A continuous precipitation method for the preparation of crystalline pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) has been developed. The process involves the precipitation of PETN from an acetone solution by the addition of water in a static mixer. The principal independent variable is the ratio, R, of the acetone-PETN solution flow rate to the flow rate of water.

A mathematical model based on dispersed plug-flow equations adequately represents the physical process. The relationships developed can be used to predict particle size distributions, two explosion properties of PETN, and estimate the effective kinetics involved in the precipitation process. The purpose of this investigation was to study ultraviolet radiation effects on rotifers. The rotifer studied was Philodina acuticornis odiosa Milne. Isolation cultures were used to grow the rotifers individually in separate U-plate depressions. The source of ultraviolet radiation consisted of four mercury germicidal lamps used in combination to deliver a uniform flux of 315 uW/cm² over the sample. Five groups of rotifers, one control and four experimental groups of 96 each, were used. The rotifers used were 2-10 hours of age at the beginning of the experiment. The movement of sediment in non-submerged flow through a rigid grass media was studied experimentally by simulating the media with cylindrical nails. Models of sediment movement were developed from probablistic reasoning and from the use of existing parameters describing total bed material in open channel flow. In the probability analysis, the percent sediment trapped was found to be a power function of the number of potential fall paths, N_f,a particle could make from the surface to the bed while traveling through the filter media. The purpose of the project was to determine the value of using lagoons as a supplemental process for treating the effluent from an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant.

Only tentative conclusions can be suggested since the project was not carried to completion. It appears that lagoons will have only minimal effect on the amounts of total nitrogen and phosphate in the plant effluent, although conversion of a portion of the ammonia to nitrate can be expected. However, the concentration of ammonia was never lower than that required by EPA guidelines. Some reduction of soluble BOD appears to occur, perhaps through …

A study of the vegetation of Vigo County was undertaken to categorize and map presettlement and contemporary vegetation patterns, and to relate these patterns to climate, topography, soil types and land-use changes. Vigo County was divided into four major topographic units according to geography and soil types. Ttese units served as the basis for this study. The General Land Office Survey of 1814 provided data for the presettlement forest distribution. Sixteen contemporary stands were sampled to obtain data for characterization of present-day vegetation patterns. Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been purified 1000-fold from porcine kidney and 400-fold from mouse L1210-induced tumor tissue by classical methods. The enzyme preparations have been demonstrated to be essentially free of contaminating methionine synthetase and serine transhydroxymethylase activity. Studies of the kinetic properties of the kidney and tumor enzymes, with respect to the reverse reaction using N5-methyl tetrahydrofolate as the variable substrate, have indicated Km values of 2.0 and 2.4 x 10-4 M, respectively. Inhibition of this key branch point enzyme in folate metabolism by a number of antimetabolites indicates that several of these antifolate compounds exhibit enzyme inhibition superior …

The electron impact generated mass spectra of ¹³C- labeled trans-stilbene, bibenzyl, trans-stilbene oxide, 1,2-dibromo-1,2-dyphenylethane, and tolan were studied. Scrambling of the molecular ion prior to fragmentation was examined, and the scrambling pattern occurring was determined wherever possible. Synthesis of 1,α’-¹³C₂-trans-stilbene was accomplished by strating with 1-¹³C- and 2-¹³C-acetic acid. 1,α’-¹³C₂-bibenzyl, starting with 1,α’-¹³C₂-trans-stilbene oxide, 1,α’-¹³C₂-l,2-dibromo-l,2-diphen­ylechane, and 1,α’-¹³C₂-tolan were all synthesized from the dilabeled stilbene. This study concerned the feasibility of using digital satellite imagery and automatic data processing (ADP) techniques as a means of mapping swamp forest vegetation. Multispectral scanner data acquired by the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1; renamed LANDSAT-1) was analyzed using ADP techniques developed by Purdue University's Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS). The site for this investigation was the Dismal Swamp, a 210,000 acre swamp forest located south of Suffolk, Va. on the Virginia-North Carolina border. The purpose of this investigation was to study the reaction of 2-aminopyridine with picryl halides with the goal of providing evidence in support of a mechanism accounting for the formation of the observed products. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was employed to measure the relative amounts of the various picryl protons in the product mixture, which were assumed to be proportional to the mole percent of the corresponding compounds. 2-Aminopyridine reacted with picryl chloride by a nucleophilic bimolecular substitution reaction to give 2-(N-picrylamino)pyridine as the major product; however, the major product of the reaction of 2-amino­pyridine with picryl fluoride is 1-picryl-2-(N-picrylimino)-1,2-dihydro­pyridine. …

