student Publications [Scholarly]

Modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS) increasingly rely on connected electronic control units (ECUs), exposing in-vehicle networks to cyber-attacks such as message injection on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. While prior work has focused on post-factum detection, this paper addresses the underexplored task of forecasting cyber-attacks before they occur. We propose a spatio-temporal graph neural network (STGNN) architecture that models CAN traffic as a dynamic graph sequence, where nodes represent active CAN IDs and edges capture statistical co-activation patterns. Each graph snapshot encodes temporal features such as inter-arrival statistics and entropy, and is processed using graph attention layers followed by …
