Variation Of Superparamagnetic Properties With Iron Loading In Mammalian Ferritin, Richard B. Frankel, G. C. Papaefthymiou, G. D. Watt Nov 1991

Variation Of Superparamagnetic Properties With Iron Loading In Mammalian Ferritin, Richard B. Frankel, G. C. Papaefthymiou, G. D. Watt

Physics

The average blocking temperatures of ferritin molecules containing differing amounts of iron were determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The results imply that the magnetic anisotropy of the ferritin core particles is a function of particle volume. By addition of 57Fe to ferritin core particles it was determined that, at a given temperature within the superpara-magnetic temperature region, the “last-in” ferric ions have average relaxation times that are shorter than those of the bulk ferric ions.

Biodegradation Of Dichloromethane And Its Utilization As A Growth Substrate Under Methanogenic Conditions, David L. Freedman, James M. Gossett Oct 1991

Biodegradation Of Dichloromethane And Its Utilization As A Growth Substrate Under Methanogenic Conditions, David L. Freedman, James M. Gossett

Publications

Biodegradation of dichloromethane (DCM) to environmentally acceptable products was demonstrated under methanogenic conditions (35 degrees C). When DCM was supplied to enrichment cultures as the sole organic compound at a low enough concentration to avoid inhibition of methanogenesis, the molar ratio of CH4 formed to DCM consumed (0.473) was very close to the amount predicted by stoichiometric conservation of electrons. DCM degradation was also demonstrated when methanogenesis was partially inhibited (with 0.5 to 1.5 mM 2-bromoethanesulfonate or approximately 2 mM DCM) or completely stopped (with 50 to 55.5 mM 2-bromoethanesulfonate). Addition of a eubacterial inhibitor (vancomycin, 100 mg/liter) greatly reduced …

Structure, Morphology And Growth Of Biogenic Greigite (Fe3S4), Brigid R. Heywood, Stephen Mann, Richard B. Frankel Oct 1991

Structure, Morphology And Growth Of Biogenic Greigite (Fe3S4), Brigid R. Heywood, Stephen Mann, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Several species of aquatic bacteria are known to exploit the earth's geomagnetic field as a means of directing their motion towards suitable habitats. A feature common to these bacteria is the presence of discrete intracellular magnetic inclusions, magnetosomes, aligned in chains along the long axis of the organism. The size and orientation of the individual magnetic particles imparts a permanent magnetic dipole moment to the cell which is, in turn, responsible for the magnetotactic response. In all species examined to date the magnetic particles have been found to be well-ordered, single domain, membrane-bounded crystals with reproducible, species-specific morphologies. Until recently, …

Processes Affecting The Behavior Of Redox-Sensitive Elements In Chesapeake Bay, Maria Lourdes San Diego-Mcglone Oct 1991

Processes Affecting The Behavior Of Redox-Sensitive Elements In Chesapeake Bay, Maria Lourdes San Diego-Mcglone

OES Theses and Dissertations

Several processes can affect variations in the chemical composition of an estuary, including (1) biogeochemical reactions in the water column, (2) advective transport, and (3) diffusion from underlying sediments.

The purpose of the study was to establish whether estuarine redox reactions are controlled by a complex interaction of processes 1 to 3. Short-term and long-term studies were conducted in Chesapeake Bay. Redox species involved in redox cycling include oxygen, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen species, arsenic and antimony species, while phosphate is indirectly involved in redox cycles. Silicate was used as a non-redox tracer.

For the short-term study, a Lagrangian …

Computer Simulation Techniques To Assess Bias And Precision In The Roving Creel Survey Estimator, David L. Wade Oct 1991

Computer Simulation Techniques To Assess Bias And Precision In The Roving Creel Survey Estimator, David L. Wade

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Fisheries scientists use roving creel survey methods to estimate total catch and total effort of recreational fisheries. Bias in the roving creel estimators had been known to the scientific community, but it had not been quantified. I developed a roving-creel-survey computer simulation model to investigate the bias and precision of roving creel estimators, and estimated parameters for the model based on field observations from the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) fishery of the Chesapeake Bay. The computer model was used to identify bias in roving-creel effort and catch estimators and to demonstrate survey methods that will reduce this bias. …

Community Structure Of The Macrobenthos In Back Bay, Virginia, Michael F. Lane Oct 1991

Community Structure Of The Macrobenthos In Back Bay, Virginia, Michael F. Lane

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A study of the subtidal macrobenthos in Back Bay, Virginia was conducted to examine community structure in relation to sedimentary and water quality characteristics. Samples were collected in August and November of 1987 and February and May of 1988 at ten stations.