Normal-pulse laser interaction with organic solids was studied. Extensive interaction between the carrier gas and the plasma occurred in the quenching process. When hydrogen was used as the carrier gas, significantly greater quantities of products were detected from the laser pyrolysis of graphite and coal compared to laser pyrolysis in helium. Acetylene was shown to be the principal hydrocarbon product from plasma quenching. Equilibrium product distributions calculated at high temperatures by the minimization of free energy revealed that hydrogen and acetylene were the primary gaseous plasma quenching products for hydrocarbons. Lake Herman, a recreational, shallow, warm water prairie lake near Madison, South Dakota drain in extensively cultivated watershed and acts as a siltation basin for a chain of four lakes. The lake is more than half silted in and since 1968 various rehabilitation efforts have been made, including the construction of silt traps and lake dredging.

Environmental protection provided by control facilities requires basic knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of feedlot runoff. This thesis describes a comparative study of 82 vegetarian and 21 non-vegetarian Seventh-day Adventist females ages 25 to 65 to discover if there is a possible correlation between diet and weight. The subjects were chosen by random sampling in the specified target population and were personally interviewed by the use of a questionnaire.

The general linear hypothesis analysis shewed that present age and relative weight at age 25 were significant in terms of present relative weight; however, physical activity and socioeconomic stratum were not significant. Diet, defined as vegetarian or non-vegetarian, was only marginally significant.

Macrocyclic polyether sulfides have been prepared by reacting an oligoethylene glycol dichloride with a dithiol in refluxing basic ethanol. The following new compounds were prepared: 1,5-dithia-(19- crown-6), 3-hydroxy-1,5-dithia-(19-crown-6), 1,4-dithia-(21-crown-7), 3-hydroxy-1,5-dithia-(22-crown-7), and 1,4-dithia-(24-crown-8). One other previously reported macrocyclic polyether sulfide was also prepared. The thesis includes a review of macrocyclic sulfides and other related compounds, the thermodynamics of interaction of several macrocyclic polyether sulfides with Ag^+, Hg^2+, and Pb^2+ ions, and a discussion of the structure of these materials.

The Gas Filter Correlation Radiometer Analyzer (GFCR), in application to the remote sensing of trace gases in the atmosphere, is potentially limited by the sensitivity of the measured upwelling thermal radiation to surface temperature and atmospheric temperature conditions. This study has been carried out to examine the principles of operation of the GFCR Analyzer and to obtain quantitative estimates of the errors produced in GFCR Analyzer measurements of CO (4.6μ), S02 (8.6μ), NH3 (11.0μ), and CH4 (8.1μ) resulting from uncertainties in the atmospheric temperature profile and ground temperature.

The aqueous modification of polyol modified anhydride cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A exhibits properties of a brittle solid when subjected to an impulse stress, and properties of a viscous fluid when subjected to a steady state stress. This behavior is markedly different from the nonaqueous system. Early attempts to understand the nature of the change in properties and the physical mechanism involved have not been completely successful. The use of trickle irrigation is discussed with reference to Tanzania. A split-split plot design experiment is described in which yields of tomato, onion, and cabbage are compared for trickle and hand-irrigated plots, with different levels of fertiliser treatment. Yields for trickle-irrigated plots were significantly greater only for tomatoes. These results were achieved during July to October and a second attempt to grow the same vegetables during December to March was unsuccessful. The amphipod Gammaru. minus has three morphotypes in its Appalachian range : (1) a spring form with well-developed eyes, (2) an intermediate cave form with slightly reduced eyes, and (3) an extreme cave form with greatly reduced eyes. This study compares the genetic structure of populations in two karst areas and analyzes the genetics of populations of the three morphotypes.

Genetic data were collected from populations in the Ward's Cove, Virginia and Greenbrier Valley, West Virginia karst areas using zone electrophoresis zymograms. One hundred percent of the Ward's Cove populations are polymorphic at both MDH-1 and PEP 1 loci …
