The Relationship Of Upwelling To Mussel Production In The Rias On The Western Coast Of Spain, Jack O. Blanton, Kenneth R. Tenore, F. Castillejo, Larry P. Atkinson, Franklin B. Schwing, Amy Lavin Jan 1987

The Relationship Of Upwelling To Mussel Production In The Rias On The Western Coast Of Spain, Jack O. Blanton, Kenneth R. Tenore, F. Castillejo, Larry P. Atkinson, Franklin B. Schwing, Amy Lavin

CCPO Publications

We have calculated an upwelling index for each month over a 17-year period (1969-1985) for a point off the western coast of Spain. We interpret April through September values of the index to indicate the flux of nitrate-rich water in the Spanish Rias. The index representing the 6-month upwelling series has been correlated with an index representing the conditions of mussels grown during that season on rafts in Ria de Arosa. Two seasons represent extreme upwelling conditions over the 17-year sampling period: 1977 when the upwelling index was the highest, and 1983 when it was the lowest. A comparison of …

Effects Of Fire In The Northern Great Plains, Kenneth F. Higgins, Arnold D. Kruse, James L. Piehl Jan 1987

Effects Of Fire In The Northern Great Plains, Kenneth F. Higgins, Arnold D. Kruse, James L. Piehl

SDSU Extension Circulars

Fire has been used inconsistently to manage native and tame grasslands in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of the north-central U.S. and south-central Canada, particularly the grasslands found in prairies, plains, agricultural land retirement programs, and moist soil sites. This has happened for three primary reasons: (1) the reduction of American Indian use of fire after 1875, (2) fire suppression and land use changes that put increasingly more acres under annual tillage since about the same time, and (3) a growing resistance to the use of fire since about 1940, largely due to media overemphasis of its harmful effects (e.g., …

The Geochemistry Of Interstitial Water For A Sediment Core From The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Deyu Gu, Nenad Iricanin, John H. Trefry Jan 1987

The Geochemistry Of Interstitial Water For A Sediment Core From The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Deyu Gu, Nenad Iricanin, John H. Trefry

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Chemical results for interstitial water from organic-rich sediments in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, show a classic picture of biogeochemical reactions in anoxic environments. Interstitial nitrate was depleted throughout the sediment column and complete sulfate reduction was observed at a depth of <9 cm below the seawater-sediment interface. Interstitial water chlorinity decreased sharply with depth suggesting subsurface occurrence or intrusion of groundwater. Ammonia, phosphate and silica concentrations were high showing significant nutrient regeneration. Dissolved sulfide levels were also high and play a primary role in controlling interstitial water metal concentrations.

The Seasonality And Spatial Patterns Of Juvenile Surf Zone Fishes Of The Florida East Coast, Dennis J. Peters, Walter G. Nelson Jan 1987

The Seasonality And Spatial Patterns Of Juvenile Surf Zone Fishes Of The Florida East Coast, Dennis J. Peters, Walter G. Nelson

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Spatial and temporal patterns of variability were examined (April 1982 - June 1983) for 61 species of surf zone fishes (6,611) at beaches in Melbourne and Sebastian, Florida. The three numerically dominant species, Harengula jaguana, Anchoa lyolepis, and Trachinotus carolinus, comprised over 70 % of all individuals. Temporal and spatial variability at several scales were important aspects of the structure of this fish assemblage. Fishes were most abundant seasonally during spring, summer, and fall (2,659) and least abundant during winter (6). Small scale spatial variability was found on beaches adjacent to the jetties at Sebastian Inlet. Both total number of …

Lungfish Burrows In The Upper Triassic Chinle And Dolores Formations, Colorado Plateau, Russell F. Dubiel, Robert H. Blodgett, Thomas M. Bown Jan 1987

Lungfish Burrows In The Upper Triassic Chinle And Dolores Formations, Colorado Plateau, Russell F. Dubiel, Robert H. Blodgett, Thomas M. Bown

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Vertical-to-inclined, cylindrical trace fossils that occur in the Upper Triassic Chinle and Dolores Formations on the Colorado Plateau are interpreted to be the casts of lungfish burrows. The casts, which are as much as 11 cm in diameter and as much as 1.6 m long, were formed by passive siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentation into apparently abandoned lungfish burrows. Locally, the burrow fillings are overwhelmingly abundant, and many intersect and have destroyed former burrow fillings. Superposition of bioturbation episodes has obliterated most primary sedimentary structures. This bioturbation has contributed to the mottled coloration and the knobby-weathering texture of the rocks. The …

