Weather Modification Studies: The Potential For Creating And Utilizing Ice Crystals In Weather Modification Activities, Kenneth G. Hubbard

Reports

A method utilizing ice crystals to circumvent nucleation processes in cloud seeding activities is discussed in the framework of nuclei activation concepts. Ice, in the form of small crystals, would be a highly efficient cloud seeding materia up to 0 degrees Celsius. The lower limit on humidity would necessitate dispensing the crystals into air that is saturated with respect to ice but no requirement for 100 percent RH(relative humidity) was found. In fact, the lower limit varies with temperature linearly from about 95 percent RH at -5 degrees Celsius to 75 percent RH at -30 degrees Celsius. Preparation of small …

Series Intermittent Sand Filtration Of Wastewater Lagoon Effluents, David W. Hill, J. H. Reynolds, D. S. Filip, E. J. Middlebrooks

Reports

Previous researches have found single stage intermittent sand filtration to be a feasible and economic means of upgrading wastewater lagoon effluent to meet future standards. However the major constraint on their use has been the length of the filter runs. Laboratory scale and pilot-scale series intermittent sand filtration of wastewater lagoon effluents has been found to substantially increase the length of filter runs as well as produce a high quality effluent able to meet future standards. Higher loading rates were round to be possible with series intermittent sand filtration. The operation consistently produced an effluent meeting present Utah “Class C” …

Mixed Integer Programming Models For Water Resources Management, Brad A. Finney, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Trevor C. Hughes

Reports

A regional water quality control model is developed by linking a steady-state water quality simulation model with an optimization model. The water quality simulation model can be applied to complex river systems with both point and nonpoint loads using multiple interdependent pollution parameters described by either linear or nonlinear equations. Twelve water quality parameters can be modeled simultaneously: four non conservative constituents (or conservative constituents if the decay rate is set equal to zero); coliform bacteria (MPN); phosphorus; biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); ammonia (NH3); nitrate (NO3); dissolved oxygen (DO); temperature (°C); and algae. The water quality model is used to …

Effects Of Soil Heterogeneity On One-Dimensional Infiltration, Charles Courette, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1977

Effects Of Soil Heterogeneity On One-Dimensional Infiltration, Charles Courette, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

A parameter study for heterogeneous infiltration was performed employing a one-dimensional computer program. Soil heterogeneity was defined by linear variations of soil parameters. From the solutions obtained, the instantaneous and accumulative infiltration rates were correlated versus the rate in which the parameters varied in the soil profile. The end result being coaxial graphs from which a relative infiltration rate may be obtained by inputting time and the rates of change of various soil parameters.

Waterways and wildlife

A Florida coastal zone management program, once approved and established, will be a cooperative effort of all levels of government and the citizens of Florida. It will establish coastal land and water resource policies, based on realistic goals and objectives, that contribute to the wise use of those resources and protect the options of future generations. It will be a system that is sensitive to criticism, accessible to review and appeal, and flexible enough to reflect changing goals, needs, attitudes and lifestyles. With this approach we can not only treat current problems, but can also avoid future resource use conflicts. …

Feeding Ecology Of Black Sea Bass Centropristis Striata On An Artificial Reef Off Virginia (Perciforms: Serranidae), Ping K. Chee

OES Theses and Dissertations

The feeding ecology of the black sea bass, Centropristis striata, associated with artificial reefs shows seasonal and size-related changes. Monthly collections totaling 520 black sea bass taken from an artificial reef near the Chesapeake Light Tower, Virginia, between August 1975 and May 1976, were analyzed for food habits as revealed by number, volume, frequency of occurrence and a modified Index of Relative Importance.

The black sea bass feeds on the artificial reef as well as the adjacent areas. When food was abundant on the reef, food items from the reef and the surrounding area were consumed. Upon depletion of the …

Hierarchical Restructuring And Catastrophe Theory, Martin Zwick Jan 1977

Hierarchical Restructuring And Catastrophe Theory, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

John Platt's article, "Hierarchical Restructuring" (1970), has become something of a "mini-classic" in the systems literature, much like Herbert Simon's paper, "The Architecture of Complexity" (1962). Concerned with the phenomenology of structural change in social systems, in the personalities and psyches of individuals, and in biological and cultural evolution, it in fact quite nicely complements Simon's earlier emphasis on structure and stability. The purpose of this note is to point out a striking similarity between the images of transformation suggested by Platt, and some of the basic features of Rene Thom's catastrophe theory (1975), i.e. that this topological theory can …

