A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg Jan 1918

A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Recently G. C. Young and A. Denjoy have communicated theorems—those in Denjoy's memoir are of an especially comprehensive character—dealing, in particular, with point sets where the four derivatives of a given continuous function are identical. It is the purpose of this note to treat an analogous problem that arises when "derivative" is replaced by "saltus." However, instead of confining ourselves to "saltus," we prove a more general theorem that applies essentially to all semi-continuous functions. We preface the proof of this theorem with the following

The Cost Of Producing Electricity At The Hamilton, Missouri Light And Power Company, Bernerd William Adams Jan 1916

The Cost Of Producing Electricity At The Hamilton, Missouri Light And Power Company, Bernerd William Adams

Bachelors Theses

"For those seeking information on the cost of producing electricity in steam plants, an unlimited amount of data may be found in the technical journals and text books. This information, however, is obtained from a careful analysis of the daily and hourly records kept by the largest central stations, hence, production costs are available only where the yearly out-put is several million kilowatt-hours. the small isolated stations of from one hundred to two hundred kilowatt capacity have not as a rule, become progressive enough to keep a complete record of operating costs...The test hereinafter reported was conducted from August 3rd. …

Some Chemical Problems In Geology, Reginald Scott Dean Jan 1916

Some Chemical Problems In Geology, Reginald Scott Dean

Masters Theses

"This thesis is in the main a compilation of the views held at this institution in regard to the problems discussed as interpreted by the author. No claims for originality are made except in the manner of presentation as the material used has been obtained by conference and class room work with Professor V. H. Gottschalk and Professor G. H. Cox and also to some extent with H. A. Buehler, State Geologist. On the other hand the material is an expression of these ideas as assimilated by the author and hence may in certain cases differ radically from the views …

A Phenomenon Of The Kansan Drift In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Nov 1914

A Phenomenon Of The Kansan Drift In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Among the minor phenomena of the glacial drift in Nebraska there is one which, though rarely observed by the public, is of interest and should be commended to the attention of naturalists. The reference here is to certain large, well-defined masses or blocks of such materials as sand, gravel, and coarse pebbles, which occur imbedded in the drift clays along with glacial bowlders, and which presumably have been similarly transported and deposited. These masses or blocks vary widely in color, texture, and kind. They also vary from the glacial matrix in which they are found and are the more striking …

Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always Jun 1913

Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

These experiments were carried out in connection with and subordinate to various soil investigations, the object being to determine the relation of the final water content of the soil to the hygroscopic coefficient and to determine to what extent the moisture was removed from the different portions of the subsoil not penetrated by plant roots.

The Measurement Of Mineral Electrode Potentials, John Charavelle Ingram Jan 1913

The Measurement Of Mineral Electrode Potentials, John Charavelle Ingram

Bachelors Theses

"The present investigation was undertaken with a view to consider the variables which tend to cause inaccuracy in the above mentioned measurements and as preliminary to a further study of the subject by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines. The subject is one which, judging from the work of others and from my own experience, will require much more experimentation before results are obtained which are sufficiently reliable for the use of the economic geologist"--Introduction, page 3-4.

Cross-Bedding In The White River Formation Of Northwestern South Dakota, Dean E. Winchester Jan 1913

Cross-Bedding In The White River Formation Of Northwestern South Dakota, Dean E. Winchester

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Rocks of White River (Oligocene) age have been known for many years to constitute numerous isolated buttes and mesas in the northwest corner of South Dakota, but no detailed study of their character and structural relations had been made until 1911, when, during an examination of the lignite area of that country, the writer had occasion to study the relation of the younger rocks to those containing lignite beds.

Todd, in 1895, recognized the White River formation in the Slim Buttes and called attention to the area in the following language:

3. Miocene beds, both White River and Loup Fork, …

Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy Jan 1913

Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this article and the data contained is an attempt to show how the percentage of manganese varies with different mounts of zinc salt present. It was also intended to determine the ratio of manganese to oxygen and zinc in the brown percipitate sic obtained upon the titration of manganese sulphate against a permanganate solution in the presence of varying quantities of zinc, but through an oversight the data is insufficient for this purpose"--Introduction, page 2.

Checker Board Drainage Due To Eroded Dikes, Julian Adolph Hielscher Jan 1912

Checker Board Drainage Due To Eroded Dikes, Julian Adolph Hielscher

Bachelors Theses

"The conclusions here drawn are the results of observations made during the past ten summers spent in this region while camping, fishing, and hunting; at first, with the native game wardens and fire rangers; later on independently or in company with some of the many tourists who annually visit this delightful region. In this manner it has been possible to cross and re-cross this territory in almost every direction. The highways into this wilderness are the streams and lakes and the only method of travel is by canoe, though short excursions can be made over land by following the paths …

Coal In Nebraska, Roy V. Pepperberg Jan 1910

Coal In Nebraska, Roy V. Pepperberg

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

Until February, 1906, Nebraska was termed "the state without a mine," and may still be called the state with but a single mine, and yet it would be impossible to tell how much prospecting has been done, or to estimate the number of thousands of dollars that have been spent in this state trying to develop paying mines from the thin beds of coal discovered throughout various parts of the state in the Carboniferous and Cretaceous formations.

Paleogeographic Maps Of North America, Bailey Willis Jan 1909

Paleogeographic Maps Of North America, Bailey Willis

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In passing from the Jurassic to the Lower Cretaceous North America underwent but little change along the Atlantic border and throughout the east. It remained a low land and the coastal plain was somewhat more deeply submerged. But on the Pacific coast, on the contrary, there was pronounced movement, particularly in the Coast Range of California. A bold peninsula developed from Oregon south to Santa Barbara and, being eroded, yielded the thick sediments of the Shasta group, which were deposited in marine water east of it, in part.

In Alaska the Shastan sea appears to have invaded the Jurassic land …
