Very little work has been done towards the recovery of zinc from mine water because the zinc content of the water is generally low. As different from copper, which can very easily be replaced by iron in any of its solutions, zinc is very high up in the electro-chemical series and so the few metals above zinc, most of which are rare and hence expensive, cannot be used to replace zinc from its solution.

The problem considered in this report is one of the mineralogy and mode of formation of the extremely pure, large bodies of vermiculite. Mineralogically the ultrabasic intrusive, with which the economic mineral is associated, presents an array of rather unusual minerals. The determination of these minerals, their associations, and the sequence of alteration that lead to the formation of the vermiculite bodies, constitutes the problem.

A Bos-like animal, Parabos dodsoni, was recently described by Barbour and Schultz (1941, "A New Fossil Bovid from Nebraska", Bull. Univ. Nebr. The purpose of this thesis is to determine how gelatin behaves in the presence of various acids and alkalis. It is possible to titrate gelatins with acids and bases and thereby determine the relation of the pH of the solution to the amounts of acid or base combined with the gelatin. If the results are plotted, a titration curve is obtained, the value of which gives the acid and base combining properties of a certain gelatin.

Industry devoted to the cleaning of textiles has found the removal of printer's ink and lubricating oils a tedious operation.

There has been developed and perfected a series of synthetic materials which successfully meet modern needs.

The detergents, in general, have some or all of the following properties: wetting-out, dispersing, emulsifying, penetrating, and cleaning.

There seems to be a need to investigate some of these new detergents for commercial cleaning purposes.

Phosphate deposits in the western United States have been the subject of considerable discussion in the last decade, and during the last few years much interest has been aroused in them. Phosphate was first discovered in this area in 1889, but it was not until 1906 that the United States Government took active interest in the study of these deposits. The investigation by the government of the occurrence of western phosphate was begun by Weeks and Ferrier (10), and later carried on by others. The Red Lodge and Silver Star chromite deposits of Montana have stimulated much interest during periods of war. The Red Lodge deposit is 25 miles southwest of Red Lodge which is also the nearest railroad point. Several workings are scattered throughout the area, exposing lense-like ore bodies averaging 33% chrome oxide. Silver Star is a much smaller deposit 5 miles west of Silver Star, Montana, which is its nearest rail­road point. Lenses of chromite are exposed by pits and trench­es, which average approximately 36% chromic oxide.

It is known that there are large deposits of chromium ore in Stillwater and Carbon Counties in South-Central Montana. The late James F. Kemp of Columbia University, stated in 1928, that these were the largest chromium deposits in the United States and probably in the world, although they were not considered of commercial grade as compared with foreign ores.

THE first paleontological expedition of the University of Nebraska State Museum was organized in the summer of 1891 and was led by Erwin H. Barbour, now Director Emeritus of the Museum. The most important and interesting discoveries made during the season were some very peculiar spiral fossils called by the field party "Devil's Corkscrews," or Daimonelix,l which were found in the Miocene deposits near Harrison in Sioux County, Nebraska.
