Ethical Analytics: A Framework For A Practically-Oriented Sub-Discipline Of Ai Ethics, Jonathan Boardman
Ethical Analytics: A Framework For A Practically-Oriented Sub-Discipline Of Ai Ethics, Jonathan Boardman
Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations
Ethics can no longer be regarded as an add-on in data science and analytics. This dissertation argues for the necessity of formalizing a new, practically-oriented sub-discipline of AI Ethics by outlining needs, highlighting shortcomings in current approaches, and providing a framework for Ethical Analytics, a field concerned with the study of the ethical issues surrounding the development, deployment, and/or dissemination of ML/AI systems and data science research, as well as the development of tools and procedures to mitigate ethical harms. While data science and machine learning are primarily concerned with data from start to finish, ethical analytics is concerned primarily …

A New Wave Of “Space Nationalism” In The United States: Why Are Evangelicals Good With It?, Andrea Molle
A New Wave Of “Space Nationalism” In The United States: Why Are Evangelicals Good With It?, Andrea Molle
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
Despite evidence that shows how the support for space programs correlates with liberal political views and a lower level of religiosity, recent data suggest that more conservative positions may have an even more substantial effect under the appropriate conditions. Using the available data from Pew's American Trends Panel, we seek to clarify this interactional effect of political and religious preferences on the level of interest in the space programs and commitment to space politics support among Evangelicals as it changed during Trump's presidency. Our research hypothesizes that during this time, the simultaneous presence of nationalist views in both accounts of …

Machine Learning To Predict Warhead Fragmentation In-Flight Behavior From Static Data, Katharine Larsen
Machine Learning To Predict Warhead Fragmentation In-Flight Behavior From Static Data, Katharine Larsen
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Accurate characterization of fragment fly-out properties from high-speed warhead detonations is essential for estimation of collateral damage and lethality for a given weapon. Real warhead dynamic detonation tests are rare, costly, and often unrealizable with current technology, leaving fragmentation experiments limited to static arena tests and numerical simulations. Stereoscopic imaging techniques can now provide static arena tests with time-dependent tracks of individual fragments, each with characteristics such as fragment IDs and their respective position vector. Simulation methods can account for the dynamic case but can exclude relevant dynamics experienced in real-life warhead detonations. This research leverages machine learning methodologies to …

Chemical Investigation And Drug Discovery Potential Of Terpenoid Secondary Metabolites From Three Deep-Sea Irish Soft Corals, Joshua Thomas Welsch
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Secondary metabolites produced primarily by terrestrial plants and animals have provided the basis for treatments and cures of human diseases as far back as historians have been able to probe. However, recent technological advances including the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, and even further remotely operated vehicles, have allowed researchers a unique opportunity for targeted collection of marine organisms at depths previously thought to possess conditions unsustainable for life as was understood. This has afforded a glimpse into the potential for not only life, but the potential for new biochemical adaptations developed over billions of years that have been evolutionarily developed …

Generative Methods, Meta-Learning, And Meta-Heuristics For Robust Cyber Defense, Marc W. Chalé
Generative Methods, Meta-Learning, And Meta-Heuristics For Robust Cyber Defense, Marc W. Chalé
Theses and Dissertations
Cyberspace is the digital communications network that supports the internet of battlefield things (IoBT), the model by which defense-centric sensors, computers, actuators and humans are digitally connected. A secure IoBT infrastructure facilitates real time implementation of the observe, orient, decide, act (OODA) loop across distributed subsystems. Successful hacking efforts by cyber criminals and strategic adversaries suggest that cyber systems such as the IoBT are not secure. Three lines of effort demonstrate a path towards a more robust IoBT. First, a baseline data set of enterprise cyber network traffic was collected and modelled with generative methods allowing the generation of realistic, …

A Climate Of Confessionalization: Famine And Difference In The Late Ottoman Empire, Matthew Ghazarian
A Climate Of Confessionalization: Famine And Difference In The Late Ottoman Empire, Matthew Ghazarian
Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications
After the 1877–78 Russo-Ottoman War, the Ottoman Empire saw the rise of ethnic and sectarian clashes in Anatolia, the Balkans, and elsewhere, and the task of explaining that rise remains unfinished. Many have examined the intellectual formations of ethnic and sectarian solidarities after 1878, but the availability of new ideas cannot alone account for their widespread uptake. Why after 1878 did ordinary people respond more to calls upon ethnic and sectarian solidarity? Drawing on sources surrounding the 1879 famine in the Ottoman East, this article steps away from imperial metropoles to examine overlapping environmental, financial, and technological disjunctures. Adopting the …
Ethics And Mathematics – Some Observations Fifty Years Later, Gregor Nickel
Ethics And Mathematics – Some Observations Fifty Years Later, Gregor Nickel
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Almost exactly fifty years ago, Friedrich Kambartel, in his classic essay “Ethics and Mathematics,” did pioneering work in an intellectual environment that almost self-evidently assumed a strict separation of the two fields. In our first section we summarize and discuss that classical paper. The following two sections are devoted to complement and contrast Kambartel’s picture. In particular, the second section is devoted to ethical aspects of the indirect and direct mathematization of modern societies. The final section gives a short categorization of various philosophical positions with respect to the rationality of ethics and the mutual relation between ethics and mathematics.

Advanced Analytical Method Development: From Highly-Enrolled Classroom To Data-Intensive Proteomics, Laxmi Sinduri Vuppala
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In analytical chemistry, method development is key to identifying, separating, and quantifying chemical components of interest systems. The chemical aspects are fundamental to understanding the subject of any analytical system, whether in academic research, industry, or government. These methodologies serve as a bridge between the classroom, where students are taught to be curious and enlightened, and research, where one strives to contribute. The Ph.D. dissertation integrates advanced methodologies in basic and applied research and advanced instrumentation, but the core criteria for validation remain the same. As part of chemical education curriculum development, a large cohort of undergraduates performed two gas …

One-Stage Blind Source Separation Via A Sparse Autoencoder Framework, Jason Anthony Dabin
One-Stage Blind Source Separation Via A Sparse Autoencoder Framework, Jason Anthony Dabin
Dissertations
Blind source separation (BSS) is the process of recovering individual source transmissions from a received mixture of co-channel signals without a priori knowledge of the channel mixing matrix or transmitted source signals. The received co-channel composite signal is considered to be captured across an antenna array or sensor network and is assumed to contain sparse transmissions, as users are active and inactive aperiodically over time. An unsupervised machine learning approach using an artificial feedforward neural network sparse autoencoder with one hidden layer is formulated for blindly recovering the channel matrix and source activity of co-channel transmissions. The BSS sparse autoencoder …
