The Effects Of Chromated Copper-Arsenate (Cca) Pressure-Treated Wood On Local Sediments And Benthos In A Freshwater Lake, William A. Romeo Jan 1996

The Effects Of Chromated Copper-Arsenate (Cca) Pressure-Treated Wood On Local Sediments And Benthos In A Freshwater Lake, William A. Romeo

Theses

This study looked at the sediment and benthic organism effects of exposure to a Chromated Copper-Arsenate (CCA) treated wood bulkhead in a lake environment with respect to 1) the leaching and accumulation of chromium, copper and arsenic in the nearby sediments, 2) accumulation of these metals in local benthic organisms and 3) the effects of these metals on the local benthic community structure. Sediment samples, taken at regular distances away from a CCA bulkhead and three reference areas in a freshwater lake in Wayne, NJ, were sieved to remove the fine particle fraction (<70µm) which was then analyzed for the metals of concern. Benthic organisms were sampled at the same locations, enumerated, identified, dried and also analyzed for the metals in question. Analysis of sediment metal concentrations revealed high levels of copper at all sampling locations. This was attributed to the annual addition and accumulation Of CuS04 added to the lake. There …

We present a new method that applies resonant‐two‐photon ionization to generate reactant ions selectively in the source of a high‐pressure mass spectrometer (R2PI‐HPMS) for kinetic and equilibrium studies. Applications to reactions that would be obscured otherwise in a complex system are illustrated in mixtures of benzene with polar solvent molecules (S). We observe a novel type of proton transferreactions from C6H6 +• to two S molecules where S=CH3CN, CH3OH, C2H5OH and CH3COOC2H5, and from C6H5CH3 +• to two …

The radical complex (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3 reacts with small, neutral, monodentate Lewis bases (PMe3, PMe2Ph, P(OMe)3) in THF at −78 °C (PMe2Ph reacts at ambient temperature) to yield the monomeric substitution products (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)2L·THF as thermally stable solids. Electrochemical and spectroscopic data are provided. An X-ray crystal structure of the hemisolvate (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)2PMe3·0.5THF was obtained. Frozen-solution ESR spectra of (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)2L in toluene are comparable to those of other low-spin d5 …

Evaluating Bighorn Habitat: A Landscape Approach, William C. Dunn Jan 1996

Evaluating Bighorn Habitat: A Landscape Approach, William C. Dunn

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This technical note describes a method that incorporates a landscape approach with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIs) to measure habitat and impacts for Rocky Mountain and desert bighorn sheep and to rank potential transplant sites. A landscape approach, in which habitat is viewed from a large-scale perspective as an assemblage of patches, is used because: (1) bighorn habitat is naturally patchy due to the affinity of bighorn for terrain that is both open and mountainous; (2) fragmentation (i.e., increased patchiness) often is the most severe consequence of human disturbance; and (3) the proximity and distribution of neighboring bighorn …

The Lipooligosaccharides Of Haemophilus Ducreyi Are Highly Sialylated, William Melaugh, A A. Campagnari, B W. Gibson

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The major lipooligosaccharides of the sexually transmitted pathogen Haemophilus ducreyi 35000 have been previously found to terminate in N-acetyllactosamine and sialyl-N-acetyllactosamine, Neu5Ac alpha 2-->3Gal beta 1-->4GlcNAc (W. Melaugh, N. J. Phillips, A. A. Campagnari, M. V. Tullius, and B. W. Gibson, Biochemistry 33: 13070-13078, 1994). In this study, mass spectrometry and composition analyses have shown that the lipooligosaccharides from three other H. ducreyi strains also contain N-acetyllactosamine and are highly sialylated (approximately 30 to 50%), although one African strain was found to contain neither of these structural features.

Novel Algorithms For Remote Sensing Of Chlorophyll Content In Higher Plant Leaves, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Mark N. Merzlyak, Yuri Grits

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The general features of reflectance spectra of higher plant leaves are considered with special reference to remote sensing of chlorophyll. Wavelengths with maximum sensitivity to chlorophyll content were found in the wide spectral range from 550 to 630 nm and near 700 nm. The wavelength of the red edge position of the reflectance spectrum correlated very closely with the reflectance at 550 and 700 nm. The ratios of reflectances in the near infra-red range of the spectrum (above 750 nm) to that at 700 nm RNIR/R700 and RNIR/R550 were directly proportional to the leaves' …

Track Structure And Radiation Transport Model For Space Radiobiology Studies, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, Robert Katz, W. Atwell, G. D. Badhwar, M. R. Shavers Jan 1996

