Research On Multi-Objective Hybrid Flow-Shop Scheduling With Order Splitting, Junjie Yu, Weixi Ji, Chen Chen, Jingyu Lu, Chaoyang Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the order splitting multi-objective hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem (OSMOHFSP), a dual-objective optimization model was formulated with the objectives of minimizing makespan and total order tardiness. Fixed sub-batch specification constraints were incorporated to reflect common splitting limitations in actual production. A sub-batch generation strategy based on a candidate set of sub-batch specifications was designed to efficiently filter feasible splitting combinations, effectively reducing the search space dimensionality and computational complexity. A hybrid multi-objective metaheuristic algorithm integrating NSGA-II and SA was proposed. The global search capability was enhanced by constructing two crossover and four mutation operators. An improved SA embedding …

Ultra-Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Prediction Method Based On Spatio-Temporal Feature Enhancement Of Ground-Based Cloud Images, Zhiwei Kou, Fengyue Xin, Xiaoming Cui, Yu Yin, Feifan Li, Yongsheng Qi

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In view of the time lag in ground-based cloud image acquisition and the insufficient accuracy of existing photovoltaic power prediction models, an ultra-short-term photovoltaic power prediction method named spatial-temporal feature enhancement-ground-based cloud image-improved LSTM (STFE-GCI-ILSTM), which is based on spatio-temporal feature enhancement-ground-based cloud images-improved long short-term memory (LSTM) network was proposed. A ground-based cloud image prediction model with multi-scale spatio-temporal feature enhancement (STFE-GCI) was constructed. By spatial feature enhancement, temporal feature enhancement, and multi-scale feature fusion technologies, the deep spatio-temporal features of historical cloud image sequences were extracted to generate future predicted cloud image sequences, thereby eliminating the time …

Prediction Of Industrial Concentration Parameters Based On Caudformer Model, Kaipeng Xu, Yan Wang, Xin Zhang, Yang Liu, Zhenzhong Wang, Xiang Liu, Zhicheng Ji

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To solve the problems in the industrial concentration process of traditional Chinese medicine that traditional prediction methods are difficult to deal with complex characteristics such as nonlinearity, high-dimensional coupling, and highly skewed distribution and that existing deep learning models insufficiently consider causal relationships among variables, ignore frequency-domain periodic characteristics, and lack long-range dependency modeling capabilities, an improved multivariate time series prediction model CauDformer was proposed in this paper. Based on the iTransformer architecture, a causal multi-head self-attention mechanism (C-MHSA) was introduced to compulsorily constrain the dependency direction among variables by utilizing a lower triangular causal mask, guiding the model …

A Framework For Top-K Queries With Constrained Preferences, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Nikolaos Chaloulakos, Bo Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional rank-aware processing assumes a dataset that contains available options to cover a specific need (e.g., restaurants, hotels, etc) and users who browse that dataset via top-k queries with linear scoring functions, i.e., by ranking the options according to the weighted sum of their attributes, for a set of given weights. In practice, however, user preferences (weights) may only be estimated with bounded accuracy, or may be inherently imprecise due to the inability of a human user to specify exact weight values with absolute accuracy. Motivated by this, we define the constrained-preference top-k (CT) query. Given an approximate description of …

Knowledge-State Generative Agents For Pre-Assessment Question Evaluation, Ping Fan Ke, Yi Meng Lau, Siaw Ling Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces a Knowledge‑State Generative Agent framework for evaluating the quality of pre‑assessment questions. The framework employs large language model (LLM)–based agents prompted to adopt a teacher persona to simulate the responses of students with and without mastery of targeted knowledge components. A preliminary empirical study using archival data from 424 students enrolled in an Information Systems Management course indicates that the proposed approach yields interpretable metrics under Classical Test Theory. Results further show that agents instantiated with the relevant mastered knowledge components exhibit systematically higher performance than agents lacking such mastery. In addition, the study suggests that teacher-persona …

Mengukur Capaian Dan Identifikasi Konvergensi Pembangunan Infrastruktur Antarprovinsi Di Indonesia, Ressa Isnaini Arumnisaa', Aisyah Fitri Yuniasih

