Bridging The Gap Between Network Science And Network Systems To Identify And Mitigate Cyber Risk: Identify And Mitigate Backdoor Attacks On Graph Neural Networks And On Complex Systems, Sabah Ettahri
Electrical & Computer Engineering Projects for D. Eng. Degree
This doctoral project aims to bridge the gap between graph theory and network science to identify and mitigate cyber risk, represented as a CY-Triangular Network that connects different networks. The CY-Triangular Framework is a cybersecurity system that integrates graph theory and network science through an interoperable learning approach. The objective of this project is to bridge the gap between two domains: network science and network systems. Accordingly, it examines one representative network from each field, focuses on a complex system network, and explores Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). The connection between these domains lies in graph theory. This research demonstrates that …

A series of calcium rare earth silicate chlorides, CaLnSiO4Cl (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Tb), was obtained as single crystals from flux crystal growth. The structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and were found to be related to the spodiosite/Wagnerite mineral structure, Ca2PO4F. The obtained compositions are variations of the spodiosite structure that result from two simultaneous elemental substitutions. Replacing one calcium for one rare earth element and the simultaneous replacement of one VO43− or PO43− with one SiO44−. CaEuSiO4Cl was found to luminesce, and its photoluminescence spectrum is reported.

Water quality has traditionally been measured via in situ sensors and satellites. The latter has limited applicability for smaller inland water bodies, while the former requires significant logistics, labor, and expense for routine sampling, and reactive/spurious sampling is often not feasible as a result (e.g., sampling pre-/post-storm). Consequently, small uncrewed aircraft system-based (sUAS-based) sampling has emerged as a potential solution to bridge these sampling gaps and challenges. But sampling from an sUAS is complicated by the need to pump water from depth, rather than suspending a sensor from the sUAS, due to concern over sampling sUAS-impacted waters. Here, we measure …

Gibbs energy models necessary to describe the thermochemical behavior of cesium and iodine in molten FLiNaK (46.5LiF-11.5NaF-42KF mol%), a proposed molten salt reactor coolant and fuel solvent, have been developed as they are of concern due to their high radiotoxicity and volatility. The six constituent pseudo-binary systems LiI-CsI, LiI-KI, LiI-NaI, NaI-KI, KI-CsI and NaI-CsI were evaluated using available phase equilibria and mixing enthalpy measurements. The models for the ternary reciprocal salt systems Li,Cs|F,I, Li,K|F,I, Li,Na|F,I, Na,K|F,I, Na,Cs|F,I and K,Cs|F,I were obtained by interpolation of the optimized pseudo-binary systems and parameters fit as necessary based on observed behavior. The additive (common …
Advancing Effective Connectivity Analysis: Robust And Sparse Group Dynamic Causal Modeling Via Extended Parametric Empirical Bayes, Godfred Arhin
Advancing Effective Connectivity Analysis: Robust And Sparse Group Dynamic Causal Modeling Via Extended Parametric Empirical Bayes, Godfred Arhin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) provides a principled framework for estimating effective connectivity in neuroimaging data, with Parametric Empirical Bayes (PEB) enabling hierarchical inference across sessions and subjects. However, standard PEB assumes Gaussian distributions at all hierarchical levels and employs conventional shrinkage priors that do not enforce true sparsity, limiting robustness to outlying subjects and reducing sensitivity to parsimonious connectivity structures. This thesis introduces a robust, sparsity-inducing hierarchical extension to DCM-PEB that addresses these limitations through two key innovations. First, a Student-t group-level likelihood replaces the conventional Gaussian likelihood, automatically downweighting outlying subject-level parameters using adaptive precision weights while retaining computational …
Modeling And Analysis Of Electric Signal In Neurons, Kevin J. Roberts
Modeling And Analysis Of Electric Signal In Neurons, Kevin J. Roberts
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Neurons in humans and other species transmit information by sending electric signals via axons. This process relies on the generation and propagation of action potentials—rapid changes in the membrane potential of the axon. Understanding the mechanisms of action potentials, including how they are generated and influenced by the axon geometry and material parameters, is crucial for gaining insight into neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis (diseases highly correlated to demyelination). In this work, we review and summarize mathematical models for signal transmission–including the classical Hodgkin-Huxley model, the Single Cable (SC) model, and the Double Cable (DC) model. We …

