Only a casual perusal of the literature treating of enzymes impresses one with the importance of the subject. How could the process of digestion be carried on without the action of enzymes? The tanning industry is primarily concerned with so-called bates, which are enzymes. Other industrial ope.rations, such as brewing, the manufacture of glue, petroleum refining, the production of rubber and starch, are likewise largely dependent on enzymatic action. Another phase of enzyme activity turns to the prevention of disease and medical diagnosis.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

It is the object of this paper to present a method for classifying and evaluating the soils as mapped in regular soil surveys on the basis of land types, which are here defined as areas having reasonably similar productivity and use suitabilities. The standards used to differentiate land types will vary according to the desired objectives, but any material difference in yield, or in practices necessary to maintain a desirable level of productivity will justify recognition of land types. The work undertaken in this thesis was done in cooperation with Joseph Sevenich and is a continuation of the work done by George Hable, Leonard Veranth and Lewis Wrangell. In this present work, the melting points of various trinary mixtures of waxes was studied, also the reliability of the method used in the determinations, and the effect of heat upon the mixtures. Graphs are used in the thesis in order to present a clearer picture of the work done and the results obtained.

The history and development of the Nebraska State Museum since 1891 have been summarized in a preliminary manner up to 1925 in the first number of Volume I of the Bulletin of the Nebraska State Museum.1 Since 1927, the collections of the Nebraska State Museum, The University of Nebraska, have been housed in a new building, Morrill Hall, on the city campus of The University of Nebraska. It now seems fitting to report upon the exceptional progress of the past few years, and to acknowledge the fine cooperation of those who have helped to make it possible.

Initial interest in the preparation of glucuronic acid from gum acacia was prompted by several reasons. Being interested in both the chemical and biological fields, the subject of glucuronic acid made a strong appeal. Although glucuronic acid was discovered over fifty years ago, its position in physiology remained until recently undefined. Now, however, it seems fairly certain that this compound is closely related to carbohydrate metabolism and plays an im­portant role as a detoxicating agent in the body.

Distribution of population in State. The estimated population for the State of New Mexico for the year 1930 was 423,300. A close observation of the population centers shows them to be scattered over a wide range of territory. The largest city, Albuquerque, has approximately 26,000 citizens. The next sites, according to the 1930 count, are three in number, Santa Fe, Roswell, and Clovis. The remaining population including rural districts do not number over eight thousand people.

Probably the only man who may be considered to be the founder of the science of limnology was F. A. Forel, of the University of Lausanne Switzerland. Professor Forel’s work was the start of a rapidly developing branch of study, not only in Europe, but also presently in North America.

The curiosity of the author prompted research along the lines herein explained and a correlation between the amount of maltose in a malt wort and other variable factors explained in the following chapters was sought.

There has been a great deal of work done in the malting field which adapts itself readily to organic research. Cherokee County has an area of 585 square miles. The greater part is covered with hydrophytes and mesophytes, but there are some Xerophytic areas. A large part of its area is covered with typical prairie grassland. Thickets of plum, sumac, persimmon, hawthorne, blackberry, and buck brush occur in pastures and wastelands. Along the streams may be found the elm-ask-oak assocations and other plants. Along the embankments may be found blackberry, sumac, and wild rose. Surrounding the ponds and marsh areas are rushes, reeds, button willows, and willows.

Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.