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Indonesia’s economic challenges are characterized by stagnant economic growth and regional development disparities. This study analyzes the achievement and convergence of infrastructure development across provinces in Indonesia during 2011–2021 through the construction of an Infrastructure Development Index (IPI). The study employs panel data from 33 provinces, using factor analysis to construct the IPI and the First Difference Generalized Method of Moments (FD-GMM) to examine convergence and its determinants. The results show that many provinces still have IDI scores below the national average. Furthermore, the FD-GMM model shows that σ-convergence and β-convergence occur in Indonesia. In addition, GRDP per capita, inflation, …

An Emergent Seafood Nationalism Takes Hold In The United States, Owen Temby

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper introduces the concept of ‘seafood nationalism’ to describe how, since 2024–2025, the United States increasingly uses tariffs, trade remedies, food safety enforcement and origin-based rules to favour American seafood over foreign products. Federal actions include Executive Order 14276, Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness, which directs agencies to address unfair trade practices, unsafe imports and to develop a coordinated seafood trade strategy. Additional measures include a tariff package imposing a 10% duty on nearly all seafood imports and 30% on seafood from China, as well as new anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders on warm-water shrimp. This paper presents Gulf …

Estimasi Underground Economy Triwulanan Di Indonesia Pada Tahun 2010–2023, Ghina Anandhia, Hardius Usman

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Underground economics have a significant impact on economy. Underground economy leads to low potential state revenues from the tax sector. This study estimates the quarterly value of the underground economy in Indonesia from 2010 to 2023 using the Error Correction Model (ECM) method. The results show that the average value of the underground economy in Indonesia is IDR138,392.32 billion, equivalent to 5.36 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 35.72 percent of tax revenue from 2010 to 2023. GDP and tax burden variables have a positive influence on currency demand.

Automated Machine Learning And Satellite Image Data Fusion For Monitoring Water Quality In Mosaicked Landscapes, Sahar Rezaei Jul 2026

Automated Machine Learning And Satellite Image Data Fusion For Monitoring Water Quality In Mosaicked Landscapes, Sahar Rezaei

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the ecological, economic, and social importance of inland water bodies, they are increasingly impacted by human and natural drivers. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) and total suspended solids (TSS) are key indicators of water quality, and elevated concentrations pose significant ecological and public health risks. The spatiotemporal dynamics of these variables remain insufficiently understood in major river systems, including the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) and the Illinois River Basin (IRB). While in situ measurements provide accurate observations, they are costly and offer limited spatial and temporal coverage, restricting basin-scale monitoring. Remote sensing offers a powerful alternative; however, single-sensor approaches are …

Advancing Social Media Analytics And Personalized Generation Via Transfer Learning, Discourse-Aware Modeling, And Collaborative Modeling, Gibson Nkhata

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social media platforms have become central to information exchange, shaping public opinion across social, political, and economic domains. However, the massive volume of user-generated content, combined with its informal, nuanced, and often noisy nature, presents significant challenges for automated analysis and generation. Tasks such as stance detection, rumor verification, and personalized content generation are further complicated by sarcasm, evolving discourse structures, and diverse user preferences. Addressing these challenges requires models that can effectively leverage linguistic nuance, conversational dynamics, and collaborative user signals. Transfer learning has emerged as a powerful paradigm for improving performance in low-resource and complex language understanding tasks. …

Univariate And Bivariate Binary Spatial Regression Models With Application To Plant Abundance Data, Amir Hamza Akash Jul 2026

Univariate And Bivariate Binary Spatial Regression Models With Application To Plant Abundance Data, Amir Hamza Akash

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing species distributions is of prime interest in ecological research. Prevalence of a species usually depends on several environmental and topographic features not all of which can be quantified or measured. Spatial random effects play an important role as a surrogate for missing features that can explain similarity in species prevalence patterns between neighboring locations. In this thesis, we focus on a dataset on abundance of plants in the southern part of South Africa. First, we build a hierarchical Bayesian model for binary regression, using the probit link, on presence/ absence of a species based on available covariates. Since the …

Eeg P300 Ai Classification And Accessibility Keyboard Control Using Openbci’S Ultracortex Mark Iv For Reactive Brain-Computer Interaction, Grant King

