The Classical Limit Of Quantum Theory, John Thomas Bruer Jan 1978

The Classical Limit Of Quantum Theory, John Thomas Bruer

Student Theses and Dissertations

This essay treats of the relationship between quantum and classical mechanics. Both physicists and philosophers hold that quantum mechanics reduces to classical mechanics as ħ→0, or that classical mechanics is a special case of quantum mechanics in this limit. If one theory reduces to another, certain formal and nonformal conditions must be satisfied. These conditions are formulated and it is shown that the Wigner transformation can serve as a natural reduction function in a reduction which satisfies the formal and nonformal conditions. Finally, it is argued that this reduction does not aid in solving the problem of providing an adequate …

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate Jan 1978

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted on large field cores to determine the relationship between drainage volume and water table depth for five soils. The measured drainage volumes were less than predicted from the soil water characteristics for three soils, but were in good agreement for the other two. Drainable porosities were calculated from both theoretical and experimental drainage volume-water table depth relationships by assuming that the unsaturated zone is essentially 'drained to equilibrium, with the water table. The experimental drainable porosities thus obtained were less than predicted.

Drainable porosities for drainage in two-dimensions were calculated from experimental results for one-dimension by assuming …

Competitive-Cooperative Processes And Stability Of Diffusion Systems, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde Jan 1978

Competitive-Cooperative Processes And Stability Of Diffusion Systems, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Very recently, the stability analysis of deterministic [12], random [12,13] competitive-cooperative process has been made in a systematic and unified way. It is well recognized that the probabilistic models in biological [7,9,19,20,30], physical [7,20,21,30], and social [31] sciences are more realistic than the deterministic models. In this paper, we extend the stability analysis of random competitive-cooperative processes [11] to the stability analysis of competitive processes of the diffusion type. The stability results presented includes the stability analysis of multispecies community models [16,17] under white-noise excitations. All our results are in the frame-work of the earlier results [11-13, 16-18]. The paper …

Evaluation Of Fish Stocking In Southeastern South Dakota Ponds, Paul J. Peeters Jan 1978

Evaluation Of Fish Stocking In Southeastern South Dakota Ponds, Paul J. Peeters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A mail survey was sent to owners of 220 ponds which had received hatchery fish. Based on 187 pond owner responses, at most 45 (24%) of the ponds still contained the fishes stocked. Pond dryness and/or winterkill attributed to the failure of 121 (65%) of the ponds. A subsequent field survey of 30 ponds identified fish populations of recreational value. Attempts were made to identify important pond parameters that contributed to successful fish populations. Aᵼ (percent harvestable fish), F/C (forage to carnivore ratio), balance (in or out), and a scale of balance were the dependent variable used to describe successful …

Specificity Of Antisera Against Hordeum Vulgare Ribonuclease And Serological Quantitation Of The Enzyme In Tissue Extracts, Steven Bryan Hawthorne Jan 1978

Specificity Of Antisera Against Hordeum Vulgare Ribonuclease And Serological Quantitation Of The Enzyme In Tissue Extracts, Steven Bryan Hawthorne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Specific rabbit antisera against purified seedling RNase I from both a hardy (Dicktoo) and less-hardy (Tennessee Winter) cultivar of winter barley was obtained using a 1 mg injection schedule. Both antisera formed a single precipitin band on double immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis when reacted with the homologous crude tissue extract. RNase antigen from either cultivar was highly cross-reactive with both antisera. Passive hemagglutination inhibition was used in an attempt to distinguish purified RNase from both cultivars. A consistent difference in anti-RNase serum specificity between cultivars was shown, but the difference observed by this method was not sufficient to conclude structural differences …

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin Jan 1978

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin

KWRRI Research Reports

The possibility that pollution might deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and intensify solar UV at the earth's surface focuses attention on the role of solar UV in the various ecosystems at the earth's surface. Previous studies suggested that solar UV might contribute to bacterial die off in wastewater and the studies reported here were directed toward elucidating the action of solar UV in "natural" waters.

It has been assumed that solar UV action on aquatic ecosystems can be evaluated (using proper models) on the basis of the following four independently measurable quantities: I) the intensity of solar UV at the …

Amperometric Determination Of Chemical Oxygen Demand, Catherine Eckert Hutchins Jan 1978

Amperometric Determination Of Chemical Oxygen Demand, Catherine Eckert Hutchins

Masters Theses

A method is described for measuring the low level --5 to 50 ppm-- chemical oxygen demand (COD) of water samples by amperometric titration. The method involves digestion of the sample with potassium dichromate in a 50% sulfuric acid solution using one-fifth the reagents and sample required for the standard COD method. This is followed by an amperometric titration using a standard ferrous ammonium sulfate solution and employing a rotating platinum electrode in a three-electrode potentiostatic system. The titration is carried out at a potential of +0.80 volts versus a saturated calomel electrode, thus eliminating the need for O2 purging …

Ergosterol Effect On The Desaturation Of 14c-Cis-Vaccenate In Tetrahymena, Tiee-Chyau Miin Jan 1978

Ergosterol Effect On The Desaturation Of 14c-Cis-Vaccenate In Tetrahymena, Tiee-Chyau Miin

Masters Theses

Supplement of ergosterol to the growth medium of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis W leads to incorporation of the foreign sterol within cell membranes and suppression of synthesis of the native sterol-like compound tetrahymanol, as well as to changes in the fatty acid compositions of several major classes of membrane lipid. Alteration of fatty acid composition is thought to represent a regulatory mechanism whereby optimum membrane fluidity is maintained when the slightly dissimilar foreign sterol is added into the phospholipid bilayer of the membranes.

