Oncogenic Ret Receptors Display Different Autophosphorylation Sites And Substrate Binding Specificities, Xin Liu, Quinn Vega, Ruth A. Decker, Akhilesh Pandey, Carolyn A. Worby, Jack E. Dixon

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The c-ret proto-oncogene encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase which plays an important role in neural crest as well as kidney development. Genetic studies have demonstrated that germ line mutations in the ret oncogene are the direct cause of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2A and 2B, familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (FMTC), and Hirschsprung's disease. However, despite the large body of genetic and biological evidence suggesting the importance of RET in development and neoplastic processes, the signal transduction mechanisms of RET remain unknown. To begin to understand the molecular mechanisms of the disease states caused by mutations in RET, the patterns of …

Temporal Variability Of Organic C And Nitrate In A Shallow Aquifer, D. E. Clay, S. A. Clay, T. B. Moorman, K. Brix-Davis, K. A. Scholes, A. R. Bender

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

The loading of organic substrates into shallow aquifers may follow seasonal cycles, which will impact the transport and fate of agrichemicals. The objective of this research was to measure temporal changes in the groundwater dissolved organic C (DOC) and nitrate concentrations. Groundwater monitoring wells were installed and sediment samples from the aquifer were collected in 1991. Sediment samples were used to evaluate denitrification potentials, while water samples were collected at periodic intervals in 1992 and 1993 from the surface of the aquifer. Water samples were analyzed for nitrate-N and DOC-C. Denitrification was observed in sediment amended with nitrate and incubated …

Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied To Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi Mar 1996

Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied To Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi

Theses and Dissertations

Classification of time series has wide Air Force, DoD and commercial interest, from automatic target recognition systems on munitions to recognition of speakers in diverse environments. The ability to effectively model the temporal information contained in a sequence is of paramount importance. Toward this goal, this research develops theoretical extensions to a class of stochastic models and demonstrates their effectiveness on the problem of text-independent (language constrained) speaker recognition. Specifically within the hidden Markov model architecture, additional constraints are implemented which better incorporate observation correlations and context, where standard approaches fail. Two methods of modeling correlations are developed, and their …

Association Between Nutrient Intake And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease In California Seventh-Day Adventists, Peter Pribiš Mar 1996

Association Between Nutrient Intake And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease In California Seventh-Day Adventists, Peter Pribiš

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dietary habits are believed to be major determinants of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Studies of high and low risk populations have suggested several nutrients to be protective or hazardous against CHD. Most published work since 1984 on diet and CHD in the Adventist Health Study (AHS) population examined either foods or food groups. This study investigated ten nutrients as exposure variables and their relationship to CHD risk. A cohort of 23,616 nonsmoking, non-Hispanic white California Seventh-day Adventists was followed for six years beginning in 1976. Extensive dietary information was collected at baseline, as well as values of traditional …

Signal Averaging X-Ray Streak Camera With Picosecond Jitter, Anatoly Maksimchuk, M. Kim, J. Workman, G. Korn, J. Squier, D. Du, Donald Umstadter, G. Mourou, M. Bouvier

Donald Umstadter Publications

We have developed an averaging picosecond x-ray streak camera using a dc-biased photoconductive switch as a generator of a high-voltage ramp. The streak camera is operated at a sweep speed of up to 8 ps/mm, shot-to-shot jitter is less than ±1 ps. The streak camera has been used to measure the time history of broadband x-ray emission from an ultrashort pulse laser-produced plasma. Accumulation of the streaked x-ray signals significantly improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the data obtained.

Using the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis as the reference standard, this study evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and kappa statistic of gross pathology (abattoir postmortem inspection), histopathology, and parallel or series combinations of the two for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 430 elk and red deer. Two histopathology interpretations were evaluated: histopathology I, where the presence of lesions compatible with tuberculosis was considered positive, and histopathology II, where lesions compatible with tuberculosis or a select group of additional possible diagnoses were considered positive. In the 73 animals from which M. bovis was isolated, gross lesions of tuberculosis were most often in …

Linear And Non-Linear Preprocessing Of Wavefront Sensor Slope Measurements For Improved Adaptive Optics Performance, Dennis A. Montera Mar 1996

Linear And Non-Linear Preprocessing Of Wavefront Sensor Slope Measurements For Improved Adaptive Optics Performance, Dennis A. Montera

