The Chelation Of Cu(Ii) With 1, 3-Bis(Tris(Hydroxymethyl)Methylamino)-2-Propanol And 1, 3-Bis (2-Hydroxyethylamino)-2-Propanol, David Andrew Jackson Jr.

Master's Theses

The chelating agent 1, 3-bis(2-hydroxyethylamino)-2-propanol dihydrochloride was prepared and preliminary examinations of the Cu(ll) and Fe(lll) complexes were carried out spectrophotometrically. This dihydrochloride as well as 1, 3 bis(tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino)-2-propanol dihydrochloride. were converted from the chloride salts to their corresponding ammonium bases. The conversion was carried out by passing an aqueous solution of each chloride salt through an ion exchange column containing Amberlite XE-78 resin.

Solutions of these bases were standardized for use in potentiometric titration&. Each ammonium base was titrated with standard perchloric acid at 20°C, 30°C, and 40°C. The dissociation constants. were calculated using these data. Aqueous solutions of …

A Chromatographic Study Of The Polyphenols In Cured Tobacco, Marvin Dennis Edmonds Jan 1960

A Chromatographic Study Of The Polyphenols In Cured Tobacco, Marvin Dennis Edmonds

Master's Theses

The object of this project was to isolate, separate, and identify the polyphenols in tobacco. Following this, the aim was to develop a method for the quantitative determination of the major polyphenols in tobacco.

Existing methods for the determination of polyphenols in tobacco involve lengthy procedures which are concerned with one or two of the polyphenols rather than the· complete class of compounds. The methods consist of exhaustive extraction procedures, lengthy chromatographic procedures and numerous methods of identification.

Extensive research on the determination of polyphenols by chromatography has been carried out in the field of tobacco and in other fields. …

The Development Of Nickel Electrodeposits On Copper Monocrystals As Studied With The Electron Microscope, Lucille Burnett Garmon Jan 1960

The Development Of Nickel Electrodeposits On Copper Monocrystals As Studied With The Electron Microscope, Lucille Burnett Garmon

Master's Theses

Important theoretical and experimental developments in the field of electrocrystallization on single crystals are briefly reviewed and new data presented. The deposition of nickel from a Watts-type bath onto electrolytically polished mono crystals of copper is the system chosen for study. Various aspects of the structural changes in the deposit with increasing thickness are considered. The electron microscope is the main tool employed and the deposit is studied by detaching it from the basis metal as well as by the use of surface replicas. Short backgrounds in crystallography and electron microscopy are included.

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley Jan 1960

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley

Master's Theses

The normal spectral emittance at 0. 65 microns of elemental boron specimens was measured at incandescent temperatures by the hollow-tube method, This was made possible by depositing boron onto thin-walled hollow tubes of graphite and molybdenum. An approximate value of the total hemispherical emittance for boron was also obtained. The deposition of boron was accomplished by chemical vapor plating with boron tribromide and hydrogen. The boron produced was characterized in several ways.

Pike Hybrids (Esox Lucius X E. Vermiculatus) In A Sandhill Lake, Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

In the sandhill region of Nebraska both northern pike, Esox lucius, and grass pickerel, Esox vermiculatus, are abundant in several shallow natural lakes. Both species are known to utilize the same vegetative habitat for spawning during March and April. The pike is an important game species but the smaller pickerel is of little value to fishermen although in winter is at times taken by angling through the ice.

Upland Game Restoration Project, Melvin O. Steen, Willard R. Barbee, C. Phillip Agee, Clarence E. Newton

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

It is the objective of the project to stabilize the populations of various species of small, upland game to the extent that populations will be maintained at harvestable levels in periods when those populations tend to slump.

It is recognized that in Nebraska nearly all of the small, upland game is produced on private lands. Therefore, the project is designed to provide assistance to the landowners who may wish to improve the game habitat on their lands.