Influence Of Produced Water Runoff On Surface Water: A Statistical Analysis Of Water Quality In Petronilla Creek, Joshua Sierra
Water Resources Science and Technology Theses and Graduate Research Reports (Archived)
This case study research investigates the potential influence of produced water (PW), a byproduct of oil and gas (O&G) activities, on surface water quality. The study involved two sites along Petronila creek, located in Nueces County, with historical oil and gas presence. Data from nearby monitoring stations containing various water quality parameters typically associated with produced water, including total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride (Cl), sulfate (SO4), and specific conductance was used to perform a statistical analysis of spatial and temporal trends. Spatial comparisons were made between both sites and upstream, tributary, and downstream roles to test for variances in water …
Evaluating Nutrient Uptake Efficiency Of Texas Native Plants In Simulated Constructed Wetland Systems, Angelica Canizalez
Evaluating Nutrient Uptake Efficiency Of Texas Native Plants In Simulated Constructed Wetland Systems, Angelica Canizalez
Water Resources Science and Technology Theses and Graduate Research Reports (Archived)
Nutrient enrichment from wastewater effluent and runoff is a major driver of eutrophication in freshwater systems, increasing the need for effective and ecologically beneficial treatment strategies. Constructed wetlands (CWs) offer a nature-based solution for reducing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) while simultaneously supporting habitat and biodiversity. However, most CW research has focused on traditional species such as cattails and bulrushes, with limited quantitative data on the performance of Texas native plants. This study evaluated the nutrient uptake potential and stress tolerance of two Texas native species—buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) and Maximilian sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani)—in simulated, recirculating wetland systems.

Increasing Soil Health In Zero-Grade, Flood-Irrigated Rice In Eastern Arkansas, Hannah Elizabeth Vickmark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to build and maintain soil health and sequester soil C, many producers and researchers are turning towards regenerative management practices in agricultural systems, such as reduced tillage or no-tillage (NT), the implementation of winter cover crops (CC), and the use of organic or green manures, such as biochar. However, little research is being conducted on the long-term soil health and agronomic benefits of these practices in a flood-irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) production system. Three replications of seven treatment combinations were applied to 6.1 x 30.5 m rice plots. Baseline soil health properties were quantified at six …

Dolphins ‘Orient-Against-Current’: Foraging In Dredged Channels, Eliza M.M. Mills, Sarah Piwetz, Dara N. Orbach
Marine Science
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) are opportunistic foragers with global distributions that utilize diverse feeding tactics based on environmental factors, habitat features, prey behavior, group dynamics, and genetics. We describe a unique foraging tactic regularly observed in the confluence of dredged shipping channels with high anthropogenic disturbance, and explore potential abiotic (temporal, tidal, habitat) drivers of the behavior. A shore-based digital theodolite was used from 2021 to 2022 to observe common bottlenose dolphins (T. truncatus) foraging within a current in a technique we term Orient-Against-Current (OAC). During OAC, dolphins position themselves facing into the flow of a current, swimming at a …

