The problem was the investigation of electrowinning of zinc by using a mercury cathode, employing a neutral solution of zinc sulphate and containing small amounts of zinc, in the order of ten grams zinc per liter and less. The purpose of this study was on the base of the laboratory experiments to investigate the operational data that might possibly be applied in practice or industry.

Current commercial use of the mercury cathode cell is limited to two types of electrolytic sodium cells-­the Castner cell and the Sorenson cell. Mercury as a cathode medium has also found application in polarographic analysis, a method of a simultaneous quantitative and qualitative analysis of several metal components of solution.

Information concerning the southern extent of the Mexican geosyncline was desired with the mapping of Sierra de Santa Rita, near Concepción del Oro, Zacatecas, in northern Mexico. Three Upper Jurassic and six Cretaceous formations were mapped, within which lithology and changes in thickness do not reflect proximity of this area to ancient shore lines. The first description of the Huizachal formation in northern Zacatecas is given.

Many fine-grained igneous rocks, basaltic and felsitic in character, are difficult to classify. In numer­ous cases, it is impossible to classify these types of rocks by quick methods of identification. It was hoped at the beginning of this study that refractive indices of glasses formed by quick artificial fusion of samples from selected suites of igneous rocks would show a close cor­relation in chemical composition.

In seeming contradiction to usual deductions from thermodynamics, it has been shown by De Donderi on the basis of his affinity function, by Prigogine² on the basis of the Chapman- Enskog model, and by Manes, Hofer, and Wellers using purely mathematical methods, that the rate of a chemical reaction close to equilibrium is directly proportional to the free energy difference between reactants and products. This relation may be shown to be a consequence of the theory of absolute reaction rates, also.

The California Quail is native to the coastal and semi-arid regions of California extending north into Oregon. Two subspecies are commonly recognized. the California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens Ridgway), and the Valley Quail (Lophortyx californica californica Shaw). The two forms are very similar in coloration and habits and, for the purpose of this study, no effort is made to distinguish the two.

The Mink Creek region is centered 14 miles northeast of Preston in Franklin County, Idaho (see Index Map, Figure 1). The area of this report comprises approximately 70 square miles. It is bounded on the north and south by parallels 42°17' and 42°11' North Latitude and on the east and west by meridians 111°37' and 111°49'. The easternmost part of the area is located in the Bear River Range and is part of the Cache National Forest.

The present investigation was also made with the object of preparing the vinylquinoxalines and studying their 1,4- addition reactions. The attempts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. However, sodium acetylide reacted with 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline to give a new compound which (from its analysis and properties) appears to be 2,3-bis(1-hydroxyethyl) quinoxaline . This new compound should be investigated further , as it may prove to be an intermediate in the preparation of vinylquinoxalines. The preparation of 2-methylquinoxaline has become very simple by the use of the method of Jones, Kornfeld and McLaughlin^5, which consists of condensing o-phenylenediamine with pyruvic aldehyde.
