The opening of Indian country has continued from Colonial days to the present. Usually it has resulted from force and treaty, the strong dispossessing the weak. As a result, the Red man has, in general, moved frontierward, ahead of industrial waves, remaining for a longer time only on reservations set aside for tribes. The Indian's struggle even on these reserves has been a losing one, resulting largely from war, disease, and the cupidity of whites. THE accompanying sketches represent the skull of a species of rhinoceros, Diceratherium arikarense, supposedly new, discovered by the geological expedition of 1905, sent from the University of Nebraska by the Hon. Charles H. Morrill to the Loup Fork beds at Agate, Nebraska, on the ranch of Mr. James Cook.

The genus Diceratherium was established by Marsh in 1875 on material from the Miocene beds near the John Day River in eastern Oregon, and two species, armatum and nanum, were recognized. A third species, advenum, was based on material from the Eocene (possibly Miocene) of Utah. Difference of horizon, …

Daimonelix when first discovered, in 1891, was thought to be confined to the elevated tablelands of central Sioux County, Nebraska. In the meantime its range has been extended and it is now known almost throughout the entire Arikaree formation, a tract probably about five hundred miles in diameter, situated in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado. The more fibrous forms of Daimonelix constitute a character so constant as to justify the name Fibrous Arikaree for the upper half of the formation.

The increasing demand for camphor for use in the manufacture of cellulose plastics has led to a great amount of investigation of the nature of this valuable substance and as to its synthesis from materials which are readily obtainable without the necessity for sending overseas for them. At present most of the camphor used in the manufacture of celluloid and allied compounds is imported from Japan or Borneo, where it is obtained, in a rather crude and wasteful fashion, from a species of laurel. According to the last census, 92 1/2 per cent of the Utah farms are irrigated. The advancement of agriculture in this State mainly depends upon the water, the available supply of which, in many of the older settled localities of the State, is already wholly utilized during the irrigation period. The future reclamation of new lands in such localities must, therefore, wait on the development of new sources of supply from storage reservoirs, sub-surface supplies, or from a more economical use of the summer flow of the available streams.