Theses and Dissertations

Brain-computer interfaces provide people who cannot feasibly control a keyboard and mouse with an alternative method to type, to move a cursor, or to generally issue commands and make selections. A non-invasive recording modality for brain-computer interfaces is electroencephalography, or EEG. The OpenBCI Ultracortex Mark IV is an EEG headset enabling relatively low-cost EEG acquisition using wet or dry electrodes. P300 is an event-related potential involving a deflection in an EEG channel's voltage typically 300 milliseconds after the onset of an "oddball" stimulus. A person's P300 response can be used to control a selector application. This study investigates classification of …

Improved Pbs Algorithm For Multi-Agent Path Planning Based On Conflict Guidance And Punishment Mechanism, Jinbao Zhang, Jianlin Mao, Chengze Qian, Guimi Sun, Kaixin Tong Jul 2026

Improved Pbs Algorithm For Multi-Agent Path Planning Based On Conflict Guidance And Punishment Mechanism, Jinbao Zhang, Jianlin Mao, Chengze Qian, Guimi Sun, Kaixin Tong

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the bottleneck in which the priority-based search (priority-based search, PBS) algorithm for multi-agent path planning easily falls into conflict loops and generates invalid node expansions in complex scenarios, an improved algorithm based on conflict guidance and a punishment mechanism (improved PBS multi-agent path finding algorithm based on conflict guidance and punishment mechanism, CGP-PBS) was proposed. A conflict-guided node expansion mechanism was constructed; in high-level search, it comprehensively evaluated path cost and the number of conflicts, preferentially expanded child nodes with high potential for conflict resolution, and delayed the expansion of high-conflict nodes, thereby effectively compressing the search …

Impartial Intelligence? Evidence Of Country-Label Sensitivity In Ai Financial Analysis, Fabio Motoki, Jedson Pinto Jul 2026

Impartial Intelligence? Evidence Of Country-Label Sensitivity In Ai Financial Analysis, Fabio Motoki, Jedson Pinto

School of Accountancy Faculty Publications

This study examines whether large language models exhibit systematic country-contingent differential treatment in financial fraud detection. Analyzing 30,000 synthetic transactions with identical statistical properties across three country attributions (United States, Great Britain, and China), we find LLMs assign significantly higher fraud probabilities to Chinese-attributed transactions (36.2%) compared to Western countries (≈30–31%), resulting in accuracy disparities of 67% versus 74%. The gap remains stable across five independent experimental replications and persists when using Chinese language prompts, ruling out linguistic effects. Bias mitigation strategies, such as requiring explanations or explicit country neutrality instructions, reduce but fail to eliminate these disparities. Testing across …

Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan Jul 2026

Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan

Michigan Journal of International Law

As the climate crisis intensifies, advocates worldwide have stood up to defend their communities, territories, and environment. In response, they have faced violent retaliation. This repression persists despite evolving international, regional, and national-level legal frameworks around the “right to defend rights” and the “right to protection.” This article begins by providing a comprehensive overview of this evolving legal landscape. Against this backdrop, the article examines the tactics and architectures of violence used to repress land and environmental defenders through the lens of counterinsurgency theory.

The article proposes a typology of counterinsurgent violence including: surveillance; stigmatization; criminalization; arbitrary detention; infiltration; cooptation; …

Using Recommender Systems To Help Revitalize Local News, Payam Pourashraf Jul 2026

Using Recommender Systems To Help Revitalize Local News, Payam Pourashraf

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Local news outlets have experienced steep declines in readership as national and global online news sources have expanded and consolidated audience attention. Because many local media companies rely primarily on subscription-based business models, they must increase user engagement and provide clearer value to local subscribers. Personalization and recommender systems offer one promising path toward this goal. However, many recommender systems assume that a user’s past behavior can be summarized in a single unified profile. In practice, preferences are often context-dependent: the same person may prefer different content depending on geography, time, task, or situation. Local news offers a socially important …

Environmental And Socioeconomic Effects Of Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil Certification: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Kibrom T. Sibhatu, Matin Qaim

