The History Of Chinese Cybersecurity: Current Effects On Chinese Society Economy, And Foreign Relations, Vaughn C. Rogers
The History Of Chinese Cybersecurity: Current Effects On Chinese Society Economy, And Foreign Relations, Vaughn C. Rogers
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Chinese cybersecurity has become an infamous topic in the field of cybersecurity today, causing a great deal of controversy. The controversy stems from whether or not censorship is hindering Chinese economy, society, and relationships with other countries. The White Papers (中国政府白皮书), the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China (中华人民共和国宪法), and The Internet in China (中国互联网状况) all suggest that there is a free flow of Internet both within and without China that promotes peaceful socioeconomic development which the Chinese government seeks to promote. But is China sacrificing lucrative business prospects to secure …
A Chemical Sensor For Cyanide, Rachel E. Lambert
A Chemical Sensor For Cyanide, Rachel E. Lambert
Honors Theses
The cyanide ion and its gaseous form, hydrogen cyanide, are extremely toxic. Cyanide impairs cellular respiration by inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the electron transport chain, leading to cell death.
In a previous study, we synthesized an optical sensor that detects cyanide selectively. The aim of this project is to increase the sensitivity of this sensor. This can be achieved by utilizing the unique spectroscopic properties of lanthanide ions.
The lanthanide metal (europium or terbium) was added to a coumarin-glycine chemodosimeter in a DMSO solvent system. The sensor was titrated with several monodentate analytes including, nitrate, octylamine, 1-pentanethiol, …
Transcending Academic Borders: A Defense Of Collaboration Between Art And Science, Laura Borkenhagen
Transcending Academic Borders: A Defense Of Collaboration Between Art And Science, Laura Borkenhagen
Honors Capstone Projects
The aim of this project in its entirety was to explore different ideas about what the intersection of art and science might look like. These ideas, including my own, are presented in the following essay. In addition to the essay portion of this project, I’ve explored creative writing through poetry in attempts to immerse myself in both sides of this debate, as my academic history leans more towards the scientific realm. In the poems I’ve also tried to include bits of science through metaphorical language. The four works I have chosen to include follow the essay.

Identifying Terrorist Affiliations Through Social Network Analysis Using Data Mining Techniques, Govand A. Ali
Identifying Terrorist Affiliations Through Social Network Analysis Using Data Mining Techniques, Govand A. Ali
Information Technology Master Theses
In a technologically enabled world, local ideologically inspired warfare becomes global all too quickly, specifically terrorist groups like Al Quaeda and ISIS (Daesh) have successfully used modern computing technology and social networking environments to broadcast their message, recruit new members, and plot attacks. This is especially true for such platforms as Twitter and encrypted mobile apps like Telegram or the clandestine Alrawi. As early detection of such activity is crucial to attack prevention data mining techniques have become increasingly important in the fight against the spread of global terrorist activity. This study employs data mining tools to mine Twitter for …

Selective-Area Growth Of Heavily N–Doped Gaas Nanostubs On Si(001) By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Yoon Jung Chang, Paul J. Simmonds, Brett Beekley, Mark S. Goorsky, Jason C.S. Woo
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using an aspect ratio trapping technique, we demonstrate molecular beam epitaxy of GaAs nanostubs on Si(001) substrates. Nanoholes in a SiO2 mask act as a template for GaAs-on-Si selective-area growth(SAG) of nanostubs 120 nm tall and ≤100 nm in diameter. We investigate the influence of growthparameters including substrate temperature and growth rate on SAG. Optimizing these parameters results in complete selectivity with GaAsgrowth only on the exposed Si(001). Due to the confined-geometry, strain and defects in the GaAs nanostubs are restricted in lateral dimensions, and surface energy is further minimized. We assess the electrical properties of the selectively grownGaAs …
Mathematical Models For Infectious Disease Transmission With Stochastic Simulation Of Measles Outbreaks, Valerie Welty
Mathematical Models For Infectious Disease Transmission With Stochastic Simulation Of Measles Outbreaks, Valerie Welty
Honors College Theses
As they are the leading cause of death among children and adolescents worldwide, it is of extreme importance to control the spread of infectious diseases. Information gained from mathematical modeling of these events often proves quite useful in establishing policy decisions to accomplish this goal. Human behavior, however, is quite difficult to recreate when using equations with pre-determined results, such as deterministic differential equations often used with epidemic models. Because of this, the focus of the research was to create a simulation of an outbreak, specifically of measles, by using an imaginary population experiencing simulated stochastic events on a discrete …

A Framework To Manage Sensitive Information During Its Migration Between Software Platforms, Olusegun Ademolu Ajigini, John Andrew Van Der Poll, Jan H. Kroeze Phd
The African Journal of Information Systems
Software migrations are mostly performed by organisations using migration teams. Such migration teams need to be aware of how sensitive information ought to be handled and protected during the implementation of the migration projects. There is a need to ensure that sensitive information is identified, classified and protected during the migration process.
