Effects Of Sewage Pollution In The White River, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Lawrence D. Willis, Peter P. Brussock Jan 1983

Effects Of Sewage Pollution In The White River, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Lawrence D. Willis, Peter P. Brussock

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Recently there has been much emphasis placed on the importance of leaf detritus processing to the energetics of stream invertebrates. This study was designed primarily to assess the effects of municipal effluent on the ability of a stream community to utilize leaf detritus, and secondarily to evaluate the extent of the pollution of the White River by the Fayetteville, Arkansas, effluent discharge. Physical and chemical water quality and benthos were sampled periodically at one station upstream and two stations downstream from the discharge, and in the Richland Creek tributary. Processing of leaf detritus was also studied at each site using …

Climatology Of The Southeastern United States Continental Shelf Waters, Larry P. Atkinson, Thomas N. Lee, Jackson O. Blanton, William S. Chandler

CCPO Publications

Data from 2872 hydrographic stations have been used to determine the oceanographie climatology of the southeastern United States continental shelf waters. The data were sorted by each degree of latitude and by depth into three zones (0–20 m, 21–40 m, 41–60 m). Inner shelf water temperatures were similar to adjacent land air temperatures, while outer shelf temperatures were moderated by the Gulf Stream. Minimum and maximum water temperatures occurred in Georgia and South Carolina inner shelf water. Bottom temperatures were unusually low off Florida in the summer probably because of shelf break upwelling. Surface salinity was lowest adjacent to the …

Low-Frequency Current And Temperature Variability From Gulf Stream Frontal Eddies And Atmospheric Forcing Along The Southeast U.S. Outer Continental Shelf, Thomas N. Lee, Larry P. Atkinson

CCPO Publications

Low‐frequency current and temperature time series from the outer shelf between Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Cape Romain, South Carolina, are compared with shipboard hydrographic data, satellite VHRR, coastal and buoy winds, and coastal sea level during the period from February to June 1980. Low‐frequency current and temperature variability along the shelf break was primarily produced by cyclonic, cold core Gulf Stream frontal eddies. These disturbances traveled to the north at speeds of 50 to 70 cm s−1 with periods of 5 to 9 days throughout the experiment and produced cold cyclonic perturbations of the northward mean flow and temperature …

Cape Romain And The Charleston Bump: Historical And Recent Hydrographic Observations, J.J. Singer, L. P. Atkinson, J. O. Blanton, J. A. Yoder

CCPO Publications

A review and analysis of historical and new hydrographic data are presented for the Charleston Bump region. An area of doming isotherms is identified primarily between 31.5° and 34.5°N and the 200 and 400 m isobaths. The highest incidences of doming are found off Long Bay (86%), Cape Fear (38%), and Cape Romain (25%). Evidence suggests that low salinity shelf water collects in the doming area off Long Bay in July and that seasonal fluctuations in the depth of the main thermocline layer in this area are linked to Gulf Stream transport and local winds. At times there is a …

Trace Metals In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida: The Copper Story, John H. Trefry, Mehrdad Sadoughi, Michael D. Sullivan, Joel S. Steward, Scott Barber

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Inputs of copperfrom anti-fouling paints presently pose an environmental stress on some restricted embayments of the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. Over an 18 mo period, samples of water, suspended matter, sediments, barnacles, clams and crabs from selected sites along the Indian River and the Eau Gallie River, have been analyzed for copper. Higher than normal copper concentrations were consistently observed in the water column, sediments, barnacles and crabs collected from the Eau Gallie Harbor. Point sources of copper could be directly traced to vessel-related activities. From field data and laboratory experiments on the leaching of copper from anti-fouling paints, an …

Residue Trials, Herbicide Incorporation And Leaching Of Chlorsulfuron, T Piper

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Residue Trials: Breakdown rates have been established for trifluralin at Wongan Hills and Avondale over the past two seasons. The decay curve follows a hyperbolic curve rather than the expected exponential curve with constant half life, probably due to the considerable loss of chemical by volatalization in the first few days, before biological decomposition takes over as the main breakdown factor.

b) Herbicide Incorporation. Du Pont Zl96 fluorescent orange powder at 30 g/m2 could be readily seen when illuminated by 400 yw/cm2 of 365 nm UV radiation, and was successfully photographed on Ektachrome 400 ASA film with a 4 sec. …

Miocene Burrows Of Extinct Bear Dogs: Indication Of Early Denning Behavior Of Large Mammalian Carnivores, Robert M. Hunt Jr., Xue Xiang-Xu, Joshua Kaufman

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Partial skeletons off our species of extinct carnivores have been found in their dens excavated in the floodplain of an early Miocene ephemeral braided stream at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska. Bear dogs (Carnivora: Amphicyonidae) were the principal occupants; their den dimensions and body size are similar to those of living wolves and hyenas. Discovery of this predator community extends the record of denning behavior of large mammalian carnivores to the early Miocene, 20 million years ago.

