The Place Of Farm Animals In Humane Sustainable Agriculture, M. W. Fox
The Place Of Farm Animals In Humane Sustainable Agriculture, M. W. Fox
eBooks
It is not yet widely recognized that the livestock industry has become a major threat to the world's economy, the environment, consumer health, and the food security of nations and generations to come. Farm animals do have a place in ecologically sound agriculture, but, as will be shown, they have not been properly integrated either in the United States or in other developed and less-developed nations of the world.

Cultural Diversity & Adaptation: The Archaic, Anasazi, & Navajo Occupation Of The Upper San Juan Basin, United States Bureau Of Land Management
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Recent work in the upper San Juan Basin has more than doubled the number of known, as well as excavated, sites. Without exception, this work has modified and expanded long-held views of the PaleoIndian, Archaic, Anasazi, and Navajo people who inhabited the area. The papers presented in this volume reflect these changes and represent the cutting edge of southwestern archaeology.

Effects Of Seeder Design And Seed Placement On Seedling Size And Cull Rates At Western Forest Nurseries, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Nursery plots sown with the Summit Precision Seeder and the Oyjord Seeder were compared with plots oversown and hand thinned to desired spacings. We studied 26 seedlots of nine conifer species at five Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, nurseries. Results varied with nursery, species, and seed characteristics. Thinned plots produced less clumping and fewer gaps between seedlings, but showed little or no difference in seedling size, nor in the number of acceptable seedlings.
A Partial Glossary Of Elk Management Terms, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
A Partial Glossary Of Elk Management Terms, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
This glossary helps define terms that have been misused during forest planning. Terms that were developed from research on the influences of timber sales and roads during the summer months have been used inappropriately when referring to winter range, hunting seasons, and other conditions. The glossary is based on the results of an "Elk Management Terminology Workshop" held at the University of Montana's Lubrecht Experimental Forest on April 3-4, 1990.
Plant Community Diversity After Herbicide Control Of Spotted Knapweed, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Plant Community Diversity After Herbicide Control Of Spotted Knapweed, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Herbicides and Pesticides
Herbicides were applied to four west-central Montana sites with light to moderate spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa Lam.) infestations. Althought knapweed suppression was high, 2 years after the spraying the communities were not converted to grass monocultures. No large declines in plant diversity were caused by the herbicides, and small depressions were probably transitory. By the third year, diversity had increased.

Calculation Of Barriers To Proton Transfer Using Multiconfiguration Self‐Consistent‐Field Methods. I. Effects Of Localization, K. Luth, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The usefulness of multiconfiguration self‐consistent‐field (MCSCF) calculations in computing correlated proton transfer potentials is investigated for the systems HF2−, H7N2+, H3O2−, and H5O2+. In deciding whether to include particular molecular orbitals, it is important to consider the balance of electron density between the donor and acceptor groups and the interactions that are incorporated in the orbitals. Only orbitals which have the proper symmetry to interact with the transferring hydrogen need be included in the MCSCF active space. Reasonable transfer barriers are obtained …

Land Resources Study Of The Carnarvon Land Conservation District And Part Of Boolathana Station, Western Australia, M R. Wells, C D M Keating, J A. Bessell-Browne
Land resources series
A survey of the land resources of 36,343 ha covering the Carnarvon Land Conservation District and an adjoining portion of Boolathana station was conducted to assist future land use planning and management. This report describes the soil, landform and vegetation conditions of land units shown on an accompanying 1:50,000 scale map. These land units are components of land systems previously mapped at 1:250,000 scale for the Carnarvon Basin by Payne et al. (1987). As part of the study, further, more detailed land resource mapping and land capability assessments were conducted at specific locations. Land use planning and management considerations arising …
Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of Three Subfossil Coleopteran Faunas From The Toklat River Drainage, Central Alaska, Lisa L. Churchill
Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of Three Subfossil Coleopteran Faunas From The Toklat River Drainage, Central Alaska, Lisa L. Churchill
Senior Scholar Papers
Three sediment samples were collected from exposures along the Tok lat River. Central Alaska and analyzed for subfossil Coleopteran remains. Two samples arc Holocene in age (650 ± b.p .. and submodem) and the other is believed to be laic Pleistocene in age, based on stratigraphic interpretations. The Pleistocene fauna was representative of a tundra environment adjacent to a fluvial system. The older Holocene sample was indicative of a point bar deposit wi rh sl ightly moister conditions. although rhe occurrence of several tundra species was also noted. These tundra species were evidently able to make the transition from their …