Peptoid-Based Molecular Analysis Utilizing High-Speed Molecular Dynamics Methods, In Chul Hwang
Peptoid-Based Molecular Analysis Utilizing High-Speed Molecular Dynamics Methods, In Chul Hwang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Polypeptoids are N-substituted glycine polymers, which differ from peptides in the placement of the side chain being present on the amide nitrogen rather than the backbone Cα. While both peptoids and peptides are composed of linked amino acids, the structural changes resulting from the differing origin of the side chain leads to distinct backbone structure, as well as remove the chirality found in the peptide structure. These differences lead peptoids to have different physiochemical and biological properties, such as being resistant to proteolysis and diverse three-dimensional structures that are not observed in peptides. With the shifting of the …
Flexible Spatial Priors In Bayesian Neuroimaging: Gmrf, Nngp, And Deep Gmrf, Boyoung Hur
Flexible Spatial Priors In Bayesian Neuroimaging: Gmrf, Nngp, And Deep Gmrf, Boyoung Hur
All Dissertations
Structural neuroimaging is essential for understanding neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, enabling accurate delineation of brain regions through image segmentation. Among various segmentation methods, multi-atlas-based approaches like label fusion have become leading techniques. In statistics, Bayesian hierarchical models for label fusion are increasingly favored for their ability to incorporate uncertainty and prior knowledge. Also, a key challenge in modeling neuroimaging data is spatial dependence among image voxels, making the choice of spatial prior critical—particularly in high-resolution settings where segmentation accuracy and computational efficiency are both essential.
This dissertation proposes fully Bayesian spatial hierarchical models that explore two flex- ible …

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
The Upper Triassic Cow Branch Formation of the Dan River Basin, located in southern Virginia and northern North Carolina, has long captivated generations of geoscientists. Since the 1970s, researchers have sought to unravel the mystery surrounding the depositional environment of this ancient lake system. This world-class lagerstätte hosts a diverse assemblage of fossil fauna and flora, with a notable preservation bias toward fossil vertebrates, most prominently the archosauromorph, Tanytrachelos ahynis. The geology of the Cow Branch strata continues to evoke a persistent question: Are these sediments representative of a shallow or deep lake?
I undertook a petrographic and geochemical study …

Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris
Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris
All Dissertations
The characterization of systems encompasses a variety of modeling frameworks designed to capture specific behaviors and components of various system domains. Whatever the framework, the core elements of a system representation are the information of the system and a description of how that information is related. The relations in deterministic systems are functions, which, when composed to form executable processes, can be used to simulate system data. A declarative modeling framework is one that encodes mechanisms for preparing these simulations within the model structure, allowing an external agent to form the execution processes required for a given context. To date, …

Soil Characterization With Proximal Geophysics, Sophia M. Becker
Soil Characterization With Proximal Geophysics, Sophia M. Becker
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
High quality soil data is crucial for addressing numerous threats to human well-being such as water scarcity, food insecurity, and intensified natural disasters. True soil property values are determined by analyzing soil samples in a laboratory, but soil sampling is often expensive and time-consuming. Some in-field point sensors and remote sensing products are available to measure soil properties, but they have inherent limitations in measurement extent and resolution. Geophysical methods can fill the measurement scale gap between point measurements and remote sensing products, but various research questions remain open. This dissertation aims to advance understanding of geophysics-derived soil property measurements …
An Integrated Modeling Framework To Evaluate Circularity Of The Corn–Water–Ethanol–Beef Nexus, Heydi Han
An Integrated Modeling Framework To Evaluate Circularity Of The Corn–Water–Ethanol–Beef Nexus, Heydi Han
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation examines the transition from conventional linear agricultural and food bioenergy systems toward more circular, resilient, and resource-efficient configurations. Prior research indicates that spatial and temporal variability in soil, weather, animal biological responses, and management decisions strongly influences productivity, nutrient-use efficiency, and profitability. Studies have also shown that a diversified circular system can buffer these sources of variability, improving stability and adaptive capacity. Building on these insights, the central focus of this work is to develop an integrated modeling framework to evaluate circularity within the Corn-Water-Ethanol-Beef (CWEB) nexus and explore how climate variability and management choices shape system-wide performance. …

Synthesis And Study Of Stable Organic Radicals For Mri Contrast Agents And New Materials, Sabina Dhakal
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The first part of this dissertation focuses on the design, synthesis, and characterization of a thermally robust S =1/2 phototetrazolinyl monoradical and the development of synthetic methodologies for a high-spin (S = 1) phototetrazolinyl diradical. Electrochemical studies of the phototetrazolium cation (precursor to the monoradical) revealed a remarkably narrow electrochemical band gap (Ecell ≈ 0.82 V), suggesting promising electrical conductivity. Thermal analysis of the monoradical demonstrated excellent stability, with the onset of decomposition at 232 °C. Building on the excellent thermal stability and promising properties for electrical conductivity of the monoradical, we developed two condensation-based synthetic routes that provide viable …