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Palm oil is the most widely produced and consumed vegetable oil worldwide, but its production is associated with deforestation and other environmental and social problems. Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is the only internationally-recognized voluntary certification standard aimed at mitigating such problems. Many studies examine RSPO’s effects on particular outcomes in specific contexts, but a consolidated global assessment is lacking. Here, we systematically review the literature and identify 53 original studies covering RSPO effects in various countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Where data availability permits, we also conduct meta-analysis. Results reveal that RSPO can lead to environmental …

Operational Agency: A Permeable Legal Fiction For Tracing Culpability In Ai Systems, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems act with a high degree of independence yet lack legal personhood—a paradox that fractures doctrines grounded in human-centric notions of mens rea and actus reus. This Article introduces Operational Agency (OA)—a permeable legal fiction structured as an ex post evidentiary framework—and Operational Agency Graph (OAG)—a tool for mapping causal interactions among human actors, organizations, and AI systems. OA evaluates an AI’s observable operational characteristics: its goal-directedness (as a proxy for intent), predictive processing (as a proxy for foresight), and safety architecture (as a proxy for standard of care). OAG operationalizes that analysis by embedding these …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The cassava whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) greatly constrains cassava production across Africa due to its role as a vector of viral diseases that cause substantial yield losses. Effective management of this insect pest requires detailed knowledge of its spatio-temporal distribution, however long-term datasets are scarce. Mechanistic models circumvent these long-term data needs by modelling temperature-dependent processes that govern population dynamics. Nevertheless, their application to B. tabaci remains poorly explored. Here, we developed a mechanistic model to derive a risk index (RI) for B. tabaci across Africa, focusing on Malawi. The model integrates the effects of temperature on the life stages of …

Micro-Topographic Control On Soil Moisture And Ph Dynamics In A Northern Peatland Ecosystem: A Case Study From Saco Heath, Maine, Henry Mahoney

Student Publications

Peatland ecosystems are characterized by complex structural microtopography, prominently featuring elevated hummocks and depressed hollows that establish critical micro-environmental and ecohydrological gradients. This study investigates the influence of micro-topographic positioning on soil moisture and pH dynamics at the Saco Heath Preserve; a raised acid bog located in southern Maine. Data collection was focused entirely within Sphagnum moss, which serve as the dominant vegetative component across multiple structural hummocks and hollows. Using a systematic temporal framework and a robust spatial sampling strategy (n = 100 per micro-habitat) between July 16 and August 16, we quantified physical moisture contents and chemical pH …

Comparative Analysis Of Task Scheduling In Multi-Tier Fog-Cloud Computing: From Classical Approaches To Greedy Multi-Objective Optimization, Zafril Rizal M. Azmi, Najmul Haque, Saydul Akbar Murad

Faculty Publications

Fog computing extends cloud services to the network edge, enabling low-latency processing for time-sensitive applications. However, scheduling complexity significantly increases due to heterogeneous resources, dynamic workloads, and strict Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints. Although numerous scheduling techniques have been proposed, existing studies often assess only a narrow subset of algorithms or rely on offline metaheuristics unsuitable for real-time environments. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative evaluation of twelve scheduling algorithms, including five classical, one heuristic, and six metaheuristic-inspired approaches, within a realistic 20-node multi-tier fog-cloud topology. Across 1,365 experiments spanning seven utilization levels, we analyze each algorithm’s deadline adherence, load distribution, and …

A Dynamical Realization Of Holography In Cosmology From Hyperbolic General Relativity: Explicit Dimensional Reduction Via Curvature-Generated Shock Relaxation, Kiperman Jack Jul 2026

A Dynamical Realization Of Holography In Cosmology From Hyperbolic General Relativity: Explicit Dimensional Reduction Via Curvature-Generated Shock Relaxation, Kiperman Jack

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Holography asserts that the dynamics of a gravitational system may be determined by degrees of freedom associated with a lower-dimensional structure, rather than by independent volumetric variables. While this principle is well established in boundary-based constructions, its realization in cosmology has remained elusive due to the absence of fixed asymptotic boundaries. In this work, we present an explicit realization of holography in cosmology arising directly from the hyperbolic structure of general relativity. We show that the nonlinear evolution of the Einstein equations coupled to a scalar field generically produces a global control structure identified with the cosmological apparent horizon. By …

Cosmic Chirps: Studies In The Evolution And Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Compact Binary Systems, Calla Irene Bassett Bigg Jul 2026

