Recent advances in nonlinear dynamics have led to more informative characterizations of complex signals making it possible to probe correlations in data to which traditional linear statistical and spectral analyses were not sensitive. Many of these new tools require detailed knowledge of small scale structures of the attractor; knowledge that can be acquired only from relatively large amounts of precise data that are not contaminated by noise-not the kind of data one usually obtains from experiments. There is a need for tools that can take advantage of ''coarse-grained'' information, but which nevertheless remain sensitive to higher-order correlations in the data. …

The National Marine Sanctuary Designation Process And Its Impact On Naval Operations, Gregory E. Bolan
The National Marine Sanctuary Designation Process And Its Impact On Naval Operations, Gregory E. Bolan
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper addresses the basis of potential and real conflicts derived by the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) process, as identified within and between NOAA and the United States Navy. This conflict is often exacerbated due to either a lack of communication, coordination, or both. A recent proliferation of proposed and designated marine sanctuaries in traditional Naval operating areas has complicated or hindered Naval operations (or will) to a degree where EIS derived restrictions negatively impact the Naval operations, based on (1) response readiness, and (2) increased cost of operations. Two specific conflicts are examined in a case study approach …
Draft Special Resource Study And Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of Interior National Park Service
Draft Special Resource Study And Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of Interior National Park Service
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
One of the responsibilities of the National Park Service is to identify nationally significant natural, cultural, and recreational resources and assist in their preservation both inside and outside the national park system. The areas managed by the National Park Service are only one part of a national inventory of special and protected areas managed by innumerable federal, state, and local agencies and the private sector. Consequently, addition to the national park system is only one of many alternatives for ensuring the preservation of significant national resources for public enjoyment and benefit. As such, the purpose of this study is to …

Spectroscopic Temperature Measurements For A Direct Current Arcjet Diamond Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor, Scott W. Reeve, Wayne A. Weimer
Spectroscopic Temperature Measurements For A Direct Current Arcjet Diamond Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor, Scott W. Reeve, Wayne A. Weimer
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The diamond thin filmcommercial market isprojected to exceed one billion dollars by the year 2000. Potential applications of diamond thin films range from cutting tools to electronics tomedical devices. The explosion ofinterest in this fieldresults from the extreme properties diamond possesses: itis the hardest material known toman and yet, has a coefficient of friction similar to Teflon;its ability to conduct heat is five times that of copper; and diamond is completely inert. However, despite the tremendous economic incentive, there are still several technological barriers preventing diamond filmscale-up to commercial production. Included among these are a fundamental understanding of the gas …
Artificially Intelligent Air Combat Simulation Agents, Daniel E. Gisselquist
Artificially Intelligent Air Combat Simulation Agents, Daniel E. Gisselquist
Theses and Dissertations
The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), in an effort to improve military simulations, has proposed a standard for Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). This network protocol will allow dissimilar applications to communicate simulation information. In the field of air combat, this will allow pilots in remote simulators to fly in a common simulation. The success of this standard is dependent on applications being able to work within that standard, as well as a large variety of Computer Generated Forces (CGFs) to complement interactive forces. CGFs are needed to help simulate the large combat scenarios that can only occur in wartime. By …
Analytic Performance Models For Parallel Discrete Event Battlefield Simulation With Conservative Synchronization, James B. Hiller
Analytic Performance Models For Parallel Discrete Event Battlefield Simulation With Conservative Synchronization, James B. Hiller
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the development and use of analytic models for performance analysis of parallel discrete event battlefield simulation using conservative synchronization. A simulation architecture with layered application, simulation, and host machine services provided the model development basis. Simulation entities were modeled with set-theoretic definitions. Deterministic performance models using these definitions were developed for event prediction, scheduling, and execution in sequential battlefield simulation. The sequential model was expanded to include relative bounds for overhead factors introduced when the simulation is spatially decomposed for a parallel distributed memory machine. Comparison of sequential and parallel models instantiated for a simulation with uniform …