Fractal Character Of Two-Dimensional Fluid Mixing At Both Continuum And Atomic Levels, H. Z. Cao, John R. Hardy, R. W. Douglass, P. T. Dawkins, Steven Dunbar
John R. Hardy Papers
Studies in two dimensions have been made of the evolution of an initially linear interface between two liquid areas by both continuum hydrodynamics and molecular dynamics. It was found that at both levels the interface evolves into a fractal curve. While the limiting fractal dimensionalities (D) of the continuum and molecular interfaces differ, this difference is no greater than that that can be induced in the hydrodynamic results by marked changes in the initial conditions and/or fluid parameters. There is, however, a marked qualitative difference in the initial values of D. This is discussed and shown to …

The Distribution Of Amphipods In Southeastern Minnesota And Their Relation To Water Quality And Land Use, James A. Muck, Raymond M. Newman
The Distribution Of Amphipods In Southeastern Minnesota And Their Relation To Water Quality And Land Use, James A. Muck, Raymond M. Newman
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The distribution of the amphipods Gammarus pseudolimnaeus and Hyalella azteca was determined from 97 designated trout streams in Minnesota, along with temperature, conductivity, and nitrate levels. Streams were classified into 4 land use/geology groups. G. pseudolimnaeus was found in 11 counties and at 123 of 168 sites in 83 of the 97 streams sampled. Hyalella azteca was found in 7 counties at 26 sites m 21 streams. Spearman rank correlations showed a high degree of correlation between nitrate (range: 0-11 mg N/L), conductivity (range: 325-870 μS/cm), and geology. The relative abundance of G. pseudolimnaeus was negatively correlated with nitrate, geology …

13.2.15. Human Disturbances Of Waterfowl: Causes, Effects, And Management, Carl E. Korschgen, Robert B. Dahlgren
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Human disturbances of waterfowl can be intentional or unintentional. They may result from overt or directed activities or may be ancillary to activities not initially thought to be of concern to birds. Some of these disturbances are manifested by alertness, fright (obvious or unapparent), flight, swimming, disablement, or death. Therefore, persons responsible for waterfowl management areas should be aware of the problems from human disturbance and should design management and facilities that increase public appreciation of waterfowl.
In the last 20 years, the intensity of water-based recreation increased drastically, especially on inland waters. Waterfowl are wary, seeking refuge from all …

Overview Of The Symposium On Walleye Stocks And Stocking, Daryl G. Ellison, William G. Franzin
Overview Of The Symposium On Walleye Stocks And Stocking, Daryl G. Ellison, William G. Franzin
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Rising angler interest in walleye Stizostedion vitreum, a general decline in natural recruitment in some waters, and increasing demands for stocking have produced a need to evaluate stocking strategies. Such evaluations were the subject of the Walleye Stocks and Stocking Symposium summarized herein. Among walleye stocking evaluations reported in the symposium, 32% of fry stockings, 32% of small-fingerling stockings, and 50% of advanced-fingerling stockings were considered successful. Further improvement in stocking success requires research into the factors that affect survival. Matching stocking times and places to appropriate food resources appears to be a key element in successful introductions of …

Nebraska's Vanishing Species, Greg Wingfield
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Nebraskans are blessed with a rich heritage - friendly, hard-working people, unique landforms and diverse natural resources, including native species of plants and animals. Unfortunately, an irreplaceable part of this heritage, our threatened and endangered species, is vanishing.
Simply stated, a threatened species is one likely to become endangered. An endangered species is one so rare that it is in danger of becoming extinct. Extinction is the loss of a species from this world.

Sea Turtle Conservation Program, Broward County, Fl 1992 Report, Curtis M. Burney, Catherine A. Mattison
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.
Since these statutes strictly forbid any disturbance …

New Yellow Serradella Varieties For Low Rainfall Pastures, Clinton Revell
New Yellow Serradella Varieties For Low Rainfall Pastures, Clinton Revell
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Large areas of acidic, sandy soils in Western Australia's low and medium rainfall, wheatsheep areas are suited to the pasture legume, yellow serradella.
In the past, a lack of varieties with suitable maturity has limited the use of this species.
New varieties developed in Western Australia and significantly earlier in maturity than traditional types can now extend the use of yellow serradella into these regions.
