Birds On Modified Wetlands In Eastern South Dakota, E. Nell Brady
Birds On Modified Wetlands In Eastern South Dakota, E. Nell Brady
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To examine the role of bird species (other than Anatidae) in the prairie wetlands ecosystem. Seven wetlands on Waterfowl Production Areas in eastern South Dakota were utilized to measure differences between bird communities in plots with dug brood complexes and non-modified plots. Thirty-eight species of wetland birds were recorded on wetlands during June 1981 and June 1982. The most abundant species included the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris), and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). Analysis of variance was used to test between treatment (modified and natural plots on the wetlands) differences for the dependent variables: density, bird species …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plant preference of yearling hybrids (Hypophthlmichthys nobilis X Ctenopharyngodon idella) was examined under control conditions at the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery, Yankton, South Dakota and under field conditions in two stockwater impoundments in south-central South Dakota. IN feeding trials, conducted in a 0.07 ha hatchery pond, hybrid grass carp selected Najas guadalupensis, Chara sp. and Potamogeton pectinuatus. Ceratophyllum demersum and Myriophyllum spicatum were not consumed. Under field conditions N. guadalupensis also appeared to be preferred while C. demersum was not. Feeding behavior, daily consumption, growth, and survival were also evaluated in the two stockwater impoundments. Hybrids averaging 51g were …
Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Cage Culture And Primary Production In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Michael John Roell
Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Cage Culture And Primary Production In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Michael John Roell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) reared in 1 m³ cages in a South Dakota dugout pond grew and survived as well or better than most cage-cultured rainbow trout reported in the literature. Significant differences (P≤0.01) in mean length, weight, and food conversion, and similarity in relative weight between trout fed 2 and 4% of body weight daily, indicated that the optimum feeding rate was near 3% for this size range (35=100g). Daily rations based on fish size and water temperature need to be developed for trout reared in a lentic environment. The high cost of fingerlings was the limiting factor in …

The Phosphacylium Ion: Evidence For Its Existence As An Intermediate In Reactions Of Organophosphates, Thomas D. Matus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prior to this work, no strong evidence existed which unequivocably proved the existence of phosphacylium ions as intermediates in reactions of this type. It is the object of this study to look into nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus, and the intermediates of these possible dissociative type reactions.
Immediate Effects Of A Storm On Coastal Infauna, Fred C. Dobbs, Joseph M. Vozarik
Immediate Effects Of A Storm On Coastal Infauna, Fred C. Dobbs, Joseph M. Vozarik
OES Faculty Publications
Effects of storms on benthic infaunal communities have thus far been inferred rather than documented; especially lacking are studies examining immediate effects. To this end, the water column and 2 subtidal benthic sites were sampled before and after Storm David in September 1979. There were large post-storm increases in the numbers of infaunal species and individuals in the water column, presumably due to turbulent benthic boundary conditions. At the benthic stations, there were no pre vs. post-storm differences in the density of infauna; however, the number of species decreased at 1 station. There were storm-associated changes in the rank order …
Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs
Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs
OES Faculty Publications
An inexpensive, reliable thermistor device capable of monitoring infaunal foraging activity was built and used in the laboratory to examine effects of temperature on sediment reworking by the maldanld polychaete Clymenella torquata. The worm defecated at least once per hour 55.0 % (12.0 "C) to 88.2 % (5.5 "C) of the time. Defecation rate was linearly and positively related to temperature. Estimated volume of sediment ejected per defecation (0.015 ml) did not change with temperature. Results are compared with previous reworking studies of C. torquata.