This paper suggests how sensitive information in organisations can be handled and protected during migrations, by using the migration from proprietary software to open source software to develop a management framework that can be used to manage such a migration process. The research employed a sequential explanatory mixed …
An Old And New Start To Russian—United States Nuclear Arms Control Agreements, Samantha Pitz
An Old And New Start To Russian—United States Nuclear Arms Control Agreements, Samantha Pitz
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Russian Federation and the United States of America signed on April 8, 2010 the New START nuclear arms control treaty. The New START treaty replaced the lackluster SORT treaty in order to establish a nuclear agreement that would put new limits on numbers of weapons and delivery vehicles while also establishing an innovative framework for transparency and data transfer to allow confidence building between two countries that have not always seen eye-to-eye. Through academic analysis, treaty text, and four formal interviews, the context and trajectory of Russian-United States’ arms control treaties has formed to portray New START as a …
Factoring Attitudes Towards Conflict Risk Into Selection Of Protected Areas For Conservation, Edd Hammill, A. I. Tulloch, H. P. Possingham, N. Strange, K. A. Wilson
Factoring Attitudes Towards Conflict Risk Into Selection Of Protected Areas For Conservation, Edd Hammill, A. I. Tulloch, H. P. Possingham, N. Strange, K. A. Wilson
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
The high incidence of armed conflicts in biodiverse regions poses significant challenges in achieving international conservation targets. Because attitudes towards risk vary, we assessed different strategies for protected area planning that reflected alternative attitudes towards the risk of armed conflicts. We find that ignoring conflict risk will deliver the lowest return on investment. Opting to completely avoid conflict-prone areas offers limited improvements and could lead to species receiving no protection. Accounting for conflict by protecting additional areas to offset the impacts of armed conflicts would not only increase the return on investment (an effect that is enhanced when high-risk areas …
A Logistic Regression And Markov Chain Model For The Prediction Of Nation-State Violent Conflicts And Transitions, Nicholas Shallcross
A Logistic Regression And Markov Chain Model For The Prediction Of Nation-State Violent Conflicts And Transitions, Nicholas Shallcross
Theses and Dissertations
Using open source data, this research formulates and constructs a suite of statistical models that predict future transitions into and out of violent conflict and forecasts the regional and global incidences of violent conflict over a ten-year time horizon. A total of thirty predictor variables are tested and evaluated for inclusion in twelve conditional logistic regression models, which calculate the probability that a nation will transition from its current conflict state, either In Conflict or Not in Conflict, to a new state in the following year. These probabilities are then used to construct a series of nation-specific Markov chain models …

Four career fields are considered, including Acquisitions (ACQ), Logistics (LOG), Support (SPT), …
Capturing Atmospheric Effects On 3-D Millimeter Wave Radar Propagation Patterns, Richard D. Cook
Capturing Atmospheric Effects On 3-D Millimeter Wave Radar Propagation Patterns, Richard D. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
The need to model millimeter wave (MMW) radar propagation is imperative to proper design of aeronautical, civil, and military systems. Traditional radar propagation modeling is done using a path transmittance with little to no input for weather and atmospheric conditions. As radar advances into the MMW regime, atmospheric effects, such as attenuation and refraction, become more pronounced than at traditional radar wavelengths. The DoD High Energy Laser Joint Technology Offices High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS), in combination with the Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) code, is a powerful tool for simulating laser propagation and effects tied …
Cyberspace And Organizational Structure: An Analysis Of The Critical Infrastructure Environment, Michael D. Quigg Ii
Cyberspace And Organizational Structure: An Analysis Of The Critical Infrastructure Environment, Michael D. Quigg Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Now more than ever, organizations are being created to protect the cyberspace environment. The capability of cyber organizations tasked to defend critical infrastructure has been called into question by numerous cybersecurity experts. Organizational theory states that organizations should be constructed to fit their operating environment properly. Little research in this area links existing organizational theory to cyber organizational structure. Because of the cyberspace connection to critical infrastructure assets, the factors that influence the structure of cyber organizations designed to protect these assets warrant analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
