Wetland Mitigation Banking As A Tool For Conservation, Reid Beauregard Sisson May 2000

Wetland Mitigation Banking As A Tool For Conservation, Reid Beauregard Sisson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This comment proposes that wetland mitigation banking under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act be employed by land trusts and conservation groups to generate revenue for funding land acquisitions and on-going stewardship for both wetland and wetland-related upland habitats threatened or impacted by development. Conservation groups and land trusts can use mitigation banking to generate revenue to fund their conservation goals. General background on the Clean Water Act - Section 404 and regulations affecting wetlands, compensatory mitigation and mitigation banking is provided. Included are general problems with monitoring and enforcement of mitigation, pros and cons of preservation as compensatory …

Studies On The Roles Of Atp In Nitrogenase Catalysis, Wei Wu May 2000

Studies On The Roles Of Atp In Nitrogenase Catalysis, Wei Wu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogenase is the enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of nitrogen to ammonia in a reaction requiring MgATP hydrolysis. Two component proteins of nitrogenase are the iron protein (Fe protein) and the molybdenum-iron protein (MoFe protein).

Nitrogenase contains two nucleotide binding sites. During catalysis, the Fe protein binds two MgATP first. The conformational changes induced upon MgATP binding allow the Fe protein to associate with the MoFe protein. After the formation of the Fe protein-MoFe protein complex, a single electron is transferred from the Fe protein to the MoFe protein, an event that is coupled to MgATP hydrolysis in the Fe …

Rotational Structure Of Extremely Floppy Van Der Waals Complexes: Adiabatic Separation Of Angular And Radial Motion, P. Daniel Ward May 2000

Rotational Structure Of Extremely Floppy Van Der Waals Complexes: Adiabatic Separation Of Angular And Radial Motion, P. Daniel Ward

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The adiabatic or Born-Oppenheimer approximation is often used in molecular calculations to simplify the solution to the Schrödinger equation. The basis of the approximation is the large difference in the relative motions of the nuclei and electrons in the molecule—the electrons are able to respond almost instantly to the movements of the nuclei. Thus, the nuclei may be regarded as being fixed in a certain position and the Schrödinger equation can then be solved using the potential obtained by solving the electronic problem at fixed nuclear configuration.

A similar argument can be used to decouple the angular and radial motions …

Wildlife Strikes: A Growing And Costly Problem For Civil Aviation In The Usa, Sandra Wright, Richard Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife strikes, defined as aircraft collisions with birds or other animals, are a serious safety and economic concern in the USA and elsewhere. Liability issues related to wildlife strikes are also growing for airports and aircraft operators. In this paper, we will give examples of some significant strikes, show trends in wildlife strikes, explain why the strike problem is an increasing concern and discuss what actions can be taken to reduce and prevent strikes.

Seasonal Variability In Brown Tree Snake (Boiga Irregularis) Response To Lures, John A. Shivik, William G. Wright, Larry Clark Apr 2000

Seasonal Variability In Brown Tree Snake (Boiga Irregularis) Response To Lures, John A. Shivik, William G. Wright, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In continuing investigations of brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis, attraction to carrion odor, we hypothesized that the attractiveness of live or dead and visually apparent or concealed lures varies seasonally. We determined that lure condition (live or dead mouse lures) and sensory cues (visually apparent or concealed lure) interact among wet and dry seasons. Concealed carrion lures were more effective during the dry season than the wet season, but the effectiveness of live mouse lures showed less seasonal variability. We identified weather variables that covary with observed seasonal trends in capture rates and investigated the influence of recent feeding …

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer Apr 2000

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird-aircraft strike databases have been used to identify, monitor, and manage bird strike problems in the USA nationally and at individual airports. Up to 75% of all bird strikes that occur in the USA may not be reported by pilots or airport control tower personnel. Recent studies have suggested that individual airports may improve their strike reporting rates by having personnel regularly search runways for the remains of birds struck by aircraft. We analyzed a 20-year dataset of runway searches from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York to determine the degree of bias in reports of strikes …

Carbon Nanotube Atomic Force Microscopy Tips: Direct Growth By Chemical Vapor Deposition And Application To High-Resolution Imaging, Chin Li Cheung, Jason H. Hafner, Charles M. Lieber Apr 2000

Carbon Nanotube Atomic Force Microscopy Tips: Direct Growth By Chemical Vapor Deposition And Application To High-Resolution Imaging, Chin Li Cheung, Jason H. Hafner, Charles M. Lieber

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

Carbon nanotubes are potentially ideal atomic force microscopy probes because they can have diameters as small as one nanometer, have robust mechanical properties, and can be specifically functionalized with chemical and biological probes at the tip ends. This communication describes methods for the direct growth of carbon nanotube tips by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using ethylene and iron catalysts deposited on commercial silicon-cantilever-tip assemblies. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements demonstrate that multiwalled nanotube and single-walled nanotube tips can be grown by predictable variations in the CVD growth conditions. Force-displacement measurements made on the tips show that they …

Roles Of Odor, Taste, And Toxicity In The Food Preferences Of Lambs: Implications For Mimicry In Plants, Frederick D. Provenza, Bruce A. Kimball, Juan J. Villalba Apr 2000

Roles Of Odor, Taste, And Toxicity In The Food Preferences Of Lambs: Implications For Mimicry In Plants, Frederick D. Provenza, Bruce A. Kimball, Juan J. Villalba

