Effects Of The Sudden Reduction Of Social Enrichment On A Novel Rat Model Of Approach Orientation, Emily Feldman
Effects Of The Sudden Reduction Of Social Enrichment On A Novel Rat Model Of Approach Orientation, Emily Feldman
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a reduction in social enrichment by measuring behavioral changes in the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) in male and female rats of High Approach (HAO) and Low Approach Orientation (LAO). The results indicated that at baseline, both total arm entries and open arm entries were affected by Approach Orientation and Sex. The percent change in closed arm entries in female LAO was sensitive to a sudden transition from high to standard social enrichment, whereas those in the female HAO and both male groups were behaviorally unaffected. The female LAO …
Factors That Influence African American Millennials’ Knowledge Of Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease, Ta'leitheia K. Boutin
Factors That Influence African American Millennials’ Knowledge Of Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease, Ta'leitheia K. Boutin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Findings have begun to identify that millennials have predispositions that significantly increase their risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This quantitative study, grounded in the socioecological model (SEM), addressed a gap of African American millennials' knowledge about CVD risk factors and the relationship of this knowledge to sociodemographic factors. Utilizing Survey Monkey, primary data was obtained through personal connections and social media such as Facebook, and participants were directed to a Heart Disease Knowledge Questionnaire (HDKQ). The requirement to participate was that they had to be African American, born between 1981 and 1996, and reside in Louisiana; the total number of …
Reproductive Justice In Mississippi: A Call For Reform And Acknowledgement, Andie Udziela
Reproductive Justice In Mississippi: A Call For Reform And Acknowledgement, Andie Udziela
Honors Theses
In this thesis, I apply the values of the Reproductive Justice Movement to reproductive healthcare resources in Mississippi to advocate for reproductive policy reform. I begin by navigating the historic racial discrimination in gynecology and how it manifested in Mississippi. Dr Sim’s abusive experimentation on Anarcha, Betsy, and Lucy depict how Anti-Black racism took root in gynecology and obstetrics and was later expanded on by the eugenic goals of white supremacy and the feminist movement through Margaret Sanger and the Mississippi Appendectomy. Then I discuss the current availability of reproductive care in Mississippi to low-income individuals to emphasize socioeconomic and …

AimTo assess student nurses understanding and skills in the application of antimicrobial stewardship knowledge to practice.DesignQuantitative.MethodsCross-sectional survey.ResultsFive hundred and twenty three student nurses responded across 23 UK universities. Although students felt prepared in competencies in infection prevention and control, patient-centred care and interprofessional collaborative practice, they felt less prepared in competencies in which microbiological knowledge, prescribing and its effect on antimicrobial stewardship is required. Problem-based learning, activities in the clinical setting and face-to-face teaching were identified as the preferred modes of education delivery. Those who had shared antimicrobial stewardship teaching with students from other professions reported the benefits to include …

Role Of Ectopic Olfactory Receptors In The Regulation Of The Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Axis, Mitchell R Beito, Sadia Ashraf, Dorcas Odogwu, Romain Harmancey
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Olfactory receptors (ORs) represent one of the largest yet least investigated families of G protein-coupled receptors in mammals. While initially believed to be functionally restricted to the detection and integration of odors at the olfactory epithelium, accumulating evidence points to a critical role for ectopically expressed ORs in the regulation of cellular homeostasis in extranasal tissues. This review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge on the expression and physiological functions of ectopic ORs in the cardiovascular system, kidneys, and primary metabolic organs and emphasizes how altered ectopic OR signaling in those tissues may impact cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health.

Performance Test Of Zn-Astaxanthin Complex-Sensitized Solar Cell: Effect Of Light Intensity On Open-Circuit Voltage And Short-Circuit Current Values, Septiani Septiani, Winda Rahmalia, Thamrin Usman
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The sensitizer is one of the most essential dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) components. In the present research, a Zn-astaxanthin complex was investigated as a sensitizer, compared to pure astaxanthin. The complex with a 1:1 mole ratio between astaxanthin and Zn2+ was synthesized in a reflux reactor at 37–60 °C. The product was analyzed using Proton Nuclear Resonance (1H-NMR), which indicates the presence of chelate formation between Zn2+ with two atoms of oxygen on the terminal cyclohexane ring of astaxanthin. The interaction of sensitizers (astaxanthin and Zn-astaxanthin) on the photoelectrode surface in this study was analyzed using a Fourier Transform Infra-Red …