Sustainable crop production in the semi-arid High Plains of Nebraska faces challenges from limited precipitation, high interannual variability, and economic risk. This dissertation investigates the long-term productivity, water use, soil health, and economic sustainability of dryland crop rotations, with emphasis on the role of pulses as alternatives to fallow.
Chapter 1 analyzes nearly three decades (1995–2023) of on-farm data from the High Plains Agricultural Laboratory (Sidney, Nebraska) to compare seven crop rotations, including wheat, corn, millet, sunflower, and field peas. Results showed that wheat–corn–fallow (W–C–F) consistently outperformed traditional wheat–fallow (W–F) and more intensified four-year rotations, providing the highest grain yields, …
Copula-Based Tests For Assessing The Association Between Genetic Variants And Mixed Phenotypes, Martin Amoah
Copula-Based Tests For Assessing The Association Between Genetic Variants And Mixed Phenotypes, Martin Amoah
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
High-dimensional omics studies increasingly involve heterogeneous data types and phenotypes, which traditional association methods struggle to model jointly due to incompatible marginal distributions and complex dependence structures. This thesis develops a unified copula-based framework for assessing associations between genetic variants and mixed phenotypes by decoupling flexible marginal models from their joint dependence structure. While previous copula-based approaches in this setting have focused largely on continuous and binary traits, we extend these methods to a broader class of phenotype pairs. Specifically, we introduce new association tests for bivariate outcomes involving ordinal–continuous, nominal–continuous, and survival–continuous combinations. The proposed methodology derives joint density …
Multi-Hop Hybrid Graph Neural Network, James Arthur
Multi-Hop Hybrid Graph Neural Network, James Arthur
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Graph-structured data appear across diverse domains, such as social networks, citation graphs, biological systems, and knowledge bases. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have emerged as a powerful framework for learning on such data, yet existing architectures face significant challenges. Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) suffer from over-smoothing as depth increases, Graph Attention Networks (GATs) introduce computational and statistical instabilities, and naïve multi-hop propagation inflates memory and computation while failing to adapt to topology. These limitations motivate the development of a new framework that is both expressive and scalable. This dissertation proposes the Multi-Hop Hybrid Graph Neural Network (MHHGNN), a novel architecture that …
Intelligent Predictive Frameworks Under Data Scarcity And Uncertainty, Solayman Hossain Emon
Intelligent Predictive Frameworks Under Data Scarcity And Uncertainty, Solayman Hossain Emon
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Modern predictive systems frequently operate under conditions of limited annotated data, high uncertainty, and the need for reliable decision-making. When the predictive models expand across heterogeneous data types (e.g., spatial, temporal streams), the challenge lies not only in accurate prediction but also in adapting in data distributions shifts or label scarcity. To address these issues, this thesis explores an Intelligent Predictive Framework that operates robustly under data scarcity and uncertainty across two distinct domains: medical imaging (spatial) and time-series forecasting (temporal). In the first part of this work, a semi-supervised mean teacher (MT) paradigm is tailored for medical image segmentation …

Hydrological Responses To Rainfall Pulses In Desert Vadose Zones: A Multi-Scale Approach Integrating Geophysical, Isotopic, And Eddy-Covariance Measurements, Alfredo Dagda-Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Drylands are shaped by natural episodic precipitation, where short, intense rainfall pulses interrupt prolonged drought and drive most hydrological and ecological activity. Yet the mechanisms that determine how pulse water infiltrates, is redistributed, stored, evaporated, and ultimately used by desert vegetation remain under quantified in landscapes underlain by shallow petrocalcic horizons. This dissertation integrates three complementary approaches 1) three-dimensional electrical resistivity tomography, 2) eddy-covariance evapotranspiration partitioning, and 3) stable-isotope tracing to improve a mechanistic understanding of pulse-driven water movement and plant water use in a caliche-rich piedmont at the Jornada Experimental Range. The first component characterizes how infiltration pulses interact …
