A Revision Of The Genus Strategus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Brett C. Ratcliffe

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The New World genus Strategus Kirby is here defined and revised for the first time. Eight species are described as new: S. atlanticus, S. caymani, S. craigi, S. hipposiderus, S. howdeni, S. longichomperus, S. symphenax, and S. tarquinius; 12 new junior synonyms are established (including the rejection of six previously valid species)'; one species is raised from synonymy; and two new replacement names are proposed. Strategus now contains one fossil species and 31 valid extant species. A key to the males and females of all the species is provided for the first …

Most enforcement cases involving our laboratory deal with the identification of a blood stain or meat sample which is suspected to be deer. Determining whether it is, indeed, from deer is not difficult. But, if the sample is not deer, exact identification can prove to be a more time consuming and tedious process. To eliminate the need to obtain antiserum for each individual species and aid identification, we undertook an investigation on which species and the extent to which several species may cross react with antisera of some common birds and mammals, especially deer. A study of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) nesting on stockponds in western South Dakota was conducted during 1974 and 1975. Analysis of 10 selected variables at nests on natural sites indicated that distance of water below high water level and percent slope from wetland to horizon, contributed the most to the use of the site. Distance from wetland to horizon and disturbance factors were two important variables measured to determine use of artificial nesting structures. The fish populations of a 193 km (120 mi) section of the James River between Tacoma Park and Redfield, South Dakota that is scheduled for stream modification under the Oahe Irrigation project were evaluated from October 74 to July 76. Twenty-two species of fish were captured in the James River between Tacoma Park and Redfield, South Dakota. The fishes use the area primarily as a spawning ground and nursery for young-of-the-year. Evidence of spawning was found for 19 species of fish. Only a residual population of forage fishes, young-of-the-year of various species, and a few adult black bullheads attempt to …

Biological assays are essentially biological experiments. To compare the potencies of treatments on an agreed scale is generally of more interest than to compare the magnitude of effects of different treatments.

The relative potency, R = a/b, is defined as the ratio of the means of two equally effective doses where a is the mean of A and bis the mean of B. It is an estimate of the potency of one preparation, A, relative to that of the other, B.

A three phase study is used to develop disposal alternatives and cost analysis for algae laden sand scrapings removed from intermittent sand filters used to polish wastewater lagoon effluent. Phase I, Irrigation Technique, explores the feasibility of supplying sufficient water to sand scrapings to leach out entrapped material. Details of removal with amount of water applied are presented. Phase II, Soil Application, tests with lysimeters soil response to application of the algae laden sand material. A dual media filtration study was carried out at the central Weber Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ogden, Utah, to evaluate its feasibility as a tertiary treatment to meet new effluent quality standards. A review of the literature indicated that dual media filters were more efficient than conventional single media sand filters because of the “in depth” filtration achieved by dual media filters. An experimental filter was operated at four different hydraulic loading rates, ranging from 3 to 6 gpm/ft 2 (122.10 to 244.20 1/min/m2), to evaluate its effects on effluent quality. Preface: Computer modeling is an important and valuable tool for water resources planning and management. In recent years many different modeling approaches and techniques have been developed. Some have been applied in the Colorado River Basin. A brief and incomplete search showed over fifty reports on modeling in the Colorado River Basin alone. The main motivation for this Seminar was the indication that (1) much duplication of effort is occuring among Colorado River modeling studies due to lack of information and (2) much of the knowledge now available on modeling is not being effectively applied to real problems. A new scheme is presented for the preparation of 3~(4-chlorophenyl)-5,7-dichloro-l-methylnaphthalene, from which, four derivatives, 3~(4-chlorophenyl)-~-di(n-butyl)aminomethyl~5,7-dichloro-l-naphthalene-methanol hydrochloride, 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5,7-dichloro-~-(2-piperidyl)-1-naphthalenemethanol acetate, l-[3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5,77dichloro-lnaphthyl]-3-di(n-butyl)aminopropanol hydrochloride, and 1-[3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5, 7-dichloro-l-naph,thyl]-2-(2-piperidyl) ethanol hydrochloride, were prepared. These four derivatives were submitted to Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for. the determination of their potential as antimalarial agents.

Iron dynamics in eutrophic systems were studied in the laboratory utilizing gas-water-Sediment phase sealed microcosms. Sediments from Hyrum Reservoir (2.4 percent iron by weight) were placed in the dark to simulate the hypolimnetic regions of a eutrophic impoundment. Iron both chemically and physically was readily available to microorganisms of the aqueous phase because iron in these systems was soluble. In the light microcosms, which simulated shallow littoral regions of eutrophic impoundments, iron was found in higher aqueous phase concentrations than was predicted chemically and physically; this was rationalized through biological mechanisms.