This thesis analyzes the cyber‐connected critical infrastructure environment using the dominant …
Deception In Game Theory: A Survey And Multiobjective Model, Austin L. Davis
Deception In Game Theory: A Survey And Multiobjective Model, Austin L. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Game theory is the study of mathematical models of conflict. It provides tools for analyzing dynamic interactions between multiple agents and (in some cases) across multiple interactions. This thesis contains two scholarly articles. The first article is a survey of game-theoretic models of deception. The survey describes the ways researchers use game theory to measure the practicality of deception, model the mechanisms for performing deception, analyze the outcomes of deception, and respond to, or mitigate the effects of deception. The survey highlights several gaps in the literature. One important gap concerns the benefit-cost-risk trade-off made during deception planning. To address …
A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim
A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, industrial and terrorist use of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) materials pose a risk to public safety. During the initial phase of typical CBRN incidents, emergency responders establish hazard zones based on standard distances from published guidelines and recommendations. This research investigates how standard hazard zones change in a real world environment that accounts for physical boundaries. Using a python simulation in ArcGIS®, new hazard zones were created by expanding standard hazard zones to follow nearby roads, railroads, and rivers. The new and standard zones were compared by calculating the population and area affected by …
Position And Volume Estimation Of Atmospheric Nuclear Detonations From Video Reconstruction, Daniel T. Schmitt
Position And Volume Estimation Of Atmospheric Nuclear Detonations From Video Reconstruction, Daniel T. Schmitt
Theses and Dissertations
Recent work in digitizing films of foundational atmospheric nuclear detonations from the 1950s provides an opportunity to perform deeper analysis on these historical tests. This work leverages multi-view geometry and computer vision techniques to provide an automated means to perform three-dimensional analysis of the blasts for several points in time. The accomplishment of this requires careful alignment of the films in time, detection of features in the images, matching of features, and multi-view reconstruction. Sub-explosion features can be detected with a 67% hit rate and 22% false alarm rate. Hotspot features can be detected with a 71.95% hit rate, 86.03% …
Teaching Critical Media Literacy Through Videogame Creation In Scratch Programming, Elizabeth Anne Gregg
Teaching Critical Media Literacy Through Videogame Creation In Scratch Programming, Elizabeth Anne Gregg
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Critical media literacy (Kellner & Share, 2005) may better equip children to interpret videogame content and to create games that are nonviolent and socially just. Videogames are growing in popularity in classrooms. Yet educators and parents have concerns about the violent and stereotypical content they include. An earlier study based on the curriculum Beyond Blame: Challenging Violence in the Media (Webb, Martin, Afifi, & Kraus, 2009) examined the value of a media awareness curriculum. In this mixed-method study, I explored the effectiveness of a critical media literacy program that incorporated collaboratively creating nonviolent or sociallyjust games in teaching fourth-grade students …
Ultrasonic Data Steganography, Alexander Orosz Edwards
Ultrasonic Data Steganography, Alexander Orosz Edwards
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
What started off as a question on the possibly of data transmission via sound above the level of human hearing evolved into a project exploring the possibility of ultrasonic data infiltration and exfiltration in an information security context. It is well known that sound can be used to transmit data as this can be seen in many old technologies, most notably and simply DTMF tones for phone networks. But what if the sound used to transmit signals was in in the ultrasonic range? It would go generally unnoticed to anyone not looking for it with tools such as a spectrum …
Thermal Neutron Analysis For Improvised Explosive Device Detection, Matthew David Marziale
Thermal Neutron Analysis For Improvised Explosive Device Detection, Matthew David Marziale
Open Access Dissertations
In this dissertation, the design of a system to detect improvised explosive devices is considered. The technique utilized is thermal neutron analysis. In this method, thermal neutrons are used to interrogate a volume for the presence of nitrogen, which is used as an indicator of explosive, given its unusual high energy line in the gamma ray spectrum generated by thermal capture reactions on explosive material. The performance of the system is then considered for a number of devices used to represent an improvised explosive device, including a 155 mm shell, an antitank mine, and a air to surface bomb. The …