Track Structure And Radiation Transport Model For Space Radiobiology Studies, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, Robert Katz, W. Atwell, G. D. Badhwar, M. R. Shavers

Robert Katz Publications

Radiobiology experiments performed in space are deemed necessary for validation of risk-assessment methods. The understanding of space radiobiology experiments must combine knowledge of the space radiation environment, radiation transport, and models of biological response. The heavy ion transport code HZETRN has recently been combined with improved models of the galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and extensive comparisons made to measurements on the space shuttle with a tissue equivalent, proportional counter. HZETRN was also coupled with track-structure models of biological damage from heavy ions. Track-structure calculations using improved models of the radial dose distribution around the path of heavy ions provide a …

Unsupervised Algorithms For Learning Emergent Spatio-Temporal Correlations, Chaitanya Tumuluri Jan 1996

Unsupervised Algorithms For Learning Emergent Spatio-Temporal Correlations, Chaitanya Tumuluri

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Many applications require the extraction of spatiotemporal correlations among dynamically emergent features of non-stationary distributions. In such applications it is not possible to obtain an a priori analytical characterization of the emergent distribution. This paper extends the Growing Cell Structures (GCS) network and presents two novel (GIST and GEST) networks, which combine unsupervised feature-extraction and Hebbian learning, for tracking such emergent correlations. The networks were successfully tested on the challenging Data Mapping problem, using an execution driven simulation of their implementation in hardware. The results of the simulations show the successful use of the GIST and GEST networks for extracting …

Factors Affecting Interannual Movements Of Snowy Plovers, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas C. Edwards Jr. Jan 1996

Factors Affecting Interannual Movements Of Snowy Plovers, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas C. Edwards Jr.

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We studied the interannual movements of 361 individually color-banded adult Snowy Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) at Great Salt Lake, Utah from 1990 to 1993. In northern Utah, Snowy Plovers nested in a dynamic environment; suitable breeding habitat declined by 50% at two study areas in four years. Male Snowy Plovers were more site faithful than females; 40% of males exhibited fidelity compared with 26% of females (P < 0.01). However, as the amount of available suitable nesting habitat declined, male site fidelity diminished, whereas female fidelity remained relatively constant. We found strong evidence that female site fidelity was affected by nesting success in the previous year. Females that nested unsuccessfully were less likely than successful females to exhibit site fidelity the following year; males did not exhibit this nest-success bias. In addition, unsuccessful females breeding at sites with high densities of nests tended to disperse the following year, whereas male site fidelity did not appear to be affected by either a study site's overall nesting success the previous year or a study site's nest density the previous year. Female avoidance of areas with high densities of nests may be an antipredator strategy. Snowy Plovers in northern Utah have biparental incubation duties, but only males care for broods. Familiarity with brood-rearing areas was one plausible explanation for male-biased fidelity. However, we could not eliminate an alternative hypothesis that both focal study sites represented scarce breeding areas due to the presence of freshwater, and male Snowy Plovers preferred to use the same areas rather than disperse. We propose that more landscape-level studies are needed to address questions concerning local and regional movement patterns.

The Calculation Of Radial Dose From Heavy Ions: Predictions Of Biological Action Cross Sections, Robert Katz, Francis A. Cucinotta, C. X. Zhang Jan 1996

The Calculation Of Radial Dose From Heavy Ions: Predictions Of Biological Action Cross Sections, Robert Katz, Francis A. Cucinotta, C. X. Zhang

Robert Katz Publications

The track structure model of heavy ion cross sections was developed by Katz and co-workers in the 1960s. In this model the action cross section is evaluated by mapping the dose-response of a detector to γ rays (modeled from biological target theory) onto the radial dose distribution from 6 rays about the path of the ion. This is taken to yield the radial distribution of probability for a "hit" (an interaction leading to an observable end-point). Radial integration of the probability yields the cross section. When different response from ions of different Z having the same stopping power is observed …

Space-Based Genetic Cryoconservation Of Endangered Species, Michael Noah Mautner Jan 1996

Space-Based Genetic Cryoconservation Of Endangered Species, Michael Noah Mautner

Chemistry Publications

Genetic materials of endangered species must be maintained, for cryoconservation, permanently near liquid nitrogen temperatures below 77 K. Due to the instability of human institutions, permanent safety is best provided at storage sites that maintain passively the needed low temperatures, and provide barriers to access. The required conditions are available in permanently shaded polar lunar craters with equilibrium temperatures of 8 to 40 K, on the moons of Saturn, and unshielded storage satellites. A genetic depository can be incorporated readily into planned lunar programmes.