Intermolecular Interactions For Phosphatidyl Choline And Phosphatidyl Ethanolamine, Tony Flaim, Stig Friberg, Patricia L.M. Plummer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Intermolecular interaction between pairs of methylphosphocholine (MPC) and methylphosphoethanolamine were calculated using an extended CNDO/2 program. Experimentally determined conformations were used for the ethanolamine and choline groups. In the methylphosphocholine the major interaction was intramolecular, involving the phosphate ester-choline groups, while in the ethanolamine the maximum attraction was intermolecular between the ethanolamine and the phophate ester of a neighboring molecule(s). © 1983.
An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Crude Oil On Two Freshwater Lake Ecosystems, Martin D. Werner, V. Dean Adams, Vincent A. Lamarra
An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Crude Oil On Two Freshwater Lake Ecosystems, Martin D. Werner, V. Dean Adams, Vincent A. Lamarra
Reports
Responses of two freshwater lake ecosystems of the Intermountain West to crude oil impaction were investigated. The research was conducted in two phases; in the first phase effects of crude oil were studied on an ecosystem established in three phase laboratory microcosms (gaseous-aqueous-sediment), which simulated the natural lakes. Notable responses of the microcosm ecosystem to oil impaction included: an increased oxygen demand by the biological community, nutrient immobilization, a reduction in plant biomass accumulation and a heterotrophically dominated ecosystem. The increased availability of biologically degradable reduced carbon (i.e., the oil) and nutrient immobilization, rather than toxic effects of oil on …

Effects Of Cadmium On Streams And Irrigated Agriculture In The Presence And Absence Of Oil Shale Leachate, Douglas A. Selby, Jean M. Ihnat, Fredrick J. Post, Jay J. Messer
Reports
Artificial streams, soil perfusion columns, and potted plants were exposed to 20 ug Cd/l in the presence and absence of unretorted oil shale leachate. High cadmium accumulations occurred in the stream biota, but did not measurably affect community structure or function. The presence of oil shale leachate had no effect on bioaccumulation or ecosystem structure or function. Nitrification in soil columns was enhanced by the presence of the organic fraction of oil shale leachate, but this effect was not observed when cadmium was present. Crop accumulation of cadmium was somewhat higher in alfalfa and radishes irrigated with leachate, but did …

Evaluation Of The Potential For Groundwater Transport Of Mutagenic Compounds Released By Spent Oil Shale, Robert E. Hinchee, V. Dean Adams, Jeffrey G. Curtis, Alberta J. Seierstad
Reports
The major focus of this study was on the potential mutagenicity of aqueous leachates from spent oil shale. Additional mutagenicity testing was also done on raw shale and coal. The Ames salmonella microsomal bioassay was used to test for chemical mutagenicity. Spent oil sahles from the Paraho and TOSCO II processes, a raw shale from Anvil Points, and a composite coal sample from the Wasatch plateau were extracted with water and organic solvents. Only organic solvent extraction of the TOSCO spent shale resulted in a mutagenic response. The lack of mutgenic reponse to organic extracts of Paraho spent shale was …

Eutrophication Assessment Of Mt. Dell Reservoir, Richard A. Hanson, V. Dean Adams, Vincent A. Lamarra, Kyle R. Cook, Dennis B. George
Reports
The degree and possible causes of eutrophication in Mt. Dell Reservoir, a small water supply reservoir in Parleys Canyon above Salt Lake City, were examined with a number of limnological studes. These studies described external (incoming stream flow) and internal (sediment) nutrient sources, general limnology, nutrient limitations, and trophic state. A monthly program of sampling at selected stream sites determined taht one area of mixed agricultural and undistrubed rangeland contributed significant amounts of total soluble inorganic nitrogen. Sediment phosphorus uptake and release rates were determined with aquatic three-phase microcosms. The results indicated that sediment phosphorus mass loadings were small (less …
Adapting Appropriation Water Law To Accommodate Equitable Consideration Of Instream Flow Uses, Jay M. Bagley, Dean T. Larson, Lee Kapaloski
Adapting Appropriation Water Law To Accommodate Equitable Consideration Of Instream Flow Uses, Jay M. Bagley, Dean T. Larson, Lee Kapaloski
Reports
The increasing public interest in naturally flowing streams has fostered efforts to obtain their protection under existing state water laws. In this study, the water laws of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming were examined and compared 1) with each other, and 2) against a set of aleitn criteria, to assess shortcomings in accommodating instream flow protections. It was determined that the appropriation system has the essential features of and ambodies legal principles that should allow the accommodation of instream flow values but, at this time, purchase of existing rights or the exercise of governmental reservation/withdrawal/appropriation …

