Comparative Studies Of Oklahoma And Missouri Granites With Special Attention To The Heavy Minerals Of The Oklahoma Granites, Russell B. Maurer

When examined petrographically the granites of Oklahoma show a marked similarity to the granites of South­eastern Missouri. The same heavy accessory mineral suites are present in the granites of both regions and include: fluorite, zircon, apatite, titanite and epidote. This similarity was further shown by the actual correlation of the heavy mineral suites by types, these types being, based on the heavy mineral distributions of the Missouri Granites.

This thesis is concerned with the beneficiation of an oxidized lead ore. Emphasis was placed upon concentration by flotation rather than by gravity methods, although some investigation was made with the Wilfley shaking table. The concentration of lead minerals received most consideration in the problem, but wherever possible attempts were made to increase the silver and gold concentration along with the lead.

Oil and gas have been found in the Triassic strata of Wyoming. Although the Triassic has not as yet proven to be a large producing horizon it is very probable that ad­ditional oil will be found in Triassic strata in the future, and it is one of the goals at which oil well drillers aim their tools.

The use of foraminifera in the determination of geologic age, and in the correlation of strata, is one of the most important techniques in oil field stratigraphic studies. The petroleum industry in many regions relies on these microscopic life forms to determine the positions of oil-bearing horizons and to determine the tops of beds. In northern Montana the Colorado group of strata, a series of about 2,000 feet of dense, dark similar shales, is known to contain foraminifers.

This has been due to the relatively simple task of converting abundant iron ores to metallic iron. No other common metal has the durability of iron. Aluminum has sometimes been called the second most important structural metal, but its extreme softness, even in its alloys, and low melting point have barred it from heavy duty applications. Potassium is one of the essential plant nutrient elements. It is used by plants in the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates (25)² and in the formation of proteins and oils. Potassium also seems to exert many of its effects by influencing enzymatic activity in cells.

Potassium occurs as the monovalent cation on plant cells and undoubtedly exerts important effects upon such phnomona as the permiability of the cytoplasmic membranes and hydration of protoplasma. Plants assimilate potassium either from the soil solution or directly from the exchange complex.

Many important industrial applications for fatty acids and their derivatives are based on the ability of the unsaturated members of a series to combine with other molecules through the reactivity of their double bonds.

This study was undertaken with the foremost objective of determining the stratigraphy and structure of the area, and correlating it with known surrounding areas.

The method of study was through geologic mapping in the field. The formational contacts, faults and other features were studied in the field with the aid of aerial photographs. The sections were measured in the field by hand-leveling with a Brunton compass up across the exposures. The lithology of the formations was studied as the sections were measured. Jumbo Dome, a prominent landmark on the north side of the Alaska Range, is a small body of intrusive andesite surrounded by schist and by poorly consolidated sediments of Tertiary age. Frost-moved rubbles, consisting of coarse andesite blocks, almost completely mantlethe dome and have advanced outward from it across a gently sloping terrain for distances as much as 1 ¼ miles. Several different periods of rubble development are recognized, based on the amount of vegetal covering of the deposits, the preservation of their surface forms, and their degree of erosion by fluvial processes. All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Plane table and pacing methods were used in the mapping of the individual areas, but an automobile traverse was used to tie the independent areas into a composite group that would be useful for the entire zone. All land marks, section corners, roads, fence lines, drainage, and geologic features were plotted in the field and later transferred to a master map.
