Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly deployed in safety-critical applications such as logistics, surveillance, disaster response, and urban air mobility. While their autonomy enables powerful capabilities, it also introduces vulnerabilities due to hardware faults, software defects, communication failures, and adversarial interference. This survey presents a comprehensive review of research studies closely related to UAV anomalies published between 2015 and 2025, covering 111 papers from academic and industrial sources. We introduce a unified five-pillar taxonomy—anomaly generation, prevention, detection, recovery, and analysis—that organizes existing work across the full anomaly management lifecycle. In contrast to prior surveys that focus primarily on detection algorithms, …

Accountable Agents In Software Engineering: An Analysis Of Terms Of Service And A Research Roadmap, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
AI coding assistants and autonomous agents are becoming integral to software development workflows, reshaping how code is produced, reviewed, and maintained. While recent research has focused mainly on the capabilities and impacts of productivity of these systems, much less attention has been paid to accountability: who is responsible when agents generate, modify, or recommend code? In practice, accountability is defined through the Terms of Service (ToS) and related policy documents that govern the use of AI-powered development tools. In this vision paper, we present a comparative analysis of the Terms of Service for widely used AI coding assistants and agent-enabled development …

Rapid advances in AI-generated image (AIGI) technology enable highly realistic synthesis, threatening public information integrity and security. Recent studies have demonstrated that incorporating texture-level artifact features alongside semantic features into multimodal large language models (MLLMs) can enhance their AIGI detection capability. However, our preliminary analyses reveal that artifact features exhibit high intra-feature similarity, leading to an almost uniform attention map after the softmax operation. This phenomenon causes attention dilution, thereby hindering effective fusion between semantic and artifact features. To overcome this limitation, we propose a lightweight fusion adapter, TranX-Adapter, which integrates a Task-aware Optimal-Transport Fusion that leverages the Jensen-Shannon divergence …

Multimodal representation learning aims to construct a shared embedding space in which heterogeneous modalities are semantically aligned. Despite strong empirical results, InfoNCE-based objectives introduce inherent conflicts that yield distribution gaps across modalities. In this work, we identify two conflicts in the multimodal regime, both exacerbated as the number of modalities increases: (i) an alignment–uniformity conflict, whereby the repulsion of uniformity undermines pairwise alignment, and (ii) an intra-alignment conflict, where aligning multiple modalities induces competing alignment directions. To address these issues, we propose a principled decoupling of alignment and uniformity for multimodal representations, providing a conflict-free recipe for multimodal learning that …

The widespread availability of large-scale code datasets has accelerated the development of code large language models (CodeLLMs), raising concerns about unauthorized dataset usage. Dataset poisoning offers a proactive defense by reducing the utility of such unauthorized training. However, existing poisoning methods often require full-dataset poisoning and introduce transformations that break code compilability. In this paper, we introduce FunPoison, a functionality-preserving poisoning approach that injects short, compilable weak-use fragments into executed code paths. FunPoison leverages reusable statement-level templates with automatic repair and conservative safety checking to ensure side-effect freedom, while a type-aware synthesis module preserves type correctness, suppresses static-analysis warnings, and …

Knowledge-State Generative Agents For Pre-Assessment Question Evaluation, Ping Fan Ke, Yi Meng Lau, Siaw Ling Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper introduces a Knowledge‑State Generative Agent framework for evaluating the quality of pre‑assessment questions. The framework employs large language model (LLM)–based agents prompted to adopt a teacher persona to simulate the responses of students with and without mastery of targeted knowledge components. A preliminary empirical study using archival data from 424 students enrolled in an Information Systems Management course indicates that the proposed approach yields interpretable metrics under Classical Test Theory. Results further show that agents instantiated with the relevant mastered knowledge components exhibit systematically higher performance than agents lacking such mastery. In addition, the study suggests that teacher-persona …

Scattered Hypothesis Generation For Open-Ended Event Forecasting, He Chang, Zhulin Tao, Lifang Yang, Xianglin Huang, Yunshan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite the importance of open-ended event forecasting for risk management, current LLM-based methods predominantly target only the most probable outcomes, neglecting the intrinsic uncertainty of real-world events. To bridge this gap, we advance open-ended event forecasting from pinpoint forecasting to scatter forecasting by introducing the proxy task of hypothesis generation. This paradigm aims to generate an inclusive and diverse set of hypotheses that broadly cover the space of plausible future events. To this end, we propose SCATTER, a reinforcement learning framework that jointly optimizes inclusiveness and diversity of the hypothesis. Specifically, we design a novel hybrid reward that consists of …