The symposium was conceived and organized to allow researchers, private industry, consultants, water users, regulatory agencies, and concerned citizens the opportunity to express needs, desires, and concerns about the vast resources of the Colorado River. We found that there were a diverse number of problems confronting the individuals who are involved in the management of this important ecosystem. A variety of …
The Effect Of Waste Stabilization Pond Seepage On Groundwater Quality Of Shallow Aquifers In Eastern North Dakota, David J. Brown
The Effect Of Waste Stabilization Pond Seepage On Groundwater Quality Of Shallow Aquifers In Eastern North Dakota, David J. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The use of stabilization ponds to dispose of municipal wastes has become popular with many North Dakota cities. When managed properly they are an efficient and economical method of waste disposal and may not adversely affect groundwater quality. In order to achieve efficient treatment, the ponds must be built in sediment that has permeability low enough to inhibit excessive percolation of wastewater into the subsurface. Some North Dakota cities have not met this basic requirement in the construction of their ponds. As a result, insufficiently treated pond liquids are allowed to reach the water table, potentially contaminating groundwater supplies. Three …

Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Upper Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat, Bruce Mok, David Wegner
Reports
Executive Summary: A reconnaissance-level study was conducted in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming, during the late summer of 1982 in order to determine the possible importance of the sediment sin exacerbating the blue-green algal blooms that occur in summer in the upper reservoir. Sediments can affect phytoplankton dynamics in reservoirs on an annual basis by delyaing the availability of particulate P associated with spring runoff until late summery, when the warm water temperatures and the light climate favor the growth of blue-green algae. Over the longer term, however, sediments that historically have served as a trap for part of the annual …

Multidimensional Graphical Representations By Chernoff-Type Faces In Color: Assigning Data Coordinates To Face Parameters Through Principal Component Analysis, Hendrik Johannes Beaujon
Multidimensional Graphical Representations By Chernoff-Type Faces In Color: Assigning Data Coordinates To Face Parameters Through Principal Component Analysis, Hendrik Johannes Beaujon
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
A new Chernoff-type face in color has been developed for purposes of representing and analyzing multidimensional data. This cartoon-like but fairly realistic face is defined by 20 parameters, including 4 color parameters. The programming was done in extended BASIC on the Hewlett-Packard 9845C color graphics computer. A method based on the mean pooled variances of parameter values within observed clusters was developed in order to establish an empirical rank order of importance among the face parameters. It was found experimentally that the smile, the outline of the face, and certain eye parameters were among the most important. Using a model …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report regards the research conducted in the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazoles as potential insecticides which are closely related to the known insecticide DOWCO 416R, 2,5-bis(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole. The following compounds were synthesized: 2-(2,4-dichloro-5-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, (2-(2,4-dichloro-5-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole, 2-(2,4-dichloro-5-aminophenyl)-5-aminophenyl)-5-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole and 2-(2,4-dichloro-5-aminophenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole.
From the commercially available starting material, 2, 4-dichlorobenzoic acid, preparation of the above compounds involved nitration, reduction, esterification, preparation of monoacylhydrazines, preparation of substituted diacylhydrazines and preparation of 2, 5-disubstituted-1, 3, 4-oxadiazoles. All these compounds were characterized via NMR and infrared spectroscopy. In addition, this report includes discussion and recommendations concerning the experimental procedures and conditions for the preparation of these compounds.
The Effects Of Impoundments On Salinity In The Colorado River, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker
The Effects Of Impoundments On Salinity In The Colorado River, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker
Publications (WR)
The increase in salinity of our western rivers has been identified as one of the most serious water quality problems in the nation. This is of special concern in the Colorado River where salinity has increased from pristine levels estimated at 380 mg/1 to present-day levels of 825 mg/1 at Imperial Dam. Flow depletions, associated with decreased runoff and increased evaporation and diversions, coupled with high salt loading from natural and man-created sources are considered the primary causes for rising salinity in the river. The urban and agricultural development projected to occur in the basin through this century could deplete …