Mammals Of The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., David M. Armstrong, Robert F. Hoffmann, Clyde Jones Jan 1983

Mammals Of The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., David M. Armstrong, Robert F. Hoffmann, Clyde Jones

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

For the purposes of this book, the Northern Great Plains are defined as the states of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. As a physiographic concept, the northern part of the great interior grasslands of North America is, of course, much broader in geographic extent than the Dakotas and Nebraska, but the three states lie in the heart of the region, and thus the title for this work seems appropriate. Our expectations in writing Mammals of the Northern Great Plains were to provide a comprehensive, yet semitechnical, treatmeat of free-living mammals that would prove useful to specialist and nonspecialist alike. …

Use Of Hydroelectric Dams To Control Evaporation And Salinity In The Colorado River System, Larry J. Paulson Jan 1983

Use Of Hydroelectric Dams To Control Evaporation And Salinity In The Colorado River System, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

The main stem reservoirs on the Colorado River comprise one of the largest and most heavily used freshwater bodies in the nation. These reservoirs (Lake Powell, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu) can store up to 53,590,400 acre-feet of water at their maximum capacities. Nonetheless, local water shortages still exist in some areas of the Colorado River Basin. There is also concern that salt concentrations are approaching levels that could severely affect municipal and agricultural uses. Water shortages will become even more acute as demands for water increase with continued urban and agricultural development in the basin. Water conservation …

Historical Patterns Of Phytoplankton Productivity In Lake Mead, Richard T. Prentki, Larry J. Paulson Jan 1983

Historical Patterns Of Phytoplankton Productivity In Lake Mead, Richard T. Prentki, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

Lake Mead was impounded in 1935 by the construction of Hoover Dam. The Colorado River was unregulated prior to then and therefore was subjected to extreme variations in flows and suspended sediment loads. Hoover Dam stabilized flows and reduced suspended sediment loads downstream, but Lake Mead still received silt-laden inflows from the upper Colorado River Basin. The Colorado River contributed 97% of the suspended sediment inputs to Lake Mead, and up to 140 x 1O6 metric tons (t) entered the reservoir in years of high runoff. Most of the sediments were deposited in the river channel and formed an …

The Influence Of Lake Powell On The Suspended Sediment-Phosphorus Dynamics Of The Colorado River Inflow To Lake Mead, T. D. Evans, Larry J. Paulson Jan 1983

The Influence Of Lake Powell On The Suspended Sediment-Phosphorus Dynamics Of The Colorado River Inflow To Lake Mead, T. D. Evans, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

The Colorado River has been successively modified by the construction of several reservoirs, beginning in 1935 with the formation of Lake Mead by Hoover Dam. These reservoirs are located in a chain, and each one has an influence on the nutrient dynamics and productivity of the river and downstream reservoir. Lake Mead derives 98% of its annual inflow from the Colorado River. Historically, the Colorado River inflow was unregulated into Lake Mead. Regulation occurred in 1963, when Lake Powell was impounded by the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, approximately 450 km upstream. The formation of Lake Powell drastically altered the …

Analysis Of The Surface Polysaccharides Of R. Trifolii Su843 And Its Sym Plasmid Alterated Mutants, Jauh-Lin Duh

Masters Theses

The Rhizobium trifolii polysaccharides from SU843 and mutants--HC843(pBR1AN), HC843, 8002--in which the sym plasmid is replaced, absent, or mutated by transposon Tn5 were isolated. The surface polysaccharides of genetically altered mutants were compared quantitatively and qualitatively with one another and with the parent strain. The interpretation of these results is discussed in relation to the function of Rhizobium surface polysaccharides in the symbiotic process. The symbiotic ability of SU843 and mutant strains is as follows: (a) SU843, nod+, fix+; (b) mutant 8002, roa+ (still attaches to root hair), hac-, nod-; (c) …

Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis Jan 1983

Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis

Masters Theses

Charleston, Illinois, a city located in east-central Illinois, recently implemented a new concept in a raw water system. Due to storage capacity-sedimentation problems in the old Lake Charleston-Embarras River raw water supply, the Charleston Pump Storage Reservoir was constructed. The new system involved building a dike separating the Lake Charleston impoundment from the Embarras River. Water to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir can now be selectively pumped into the impoundment from the river.

