Section XIV: The Industrial Revolution, Classical Economics, and Economic Liberalism
While capitalism was making rapid strides toward dominating English industry, changes were taking place in agriculture which made it more efficient and productive, and which prepared it to be fitted eventually into the industrial capitalistic pattern. Actually, changes in the direction had been occurring in English agriculture since the revival of trade discussed in earlier chapters. [excerpt]

Section XX: Meaning in the Physical Sciences
Newton's laws of motion and their associated definitions encountered their first difficulty near the middle of the nineteenth century.
Newton had designed his theory to describe the behavior of matter in space and time by inventing a relationship between the force on a body and the resulting change in motion of the body. Such a description of nature came to be called mechanical, and a large part of physicists' efforts were directed toward reducing all aspects of physics to mechanics. These efforts were rewarded magnificently in the fields of heat, electricity, and sound, in addition to astronomy and other more …

Section VIII: The Development of Modern Science
Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), a Dane, spent nearly his entire life making careful measurements of the positions of the stars and planets. Most of his work was done at Copenhagen under the patronage of the Danish king. He developed and refined astronomical instruments to an accuracy that was far superior to anything previously done. In his late years at Prague, he started on the reduction to order of the systematic observations that he had made over a period of decades. In 1600 a young German mathematician and astronomer, Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), visited Tycho and then stayed to help in the mammoth …

Physics, Chapter 42: Optical Spectra And Atomic Structure, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Physics, Chapter 42: Optical Spectra And Atomic Structure, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
When light passes through a prism spectroscope or a diffraction-grating spectroscope, an optical spectrum is obtained in which the intensity of the radiation may be analyzed as a function of wavelength. The spectrum may be observed visually in the limited wavelength region to which the eye is sensitive; it may be focused on a photographic plate or upon a thermocouple or thermopile. Our knowledge of the structure of atoms and molecules is largely dependent upon the analyses of optical spectra, for these spectra are characteristic of the emitting atoms or molecules. Even before the spectra of atoms were properly understood …

One approach followed the material presented in a seventh grade arithmetic book; the other followed the material presented in a unit especially constructed for this experiment. The investigation was directed toward the question: Was there a difference between the two teaching methods as measured by the amount of information learned and retained by the students participating in this experiment?
Separation Of Fission Products From Irradiated Uranium By Peroxide Precipitation, John E. Cobb
Separation Of Fission Products From Irradiated Uranium By Peroxide Precipitation, John E. Cobb
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Aqueous precipitation of uranium as the peroxide has been used as a purification procedure since the early days of the Manhattan Project. The procedure has successfully produced an extremely pure product when handled in small batches. Heretofore peroxide precipitation has been utilized for relatively pure fuel from gaseous diffusion plants or in purifying column extraction products from salvage processes. A search of the unclassified literature had rendered no information upon the feasibility of separating fission products and fuel cladding materials by selective precipitation of uranium peroxide.
The primary objective of this research was to produce a uranium oxide which is …

A Proposal For Emphasizing Modern Mathematics In Elementary Algebra, Betty Sayre Grubb
A Proposal For Emphasizing Modern Mathematics In Elementary Algebra, Betty Sayre Grubb
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
For the past fifty years educators and mathematicians have urged that we change our approach to mathematics. The need for change or modernization of teaching mathematics is at least as great now as it ever was. The body of mathematical content vital to the pursuit of both pure and applied mathematics is growing continually. At the same time the demand for people trained in mathematics, including its newer developments, is growing. The only solution would appear to be the integration of these new ideas, as extensively as possible by each teacher, into all levels of training in mathematics. This thesis …

Applications Of Eighth Grade Mathematics To The Ninth Grade General Shop Program In Iowa, Robert Vern Echelbarger
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As a student engages in the construction of a project in an industrial arts class, it is necessary for him to learn the uses of tools and materials. The extent of his learning is reflected in part by the tangible evidence of the completed project and increased skill in the mastery of tools. Just as a student must learn the uses of tools and materials, so must he learn the use of intangible tools such as mathematics, reading, writing, and speech. The mastery of these intangible tools is important for the general education of the student . Mathematics plays an …
Local Connectedness In The Stone-Cech Compactification, Melvin Henriksen, John R. Isbell
Local Connectedness In The Stone-Cech Compactification, Melvin Henriksen, John R. Isbell
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
This is a study of when and where the Stone-Čech compactification of a completely regular space may be locally connected. As to when, Banaschewski [1] has given strong necessary conditions for βX to be locally connected, and Wallace [19] has given necessary and sufficient conditions in case X is normal. We show below that Banaschewski's necessary conditions are also sufficient and may be restated as follows: βX is locally connected if and only if X is locally connected and pseudo-compact (Corollary 2.5). Moreover, the requirement that βX be locally connected is so strong that it implies that every completely regular …

The Synthesis Of Some Methyl Substituted 3,4-Benzpyrenes, Jules L. Adelfang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
3,4-Benzpyrene (I), a highly carcinogenic hydrocarbon was first isolated from coal tar in 1933 by Cook, Hewett, and Hieger. Interest in the relationship of structure to carcinogenic activity and correlation of physical properties with carcinogenic potency led to the synthesis of several monomethyl 3,4-benzpyrenes during the decade following the isolation of the parent hydrocarbon. Detailed reviews concerned with the various phases of this research have been prepared. Recently the synthesis of the 1-^2, 7-^3, 8-^(2,5), and 10-^4 methyl-3,4-benzpyrenes completed the series of reported monomethyl derivaives.
Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell
Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Waste effluents from many industries are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. The control or treatment of these wastes for safe release into receiving waters presents a problem of consider able magnitude.
Much effort has been expended by some industries to solve this problem, primarily through chemical analysis for possible toxic components and then generally by a search of the literature to find out how toxic a particular component may be. Unfortunately, this approach has not been successful, nor can it be expected to be productive of satisfactory answers.

The Preparation And Catalytic Properties Of Rhenium Blacks Obtained By Reduction Of Re(Vii) In Anhydrous Ammonia And Amines With Alkali Metals, David William Seegmiller
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the investigation was to determine the catalytic activity of rhenium blacks obtained by reduction of rhenium salts in alkali metal-ammonia or amine systems. A review is presented on the chemical, physical and catalytic properties of rhenium, and on the rhenide ion, on the nature of the alkali metal-liquid ammonia system, and the reduction of metallic salts therein. The first reduction system studied was that obtained by dissolving sodium in liquid ammonia. The salts reduced in this system were KReO_4, Re_2O_7 and NH_4ReO_4. The reduction of KReO_4 was unsuccessful, and the heptoxide was difficult to handle. The product …
The Isomer Distribution In The Sulfonation Of Iodobenzene, Joseph A. Knight
The Isomer Distribution In The Sulfonation Of Iodobenzene, Joseph A. Knight
Theses and Dissertations
Using the isotope dilution technique, the distribution of isomers was determined when iodobenzene was sulfonated with sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide. The active isotope was S^35. Before this distribution could be established, it was necessary to prepare the pure isomers of iodobenzenesulfonic acid. These were prepared by diazotization of the corresponding aminobenzenesulfonic acids. Since o-aminobenzenesulfonic acid was not readily available, it was necessary that it be synthesized before the diazo reactions could be carried out. Considerable work has been done on the development of a method whereby the bromobenzenesulfonic acids could be synthesized and obtained in pure form. Some …