Patterns Of Dental Evolution In Early Eocene Anaptomorphine Primates (Omomyidae) From The Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, Thomas M. Bown, Kenneth D. Rose

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

ABSTRACT--The subfamily Anaptomorphinae contains the oldest and most generalized members of the tarsier-like primates and is the basal group of the extinct family Omomyidae. The best and most continuous record of anaptomorphine history is from rocks of early Eocene (Wasatchian) age in the Bighorn Basin of northwest Wyoming where eight genera and 14 species are recognized. Three of these species are new (Teilhardina crassidens, Tetonius matthewi, Absarokius metoecus), and four other new species are described from elsewhere (Tetonius mckennai, Absarokius gazini, A. australis, Strigorhysis huerfanensis). Teilhardina tenuicula and Absarokius nocerai are …

Sedimentology Of The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation Southeastern Utah: Paleoclimatic Implications, Russell F. Dubiel Jan 1987

Sedimentology Of The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation Southeastern Utah: Paleoclimatic Implications, Russell F. Dubiel

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation in southeastern Utah was deposited in a complex fluvial-deltaic-lacustrine system. The Chinle records the evolution of a continental system in response to variations in climate, tectonics, and sediment supply. Chinle strata represent deposits of fluvial channels and floodplains, lacustrine deltas, lacustrine basins, and lacustrine and playa mudflats. These rocks include a variety of vertebrate, invertebrate, and plant fossils, trace fossils, and paleosols that provide information on depositional environments, water tables, and paleoclimate.

Sedimentologic and paleontologic interpretations both support an interpretation of abundant lakes, streams, and marshes with high, but fluctuating water tables for all but …

15N/14N Variations In Cretaceous Atlantic Sedimentary Sequences: Implication For Past Changes In Marine Nitrogen Biogeochemistry, Greg H. Rau, Michael A. Arthur, Walter E. Dean Jan 1987

15N/14N Variations In Cretaceous Atlantic Sedimentary Sequences: Implication For Past Changes In Marine Nitrogen Biogeochemistry, Greg H. Rau, Michael A. Arthur, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

At two locations in the Atlantic Ocean (DSDP Sites 367 and 530) early to middle Cretaceous organic-carbon-rich beds ("black shales") were found to have significantly lower δ15N values (lower 15N/14N ratios) than adjacent organic-carbon-poor beds (white limestones or green claystones). While these lithologies are of marine origin, the black strata in particular have δ15N values that are significantly lower than those previously found in the marine sediment record and most contemporary marine nitrogen pools. In contrast, black, organic-carbon-rich beds at a third site (DSDP Site 603) contain predominantly terrestrial organic matter and have …

Reversible Oxygenation Of Oxygen Transport Proteins, Charles Michael Drain, Barry B. Cordon

Publications and Research

A lecture demonstration illustrating changes in the visible spectra of oxygen transport proteins upon reversihle oxygen binding is reported. The coloration upon exposure to oxygen is dramatic. Deoxyhemoglobin changes from purple to red, deoxyhemocyanin is transformed from colorless to blue, while colorless deoxyhemerythrin turns red. This demonstration illustrates an interesting example of a chemically reversible reaction and is used in the discussion of basic thermodynamic properties. A comparison of the physical characteristics of these oxveen storaee and transn.o rt ~ro- A teins is provided to illustrate the stru&ral diversity associated with these proteins having a similar biological role.

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The compound verruculotoxin, a natural mycotoxin, was isolated in 1974 and found to be biologically active, having anesthetic properties. Two theories have been proposed to explain the biological activity of verruculotoxin. The first theory states that verruculotoxin is not the biologically active compound, but, rather, as a result of metabolism in the body, a biologically active metabolite is produced. The second theory states that the biological activity of verruculotoxin is dependent upon the molecules ability to mimick various co-formations with respect to the spatial arrangement of the aromatic ring and nitrogen atom. These theories are used to explain the activity …

Amphiphile Association Structures, Yun Yang Jan 1987

Amphiphile Association Structures, Yun Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The amphiphile association behavior of Aerosol OT (sodium di-w-ethylhexylsulfoccinate) and p-xylene in combination with mixtures of different ratios of glycerol/water systems was studied and compared to that in the corresponding water and glycerol systems. The presence of glycerol strongly destabilized the inverse hexagonal liquid crystal phase observed in the aqueous system. The glycerol showed more ability to penetrate into the amphiphile bilayer than water in the lamellar liquid crystal phase. The influences of water and glycerol on the organization of amphiphile in the lamellar liquid crystal phase are of the same order.

