Ecological Significance Of Vegetation To Northern Pike, Esox Lucius, Spawning, D. B. Mccarraher, Robert E. Thomas

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Since 1955, information has been collected from six Nebraska sandhill lakes to evaluate northern pike spawning success based on type of aquatic vegetation preferred by pike for spawning. The lakes, all located in Cherry County, were Big Alkali, Watts, Hackberry, Cottonwood, Shell, and Pelican. Several investigators have commented that pike year class strength is closely related to type and abundance of aquatic vegetation present in a lake (Clark and Steinbach, 1959; Forney, 1967). Documented information on spawning habitats is scant other than vague references to pike spawning over submerged vegetation or inundated meadows.

Representative factors influencing water quality in the Albert Lea, Minnesota area were chosen as to assess water quality and changes in the watershed which has been described as an earlier valley of the Shell Rock River.

Parameters representative of chemical, bacterial, and thermal pollution were, respectively, total phosphorous, total and fecal coliform counts, and temperature. Statistical analysis has revealed that significant differences in some parameters measured do exist when various sampling stations of a given sampling date are compared. Statistical analysis also has indicated that correlations do exist between fluctuation patterns when all sampling stations of a given sampling date …

The systematic investigations of the potential of the Ord area for irrigated farming began during the Second World War when the possibilities of damming the river were first examined, initial soil survey was carried out, and agricultural experiments started. The Kimberley Research Station was established on its present site in 1945. A year later the State and Commonwealth Governments agreed to finance and operate the Station jointly, with CSIRO and the Western Australian Department of Agriculture being responsible for research.

The conclusion to Mr. Malcolm's review, set out below, summarises much of what is known about shrub establishment in saline areas.

Late spring frosts commonly reduce yields and affect the quality of grain in wheat crops, especially in the southern, eastern and north-eastern districts. The damage is usually localised on individual farms, but is sometimes widespread.

Barley, and oats to a lesser extent, are also affected. Average losses of wheat in Western Australia have been estimated at 3 to 5 per cent, per year, or about 2 million bushels on current production figures.

In the theory of linear statistical models, one frequently encounters consistent systems of linear equations Ax= y. If A is nonsingular then a unique solution is given by x - 1 A y. If A is singular or rectangular however, then there are an infinite number of solutions; and the theory of generalized matrix inverses can be used to generate and characterize the solution set.

This thesis examines properties of generalized matrix inverses, and their use in solving linear equations, and in particular the role they play in treating the concept of estimability.

"The guidance personnel in a high school are often burdened with the duty of hand scheduling the student's courses. Using the computer as a sub-optimizing tool in the registration of students, however, can cut scheduling time dramatically and relieve the guidance department of an onerous chore. The report describes an alternative to the use of septic tanks for invidual dwellings. The major problems confronting the larger wastewater treatment plants (0.012 to 10 million gallons per day) in central Florida are also discussed. Solutions in this report are for individual and multi-unit dwelling treatment systems (to 0.06 MGD). these units can provide 90% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids (SS) removal in accord with new state and county regulations. A comparison of the large versus the small plants reveals that small innovative plants, though more expensive, are more environmentally sound than the poorly operated large facilities. …

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee

The nutrient contribution of septic tanks to a lake was evaluated at Lake Sallie, in glacial outwash terrain of northwestern Minnesota. Groundwater entering the lake was collected by covering 0.258 m2 of lake bed with a bottomless cylinder vented to deflated plastic bag. Inflow velocity ranged from 0.01 to 2.5 micrometers per-second along 30% of the lakeshore. Groundwater inflow along an 800 m segment of shore amounted to 4.50 x 105 m3/year, and was uniformly distributed along the shore, but decreased exponentially away from shore.

The benefits of intravenous therapy have become more and more apparent over the years. Medications can be given rapidly with an expectant rapid onset of action. The response to the drugs or fluids can often be closely controlled by regulating the dose or rate of administration. Frequently, adequate blood and tissue levels needed to eradicate many serious infections can be reached only by this route. Intravenous therapy is an especially appropriate method when the use of the oral tract, for one reason or another, cannot be used.

The hemoglobin of Tubifex tubifex is found in solution in the blood of the worm in cells as in vertebrates. The binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin can be followed spectrophotometrically. A peak of absorbtion at 540 nm is fairly constant under different condition, while a peak at 575 nm disappears from the spectrum when oxygen is removed. The hemoglobin contains heme, non-heme iron and protein.

Binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin was found to be dependent on the concentration of the hemoglobin, at low concentrations (4.16 x 10^-6 M), oxygen could not be removed from the hemoglobin. Only …

Bolaform electrolytes are those which contain two or more charges separated by an inert framework. These are intermediate in structure between simple electrolytes and polyelectrolytes. Since these are similar to both synthetic and biological electrolytes, this investigation has been undertaken to determine some of their properties in solution.

The sodium and magnesium salts of ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane and decane α,ω-disulfonates were prepared. Each acid was prepared by refluxing the α,ω-dibromide of the desired salt with sodium sulfite. The sodium and magnesium salts were prepared by ion-exchange techniques.

Polecat Creek is an occasionally intermittent stream which drains approximately 18,368 acres in eastern Coles County, Illinois. It travels 15.2 miles through cropland and a partially wooded valley before it enters the Embarrass River 3 miles upstream from Lake Charleston. The stream ranges from 0.5 foot to 5 feet deep at a normal water level, with an average depth of 16 inches. It averages 12 feet wide, with a range from 4 to 20 feet.

A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.

The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …

Then, to correlate this information, a pH profile may be established to predict chemical stability with ampicillin sodium alone or when other drugs may be included in the admixture.