Mab-Dqa: Addressing Query Aspect Importance In Document Question Answering With Multi-Armed Bandits, Yixin Xiang, Yunshan Ma, Xiaoyu Du, Yibing Chen, Yanxin Zhang, Jinhui Tang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Document Question Answering (DQA) involves generating answers from a document based on a user’s query, representing a key task in document understanding. This task requires interpreting visual layouts, which has prompted recent studies to adopt multimodal Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) that processes page images for answer generation. However, in multimodal RAG, visual DQA struggles to utilize a large number of images effectively, as the retrieval stage often retains only a few candidate pages (e.g., Top-4), causing informative but less visually salient content to be overlooked in favor of common yet low-information pages. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-Armed Bandit–based …

Android applications (i.e., apps) are indispensable nowadays and are getting bigger and bigger with an increasing number offunctionalities. To understand how to access functionalities in an app, prior studies proposed tools to model the transitionsbetween functionalities with the activity transition graph (ATG). ATG is an important data structure and has been used forvarious Android app analyses, including app design, understanding, and testing. However, there is no benchmarking work onATG generation. It is still unclear whether the transitions identified by tools are correct and how many transitions are missed. To fill this gap, we manually identified all transitions in 98 applications to …

Bundle recommendation seeks to recommend a bundle of related items to users to improve both userexperience and the profits of platform. Existing bundle recommendation models have progressed from capturing only user-bundle interactions to the modeling of multiple relations among users, bundles, and items.CrossCBR, in particular, incorporates cross-view contrastive learning into a two-view preference learningframework, significantly improving SOTA performance. It does, however, have two limitations: (1) the twoview formulation does not fully exploit all the heterogeneous relations among users, bundles, and items; and(2) the “early contrast and late fusion” framework is less effective in capturing user preference and difficultto generalize to …

Improved Pbs Algorithm For Multi-Agent Path Planning Based On Conflict Guidance And Punishment Mechanism, Jinbao Zhang, Jianlin Mao, Chengze Qian, Guimi Sun, Kaixin Tong
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To address the bottleneck in which the priority-based search (priority-based search, PBS) algorithm for multi-agent path planning easily falls into conflict loops and generates invalid node expansions in complex scenarios, an improved algorithm based on conflict guidance and a punishment mechanism (improved PBS multi-agent path finding algorithm based on conflict guidance and punishment mechanism, CGP-PBS) was proposed. A conflict-guided node expansion mechanism was constructed; in high-level search, it comprehensively evaluated path cost and the number of conflicts, preferentially expanded child nodes with high potential for conflict resolution, and delayed the expansion of high-conflict nodes, thereby effectively compressing the search …

Despite substantial excitement around the use of AI in law, little information exists on the performance and associated risks of the domain’s widely marketed tools. Recent work, for instance, has demonstrated the significant potential for “hallucinations” — wherein models make up facts, law, and precedent — leading Chief Justice Roberts to spotlight this risk in his annual report on the judiciary. We argue that there is a need for public AI benchmarking in law. First, relative to other AI application domains, the legal AI ecosystem lacks legibility — there is little information about the design and performance of many commercial …
Enhancing Deep Learning Image Reconstruction In Breast Ct With Task-Driven Training And Physics-Informed Models, Megan Ariel Murphy
Enhancing Deep Learning Image Reconstruction In Breast Ct With Task-Driven Training And Physics-Informed Models, Megan Ariel Murphy
Dissertations (1934 -)
Dedicated breast X-ray computed tomography (breast CT) is a developing imaging modality that has potential as an alternative to mammography. Unlike traditional mammography, breast CT offers high-resolution, fully 3D anatomical detail, which aids in the detection of microcalfications and subtle lesions that are potential indicators of cancer. To be effective for screening, breast CT must limit radiation exposure by reducing CT view angles. However, traditional image reconstruction methods yield noisy, artifacted images in this sparse-view CT setting. This dissertation develops image restoration and reconstruction methods that address these limitations by integrating physics-informed iterative methods with machine learning tools, and a …

The herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) US3 is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase that promotes HSV-1 replication and spread. But its role and the mechanisms by which US3 regulates actin cytoskeletal remodeling remain poorly defined. We combined flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry (IP-MS), protein complex mapping, and machine learning to characterize US3-mediated F-actin dynamics. Flow cytometry and confocal microscopy showed that wild-type HSV-1 induces significant F-actin remodeling, while the ΔUS3 mutant displays F-actin levels comparable to uninfected cells, identifying US3 as a key regulator. IP-MS identified 47 high-confidence US3 interactors enriched in conserved actin regulatory complexes, including Arp2/3 nucleation machinery, …

