Vertebrate Control Chemicals: Current Status Of Registrations, Rebuttable Presumptions Against Registrations, And Effects On Users, Glenn A. Hood
Vertebrate Control Chemicals: Current Status Of Registrations, Rebuttable Presumptions Against Registrations, And Effects On Users, Glenn A. Hood
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 8th (1978)
Man's use of chemical pesticides has received much attention in recent years, reflecting or generating public consciousness of our environmental welfare. The establishment of Water Quality Acts, the Toxic Substances Control Act, air pollution standards, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also exemplify this consciousness which has become a major political force. Although there is some unyielding antagonism against all chemicals used to control pests, there is general agreement that pesticides are necessary for the protection of our health, food, fiber, and habitats. Nevertheless, some pesticides have serious shortcomings, especially toxicity to nontarget organisms and long persistence in the environment. …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
I believe this audience is already well aware of the dilemma in New York State. We have suffered extensive damage from orchard mice over the past three years in New York with some growers losing their entire operation. The pine vole, Pitymys pinetorum, has assumed an Important role as an orchard pest and in eastern New York easily surpasses the related meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus as a significant orchard pest. A recent grower-funded economic survey, initiated by this Unit, and reported in a paper by Pearson and Forsney (1978) points up the severity of losses thru reduced quality and …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Pine voles {Pitymys pinetorum (Audubon and Bachman), or Microtus pinetorum (LeConte)} are pests of significant economic importance to orchardists in several eastern and northeastern states. The purpose of this report is to selectively review the status of pine vole research from the control, biological, ecological, and behavioral aspects, and to recommend the research needed to develop effective, economical, and safe programs for controlling this problem.
Reproductive Patterns In The Pine Vole, Margaret Horsfall Schadler
Reproductive Patterns In The Pine Vole, Margaret Horsfall Schadler
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Reproductive potential in the pine vole is low compared with other small rodents including other species of voles. Age of maturity is late. Males do not reach puberty before 51 days and females before 77 days. Estrus and ovulation are not spontaneous but tend to be induced by mature males. Gestation is long (24 days). Litter sizes are small (2.8 young weaned per female). Litters are produced less frequently because, although females mate and conceive within 3 days of parturition, prolonged gestation insures a minimum of 24-27 days between litters. Only dominant females in a group carry litters to term …

Comparison Of Pine Vole Populations In A Maintained And An Abandoned Orchard, S. K. Kukila, A. R. Tipton, R. L. Kirkpatrick
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Before more effective and reliable control methods for pine vole populations can be developed, it is essential to increase our knowledge of the pine vole's basic biology and ecology. Former research conducted by Estep et al (1978) and Noffsinger (1976) has demonstrated distinct differences in food habits, physiological condition and reproductive activity of pine voles in active and abandoned orchards. A summary of their findings is presented in Kirkpatrick and Noffsinger (1977). Results from these studies has promoted an interest to more completely define population characteristics of pine voles in these two orchard types. In this manner, it will be …

An Ecological Framework For Vole Management, Jay Mcaninch
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
A great deal of past pine vole (Microtus pinetorum) and meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) research has focused upon toxicants as a means of population control. The advent of more and more environmental restrictions on chemical uses and toxicant resistance in target populations has created endless research in this area of vole control techniques. The application of wildlife management principles through biological and cultural techniques could serve as a sound foundation upon which to build a vole control program.

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
In the Proceedings of the first Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposium (March 1977, Winchester VA), ICI was introduced and basic technical information on PP581 presented. PP581 is a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide, with the approved common chemical name of brodifacoum. The compound is also known as TALON™ in the form of 50 ppm (0.005%) grain-base pelletized bait as developed for control of commensal rodents. The proposed trade name for the orchard formulation of PP581 is VOLAK™. Brodifacoum has been seen to possess several novel characteristics in work with commensal and other rodent species, suggesting a considerable general potential for control …

Reaction-Diffusion Inequalities In Cones, Randy Vaughn, V. Lakshmikantham
Reaction-Diffusion Inequalities In Cones, Randy Vaughn, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Recently there has been a growing interest in the study of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations [2,3,4,7] because of the fact examples of such equations occur in population genetics [2,5,12,13], nuclear and chemical reactors [2,7,8], conduction of nerve impulses [1,7,15], and several other biological models [1,6,15]. As is the case of ordinary differential equations [9,10], it is natural to expect that the theory of reaction-diffusion inequalities and comparison theorems will play a prominent role in this study. In this paper, we consider reaction-diffusion equations which are weakly coupled relative to an arbitrary cone. We prove a result on flow-invariance which is then …
Comparative Enzymology Of Glyoxalase I, Christina Margaret Schimandle
Comparative Enzymology Of Glyoxalase I, Christina Margaret Schimandle
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The role of the metal ion in rat erythrocyte glyoxalase I was evaluated. The apoenzyme was formed by dialysis against an EDTA-imidazole buffer. Fluorescence studies of the Mg++- and Mn++-dansylated glyoxalase I's suggest that the metal ion is near the active site of the enzyme and participates in the catalytic reaction. Stereochemical studies of the conversion of methylglyoxal to S-lactoylglutathione with Mg++, Mn++, Co++ and Ni++-glyoxalase I's show that the 0-lactate of S-lactoylglutathione (97±1.5%) is formed. This result suggests that the reaction mechanism is the same with a change …

Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.
Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.
Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

The area lies near or on the boundary of the South- Western and Eremaean Botanical Provinces and vegetation formations typical of both occur. The vertebrate fauna is a mixture of South-Western and Eyrean species and is especially rich in reptiles, 41 species being recorded. Comparisons between …
Effect Of Growing Season On Sprouting Of Blue Huckleberry, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Effect Of Growing Season On Sprouting Of Blue Huckleberry, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Vaccinium globulare, blue huckleberry, was clipped on five dates from May 19 to August 4. All clipping treatments caused more lateral bud release than occurred in control plants. May, June, and early July treatments caused the same amount of dormant bud release. The amount of shoot growth from released buds corresponded to the amount of growing season remaining after treatment. Irregularity between plants in shoot development after the July 8 treatment and the lack of bud development after the August 4 treatment are attributed to the onset of seasonal bud dormancy.

Terpenes For Indirect Selection Of Growth Potential In Rocky Mountain Douglas-Fir, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Possibilities of using terpene composition for indirect selection of growth potential were explored for Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir. Volatile leaf oil analyses were made on 170 5-year-old seedlings that represented full-sib hybrid families, wind-pollinated parental lines of inland origin, and wind-pollinated parental lines of coastal origin. Correlation analyses showed that terpenes could not be used efficiently for indirect selection of growth potential in the inland variety. But, terpenes may be useful in selecting parental lines in programs of intervarietal hybridization.