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In the traditional sense, food ingestion consists of prehending, masticating, swallowing, and digesting plant matter. It is also possible to ingest plants without eating them. Volatile compounds are inhaled directly into the lungs and transported from the lungs into the bloodstream. Volatiles in high concentrations could presumably produce toxicosis, without an herbivore ever ingesting a plant in the customary sense. Volatile compounds may be aposematic, serving to warn potential predators of toxins in plants. We conducted three experiments to explore the roles of odor, taste, and toxicity in the food preferences of lambs. The first experiment determined if brief exposure …

The Age Of The Woolly Rhino From Dream Cave, Derbyshire, Uk, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Derek C. Ford Apr 2000

The Age Of The Woolly Rhino From Dream Cave, Derbyshire, Uk, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Derek C. Ford

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The Dream Cave woolly rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, is a "classic" specimen of a "cold-stage" fossil fauna from central England. The find was illustrated and described by Dean William Buckland in his seminal tome Reliquiae Diluvianae (1823) during the first half of the 19th century, and made a significant contribution to the development of Buckland's views on the origin of extinct and extirpated fossil vertebrates. The report presents the first, albeit indirect, radiometric dates on the specimen, and argues that the animal fell into the cave just before 37,000 years BP, during the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3 Interstadial (41 …

The True Truth About Kgi And The Field Station, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

There are multiple truths. One is the true truth. This truth remains the same no matter what anyone thinks or says about it. For example, it is true truth that we need oxygen. and that trees provide it. No matter what we think or say about it, this is the way it is. And, the Bernard Biological Field Station is habitat to threatened and endangered plants and animals. This, too, we know to be true.

Development Of Organoiron Methodology For Preparation Of The Polyene Natural Product Macrolactin A, Heiko Bärmann, Vadapalli Prahlad, Chunlin Tao, Young K. Yun, Zhi Wang, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Methodology for the synthesis of the C7–C13 segment (19) and C14–C24 segment (41) of macrolactin A have been developed. Dicarbonyl(methyl 7-nitro-2E,4Z-heptadienoate)triphenylphosphineiron (19) is prepared by nucleophilic addition to a (1-methoxycarbonylpentadienyl)iron cation. The C23 stereocenter of 41 is established by introduction of a C20 stereocenter, chirality transfer from C20 to C23 followed by (diene)iron mediated selective ionic reduction of the C20 hydroxyl. The C15 stereocenter may be established by nitrile oxide–olefin cyclocondensation.

Magnetite Biomineralization And Ancient Life On Mars, Richard B. Frankel, Peter R. Buseck

Physics

Certain chemical and mineral features of the Martian meteorite ALH84001 were reported in 1996 to be probable evidence of ancient life on Mars. In spite of new observations and interpretations, the question of ancient life on Mars remains unresolved. Putative biogenic, nanometer magnetite has now become a leading focus in the debate.

Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Hatchlings Success: The Effects Of Artificial Lights And Other Human Impacts, Hui-Yu Tracy Liang Apr 2000

Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Hatchlings Success: The Effects Of Artificial Lights And Other Human Impacts, Hui-Yu Tracy Liang

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sea turtles appeared more than 200 million years ago in the late Triassic period. They grow very slowly, taking an average of 25 years to reach sexual maturity, with a life span averaging 40-50 years. From May to October green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) emerge during the night and follow light cues toward the sea. Recently, beachfront development has increased hatchling mortality rate. When hatchlings emerge from nest, high densities of artificial lights lead them toward the land where they either desiccate and die, or are preyed upon. Short-wavelength high intensity light and the distance of artificial light are the …

Deposition And Uptake Availability Of Lead Shot For Waterfowl At Honeybee Pond Within The Overton Wildlife Management Area, Nevada, Usa, Jason Eckberg Apr 2000

Deposition And Uptake Availability Of Lead Shot For Waterfowl At Honeybee Pond Within The Overton Wildlife Management Area, Nevada, Usa, Jason Eckberg

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Lead shot has been banned for hunting waterfowl since 1974, but lead poisoning continues to be a major problem in many waterfowl habitats. In December of 1999, soil samples were collected from the Honeybee pond at the Overton Wildlife Management area to determine the lead pellet concentration and the availability of lead shot to waterfowl. There were no shot pellets recovered from the thirty-one samples taken from the pond. Based on this information waterfowl do not appear to be exposed to lead in the pond areas at OWMA.

The Noesy Jigsaw: Automated Protein Secondary Structure And Main-Chain Assignment From Sparse, Unassigned Nmr Data, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Alik Widge, John J. Kelley Iii, Marcelo J. Berardi, John H. Bushweller, Bruce Randall Donald

Dartmouth Scholarship

High-throughput, data-directed computational protocols for Structural Genomics (or Proteomics) are required in order to evaluate the protein products of genes for structure and function at rates comparable to current gene-sequencing technology. This paper presents the Jigsaw algorithm, a novel high-throughput, automated approach to protein structure characterization with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Jigsaw consists of two main components: (1) graph-based secondary structure pattern identification in unassigned heteronuclear NMR data, and (2) assignment of spectral peaks by probabilistic alignment of identified secondary structure elements against the primary sequence. Jigsaw's deferment of assignment until after secondary structure identification differs greatly from traditional approaches, …

Multiple Source Pools And Dispersal Barriers For Galápagos Plant Species Distribution, J. Alan Yeakley, John F. Weishampel

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

We reexamined geographic factors explaining the number of plant species on islands in the Galápagos Archipelago. We hypothesized that plant species richness (S) was related to the number of source pools and that plant species dispersal preferentially followed direct, oceanic pathways. To test different dispersal pathways from multiple source pools, the total number of islands within a given dispersal radius (i) was posed as the sum of the number of line-of-sight islands (Ci) and of the number of islands without line-of sight connection (Bi). In partial regression analyses, controlling for nearest island area (A2) …