In this study, a novel adsorbent material, poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-N-isopropyl acrylamide) (p(HEMA-co-NIPAM) hydrogel, was synthesized for the purpose of removing methylene blue (MB) from aqueous media. The synthesis of hydrogel was carefully conducted, and its properties were thoroughly examined using techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption experiments conducted revealed a remarkable affinity of p(HEMA-co-NIPAM) hydrogel towards MB. The highest adsorption was observed when 0.05 g of the adsorbent were utilized, with optimal conditions at a pH of 6.0 and a temperature of 15 °C. This underscores the importance of …

Combining fish tracking methods is a promising way of leveraging the strengths of each approach while mitigating their individual weaknesses. Acoustic telemetry provides presence information as the fish move within receiver range, eliminating the need for tag recovery. Archival tags, on the other hand, record environmental variables on tag retrieval, enabling continuous path reconstruction of a fish beyond coastal regions. This study capitalizes on the combination of both methods for geolocating pollack, Pollachius pollachius, an understudied species of the northeast Atlantic, where declining stocks are raising concern. Essential knowledge of population structure and connectivity between essential habitats is critically lacking …

Cancer cells exhibit heightened secretory states that drive tumor progression. Here, we identify a chromosome 3q amplicon that serves as a platform for secretory regulation in cancer. The 3q amplicon encodes multiple Golgi-resident proteins, including the scaffold Golgi integral membrane protein 4 (GOLIM4) and the ion channel ATPase Secretory Pathway Ca2+ Transporting 1 (ATP2C1). We show that GOLIM4 recruits ATP2C1 and Golgi phosphoprotein 3 (GOLPH3) to coordinate calcium-dependent cargo loading and Golgi membrane bending and vesicle scission. GOLIM4 depletion disrupts the protein complex, resulting in a secretory blockade that inhibits the progression of 3q-amplified malignancies. In addition to its role …
Seagrass Conservation And Restoration To Mitigate Ocean Acidification And Climate Change, Tori Benson, Emi Wagner, Jaeger Reed
Seagrass Conservation And Restoration To Mitigate Ocean Acidification And Climate Change, Tori Benson, Emi Wagner, Jaeger Reed
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
For millennia, various seagrass species have been sequestering and anchoring aquatic carbon into oceanic sediment. The crucial role of seagrasses involves helping mitigate climate change, which emphasizes the urgent need to conserve, sustain, and manage them as part of global climate action efforts. Restoration and conservation studies have shown significant reversal of potential damaging effects, however human activity continues to set back efforts faster than they can proceed. Multiple studies have concluded that there has been a decline in seagrass meadows in previously dense areas; and due to this, surrounding pH levels have declined and rising atmospheric carbon poses a …

There are many different variables that can impact reading comprehension, such as reading level, emotional state, and the content of the text itself. For example, if a text contains inconsistencies (e.g., when a key moment in the text does not align with the information presented earlier in the story), processing slows as readers attempt to resolve the inconsistency. However, little is known about the connection between processing inconsistent versus consistent passages and physiological responses in the body. The goal of this study is to examine whether reading narrative texts containing inconsistent and/or consistent information elicits sympathetic nervous system activation, as …

Modeling And Synthesis Of 3-(2,6-Disubstituted 5-Pyrimidyl) Propionic Acids As Inhibitors Of Low Molecular Weight Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (Lmw-Ptp), Kennedy Bueno, Madisen Carter
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMW-PTP) is an enzyme and a known signal pathway for growth factors and cellular transformation in eukaryotic cells. Our research aims to synthesize 12 new potential inhibitors of LMW-PTP and analyze their inhibitory activity and binding affinity. The inhibition of both isoforms of LMW-PTP has been the primary focus of research due to their potential role in breast, colon, and other cancers as well as type II diabetes. One known inhibitor, pyridoxal 5’- phosphate (PLP), is essential for various enzymatic reactions within the body, such as the synthesis of neurotransmitters, and is therefore impractical …

This article considers the possibilities and limits of reimagining international development policy by taking the values, practices, and worldviews of Indigenous communities as its starting point. Drawing on ethnographic research in Guatemala, we contrast the development industry’s overwhelming focus on economic growth as the gold standard of well-being with the perspective of Maya-Achí groups, who insist that growth and modernization must not come at the expense of the ecology, food sovereignty, or Indigenous ways of life connected to the land. We argue that the Maya-Achi organizations with whom we collaborate offer a philosophy and practice better attuned to the urgency …

Organismal physiology is widely regulated by the molecular circadian clock, a feedback loop composed of protein complexes whose members are enriched in intrinsically disordered regions. These regions can mediate protein-protein interactions via SLiMs, but the contribution of these disordered regions to clock protein interactions had not been elucidated. To determine the functionality of these disordered regions, we applied a synthetic peptide microarray approach to the disordered clock protein FRQ in Neurospora crassa. We identified residues required for FRQ's interaction with its partner protein FRH, the mutation of which demonstrated FRH is necessary for persistent clock oscillations but not repression of …