Understanding Effects Of Autonomous Agent Timing On Human-Agent Teams Using Iterative Modeling, Simulation And Human-In-The-Loop Experimentation, Tyler J. Goodman
Understanding Effects Of Autonomous Agent Timing On Human-Agent Teams Using Iterative Modeling, Simulation And Human-In-The-Loop Experimentation, Tyler J. Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
Recent U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory strategy documents have suggested the need for research in human-agent teaming. Teaming supports a dynamic shift in roles between the human and the agent, depending upon human performance and mission needs. Further, because the performance of these agents will be highly dependent upon the state of the human and the mission, this strategy suggests the need for increased use of modeling to provide a broader understanding of the automated agent’s behavior. This thesis applies a combination of static modeling in SysML activity diagrams, dynamic modeling of human and agent behavior in IMPRINT, and human …

The use of computer forensics is important for forensic accounting practice because most accounting information is in digital forms today. The access to evidence is increasingly more complex and in far greater volumes than in previous decades. The effective and efficient means of detecting fraud are required for the public to maintain their confidence in the reliability of accounting audit and the reputation of accounting firms. The software tools used by forensic accounting can be called into question. Many appear inadequate when faced with the complexity of fraud and there needs to be the development of automated and specialist problem-solving …
The Unforeseen Evolution Of Technology, Dylan White
The Unforeseen Evolution Of Technology, Dylan White
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Technology has evolved in the past two decades to alter how countries and their people live in the present day. Said technology has also both solved and created new problems for world powers (i.e. the U.S. and China) to face. Issues of cyber security and cyber surveillance are already potential problems that need to be addressed, where topics like cyber warfare need to be closely monitored with time. All of these are potentially underestimated threats to civil liberties, and to countries in their entirety.
I agree with the findings in my project… • The United States is a model to …
Energy Sustainability Of Turkey In The Case Of Lng, Omer Ilker Poyraz, Omer Keskin, Resit Unal
Energy Sustainability Of Turkey In The Case Of Lng, Omer Ilker Poyraz, Omer Keskin, Resit Unal
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Energy is both vital and strategic element for a nation to sustain its fundamental activities like security, logistics, heating, etc. Countries sustain their energy demands through internal or external sources. In the case of not being able to maintain energy demands from their internal sources, they would need to import their requirements. Whenever they need to buy raw materials, they have to build terminals to process the raw material into the required form. The dependency on the imports may cause the importing country to weaken its advantage in international conflicts, unemployment, and welfare. Therefore, countries aim to mitigate dependence to …

The Numerical Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation For The Bloodcell Shape: Mars Project, Jill Kelly Resh
The Numerical Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation For The Bloodcell Shape: Mars Project, Jill Kelly Resh
Mathematics Theses
The objective of this research is to investigate numerical solutions of several boundary value problems for the Helmholtz equation for the shape of a Biconcave Disk. The boundary value problems this research mainly focuses on are the Neumann and Robin boundary problems. The Biconcave Disk is a closed, simply connected, bounded shape modi ed from a sphere where the two sides concave toward the center, mapped by a sine curve. There are some numerical issues in this type of analysis; any integration is a ected by the wave number k, because of the oscillatory behavior of the fundamental solution of …
A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank
A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Genetic analysis of maternally-inherited mitochondrial DNA and the paternally-inherited Y-chromosome yield contrasting pictures of movement of peoples into the Pacific Islands. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is a matrilocal residency pattern practiced by early Pacific settlers, in which Melanesian men were brought into settler communities to intermarry with local women, yielding a higher intrapopulation variance and lower interpopulation variance exhibited in males compared to females. This research investigates the possibility of sex-differential migration in the Oceanic populations of Easter Island, Fiji, Guam, Mokapu, and New Britain through analysis of biodistance based on dental morphological trait frequencies and craniometric measures …