Existence And Uniqueness Of Positive Solutions For Hilfer–Hadamard-Type Fractional Differential Equations With Γ-Concave And Sub-Homogeneous Operators, Hasan Rasouli, Hojjat Afshari, Martin Bohner
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this research, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions for a class of Hilfer–Hadamard-type fractional differential equations with boundary value problems, including those with integral boundary conditions. The obtained results are conditional on a specific set of strong assumptions, which substantially narrow the class of admissible nonlinearities, coefficients, and boundary data. Thus, the present work extends the Hadamard-type framework to the Hilfer–Hadamard setting only within this restrictive regime, rather than providing a full extension to all Hilfer–Hadamard systems. We utilize the properties of (Formula presented.) -concave and sub-homogeneous operators along with two …

Fog computing extends cloud services to the network edge, enabling low-latency processing for time-sensitive applications. However, scheduling complexity significantly increases due to heterogeneous resources, dynamic workloads, and strict Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints. Although numerous scheduling techniques have been proposed, existing studies often assess only a narrow subset of algorithms or rely on offline metaheuristics unsuitable for real-time environments. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative evaluation of twelve scheduling algorithms, including five classical, one heuristic, and six metaheuristic-inspired approaches, within a realistic 20-node multi-tier fog-cloud topology. Across 1,365 experiments spanning seven utilization levels, we analyze each algorithm’s deadline adherence, load distribution, and …

Farm workers are particularly vulnerable to climate change, especially from extreme heat; however, little is known about how they perceive this risk. This study examines climate change perceptions (CCP) among 404 farm workers surveyed in person in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas from April to May 2024. Guided by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice, we conducted a latent class analysis of economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital indicators to identify distinct class profiles. We then assessed CCP by latent profile, using two primary outcome variables: (1) perceived temperature trends in the region (assessed alongside NOAA data) and (2) perceived …

An Emergent Seafood Nationalism Takes Hold In The United States, Owen Temby
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper introduces the concept of ‘seafood nationalism’ to describe how, since 2024–2025, the United States increasingly uses tariffs, trade remedies, food safety enforcement and origin-based rules to favour American seafood over foreign products. Federal actions include Executive Order 14276, Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness, which directs agencies to address unfair trade practices, unsafe imports and to develop a coordinated seafood trade strategy. Additional measures include a tariff package imposing a 10% duty on nearly all seafood imports and 30% on seafood from China, as well as new anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders on warm-water shrimp. This paper presents Gulf …

Does Poor Regulation Lead To Pollution? Key Takeaways From A Systematic Review, Vincent Emenyonu, Kat O. Mara, Mark Lund
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Formal recycling of used lead acid batteries (ULAB) is a multibillion-dollar industry, valued at US$12.12 billion in 2024, and expected to grow to more than $26 billion within eight years. Demand for recycled lead (Pb) for new batteries grows in developing countries where costs limit the uptake of lithium-ion batteries. ULAB recycling in these regions poses significant danger to human health and the environment. Stringent regulatory approaches for ULAB recycling in developing countries, intended to reduce pollution, have thus far been ineffective as they typically do not adequately cover small-scale informal recycling in rural and remote communities. We examine what …

Semantic Context Improvisational Retrieval-Augmented Generation For Empathic Conversational Ai, Sharjeel Tahir, Judith Johnson, Jumana Abu-Khalaf, Syed Afaq Ali Shah
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A fundamental limitation of modern conversational AI is its limited capacity to demonstrate sustained empathy in long-form interactions. We propose SCIRAG (Semantic Context Improvisational Retrieval-Augmented Generation), a feedback-driven retrieval framework for adaptive empathic dialogue. It employs a dual-loop retrieval framework, iteratively optimizing a static counseling dataset through user metadata and feedback memory refinement. To enhance contextual alignment, we deploy retrieval adaptation, enabling the model to retain and leverage past conversational cues based on user preferences. When integrated with Mixtral-8x7B, SCIRAG improves human-rated empathic understanding by +1.26 points and empathic response by +1.00 point on the RoPE scale, while increasing acceptability …

We develop a surfactant-free synthesis method for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using 2-propynylamine-functionalized silicon nanoparticles as integrated redox-active supports. Surface-anchored amine groups act as built-in reducing sites for Au3+ precursors at the hexane–water interface under ambient conditions, enabling in situ AuNP nucleation and growth. Time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering track the emergence of plasmonic AuNPs, while quantitative morphology analysis reveals a final population dominated by spherical and near-spherical nanoparticles (∼74%), with faceted polyhedral structures (∼4%) and dendritic, hollow, irregular, and rod-like morphologies (∼22%) as minority species. The temporal evolution proceeds from early dendritic and irregular aggregates to a …