Raw water quality in the reservoir was monitored on a weekly basis for a full year from August, 1981 to August, 1982. The levels of …

Reports

Comprehensive planning is an elusive ideal. The practical planner must sort the relevant information from the vast amounts of data that modern technology can collect. The objective of this study was to use the Upper Blackfoot watershed in the mountains of Southeastern Idaho as an arena for developing methods for construction, refinement, and application of indices needed to design land and water management schemes, compare alternatives, and influence the public in their uses of the area. A total of 21 uses were examined on 242 land units of a 160 square-mile area ranging in elevation from 6300 to 9000 feet …

Polypeptide Chain Initiation In Eukaryotes: Reversibility Of The Ternary Complex-Forming Reaction., John Siekierka, Veeraswamy Manne, Ljubica Mauser, Severo Ochoa

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In the last step of polypeptide chain initiation in eukaryotes, the interaction of the 40S preinitiation complex eIF-2.GTP.Met-tRNAi.40S [the complex between the 40S ribosomal subunit and the ternary complex containing equimolar amounts of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2), GTP, and eukaryotic initiator methionyl tRNA (Met-tRNAi)] with a 60S ribosomal subunit in the presence of mRNA, cap binding protein (with "capped" messengers), ATP, and the initiation factors eIF-3, eIF-4a, -4b, -4c, and eIF-5, results in the formation of an 80S initiation complex (Met-tRNAi.80S.mRNA) with concomitant hydrolysis of GTP and liberation of eIF-2 for recycling in subsequent initiation events. However, at physiological …

Classification Of Pseudokarst Forms In Czechoslovakia, Jan Vitek

International Journal of Speleology

The paper is a geomorphological classification of pseudokarst forms in Czechoslovakia/Bohemien Massif and the Carpathians. In the author’s opinion, forms occurring in non-carbonate rocks, are morphologically and often genetically analogous to the forms of karst relief, and are pseudokarst phenomena. They are divided according to their size into macroforms in sandstone morphostructures of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin some types of rocky valleys, water-shed plains and ridges, forming rock cities in some places, mesoforms with six types of caves, sinkholes, rock perforations and several rock phenomena and microforms such as weather pits and niches, lapies, etc.. The most prominent pseudokarst phenomena …

Kinetic And Spectral Studies Of Cobalt (Ii) -4, 4’, 4’’, 4’’’ –Tetrasulfophthalocyanine With Sodium Cyanide In Aqueous Solution, Pablo J. Diaz Cruz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Kinetic studies of the cobalt (II)-4, 4’, 4’’, 4’’’-tetrasulfophtalocyanine and cyanide system were performed under argon and in air over temperature ranges of 294-314°K and 294-324°K, respectively. Two reactions were detected under argon. One was quite rapid and was followed on the stopped-flow apparatus. The results are consistent with the perturbation of a monomer-dimer equilibrium. The second reaction was slow enough to be followed spectrophotometrically on the Cary Model 14 spectrophotometer. The second order rate constant of 0.11 M-1 sec-1 at 294°K has been attributed to the rate of substitution of the second cyanide addition to a dye-cyanide …

The Effect Of Fetal Age On Skin Permeability In Guinea Pigs, Benita Stiles Whitted Dec 1982

The Effect Of Fetal Age On Skin Permeability In Guinea Pigs, Benita Stiles Whitted

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Preliminary investigation has indicated large decreases in fetal skin permeability during the latter half of gestation (Parmley and Seeds, 1970; Treager, 1966). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the degree of skin permeability in fetal guinea pigs at various gestational stages. The test hypothesis was that these skins would show a significant decrease in permeability to tritiated water when tested at time increments through out the latter half of gestation.

In vitro skin permeability to tritiated water was measured in samples from 22 guinea pig fetuses. Gestational age ranged from 30 to 65 days in increments of five, …

Effects Of Wastewater Discharges On Periphyton Growth In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Marsha Korb Morris Dec 1982

Effects Of Wastewater Discharges On Periphyton Growth In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Marsha Korb Morris

Publications (WR)

A study of the effects of secondary-treated wastewater on periphyton growth in Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona was conducted from September 1979 to December 1980. Periphyton ash-free dry weight, chlorophyll-a, dominant species composition, and alkaline phosphatase activity were measured on fiberglass substrates. Substrates were incubated for two to four weeks in littoral and limnetic habitats. Physical and chemical variables and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a were measured concurrently.

Transparency increased with increasing distance from the discharge. Secchi depth ranged from 0.75 m at the discharge confluence (station 2) in August, to greater than 20 m at the most distant stations (stations 9 and 10) in …
