The Effect Of Boron On The Hardenability Of Steel, William J. Foy

Many attempts have been made to improve iron and steel and their alloys by the addition of boron. The re­sults obtained were not encouraging for the reason that the amount of boron used, generally from 0.2 to 2.0 per cent is altogether too high. This percentage of boron ren­ders the product hard and brittle and of late the experiments with boron in this connection have been practically abandoned.

The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find some means of increasing the effective porosity and permeabil­ity of the producing sands of the Cut Bank Oil Field, with the hope that thereby the ultimate recovery of petroleum from this field may be increased. Although the percentage increase in production thus effected would undoubtedly be small, it would represent a substantial volume of petroleum in view of the great quantity of oil and gas present in this field.

In Drosophila Melanogaster the recessive gene for eyeless and its normal allelomorph, which cause in general a redaction of the size of the eye in the adult fly, are situated in the small 4th chromosome. The purpose of this experiment was to make a Cyto- logical study and comparison of the 4th chromosomes of the eyeless Drosophila and the normal plus or wild type to determine whether this recessive gene, located on the 4th chromosome, results in a difference in the number, size, formation, or location of bands.

The measurement of unsaturation in organic compounds are commonly expressed in terms of an iodine number, but as this value is not trustworthy in a number of cases, it has been suggested by earlier worker that an indication of unsaturation could be obtained by the quantitative hydrogenation of a compound and expressing the result in terms of a hydrogen number. Although such determinations have been previously made, usually at elevated temperatures and pressures, it is the purpose of this work to carry out the hydrogenation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The Dry Lake section of the Brazer formation, totalling 3100 feet in thickness, is an excellent exposure containing an abundance of fossils many of which are well preserved. The fauna indicates that the formation is to be correlated with the Upper Iowan and Chester series of the type Mississippian system in the Mississippi Valley section. Substantial fossil evidence indicates the following correlation for the Brazer formation members. The C unit represents the western equivalent of the Middle Meramec group, i.e., the Salem and St. Louis limestones. The D member is decidedly Ste. In studying the Cut Bank field and its numerous wells, it is found that dry holes are surrounded by producing wells, and also that the field as a whole is very irregular; water, oil, and gas zones in many cases following no definite pattern. In some instances, this phenomenon may be due to the lensing and thinning of the producing sands, but it is evident that this is not the only factor. There­fore, the controlling factors must be porosity and permeability.

Various electrolytes were experimented with in an attempt to deposit an iron-manganese alloy. An Alloy was obtained from a solution containing ferrous ammonium sulfate, manganous sulfate, and ammonium sulfate. Further experimentation was done in an effort to determine the optimum conditions of deposition and the highest manganese alloy which could be produced.

The subject of polyploidy has been of scientific interest for some time. The true nature of the cause of this phenomenon has been disputed ever since its existence was made known. Polyploidy is the condition in which the haploid number of the chromosomes, contained within the nucleus, is multiplied so that there is a higher number of chromosomes present than there is in the typical diploid cell of that particular plant or animal.