Survey And Implementation Of Commercial Manual Controllers For A Generic Telerobotics Architecture, Thomas E. Deeter
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine an input device for the Air Force's generic telerobotics architecture for large aircraft maintenance and repair. One area of concern is the human to machine interface, more specifically, which manual controller should be used for the specified tasks in this architecture. We mailed a survey to 68 companies in order to compile a list of possible input devices that the telerobotics architecture could use. 32 companies responded which gave me enough data to generate a list that described the physical traits of the input devices. We then divided the required tasks into …
Generation Of A Single-Lobe, Far-Field Intensity Pattern From A Laser Diode Array Using An Optical Delay Line, Thomas A. Summers
Generation Of A Single-Lobe, Far-Field Intensity Pattern From A Laser Diode Array Using An Optical Delay Line, Thomas A. Summers
Theses and Dissertations
A simple and practical technique is demonstrated to generate a stable, single-lobe, far-field intensity pattern from a one-dimensional, antiphased, laser diode array with gain-guided elements. The two far-field lobes of the array are combined after introducing an optical delay line into the path of one of the lobes to make the lobes mutually incoherent. The incoherent superposition of intensities produces a near-diffraction-limited, single-lobe, far-field intensity pattern containing 84% of the power, exceeding any previous (known) phase control experiments. This technique compares favorably with more elaborate schemes advanced previously using integrated phase plates, etc. The method is directly applicable to one-dimensional …
Improving Intrusion Detection In Unix-Based Networks, David R. Landry
Improving Intrusion Detection In Unix-Based Networks, David R. Landry
Theses and Dissertations
Computer security has not kept pace with the rapid growth of networked systems. Through its connection to the Internet, the Department of Defense is vulnerable to computer-based attacks. Current intrusion detection systems are still unproven, too complicated, or too costly for most system security officers to implement. The attack methods used by system intruders are known and can be represented as groups of commands called attack signatures. This thesis investigates methods for detecting intruders by monitoring command usage. Testing was conducted in both controlled and uncontrolled circumstances. With controlled testing, it was shown that 7 of the 11 signatures could …
Design And Implementation Of Tools To Increase User Control And Knowledge Elicitation In A Virtual Battlespace, Jim J. Rohrer
Design And Implementation Of Tools To Increase User Control And Knowledge Elicitation In A Virtual Battlespace, Jim J. Rohrer
Theses and Dissertations
AFIT's Synthetic BattleBridge is an immersive command observatory for viewing large-area activity within a virtual environment. Three basic areas for improvement are addressed: (1) an improved, immersive, user interface, (2) direct control of atmospheric effects, and (3) improved knowledge elicitation by means of remote viewers, a new space scope, and an enhanced RADAR scope. These requirements are analyzed and implemented. Some functionality was lost but the results show a general improvement of environmental control and knowledge elicitation.

Extracting Parallelism At Compile-Time Through Dependence Analysis & Cloning Techniques In An Object-Based Paradigm, Binoy Ravindran
Extracting Parallelism At Compile-Time Through Dependence Analysis & Cloning Techniques In An Object-Based Paradigm, Binoy Ravindran
Theses
The construct of Abstract Data Type (ADT) modules and Abstract Data Object (ADO) modules supported by most object-based languages are a great source for developing reusable code. To improve the run time performance of such object-based programs, we consider the asynchronous remote procedure call (ARPC) model of parallel execution, in which concurrency is achieved by having the caller and the callee (which are module instances) running on different processors. Frequently, an ADT module is needed simultaneously by other modules, thus causing contention. To resolve this, we clone the module instance in demand and distribute the copies across different processors, so …
Feasibility Analysis For Predicting A Kinetic Kill Zone For Aircraft Homing Missile Defense, Mark E. Ennis
Feasibility Analysis For Predicting A Kinetic Kill Zone For Aircraft Homing Missile Defense, Mark E. Ennis
Theses and Dissertations
An extended Kalman filter is used to predict a kinetic kill zone for use in aircraft self defense versus homing missiles. The analysis is limited to an in-the-plane analysis and focuses on finding the model parameters which have the largest impact on the predicted kill zone. No attempt is made to optimize the design of the filter model itself. The analysis computes the kill zone relative to an assumed aircraft trajectory using strictly filter computed statistics. No Monte-Carlo simulations are used throughout the thesis. The filter assumed to be on the evading aircraft, uses an onboard laser radar (ladar) to …