A Relationship Between River Modification And Species Richness Of Freshwater Turtles In Iowa, Terry J. Vandewalle, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Comparisons were made of turtle populations in Red Rock Reservoir and the major rivers of the Mississippi River and Missouri River damage systems in Iowa. Of the inland rivers of the Mississippi drainage examined in this study, the Des Moines River had the least amount of remaining turtle habitat. Number of turtle species ranged from five in the Des Moines River to 11 in the Mississippi River, but only three species were found in Red Rock Reservoir. In the Missouri drainage, number of turtle species ranged from three in both the Little Sioux and Nishnabotna rivers to five in the …

A Monte Carlo Study Of Methanol Clusters (Ch3oh)N, N=5-256, D. Wright, M. S. El-Shall

Chemistry Publications

The thermodynamic and structural properties of methanol clusters (CH3OH) N , N=5–15, 20, 30, 60, 128, 256 and the bulk liquid have been investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. Calculated properties as a function of size include electrostatic and dispersive contributions to the configurational energy, configurational heat capacities, fractal dimension, density profiles, order parameters characterizing dipole and bond vector orientation, and the Lindemann index. The clusterheat capacities as a function of N possess an interior maximum near N=128 and converge to the bulk value from above. Monocyclic, semiplanar structures are found to persist at liquidlike temperatures up to …

Integration Of Natural Hazard Mitigation Into Municipal Harbor Management Plans In The United States, Frank J. Mcneilly Jan 1996

Integration Of Natural Hazard Mitigation Into Municipal Harbor Management Plans In The United States, Frank J. Mcneilly

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Harbor management planning is a relatively new concept in this country. What is believed to be the first municipal level harbor management plan (HMP) in the United States originated from a need to resolve a problem of encroachments on a Federal navigation channel in Connecticut. This method of harbor planning was soon recognized as an effective management tool and was used as a model for other coastal communities in the Northeast. While early HMPs primarily focused on mooring management, today's plans address many more harbor issues. The Coastal Zone Management Act was intended to form a national coastal zone management …

Public Health Hazards Associated With The Consumption Of Molluscan Shellfish In The State Of Rhode Island, Jeffrey F. Nussbaum Jan 1996

Public Health Hazards Associated With The Consumption Of Molluscan Shellfish In The State Of Rhode Island, Jeffrey F. Nussbaum

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The principal objective of this thesis was to descriptively and empirically assess shellfish consumption hazards in the state of Rhode Island and to evaluate the use of a shellfish hazard warning label to modify unsafe consumptive behaviors. To accomplish this task, three research problems were examined using a survey instrument. The survey instrument was a questionnaire which included both closed and open-ended questions. The survey questions were designed to identify four primary research variables; shellfish consumptive behaviors, consumer knowledge of shellfish hazards and related government advisories, perceptions of risk regarding personal shellfish consumption, and response to warning label information. The …

The Cumulative Impacts Of Management Decisions On Nitrogen Loading To The Rhode Island Salt Ponds, Laura M. Ernst Jan 1996

The Cumulative Impacts Of Management Decisions On Nitrogen Loading To The Rhode Island Salt Ponds, Laura M. Ernst

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Calculations and measurements of nitrogen in groundwater, stream flow and atmospheric deposition were used to see if the cumulative impacts of management decisions over a fifteen year period of time resulted in measurable changes in nitrogen loading to six of the salt ponds on the south shore of Rhode Island. The changes in the source and transmission of nitrogen were tested by comparing calculated and measured nitrogen data from 1980 and 1995. The calculated method included a nitrogen budget based on land-use and literature values for nitrogen loss to groundwater. The second method compared concentrations of nitrogen in groundwater taken …

Applying The Concept Of Recreational Specialization To Rhode Island Alliance Anglers, Eric Asadorian Jan 1996

Applying The Concept Of Recreational Specialization To Rhode Island Alliance Anglers, Eric Asadorian

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Many recreationally popular marine species of fish are at or near historic lows in terms of their overall numbers. Many of these species, such as cod, summer flounder, winter flounder, and bluefish, are also commercially valuable. Fishery managers must be able to make allocation and management decisions that both protect the resource and maintain user satisfaction. The basis for achieving this goal lies in the understanding of what the users expectations, satisfactions and perceptions are related to their marine recreational fishing experience. It is often the case that a population of anglers are managed as a homogeneous group, with similar …