Cosmic Chirps: Studies In The Evolution And Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Compact Binary Systems, Calla Irene Bassett Bigg
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will go over three projects that have to do with gravitational wave mechanics and history. The first project is about investigating computationally cheaper approximation methods for modeling EMRI (extreme mass ratio inspiral) orbits using interpolation. Two codes are interpolated together for full coverage of the parameter space. This interpolation has yet to be tested for accuracy but the preliminary outlook is positive. This may well be a useful tool for studying EMRIs. The second project is investigating the origins of the term “chirp mass”, where chirp mass is a combination of the two masses in a binary that …
Beyond Semantic Matching: Integrating Graph Structures, Boolean Logic, And Interactive Aggregation In Modern Retrieval, Quan Mai
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR) systems have achieved remarkable success in semantic understanding; however, they continue to struggle with complex logical reasoning, structural interactions, and dynamic aggregation. This dissertation presents a comprehensive framework to enhance the structural, logical, and interactive capabilities of language models and retrieval systems across four progressive studies. First, we address the challenge of modeling dynamic conversational logic in online debates. We introduce a Sequence Graph Network (SGN) that captures the temporal and interactive exchange of ideas—such as counterarguments and reinforcements—by updating node features sequentially through a novel Sequence Graph Attention (SGA) layer. …
Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery
Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Ozark Highlands is an ecoregion in the mid-southern portion of the United States that is characterized by a mosaic of tallgrass prairies, oak (Quercus spp.) savannas, and oak-hickory (Carya spp.) forests, which represents a unique biophysical transition zone between the relatively dry grasslands of the west and the humid forests of the southeast. Quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), from natural, undisturbed ecosystems is critical to understanding atmospheric warming and climate-change implications. The objective of this study was to simultaneously evaluate CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions in an aquic and …

Matching The Stars To A Game Of Aggression, E. Chambers, Kristen Barnard
Electronic Proceedings of Undergraduate Mathematics Day
Region against region and army against army, we chart and battle among the stars! This paper studies the combinatorial game Aggression using graph-theoretic models. We focus on how winning strategies depend on the structure of the game graph, with particular attention to star graphs, matchings, and their disjoint union. The results presented here come from research conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kristen Barnard during the summer of 2025. We begin by introducing the game, describing the rule set used, and explaining how maps can be represented as graphs. From there, we examine how adjacency, placement order, and tie-breaking rules …

Electronic Proceedings of Undergraduate Mathematics Day
In this note, we introduce a method called Strict Steiner Symmetrization (see Section 2.2) that is an altered form of Steiner Symmetrization that fixes the number of vertices. The context of this paper will be to prove the Isoperimetric Inequality in R2 via approximation by polygons. Specifically, to establish that among all n-gon domains in the plane, the regular m-gon, m ≥ n, uniquely minimizes the isoperimetric ratio and that the limit of this regular polygon (that is the circle) achieves equality in the isoperimetric inequality. This note is an extracted portion of my junior thesis (A Polygonal Proof of …

Predator-Prey Dynamics: Exploration And Logistic Extension Of The Lotka-Volterra System, Amanda Maylath, Samuel Brensinger
Electronic Proceedings of Undergraduate Mathematics Day
The Lotka-Volterra system is a classic model of predator–prey interactions, capturing the interdependent growth and decline of two species. Using a dynamical systems approach, we identify fixed points, linearize the system via the Jacobian, and analyze phase space trajectories to determine stability and long-term behavior. This analysis provides insight into predator-prey dynamics without requiring explicit solutions. We further extend the model by incorporating a carrying capacity for the prey, reflecting more realistic population dynamics.
Huffman Tree Uniqueness, Elijah Diller, Adam Volk
Huffman Tree Uniqueness, Elijah Diller, Adam Volk
Electronic Proceedings of Undergraduate Mathematics Day
The Huffman algorithm is a standard algorithm used to generate an optimized binary encoding of a string. Using this algorithm, it may be possible to come up with more than one possible optimized binary encoding for a given string, so the following question arises: what strings have a unique optimized binary encoding? By unique encoding, we mean a unique vertex-labeled binary tree resulting from the Huffman algorithm. We do not worry about edge labels as every binary tree corresponding to a string with n distinct characters has 2n−1 ways of assigning the edge labels and determining the code. This investigation …