Comparative Petrographic, Petrochemical And Spectrographic Analyses Of The Precambrian Granitic Rocks Of Southeastern Missouri, Eva B. Kisvarsanyi

Masters Theses

"Petrographic, petrochemical and spectrographic studies were completed on selected Precambrian granitic rock samples from Southeastern Missouri. This investigation contributes to a more detailed knowledge of the Precambrian granitic rocks of this part of the state.

Petrographic analysis of forty-four thin sections of granitic rocks from the St. Francois Mountains area revealed six different granite types. These have been named the Fredericktown, Knoblick, Doerun, Graniteville, Klondike and Silvermine granites. These rocks form a large part of a composite batholith. More than one period of granitic intrusion is represented, but differentiation also contributed to the formation of this diversity of the rocks. …

Oxygen Permeability Of Free Paint Films, Janice I. Kellerman Jan 1960

Oxygen Permeability Of Free Paint Films, Janice I. Kellerman

Masters Theses

"As early as the mid 1800’s investigations were performed on the gas passage through rubber, but it is only comparatively recently that plastic polymeric materials have come into prominence. One interesting aspect of much experimentation begun was that of permeability, and it was soon evident that, in general, polymeric materials have extremely low permeability of gases. This is, in essence, the basis for use of plastics as packaging materials, balloons, and in many other designs and fabrications where it is desirous and/or necessary to exclude air.

There are several variables which must be taken into consideration in the evaluation of …

Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand Jan 1960

Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand

Masters Theses

"Presented herein is a brief analysis of the economic justification practices of the Corps of Engineers as commonly implemented in proposals concerning water resources projects. Where applicable, recommended methods are compared to similar methods advocated for, and accepted by, private engineering firms in similar situations.

The major problem exists in the lack of a profit motive in programs undertaken with the use of public funds. However, a profit can be said to have been realized in public works programs if the total benefits of the programs to all the people exceed the costs of these programs and, further, if the …

Mississippian Bioherms Of Southwestern Missouri And Northwestern Arkansas, Arthur R. Troell Jr. Jan 1960

Mississippian Bioherms Of Southwestern Missouri And Northwestern Arkansas, Arthur R. Troell Jr.

Masters Theses

"Lenticular bodies of massive limestone, flanked by thin crinoidal beds, crop out in southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. They are within the St. Joe limestone of the Lower Mississippian.

Strata underlying these bodies typically are down-warped, those on the flanks lapping against, finally passing completely over the limestone core. Dips away from the “reef” are commonly around 5 degrees, but reach as much as 30 degrees. Conglomeratic detritus, originating from the core, occurs in flanking beds at their contact with it.

Thin sections of these masses show no more than 15 per cent of the limestone to consist of fossil …

Wuellner in Analytical Chemistry, 24, 1031 (1952) for the gravimetric determination of barium by homogeneous precipitation with sulfamic acid, to determine the effects produced by slight modifications in procedure, and to investigate the feasibility of separating mixtures of barium and calcium by this method.

Commercial Vegetable Growing In The Perth Metropolitan Region, L T. Jones Jan 1960

Commercial Vegetable Growing In The Perth Metropolitan Region, L T. Jones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MARKET gardening with sprinkler irrigation on deep sandy soils around Perth is really a commercial application of hydroponics or sand culture principles.

Provision of a continuous and adequate supply of nitrogen is the major problem. Peat swamps scattered among the sandy areas have higher natural fertility. However, their common problems are drainage, acidity ("sourness"), salt and various special soil deficiencies. Over-liming of acid swamps can cause new problems.