Three site groups and three temporal groups were identified by cluster analyses of species abundance. Species composition between site groups was relatively homogeneous and eight species accounted for most of the variation between site groups. A comparison of plots of the biological and physical data in discriminant space suggested that variations in the biological data between site groups …

The Identification, Distribution, And Status Of The Threatened Dismal Swamp Shrew (Sorex Longirostris Fisheri), Thomas M. Padgett Oct 1991

The Identification, Distribution, And Status Of The Threatened Dismal Swamp Shrew (Sorex Longirostris Fisheri), Thomas M. Padgett

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Southeastern shrews (Sorex longirostris) were trapped throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina to determine if any morphological characters could

be identified that would aid in the identification and distribution of the threatened subspecies Sorex l._ fisheri, endemic to the Great Dismal Swamp, the more upland nominate subspecies Sorex l. longirostris, and possible intergrades between the two subspecies. Animals were classified a priori into three groups, based on their location of capture. Animals collected from the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (GDSNWR) and associated bottomland habitats were designated as "fisheri", animals collected farthest from the Swamp as "longirostris", and …

Track Physics Model Of Radiation Effects, Robert Katz Sep 1991

Track Physics Model Of Radiation Effects, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiation effects induced by heavy ions in many materials with diverse end points are well described by the conceptual structure and equations of track physics, first developed for heavy ion tracks in nuclear emulsions. The model describes scintillators, biological cell inactivation and mutation, radiation chemistry, latent tracks in insulators, the response of resists to heavy ions, and other systems. A detector is taken to be composed of small targets whose response to ionizing radiation is principally to secondary electrons. The response is calibrated through determination of the probability of target (in)activation as a function of the absorbed dose of γ …

A Comparison Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox Sep 1991

A Comparison Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Three physical optimization methods are considered in this paper for load balancing parallel computations. These are simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, and neural networks. Some design choices and the inclusion of additional steps lead to new versions of the algorithms with different solution qualities and execution times. The performances of these versions are critically evaluated and compared for test cases with different topologies and sizes. Orthogonal recursive coordinate bisection is also included in the comparison as a typical simple deterministic method. Simulation results show that the algorithms have diverse properties. Hence, different algorithms can be applied to different problems and requirements. …

The Cognitive Status Of Risk: A Response To Thompson, L. James Valverde

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Discussing the role that probability theory should play in Risk analysis and management, Dr. Valverde argues that Thompson's approach puts too much emphasis on the distinction between Risk subjectivism and Risk objectivism in addressing the question, "When are Risks real?"

Parallel Genetic Algorithms With Application To Load Balancing For Parallel Computing, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox Sep 1991

Parallel Genetic Algorithms With Application To Load Balancing For Parallel Computing, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

A new coarse grain parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) and a new implementation of a data-parallel GA are presented in this paper. They are based on models of natural evolution in which the population is formed of discontinuous or continuous subpopulations. In addition to simulating natural evolution, the intrinsic parallelism in the two PGA's minimizes the possibility of premature convergence that the implementation of classic GA's often encounters. Intrinsic parallelism also allows the evolution of fit genotypes in a smaller number of generations in the PGA's than in sequential GA's, leading to superlinear speed-ups. The PGA's have been implemented on a …

Initial Climate Change Scenario For The Western United States, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation Sep 1991

Initial Climate Change Scenario For The Western United States, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Meterology

Observations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in recent decades have shown an accelerating upward trend due mainly to burning of fossil fuels. Physical considerations indicate that observed and projected increases in the concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will lead to significant global warming. Previous authors have followed both empirical and theoretical approaches to develop scenarios for changed climate conditions. The most common empirical approach is the use of analogs of global warming drawn from historical records and paleoclimates. The principal theoretical approach involves the interpretation of output for general circulation models …

Carbonate Deposits In Marine Fish Intestines: A New Source Of Biomineralization, Patrick J. Walsh, Patricia Blackwelder, Kenneth A. Gill, Eva Danulat, Thomas P. Mommsen

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Marine teleostean fish are hypo-osmotic to seawater. As part of a multiorgan osmoregulatory strategy they drink seawater and selectively absorb water and minerals across the intestinal epithelium. Notably, divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2-) are left behind. We report here that in the gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta, the ionic by-products of osmoregulation in the intestine contribute to de novo formation of a carbonate mineral, tentatively identified as calcian kutnohorite. Our data suggest that intestinal mineralization is a general feature of osmoregulation in marine teleosts and that this process is an unrecognized and possibly substantial source of marine …