The present study, using several different conditions of growth temperature, substrate concentrations and incubation time, and …

Depositional And Paragenetic Controls On Porosity Development, Upper Red River Formation, North Dakota, Kipp W. Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

The upper Red River Formation in North Dakota comprises a subtidal/intertidal facies overlain by three evaporitic sequences of four lithologic units each, labeled "P," "R," and "F" in stratigraphic order. Four porosity zones are recognized in the upper Red River: the subtidal/ intertidal facies forms one porosity zone, and each evaporitic sequence contains another. Each unit in a sequence, as well as the sequence itself, is thinner and less widespread than its preceding counterpart. All strata are laterally continuous across the main part of the Williston basin in North Dakota, but, the porosity zones eventually disappear to the east as …

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor Jan 1978

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

One of the most important game birds in the United States is the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This Asian refugee has provided recreation for untold numbers of sportsmen. Its presence has meant millions of dollars for state game agency coffers, not to mention its impact on local economies. Pheasant populations have fluctuated widely in past years, but the overall trend since the early 1960's has been downward over most of the pheasant range. This decline was caused primarily by loss of habitat due to change in agricultural land use (Mohlis 1974, Dahlgren 1963, Kobriger 1972, Taylor et al. …

New Evidence Supporting The Assignment Of Glutamic Acid As An Iron Ligand In Hemerythrin, Patricia M. Gormley

Dissertations and Theses

The amino acid sequence determination of Phascolopsis gouldii hemerythrin in the region of the proposed iron ligand at position 58 was the main objective of this research endeavor. Generation of a large peptide was pursued by trypsin digestion of citraconylated hemerythrin producing peptide 50-113 for sequenator analysis. Detection of the phenylthiohydantoin amino acid derivatives by gas-liquid and high-performance-liquid chromatography yielded unambiguous sequence elucidation through the region of interest identifying residue 58 as glutamic acid.

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Marsha L. Dutkowski Jan 1978

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Marsha L. Dutkowski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The compound 6-bromo-7-hydroxy-2,2,5-trimethylchroman-4-one (1) was desired for use in a project directed toward the synthesis of two novel depsidones. Since 7-hydroxy-2,2,5-trimethylchroman-4-one (2) was readily available, a number of bromination conditions were investigated in an attempt to find a regiospecific synthesis of 1. However, mixtures of varying composition of 1, 2, 3 and 4 were obtained under all the conditions tried. Final separation of 1 and its isomer 3 was accomplished by a mixture of chromatographic techniques. Structural assignment of the two brominated products 1 and 3 was made by a combination of carbon and proton NMR.

Dialectics And Catastrophe, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The three classical principles of Hegelian and Marxist dialectics, (1) the transformation of quantity into quality, (2) the unity and struggle of opposites, and (3) the negation of negation, can be modeled with the Catastrophe Theory of René Thom and E. C. Zeeman, especially with the ‘elementary catastrophes’ known as the cusp and the butterfly.

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan Jan 1978

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The logical steps performed when doing a factor analysis can be classified into three operation s. The first step concerns the exact mode of analysis and involves the type of centering, scaling and formation o f sums of squares . The second step involves extraction of initial factors. The algebraic basis of the factors are rotated in the last step to obtain a more easily interpreted set of factors. At each step several different methods have been suggested and appear in the literature. Two primary modes of factor analysis are commonly used an d they are denoted as R-mode and …

Mathematical Modeling Of A Sociological And Hydrologic Decision System, Wade H. Andrews, J. Paul Riley, Malcolm B. Masteller

Reports

The general goal of this study was to develop a functional model of the sociological and related hydrologic elements in flood control decision-making. Conceptual system models were developed for the hydrologic system and for the sociological system. The sociological variables were identified as they related to the steps in the process of the model. Following the conceptual decision process model the social elements of the model were calibrated from data obtained from field studies and mathematical equations were developed and tested. Finally simulations of the process were run. After adjustments were made the model was found to function. Several methodological …

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan Jan 1978

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan

CCPO Publications

During a 3-day anchor station in shelf waters off St. Augustine, Florida we observed the effect of an intruding mass of deeper Gulf Stream water. The shelf waters were relatively low in nutrients and salinity while the Gulf Stream waters were high in salinity and nutrients. Onshore currents correlated with increases in nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations.

The advection of higher nutrient Gulf Stream water coincided with high chlorophyll (∼ mg chl a m−3) concentrations and dense populations of Phaeocystis pouchetii (up to 3.12 × 10°1−1). Zooplankton sampling was impossible in the bottom layer because of the …