The Dielectric Strength Of Some Anti-Corrosive Paints, John Harvey Gustafson Jan 1960

The Dielectric Strength Of Some Anti-Corrosive Paints, John Harvey Gustafson

Masters Theses

"Metals undergo chemical reaction with nonmetallic elements of their surroundings to produce compounds which are either oxides or salts. These corrosion products, as they are called, may accelerate, impede, or have no influence on the course of further corrosion. It is unfortunate that iron, the metal of greatest use to man, receives very little protection from its corrosion products. There are no easy or inexpensive means of prevention of this corrosion and at best the reactions can only be controlled. One method of control is the use of anti-corrosive paints. Their protection is produced by placing an inert, continuous, and …

Occurrence Of Mineralized Ground Water In Southern St. Louis And Jefferson Counties, Missouri, Willard Glennon Owens Jan 1960

Occurrence Of Mineralized Ground Water In Southern St. Louis And Jefferson Counties, Missouri, Willard Glennon Owens

Masters Theses

"Mineralized ground water occurs at some localities in southeastern St. Louis and northern Jefferson counties, Missouri. This water is usually undesirable and is detrimental to development of ground water resources.

Water well records in the offices of the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources provided data for a study of structure, lithology and occurrence of ground water. Water well drillers and property owners were interviewed to obtain additional information concerning drilling problems and quality of water.

Geologic cross-sections, subsurface contour maps and isochlorinity maps aided the study of lithology, structure and areal distribution of mineralized ground water. Relationship is suggested …

Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell Jan 1960

Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell

Theses and Dissertations

The Malad Valley is geographically located in a unique position in the Pacific Northwest. The Bear River and its main affluent, the Malad River, are the only rivers in the Pacific Northwest that drain into the Great Basin, whereas the other streams and rivers of the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon empty eventually into the Pacific Ocean. It is also characterized for being the northern end of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, and eventually it was through this valley that an outlet opened to drain the lake. The soil deposits from this lake left a fertile valley, capable of producing most …

Studies In The Mulga Pastoral Zone. 1. The Grazing Of Wandarrie Grass Associations, D G. Wilcox

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE establishment of the Wiluna office of the North-West Branch marked the commencement of a series of investigations into the pastures of the mulga zone.

Unlike the agricultural areas where a fund of knowledge exists on the growth habits of the pastures, the pastures of this area were completely unknown.

The preliminary investigations had to be aimed at forming an understanding of the reactions of the various plants to rain, to temperature and seasonal conditions and to grazing in an area of extremely low rainfall reliability.

A Movement West, Robert Katz Jan 1960

A Movement West, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

I did not discover that I had any interest in teaching or in academic life until late in my twenties, and then only through a sequence of unrelated circumstances.
I was born in 1917. My parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who came to New York City at about the turn of the century.
At sixteen I enrolled in Brooklyn College, a recently organized, tuition-free, municipal college, then housed in rented office buildings in downtown Brooklyn. It took an hour to get to or from school on the subway. I managed to choose this inconvenient location because this school seemed most likely …

Some Limnological Conditions Relative To Winter Kill Of Fish In Ice-Covered Representative Farm Ponds In Eastern South Dakota, Jerome L. Johnson Jan 1960

Some Limnological Conditions Relative To Winter Kill Of Fish In Ice-Covered Representative Farm Ponds In Eastern South Dakota, Jerome L. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An aquatic environment involves many complex relationships biologically, physically, and chemically. Many of these relationships are difficult to measure or are little understood. In nature, aquatic environments accommodate many types of aquatic life. Ecological disturbances may cause the environment to become unfit for economically important forms of life. Human interferences often causes polluted waters and naturally occurring disturbances are common. A disturbance of this kind is one of the major problems of fisheries management in the northern Great Plains area – seasonal anaerobosis of fish or other aquatic animals and plants, commonly known as winter kill. Winter kill is usually …

Comprehensive Survey Of Sedimentation In Lake Mead, 1948-49, W. O. Smith, C. P. Vetter, G. B. Cummings, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

Reservoirs are becoming an increasingly prominent feature of the American landscape. Built for flood mitigation and to change a fluctuating river into a dependable source of water for irrigation, power, and other purposes, they are predestined, like natural lakes, to be destroyed sometime following their creation. Sedimentation sooner or later robs most lakes and reservoirs of their capacity to store water. The significance of sedimentation in the life of Lake Mead, the largest artificial reservoir in the world, was realized when the plan for the reservoir was conceived, and an aerial survey of the floor was made in 1935 before …