Theses and Dissertations

New methods for preprocessing wavefront sensor (WFS) slope measurements are presented. Methods are developed to improve the accuracy of WFS slope measurements, as well as estimating key atmospheric and system parameters from the slope signals. Both statistical and artificial neural network solutions are investigated. Also, new atmospheric models for generating slope and phase data with the proper spatial and temporal statistics are developed. The experiments in improving the accuracy of WFS slope measurements include reducing the WFS slope measurement error and compensating for adaptive optics system time delay through temporal slope prediction. The experiments in key parameter estimation include estimating …

Effects Of Vascularization On Lymphocyte/Tumor Cell Dynamics: Qualitative Features, J. A. Adam Mar 1996

Effects Of Vascularization On Lymphocyte/Tumor Cell Dynamics: Qualitative Features, J. A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

By adapting a pre-existing model to include the effects of vascularization within a tumor or multicell spheroid, a predator-prey system describing the cell populations of a solid tumor and reactive lymphocytes is formulated. The paper serves as a review of the minimal deterministic approach to tumor-host immune system interactions while examining, in a qualitative manner, the modifications to the dynamics induced by a simple representation of the vascularized tumor. In addition, the possibility of limit-cycle behavior is studied by regarding each of six parameters present in the model as a bifurcation parameter. Thus, in principle, well-defined and periodic oscillations in …

A Novel Cytoplasmic Dual Specificity Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Implicated In Muscle And Neuronal Differentiation, Robert J. Mourey, Quinn Vega, Jean S. Campbell, Mary Pat Wenderoth, Stephen D. Hauschka, Edwin G. Krebs, Jack E. Dixon Feb 1996

A Novel Cytoplasmic Dual Specificity Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Implicated In Muscle And Neuronal Differentiation, Robert J. Mourey, Quinn Vega, Jean S. Campbell, Mary Pat Wenderoth, Stephen D. Hauschka, Edwin G. Krebs, Jack E. Dixon

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Dual specificity protein tyrosine phosphatases (dsPTPs) are a subfamily of protein tyrosine phosphatases implicated in the regulation of mitogen- activated protein kinase (MAPK). In addition to hydrolyzing phosphotyrosine, dsPTPs can hydrolyze phosphoserine/threonine-containing substrates and have been shown to dephosphorylate activated MAPK. We have identified a novel dsPTP, rVH6, from rat hippocampus. rVH6 contains the conserved dsPTP active site sequence, VXVHCX2GX2RSX5AY(L/I)M, and exhibits phosphatase activity against activated MAPK. In PC12 cells, rVH6 mRNA is induced during nerve growth factor-mediated differentiation but not during insulin or epidermal growth factor mitogenic stimulation. In MM14 muscle cells, rVH6 mRNA is highly expressed in proliferating …

Heme Proton Resonance Assignments And Kinetics Study In High-Spin And Mixed-Spin Metmyoglobin Complexes By Chemical Exchange Nmr Spectroscopy, Ying Luo Feb 1996

Heme Proton Resonance Assignments And Kinetics Study In High-Spin And Mixed-Spin Metmyoglobin Complexes By Chemical Exchange Nmr Spectroscopy, Ying Luo

Dissertations and Theses

NMR studies of paramagnetic hemoproteins have improved significantly our understanding of the structure-function relationship of hemoproteins in general. Up to date most of the studies focus on low-spin ferric systems which are characterized by relatively narrow resonance peaks and concomitant better resolution.

However, characterizing in detail the NMR spectra of high-spin ferric hemoproteins is important since there are several hemoproteins, such as peroxidases, catalases, oxygenases, and some ferricytochromes that contain high-spin iron (III) in their biologically active forms. Yet assigning resonances from heme peripheral protons and/or heme pocket residues in high-spin myoglobins is a daunting undertaking. Only a sparse number …

The reaction mechanism of the molybdoenzyme xanthine oxidase has been further investigated by 13C and 17O ENDOR of molybdenum(V) species and by kinetic studies of exchange of oxygen isotopes. Three EPR signal-giving species were studied:  (i) Very Rapid, a transient intermediate in substrate turnover, (ii) Inhibited, the product of an inhibitory side reaction with aldehyde substrates, and (iii) Alloxanthine, a species formed by reaction of reduced enzyme with the inhibitor, alloxanthine. The Very Rapid signal was developed either with [8-13C]xanthine or with 2-oxo-6-methylpurine using enzyme equilibrated with [17O]H2O. The Inhibited signal was …

Global Climate Change Response Program, Water Yield In Semiarid Environment Under Projected Climate Change, United States Department Of The Interior Feb 1996

Global Climate Change Response Program, Water Yield In Semiarid Environment Under Projected Climate Change, United States Department Of The Interior

Water

This paper presents the practical application of a distributed parameter climate vegetation hydrologic model (CVHM) and its ability to simulate hydrologic response under existing conditions and under assumed CO2-induced climate and vegetation change. Applying the model to the Weber River basin provided a basis for determining the impacts of climate change on the hydrologic response. By using a "what if" scenario this model included the changes in plant transpiration rates and in vegetation cover under a CO2-altered climate change and the effects of these changes on water yield.

