Keeping Pace With Criminals: Designing Patrol Allocation Against Adaptive Opportunistic Criminals, Chao Zhang, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe May 2015

Keeping Pace With Criminals: Designing Patrol Allocation Against Adaptive Opportunistic Criminals, Chao Zhang, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Police patrols are used ubiquitously to deter crimes in urban areas. A distinctive feature of urban crimes is that criminals react opportunistically to patrol officers' assignments. Compared to strategic attackers (such as terrorists) with a well-laid out plan, opportunistic criminals are less strategic in planning attacks and more flexible in executing them. In this paper, our goal is to recommend optimal police patrolling strategy against such opportunistic criminals. We first build a game-theoretic model that captures the interaction between officers and opportunistic criminals. However, while different models of adversary behavior have been proposed, their exact form remains uncertain. Rather than …

Blocking Negative Influential Node Set In Social Networks: From Host Perspective, Harneet Kaur

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Nowadays, social networks are considered as the very important medium for the spreading of information, innovations, ideas and influences among individuals. Viral marketing is a most prominent marketing strategy using word-of-mouth advertising in social networks. The key problem with the viral marketing is to find the set of influential users or seeds, who, when convinced to adopt an innovation or idea, shall influence other users in the network, leading to large number of adoptions. In our study, we propose and study the competitive viral marketing problem from the host perspective, where the host of the social network sells the viral …

Addressing Light Pollution At Utah State University, Rachel Nydegger

Browse All Undergraduate research

Many outdoor light fixtures illuminate in all directions, meaning that a large por- tion of light emitted is sent upwards. This excess of light light pollution – repre- sents wasted energy and money, decreases public safety, harms nocturnal and migra- tory animals, and destroys our view of the night sky. While Utah State University Facilities does have a program in place to retrofit light fixtures, and newly installed fixtures are chosen with light pollution in consideration, many of the light posts on campus continue to pollute the night sky. With the support of the Student Sustain- ability Offices Blue Goes …

Municipal open data raises hopes and concerns. The activities of cities produce a wide array of data, data that is vastly enriched by ubiquitous computing. Municipal data is opened as it is pushed to, pulled by, and spilled to the public through online portals, requests for public records, and releases by cities and their vendors, contractors, and partners. By opening data, cities hope to raise public trust and prompt innovation. Municipal data, however, is often about the people who live, work, and travel in the city. By opening data, cities raise concern for privacy and social justice.
