The Influence Of Temperature On The Impedance To Water Flow Through Plants, Royal Duane Jensen May 1961

The Influence Of Temperature On The Impedance To Water Flow Through Plants, Royal Duane Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This era has been termed the atomic or space age. The greatest concern of most people seems to be centered around survival from the destruction and suffering that might be caused by atomic and nuclear weapons. However, along with this, the world is confronted with perhaps a greater disaster--a potential calamity seldom realized by most people, yet a problem which grows more serious in the world each year--a tragedy which would probably be worse than destruction from nuclear weapons. This encroaching catastrophe is starvation.

Even today the majority of the people in the world do not have enough food. Each …

A Determination Of The Earth's Gravity Field In Spheroidal Coordinates, M. Spencer Hamilton Jr. May 1961

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The earth's gravity field G * at a point P in the region surrounding the earth's surface is defined as the force acting on a unit mass concentrated at P. This is a force resulting from two components: (1) G1 due to the gravitational attraction of the earth's mass, and (2) G2 due to the earth's rotation.

As a result of Newton's law of gravitation, G1 can be written in integral form as follows:

G1 = k ( (V ( rdm/r3

where r = PQ, r = |r|, Q is a point which ranges …

The Influence Of Soil Compaction Upon The Thermodynamics Of Soil Moisture, James E. Box Jr. May 1961

The Influence Of Soil Compaction Upon The Thermodynamics Of Soil Moisture, James E. Box Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The retention of water in soils is a very interesting subject. Soil-water research presents a great challenge to research workers. The challenge is broad in scope and extends from the field problems of large irrigation projects to the atomic scale of the solid-liquid interface.

If scientists are going to describe scientifically soil-water relations, they must ultimately utilize the instruments of science and the language of mathematics. To the end of the latter the mathematics of thermodynamics has been applied in these studies of water retention in soils.

Content, Sequence, And Emphasis Of Arithmetical Concepts As Presented In Six Textbooks And An Analysis Of Student Errors In Fifth Grade Arithmetic, Lorenzo Groutage May 1961

Content, Sequence, And Emphasis Of Arithmetical Concepts As Presented In Six Textbooks And An Analysis Of Student Errors In Fifth Grade Arithmetic, Lorenzo Groutage

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Arithmetic problems and the mastery of such problems play an important role in society as it exists today. The pressure from the public has been and is for better teaching of the basic skills. Public school teachers have often evaded this issue (2). For the past decade the emphasis has been "Why Johnny Can't Read," but it seems equally important, because of the relationship of reading and arithmetic, that the focus also center on the mathematical phase of education (8).

The geology of the southern part of the Bannock Range, however, has not been studied in detail, and it is the purpose of this investigation to map and describe the geology of the Weston Canyon area and to correlate it with previously described geology of …

Pfaffian Differential Expressions And Equations, K. Raman Unni May 1961

Pfaffian Differential Expressions And Equations, K. Raman Unni

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is needless to point out the necessity and the importance of the study of Pfaffian differential expressions and equations. While it is interesting to consider from the pure mathematical point of view, their applications in many branches of applied mathematics are well known. To mention a few, one may observe that they arise in connection with line integrals (example, determination of work). They provide a more rational formulation of the foundations of thermodynamics as developed by the Greek mathematician Caratheodory. They also arise in the problem of determining the orthogonal trajectories. In many branches of engineering and other physical …

The Effects Of Certain Environmental And Biological Factors On Rally Calling In The Chukar Partridge, H. Warrington Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Naturalists for many years have known that birds sing most at dawn and at dusk, but to which of many physical variables they are responding has not been completely determined. This problem has taken on importance in the field of wildlife management because calling rate has been used as an index of abundance for numerous game birds, namely the Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus (Kimball, 1949); the Mourning Dove, Zenaidura macroura (McClure, 1939); the Bobwhite Quail, Colinus virginianus (Bennitt, 1951; Rosene, 1957): and the Woodcock, Philohela minor (Pitelka, 1943).

Effect Of Anions On The Sodium Adsorption Capacity And Electrophoretic Mobility Of Sodium Saturated Utah Bentonite, Theron G. Sommerfeldt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sodium saturated Utah bentonite was equilibrated in several concentrations of various sodium salt solutions. The effect of anions on the amount of sodium adsorbed was determined. The effect of anions on the electrophoretic mobility of the clay was also studied. The results are reported herein.

Anions, are generally considered, in the field of surface chemistry, to have no influence on the amount of cations adsorbed or the electrophoretic mobility of negatively charged colloids (5, 10, 28, 41). There is evidence (2, 7, 24, 26, 27, 33) to indicate that anions sometimes have an appreciable effect. If anions influence the amount …

Thus equation (4) refers to the fourth equation of the same section as the reference, and equation (2.2) refers to the second equation of the second section.

Influence Of Compaction And Freezing On The Structure And Permeability Of Some Selected Horizons From Northern Utah Soils, Samir Ramzy Nagmoush May 1961

Influence Of Compaction And Freezing On The Structure And Permeability Of Some Selected Horizons From Northern Utah Soils, Samir Ramzy Nagmoush

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Frequently, in evaluating plant deficiencies, one considers only those soil factors which are associated with the fertility of the soil-- mainly the levels of phosphorus, potash, nitrogen, and organic matter. A certain level of nutrition is essential for plant growth, but in order for the nutrients to exert their maximum influence on the productivity of the soil, it is equally important that a good soil environment be provided and maintained. A good environment requires that good physical conditions of soil, sir, and water be in balance.

In the literature search, primary importance was given to the biological properties of thioureas. The objective of the experimental work was to prepare compounds having potential pharmacological activity and to determine the physical constants of these compounds.

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles Apr 1961

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles

Master's Theses

In experimental nuclear physics it is often desirable to detect neutrons in the presence of a heavy gemna-ray background. This situation presents a problem since neutron counters also respond to gamma radiation. However, recently it has been shown that the scintillation counter employing an organic crystal scintillator and pulse-shape discrimination may well furnish the solution to this problem.

Determination Of A Molecular Weight Distribution For Intermediate Degradation Products Of Bovine Plasma Albumin, Sherwin M. Beck Apr 1961

Determination Of A Molecular Weight Distribution For Intermediate Degradation Products Of Bovine Plasma Albumin, Sherwin M. Beck

Master's Theses

Within the last decade several important studies have been made on the large degradation of products of proteins. However, little work has been done on the intermediate degradation products. This study is concerned with the chromatographic separation of intermediate fragments from chrymotryptie hydrolysates of bovine plasma albumin and the determination of the molecular weights of the fragments. An automatic recording differential refractometer employing a differential cell of original design permitted the observation of chromatographic components as they were eluted f rom a column of Sephadex G-50. A fraction collector of original design collected 3 ml. fractions of the effluent. Three …

Extension Of The Range Of Northern Pike (Esox Lucius), D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Recent technical publications and popular literature have not fully established the present geographical range of the northern pike. A survey by the writer in 1955 showed that 26 states and Canadian provinces had resident northern pike populations. During the past 5 years pike have been introduced into several other states, thus extending the range. Pike are already established in most of the northern states and are now being released into waters of the south and west.