Cosmic Chirps: Studies In The Evolution And Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Compact Binary Systems, Calla Irene Bassett Bigg

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation will go over three projects that have to do with gravitational wave mechanics and history. The first project is about investigating computationally cheaper approximation methods for modeling EMRI (extreme mass ratio inspiral) orbits using interpolation. Two codes are interpolated together for full coverage of the parameter space. This interpolation has yet to be tested for accuracy but the preliminary outlook is positive. This may well be a useful tool for studying EMRIs. The second project is investigating the origins of the term “chirp mass”, where chirp mass is a combination of the two masses in a binary that …

Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery Jul 2026

Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Ozark Highlands is an ecoregion in the mid-southern portion of the United States that is characterized by a mosaic of tallgrass prairies, oak (Quercus spp.) savannas, and oak-hickory (Carya spp.) forests, which represents a unique biophysical transition zone between the relatively dry grasslands of the west and the humid forests of the southeast. Quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), from natural, undisturbed ecosystems is critical to understanding atmospheric warming and climate-change implications. The objective of this study was to simultaneously evaluate CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions in an aquic and …

Iterative Generation Of Feature-Based Cad Models Using An Llm With Domain Specific Constraints, Ammon I. Hepworth Jul 2026

Iterative Generation Of Feature-Based Cad Models Using An Llm With Domain Specific Constraints, Ammon I. Hepworth

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a method to generate feature-based parametric mechanical CAD models from text input. The method uses domain-specific constraints (DSCs) to guide a large language model (LLM) in the generation of scripts to build models from the CAD API. It also presents a framework for an iterative text-based system that produces parametric CAD models. The method was implemented by developing DSCs for FreeCAD and Open AI GPT-5.2 and incorporated into a web-based software application which generates models that can be visualized with an interactive viewer after each iteration. Tests were run comparing various models with and without this method. …

Multicbr: Multi‑View Contrastive Learning For Bundle Recommendation, Yunshan Ma, Yingzhi He, Xiang Wang, Yinwei Wei, Xiaoyu Du, Yuyangzi Fu, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bundle recommendation seeks to recommend a bundle of related items to users to improve both userexperience and the profits of platform. Existing bundle recommendation models have progressed from capturing only user-bundle interactions to the modeling of multiple relations among users, bundles, and items.CrossCBR, in particular, incorporates cross-view contrastive learning into a two-view preference learningframework, significantly improving SOTA performance. It does, however, have two limitations: (1) the twoview formulation does not fully exploit all the heterogeneous relations among users, bundles, and items; and(2) the “early contrast and late fusion” framework is less effective in capturing user preference and difficultto generalize to …

Late-Night And Early-Morning Train Scheduling With Non-Traffic Hour Maintenance Window In Urban Rail Transit Systems, Yaochen Ma, Hai Yang, Hai Wang Jul 2026

Late-Night And Early-Morning Train Scheduling With Non-Traffic Hour Maintenance Window In Urban Rail Transit Systems, Yaochen Ma, Hai Yang, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Regular maintenance during non-traffic hours (NTH) is vital for the resilience of urban rail transit (URT) systems, yet an insufficient NTH maintenance window poses a challenge for URT systems in various cities. For instance, the Hong Kong MTR Corporation has noted that the required NTH maintenance time often exceeds the available window, prompting service adjustments such as earlier late-night closures and/or later early-morning starts. To address this challenge, this study develops an optimal scheduling framework that links late-night and early-morning URT services through the NTH maintenance window requirement to maximize public welfare. A Decoupled Optimization Model (DOM) first derives closed-form …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning-based dynamic fault localization techniques play a crucial role in the field of software engineering. These techniques dynamically execute test cases to meticulously extract useful knowledge from the execution information in the program, with the aim of identifying fault locations by leveraging machine learning, deep learning, and large language models. Currently, there is already a flourishing body of research that is intensely focused on learning-based dynamic fault localization. Research literature can be categorized into two main aspects for learning-based dynamic fault localization: data-based enhancements (i.e., the datasets) and model-based enhancements (i.e., the suspiciousness algorithms). Thus, we conduct an extensive literature …