The gross diffusion coefficient of 1% 2,4-diamino-6-piperidinopyrimidine-3-oxide in …

Microemulsions, Lyotropic Liquid Crystals, And Other Association Structures, Jiafu Fang Jan 1987

Microemulsions, Lyotropic Liquid Crystals, And Other Association Structures, Jiafu Fang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Phase diagrams have been determined showing the extent of the inverse micellar or microemulsion region for several ionic surfactants and some cosurfactants. Hexylamine has been found to be a very effective cosurfactant giving rise to very good water solubilizing capacity at extremely low surfactant concentrations and very low cosurfactant levels at rather high initial hydrocarbon levels.

A fairly extensive study of phase equilibria of the system composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate, hexylamine, heptane, and water has been carried out. The conductivity behavior of the inverse micellar or microemulsion phase of the system shows the percolation phenomenon. Low angle X-ray diffraction …

Fisheries Report No 74 - Marine Resources Map Of Western Australia- Part 2 - The Influence Of Oil On Marine Resources And Associated Activities With An Emphasis On Those Found In Western Australia, H. E. Jones Dec 1986

Fisheries Report No 74 - Marine Resources Map Of Western Australia- Part 2 - The Influence Of Oil On Marine Resources And Associated Activities With An Emphasis On Those Found In Western Australia, H. E. Jones

Fisheries Research Reports

Part 1 of the text accompanying the marine resources maps dealt with the resources and the morphological, hydrological and meteorological characteristics of the Western Australian coastal environment. This subsidiary part is concerned with the effects of oil on marine resources and associated commercial and recreational activities.

Accounts of oil on the seas due to natural seepages appeared in Europe in the sixteenth century on the return of Spanish and Portuguese ships from voyages to the Americas. One of the earliest reports of oil pollution from a man-made source was in 1754 when leakages from wooden petroleum barges were prevalent in …

The Homeo Domain Of A Murine Protein Binds 5' To Its Own Homeo Box., Abraham Fainsod, Leonard D. Bogarad, Tarmo Ruusala, Martin Lubin

Dartmouth Scholarship

Nuclear protein extracts from day 12.5 mouse embryos were used to study protein binding to DNA sequences 5' of the Hox 1.5 homeo box. Embryos of this developmental stage are known to express this gene. DNA binding protein blotting and retardation gel techniques show that murine embryonic nuclear proteins specifically bind a 753-base pair (bp) DNA fragment from the region upstream of the Hox 1.5 homeo box. A fusion protein containing the Hox 1.5 homeo domain constructed in lambda gt11 also binds the same 753-bp DNA fragment. Specific binding of the fusion protein to the upstream DNA fragment shows that …

The Design And Analysis Of Drug Combination Experiments, Thomas J. Vidmar Dec 1986

The Design And Analysis Of Drug Combination Experiments, Thomas J. Vidmar

Dissertations

Past literature concerning drug combination studies is reviewed. This literature has both biological and statistical origins. The justification of the logit transformation for dichotomous responses in a linear models framework is made by observing its similarities to models proposed by others. Using the logistic linear model, optimal experimental designs are derived. Methods for obtaining parameter estimates are discussed as are diagnostic techniques for logistic regression. Two new robust techniques for logistic regression are proposed and compared to a robust technique suggested in the literature via Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, estimation of the median effective dose (ED50) and the resulting confidence …

Late Pleistocene Sciurids From Kokoweef Cave, H. Thomas Goodwin Dec 1986

Late Pleistocene Sciurids From Kokoweef Cave, H. Thomas Goodwin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Three local (Tamias panamintinus, Ammospermophilus leucurus and Spermophilus variegatus) and five extralocal (Tamias minimus, Tamias palmeri, Marmota flaviventris, Spermophilus townsendii, and Spermophilus lateralis) sciurid species (Sciuridae) were identified from the late Pleistocene-early Holocene Kokoweef Cave paleofauna. This fauna was the first documentation of T. minimus, T. palmeri and S. townsendii from the Pleistocene of the Mohave Desert. The 30-ft sedimentary sequence apparently recorded the mid-to late-Wisconsian introduction of S. lateralis into the Kokweef fauna but otherwise documented general taxonomic stability. The ecological diversity of the fauna was consistent with--but did not require--the hypothesis of more equable late Pleistocene climates, and …

The Mechanism By Which Oxygen And Cytochrome C Increase The Rate Of Electron Transfer From Cytochrome A To Cytochrome A3 Of Cytochrome C Oxidase, D. Bickar, J. F. Turrens, A. L. Lehninger Dec 1986

The Mechanism By Which Oxygen And Cytochrome C Increase The Rate Of Electron Transfer From Cytochrome A To Cytochrome A3 Of Cytochrome C Oxidase, D. Bickar, J. F. Turrens, A. L. Lehninger

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

When cytochrome c oxidase is isolated from mitochondria, the purified enzyme requires both cytochrome c and O2 to achieve its maximum rate of internal electron transfer from cytochrome a to cytochrome a3. When reductants other than cytochrome c are used, the rate of internal electron transfer is very slow. In this paper we offer an explanation for the slow reduction of cytochrome a3 when reductants other than cytochrome c are used and for the apparent allosteric effects of cytochrome c and O2. Our model is based on the conventional understanding of cytochrome oxidase mechanism (i.e. electron transfer from cytochrome a/Cu(A) …

ABSTRACT:

Phytoplankton production in the Delaware Estuary (USA) was measured over several seasonal cycles (1980-1985). Seasonal variability in daily area1 production (JP; g C m-2 d-l) was dlrectly related to chlorophyll concentrations in the upper estuary, ranging from a maximum of 1.1 g C m-' d-' In summer to a minlmum of d-l) dunng summer in the presence of low phytoplankton biomass (2 to 10 kg Chl I-'), and in mid-estuary [2.6 g C d-l) during the spring diatom bloom (50 to 60 yg Chll-l). Desplte the occurrence of maximum nutnent concentrations in the freshwater region, highest JP and 90 …

The Fricke Dosimeter As A 1-Hit Detector, Robert Katz, G. L. Sinclair, M. P. R. Waligorski

Robert Katz Publications

A fit to the experimental data for the response of the Fricke dosimeter to energetic heavy ions is obtained using a calculation of the relative effectiveness of a 1-hit detector, from track theory. We use 2 fitted parameters, the target size, a0, which may be thought to represent a “diffusion length,” and E0, the dose of gamma-rays at which there is an average of one hit per target (the D-37 dose), and a new algorithm for the average radial distribution of dose in liquid water from the passing ion. The G value for ions is then …

The Radial Distribution Of Dose Around The Path Of A Heavy Ion In Liquid Water, M. P. R. Waligorski, R. N. Hamm, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Monte Carlo calculations of the radial distribution of dose in liquid water, incorporating energy deposition due to primary excitations and ionizations, have been performed for protons of energy 1, 10, 20, 50, and 100 MeV. By combining these results with earlier semi-empirical formulae used in track structure theory calculations, a corrected analytic formulation has been developed which on radial integration closely reproduces the value of stopping power for protons in the energy range 0.1–1000 MeV. After including a β-dependent ‘effective charge’ formula, this corrected formulation is tested against all published measurements of radial distribution of dose from energetic ions in …

The bench mark date for determining access by April 30, 1985. 3. that the Minister for fisheries establish a representative Government/Industry Working …

Charge Transfer-Oxy Radical Mechanism For Anti-Cancer Agents, Peter Kovacic, James R. Ames, Paavo Lumme, Hannu Elo, O. Cox, Michael D. Ryan Nov 1986

Charge Transfer-Oxy Radical Mechanism For Anti-Cancer Agents, Peter Kovacic, James R. Ames, Paavo Lumme, Hannu Elo, O. Cox, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The proposal is advanced that anti-cancer drugs generally function by charge transfer resulting in formation of toxic oxy radicals which destroy the neoplasm. Electrochemical studies were performed with some of the main types of agents: iminium ions (adenine iminium from alkylating species, iminium metabolite of 6-mercaptopurine, nitidine, other polynuclear iminiums) and metal complexes (Pt(II)diaquodiammine-guanosine, copper salicylaldoximes). Reduction potentials ranged from -0.4 to -1.2 V. Literature data for quinones are presented and radiation is discussed. Based on the theoretical framework, a rationale is offered for the carcinogen-anti-cancer paradox and the role of antioxidants.