Photoinduced Electron Transfer Along A Β-Sheet Mimic, Alexei B. Gretchikhine, Michael Y. Ogawa Feb 1996

Photoinduced Electron Transfer Along A Β-Sheet Mimic, Alexei B. Gretchikhine, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to determine the energies of low-lying singlet and triplet states of the title compound. The EELS measurements give a splitting of 0.45 eV between the two lowest π f π* singlet states, as confirmed by optical absorption measurements, but do not give a discernable splitting between the corresponding triplet states. The experimental results are interpreted with the aid of ab initio electronic structure calculations using the CIS and CASPT2 methods. The calculations are consistent with the experiments, giving a much larger splitting between the π f π* singlet as compared to the π f …

Paleolimnological Records Of Climatic Change In North America, Sherilyn C. Fritz Feb 1996

Paleolimnological Records Of Climatic Change In North America, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Lacustrine fossil records provide long time series of data on limnological and climatic conditions; these data are useful for establishing natural patterns of climate variability and for generating testable hypotheses about atmospheric circulation and climate-ecosystem linkages. Shoreline features can indicate past lake-level fluctuations that may reflect changes in moisture balance, but often these records are discontinuous and are evidence of only extreme conditions. The organisms, geochemistry, and sedimentology of lake sediments may provide a more continuous sequence of direct and indirect lake-climate interactions in the past. The most clearly interpretable paleolimnnological records of climatic change are those that use several …

Century-Scale Paleoclimatic Reconstruction From Moon Lake, A Closed-Basin Lake In The Northern Great Plains, Kathleen R. Laird, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Eric C. Grimm, Pietra G. Mueller Feb 1996

Century-Scale Paleoclimatic Reconstruction From Moon Lake, A Closed-Basin Lake In The Northern Great Plains, Kathleen R. Laird, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Eric C. Grimm, Pietra G. Mueller

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Estimates of past lake-water salinity from fossil diatom assemblages were used to infer past climatic conditions at Moon Lake, a climatically sensitive site in the northern Great Plains. A good correspondence between diatom-inferred salinity and historical records of mean annual precipitation minus evapotranspiration (P - ET) strongly suggests that the sedimentary record from Moon Lake can be used to reconstruct past climatic conditions. Century-scale analysis of the Holocene diatom record indicates four major hydrological periods: an early Holocene transition from an open freshwater system to a closed saline system by 7300 B.P., which corresponds with a transition from spruce forest …

Linking Planktonic Diatoms And Climate Change In The Large Lakes Of The Yellowstone Ecosystem Using Resource Theory, Susan S. Kilham, Edward C. Theriot, Sherilyn C. Fritz Feb 1996

Linking Planktonic Diatoms And Climate Change In The Large Lakes Of The Yellowstone Ecosystem Using Resource Theory, Susan S. Kilham, Edward C. Theriot, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Resource-based physiology of the eight important planktonic diatom species in the large lakes of the Yellowstone region can be used to explain their relative abundances and seasonal changes. The diatoms are ranked along resource ratio gradients according to their relative abilities to grow under limitation by Si, N, P, and light. Hypotheses based on resource physiology can be integrated with observations on seasonal changes in diatom assemblages to explain the present distributions of diatoms and to test the causal factors proposed to explain diatom distributions over the Holocene. Knowledge of the limnology of these lakes and process-oriented physiology provide the …

Environmental Air Pollution Analysis In Selected Areas Of Abu Dhabi Emirate, Mahfoodh Abdulla Mohammed Darbool Feb 1996

Environmental Air Pollution Analysis In Selected Areas Of Abu Dhabi Emirate, Mahfoodh Abdulla Mohammed Darbool

Theses

There are little data available for environmental pollution, as well as air pollution and statistical information published in the United Arab Emirates. Especially, Abu Dhabi Emirate, has been the location of the UAE's most persistent and extreme levels of industrial oil waste and chemical smog and air pollutants which produces sulphur dioxide emission. In addition, has a high vehicle population, which produces carbon monoxide emission from the motor vehicle exhaust. The acute toxicity of carbon monoxide (CO) has long been recognized and well documented. The motor vehicle is by far the largest contributor to Co accounting for 55% of total …