Neuroinflammation is a recognized complication of immunotherapeutic approaches such as immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment, chimeric antigen receptor therapy, and graft versus host disease (GVHD) occurring after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. While T cells and inflammatory cytokines play a role in this process, the precise interplay between the adaptive and innate arms of the immune system that propagates inflammation in the central nervous system remains incompletely understood. Using a murine model of GVHD, we demonstrate that type 2 cannabinoid receptor (CB2R) signaling plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of neuroinflammation. In these studies, we identify that CB2R expression on …

The color change of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) is one of the important parameter for harvesting decisions. However, human visual identification is prone to errors due to uncontrolled ambient lighting and the far distance of fruit bunches on tall palm trees. These errors can lead to inaccurate harvesting and significant revenue loss. This study introduces a laser remote sensor for non-destructive FFB ripeness assessment. Based on the unique spectral reflection curves of the FFO at different ripeness, laser modules at three different wavelenghts (visible-NIR region) have been employed for the measurement. The photodetector and laser sources are configured …

The Role Of Psychological Readiness In Recovery From Acl Injury In Female Athletes, Samantha Meacock
Bone Bulletin
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is common in sports, with female athletes facing a disproportionately higher risk in comparison to male athletes.1 This susceptibility is the result of a complex relationship between various factors including anatomical, biomechanical, hormonal, neuromuscular, and environmental influences.2 In addition, the unique challenges that females face with respect to sports, violence, body image, and family planning create additional stressors that may further contribute to an increased risk for injury.3,4 Following ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery, these gender discrepancies carry over into recovery as female athletes exhibit decreased rates of return to sport (RTS) …
Shoulder Arthroplasty In Patients With Inflammatory Arthritis: Preoperative And Perioperative Management Of Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug Therapy, Daniel Kwak
Bone Bulletin
Introduction
Inflammatory arthritis is a debilitating systemic autoimmune and inflammatory disease that leads to joint damage, resulting in significant pain and disability. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory arthritis typically associated with advanced arthritic changes of the glenohumeral joint as well as with rotator cuff tears.20 Since the introduction of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy, patients diagnosed with inflammatory rheumatic diseases have observed improvements in pain management and functional outcomes, alongside a reduction in the occurrence of upper limb arthroplasties.16 Nonetheless, total joint arthroplasty still remains common in the treatment of RA.8,14

China: A Settler Colonial Empire?, Kaleb Horne
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
China’s rapid expansion is a growing concern to many in the West, yet the history and pattern of its meteoric rise is deeply misunderstood. Surprisingly, its rise may be similar to that of many Western states. This paper will examine a constellation of China’s territorial and cultural expansions. Furthermore, it will examine ongoing and future expansions of the Chinese empire. It will examine Chinese actions in Tibet, the Yunnan Province, the Guizhou Province, Taiwan, the Belt and Road Initiative, and examine China’s ongoing treatment of Uyghur Muslims. These subjects will also be qualitatively compared to settler colonial theories, as described …

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
Throughout time and history, civilizations have risen and fallen. Empires have cultivated massive amounts of land, only to be torn down by internal conflict. Nations have amassed armies to go to war, only for the tactics of war to switch. The extended history of international relations must be summed up into a single word: deception. Because of this, nations seek to grow their militaries, economies, and cultures in ways that rival others. The competition that the United States (US) will encounter over the next decade is through asymmetrical competition with China. However, the United States has historically been economically linked …
The Importance Of Dialogue Between The United States And North Korea: How Can The United States Respond To The Nuclear Issue With North Korea?, Unbi Choi
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
The nuclear issue with North Korea could create even more danger in currently tense international relations. In reality, a long-standing economic sanction is a factor in North Korea's continued hostile attitude toward the United States. The Trump administration chose negotiation instead of economic sanctions. Negotiations succeeded in temporarily easing tensions between the United States and North Korea. However, the Biden administration put economic sanctions back on North Korea. Since then, North Korea has increasingly cultivated hostility, even more than in the last few years, and is further developing nuclearization. As this example indicates, economic sanctions would have negative consequences. The …

Investigating Vital Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Pathogen Response In Neutropenic Individuals, Ryan Illig
Thinking Matters Symposium
Neutrophils, also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), constitute the majority of innate immune cells. These cells possess a complex arsenal of functions that allow them to detect and eliminate a broad spectrum of pathogens. Neutropenia is characterized by decreased levels of neutrophils in the bloodstream, typically falling below the normal range. Moderate to severe neutropenia can increase the risk of pathogenic infections and without treatment can be life-threatening.