Effect Of Deforestation By The Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth On The Quality Of Streamflow And Stream Productivity Parameters, Martin Ed Hicks Jan 1977

Effect Of Deforestation By The Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth On The Quality Of Streamflow And Stream Productivity Parameters, Martin Ed Hicks

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if deforestation by a recent outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth and logging of such deforested timber has had any effect on stream water quality. To determine this, seven different watersheds of three types were examined. The three types were: undamaged watersheds as controls, watersheds with deforestation and watersheds with deforestation where the timber was subsequently logged. Twenty-four variables were used to determine water quality. Included were seven biological and seventeen chemical variables.

In general, the results indicate only seasonal fluctuations and differences between watersheds due to inherent properties of individual watersheds. Increased …

Bulletin No 4023 - Pasture Plants Of The Western Australian Shrublands, D G. Wilcox, J G. Morrissey Jan 1977

Bulletin No 4023 - Pasture Plants Of The Western Australian Shrublands, D G. Wilcox, J G. Morrissey

Bulletins 4000 -

The use of the shrubland pastures of Western Australia began in 1861 when Mr. W. Burges of the Bowes Station near Northampton sent a flock of sheep along the Greenough River to graze the country where Yuin station is today. Following his example, a number of other enterprising men established grazing areas along the river courses of this harsh and often drought stricken and forbidding land. By 1925, virtually all of the pastoral land of value in the mulga zone west of the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert had been developed, and by 1934, over four million sheep …

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator Of The Cation Transport Adenosinetriphosophatase In Bovine Caudate Nucleus, Paul Culver Jan 1977

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator Of The Cation Transport Adenosinetriphosophatase In Bovine Caudate Nucleus, Paul Culver

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To many investigators, these observations suggested the existence of a molecular “pump” mechanism responsible for the maintenance of the ionic gradients. Extensive research over the last twenty years has resulted in the assignment of this role to the magnesium-dependent, sodium- and potassium-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase, first reported by Skou in 1957. This membrane-bound enzyme is the subject of the research presented in this thesis.

Variation Among Populations Of The Troglobitic Amphipod Crustacean Crangonyx Antennatus Packard Living In Different Habitats I. Morphology, Gary W. Dickson

International Journal of Speleology

Populations of the troglobitic (i.e., obligatory cavernicole) amphipod Crangonyx antennatus living in two distinct aquatic habitats were examined for possible morphological variation. Collections were made seasonally for one year in six Lee Co., Virginia caves, three with mud-bottom pools and three with small gravel-bottom streams. Environmental parameters thought to influence population variation were recorded for each of the six caves. Body length of mature amphipods was found to be greater in the mud-bottom pool habitats, whereas stream amphipods possessed more first antennal segments per unit body length. Variation was also observed in integument coloration; stream amphipods were characterized by a …

A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima Jan 1977

A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Modern and ancient environments associated with Lakes Algoma and Huron were studied according to attributes of stratigraphy, sediment texture, parameters, sediment size distribution, bedforms, and primary sedimentary structures. Results from a computation of wave refraction diagrams and from an examination of the wave climate characteristics indicate that the modern embayment is low energy.

A sediment texture comparison between modern and ancient environments indicates that higher energy pervailed in the ancient environment relative to the present day environment. The cobble and gravel sediments as well as an extensive belt of foredunes preserved in the ancient environment are evidence of this high …

Physics

In an effort to develop useful experimental criteria to distinguish among the viable axial ligation possibilities of O, N, and S coordination in oxidized cytochrome P-450. S (substrate-bound, high-spin), syntheticmodel compounds with O-(Fe(PPIXDME) (OEt) and Fe(PPIXDME) (OC6H4NO2)) and S-(Fe(PPIXDME) (S6H4NO2) and Fe(OEP) (SPh)) donor axial ligands were prepared and studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Ferric hemoglobin and myoglobin were used as model compounds with N-axial coordination. The isomer shifts (δ) and quadrupole splittings (ΔEQ) observed are typical of high-spin Fe(III) porphyrins and are comparable with results …

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht Dec 1976

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …
