Threatened And Endanger Species Of Wetiands And Waterways In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, And Nebraska, Ann Burruss Sep 1991

Threatened And Endanger Species Of Wetiands And Waterways In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, And Nebraska, Ann Burruss

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Wetlands and waterways, including perennial and intermittent streams, creeks, and rivers, are habitats for many rare animal and plant species. Wetlands in many areas continue to decline in acreage and suffer adverse impacts from conversion and development. Waterways are also under pressure from channelization and leveeing.

This study has two major components. First, a series of databases was developed that includes animals and plant species that are wetland or waterway dependent and found in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, or Nebraska. The databases allow ready access to detailed information on each species and probable locations within each state. The plant and animal …

Lava-Seawater Interactions At Shallow-Water Submarine Lava Flows, Francis J. Sansone, Joseph A. Resing, Gordon W. Tribble, Peter N. Sedwick, Kevin M. Kelly, Ken Hon Sep 1991

Lava-Seawater Interactions At Shallow-Water Submarine Lava Flows, Francis J. Sansone, Joseph A. Resing, Gordon W. Tribble, Peter N. Sedwick, Kevin M. Kelly, Ken Hon

OES Faculty Publications

Hydrothermal plumes associated with nearshore lava flows from Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii were studied on five occasions during 1989-1990 to address the current lack of data on direct lava-seawater interactions. The following enrichments were found in the sea-surface hydrothermal plumes above the active underwater lava flows: H2, 15,000x ambient seawater concentrations; Mn, 250x; and Si, 20x. Water temperatures reached 46°C. Lower concentrations and temperatures were observed in the plumes with increasing distance from shore, with H2, Si, and Mn concentrations linearly related to seawater temperature. Unlike deep sea spreading center hydrothermal plumes, no CH4 enrichment was …

Biodegradation Of Diflufenican Using Anaerobic Microbial Consortia, Velukumar T. Nanjagowder Aug 1991

Biodegradation Of Diflufenican Using Anaerobic Microbial Consortia, Velukumar T. Nanjagowder

Theses

In this thesis I examine the feasibility of using anaerobic microbial consortia from digested anaerobic sludge to degrade Diflufenican, a fluorinated herbicide released into the environment as a result of agricultural usage. The compound is manufactured by Rhone Poulenc and it is an active ingredient of agricultural herbicides. The anaerobic digested sludge served both as a source of microorganisms and as a growth medium. Initial studies were conducted by making a stock solution of 1 ppm concentration of Diflufenican in acetone, the optimal solubility of the compound as suggested in the material safety data sheet is 0.05 ppm in water. …

Binary Peak Enhancement And Structure In Partially Stripped Ion-Atom Collisions, D. R. Schultz, Ronald E. Olson Aug 1991

Binary Peak Enhancement And Structure In Partially Stripped Ion-Atom Collisions, D. R. Schultz, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent experiments have found both an unexpected enhancement and structure of the binary peak in the spectrum of electrons ejected in partially stripped ion-atom collisions. Utilizing the theoretical approach which has been used to elucidate the origin of this behavior, a survey of their manifestation is presented over a broad range of nuclear and ionic charges (C, F, Fe, I and U ions) and impact energies (0.1 to 100 MeV u-1). For forward binary electron emission it is shown that the greatest enhancement occurs for the lowest projectile ion charge states (highly screened nuclei). The magnitude of the enhancement maximizes …

An Improved Algorithm For Neural Network Classification Of Imbalanced Training Sets, Rangachari Anand, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Sanjay Ranka

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

In this paper, we analyze the reason for the slow rate of convergence of net output error when using the backpropagation algorithm to train neural networks for a two-class problems in which the numbers of exemplars for the two classes differ greatly. This occurs because the negative gradient vector computed by backpropagation for an imbalanced training set does not point initially in a downhill direction for the class with the smaller number of exemplars. Consequently, in the initial iteration, the net error for the exemplars in this class increases significantly. The subsequent rate of convergence of the net error is …

Expression Of Biologically Active Human Corticosteroid Binding Globulin By Insect Cells: Acquisition Of Function Requires Glycosylation And Transport, Jayasri Ghose-Dastidar, J. B. Alexander Ross, Reza Green Aug 1991

Expression Of Biologically Active Human Corticosteroid Binding Globulin By Insect Cells: Acquisition Of Function Requires Glycosylation And Transport, Jayasri Ghose-Dastidar, J. B. Alexander Ross, Reza Green

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Human corticosteroid binding globulin (hCBG) is a 50- to 55-kDa serum glycoprotein that binds cortisol and progesterone with high affinity. To map the steroid-binding domain and to investigate the folding pathways of hCBG, we have established an expression system based on infection of insect cells with a recombinant baculovirus encoding hCBG. Infected Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells secrete immunoreactive hCBG at high levels (16-24 pmol per 106 cells per 40 h), and the recombinant protein binds cortisol with an affinity and specificity equivalent to that of human serum-derived hCBG. Thus, this system has the potential to provide large amounts of …

Miscellaneous Publication 28/91 - Midas (Model Of An Integrated Dryland Agricultural System), David J. Pannell, Andrew Bathgate

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

MIDAS is a bioeconomic model of mixed crop/livestock farms in Western Australia. It selects farm management strategies which maximise profit subject to resource, technical and environmental constraints using the linear programming technique. This document provides a thorough documentation of the version of MIDAS developed for the "eastern wheatbelt" region. If you are learning to use MIDAS with the MARG menu driven system, you need to read the MARG manual as well as this documentation.

From early in the life of MIDAS, we gave a high priority to making the data and assumptions readily accessible in documentation and in microcomputer spreadsheet …

Kinetics And Mechanisms Of Atrazine Adsorption And Desorption In Soils Under No-Till And Conventional Management, V. P. Evangelou, W. W. Witt, E. Portig, Mike Barrett Aug 1991

Kinetics And Mechanisms Of Atrazine Adsorption And Desorption In Soils Under No-Till And Conventional Management, V. P. Evangelou, W. W. Witt, E. Portig, Mike Barrett

KWRRI Research Reports

Both soils (Maury silt loam and Sadler) exhibited three apparent mechanisms of atrazine adsorption. The first two mechanisms were very rapid (10 minutes) and were assigned to soil-clay surface adsorption reactions via hydrogen bonding. The quantity of atrazine involved in these two reactions for the 0.5 mg/1 solution atrazine varied, depending on the soil, from 67 μg/100 g clay to 219 μg/100 g clay. The reason there were two possible atrazine sinks in this range of atrazine adsorption was believed to be the presence of two types of reactive surfaces, the clay inorganic phase and the organic carbon phase. The …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We report the first measurement of the ratio of double-to-single photoionization of helium well above the double-ionization threshold. Using a time-of-flight technique, we find He++/He+=1.6±0.3% at hν=2.8 keV. This value lies between calculations by Amusia (2.3%) and by Samson, who predicts 1.2% by analogy with electron-impact ionization cross sections of singly charged ions. Good agreement is obtained with older shake calculations of Byron and Joachain, and of Åberg, who predict 1.7%.

Anisotropy Of Polarized X-Ray Emission From Molecules, S. H. Southworth, Dennis W. Lindle, R. Mayer, P. L. Cowan Aug 1991

Anisotropy Of Polarized X-Ray Emission From Molecules, S. H. Southworth, Dennis W. Lindle, R. Mayer, P. L. Cowan

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Strongly anisotropic, polarized Cl K-V x-ray emission from gas-phase CF3Cl has been observed following resonant excitation with a linearly polarized x-ray beam. Distinctively different angular distributions are observed for x-ray emission involving molecular orbitals of different symmetries. A classical model of the x-ray absorption-emission process accurately describes the observed radiation patterns.

A Track Physics Model Of Radiation Action, Robert Katz Aug 1991

A Track Physics Model Of Radiation Action, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A model of radiation action by energetic heavy ions, inspired by a study of particle tracks in electron sensitive emulsion, has been successfully applied to many radiation effects in condensed matter, yielding quantitative descriptions and occasional predictions. Radiation effects are attributed primarily to secondary electrons. Each detector is imagined to be a collection of targets whose radiosensitivity is represented parametrically. We avoid a mechanistic description of detector response so as to retain the global character of the model. Attention is focused on the structure of particle tracks, on the radial deposition of dose about an ion’s path by “δ-rays,” and …

An Analysis Of Hydrogeologic Factors Affecting Aquifer Vulnerability In Southwestern Michigan, Steven E. Benton Aug 1991

An Analysis Of Hydrogeologic Factors Affecting Aquifer Vulnerability In Southwestern Michigan, Steven E. Benton

Masters Theses

In southwestern Michigan aquifers are threatened by human activities. Parameter/factor weighting systems are used to rate aquifer vulnerability. Hydrogeologic factors affecting aquifer vulnerability were investigated in this study.

Well records, soil surveys, hydrogeologic reports, and partial chemical analyses were used to obtain data on the aquifers, soil types, glacial sediments, and types of contaminants. Data analysis included comparisons of means and medians, factor analysis, and Pearson and Spearman Correlation analysis.

The results indicate that the aquifers in Kalamazoo County are not protected. Depending on the type of glacial sediment, hydrogeologic factors that protect aquifers are clay thickness and the depth …

Micellar Catalysis Of Hydrolysis Of Substituted Hydroxamic Acids With Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Zhongyuan He Aug 1991

Micellar Catalysis Of Hydrolysis Of Substituted Hydroxamic Acids With Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Zhongyuan He

Masters Theses

The work demonstrated the effects of differently located and substituted phenyl groups, as well as aliphatic groups in the hydroxamic acids, on micellar catalysis with perfluorooctanoic acid as the reactive counterion surfactant in aqueous acetonitrile solution.

Kinetic rate constant-surfactant concentration profiles for the decano-, 2,5-dimethylphenylaceto-, 4-isopropylphenylaceto-, 4-phenylbutano-, and 6-phenyl-hexanohydroxamic acids were examined and analysis on the data obtained were reported.

The pseudo-phase ion exchange (PPIE) model has been satisfactorily applied to explain the observed micellar effects.

Further investigation into more appropriately substituted hydroxamic acids is suggested in order to obtain a more complete set of data and further evaluation.

Angular Dependence Of 12-Khz Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter, Christian De Moustier, Dimitri Alexandrou Jul 1991

Angular Dependence Of 12-Khz Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter, Christian De Moustier, Dimitri Alexandrou

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The angular dependence of seafloor acoustic backscatter, measured with a 12‐kHz multi narrow‐beam echo‐sounder at two sites in the central North Pacific with water depths of 1500 and 3100 m, respectively, has been determined for incidence angles between 0° and 20°. The acoustic data consist of quadrature samples of the beamformed echoes received on each of the 16 2.66° beams of a Sea Beam echo‐sounder. These data are subjected to adaptive noise cancelling for sidelobe interference rejection, and the centroid of each echo is determined. After corrections for the ship’s roll and raybending effects through the water column, the angles of …

Rangeland Survey In Western Australia - History, Methodology And Applications, H. J. R. Pringle

Natural resources published reports

The rangelands of Western Australia lie to the north-west of the agricultural areas, extending east to the Nullarbor and north to the Kimberley (Fig. 1). The major areas that are used for pastoralism are most of the Kimberley and the Pilbara, nearly all of the mulga shrublands, plus some of the Goldfields gum belt and part of the Nullarbor Plain.