An Air Mission Planning Algorithm For A Theater Level Combat Model, Brian J. Griggs
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the development of an air mission planning algorithm for the Joint Staffs Future Theater Level Model FTLM. The overall problem scope was to develop an algorithm to handle major factors bearing on the combat mission planning problem while providing hook-ups for the FTLM architecture. Other aspects of the problem included finding the appropriate level of detail, developing a fast solving technique, and attempting to use existing data. The problem was handled by using some ideas from existing aircraft allocation algorithms and by adding some new techniques. The proposed air mission planning algorithm supplies the optimum degree of …

Biological Management (Control) Of Vertebrate Pests-Advances In The Last Quarter Century, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Thomas R. Schmaderer
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 16th (1994)
In 1967, Howard provided a review of biological control of vertebrate pests. The term "biological control" was borrowed from the field of entomology, where it has been traditionally defined as "the reduction in number or density of pests through biological processes such as predation, pathogens, habitat modification, and fertility control." Current philosophy in wildlife damage management advocates "the reduction of damage to a tolerable level" rather than "the reduction of the number or density of vertebrate pests." Therefore we abdicate the term "biological control" and encourage the use of a new term, "biological management" of wildlife damage. Advances in science …

A River Ran Through It... : The Cultural Ecology Of The Santa Clara Valley Riparian Zone, Erin M. Reilly
Research Manuscript Series
This study addresses the nature of human interaction with the riparian environment in the Santa Clara Valley over time. This is not a new anthropological theme. Literature dates to 1863 The Earth as Modified by Human Action, by George P. Marsh); cultural ecologist Betty J Meggars stated: "The relationship- of culture to environment is one of the oldest problems in the science of anthropology ... "(Meggars, 1968:19); and, anthropologist Alfred Kroeber said: "no culture is wholly intelligible without reference to the nonculture, or so-called environmental factors with which it is in relation and which condition it "(Kroeber 1906:297).

The Persian Gulf Oil Spill: A Case Study Of Emerging International Law On Environmental Damages During Hostilities, Esther J. Mcclure
The Persian Gulf Oil Spill: A Case Study Of Emerging International Law On Environmental Damages During Hostilities, Esther J. Mcclure
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, the retreating Iraqis caused the deliberate discharge of six million barrels of oil into the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. The immediate impact on the ecosystem was dramatic, and, because of the intense media coverage of the conflict, highly visible to the American public. The spill popularized the term 'ecoterrorism' and raised serious questions about the applicability of international law to the situation. There are numerous conventions that seek to establish standards of due diligence for the prevention of accidental pollution and to impose civil liability on those who damage the environment, but …

A Distributed Interactive Simulation Based Remote Debriefing Tool For Red Flag Missions, Michael T. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Air Force leaders, recognizing the need for improved training following the Vietnam War, implemented the Red Flag exercises at Nellis AFB. At the heart of this training is the Red Flag Measurement and Debriefing System RFMDS and its capability to accurately reconstruct the elements of an intense exercise fought over the deserts of Nevada. This thesis uses the technology of distributed interactive simulation DIS to transmit aircraft telemetry onto computer networks, allowing the monitoring and analysis of live Red Flag missions at any site with compatible communications equipment and thesis software. The use of standard DIS protocols enables simulators to …

Using Discovery-Based Learning To Prove The Behavior Of An Autonomous Agent, David N. Mezera
Using Discovery-Based Learning To Prove The Behavior Of An Autonomous Agent, David N. Mezera
Theses and Dissertations
Computer-generated autonomous agents in simulation often behave predictably and unrealistically. These characteristics make them easy to spot and exploit by human participants in the simulation, when we would prefer the behavior of the agent to be indistinguishable from human behavior. An improvement in behavior might be possible by enlarging the library of responses, giving the agent a richer assortment of tactics to employ during a combat scenario. Machine learning offers an exciting alternative to constructing additional responses by hand by instead allowing the system to improve its own performance with experience. This thesis presents NOSTRUM, a discovery-based learning DBL system …
