Radar Observations Of Ash Eruptions, D. M. Harris, William I. Rose, R. Roe, M. R. Thompson

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Radar systems located at Portland, Oreg., Seattle, Wash., and near Spokane, Wash., have been used extensively for observations of ash clouds from explosive volcanic eruptions at Mount St. Helens during 1980. Eruption clouds are composed of silicate particles and are therefore detectable by radar. Radar observations can be made at night and in overcast weather when conventional observations of eruptions are difficult.-from Authors

Dispersing Blackbirds And Starlings From Objectionable Roost Sites, Donald F. Mott Mar 1980

Dispersing Blackbirds And Starlings From Objectionable Roost Sites, Donald F. Mott

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 9th (1980)

Frightening devices and other methods of dispersing roosting blackbirds and starlings are described along with the techniques for their proper application. In a study in the southeastern United States, exploding shotgun shells and noise bombs were used to disperse roosts of up to 1 million birds. Five roosts containing up to 1 million blackbirds and starlings were 96 to 100% dispersed by two to five people during three to eight evenings of harassment. Dispersal cost between $80 and $535 per roost.

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Small animals have been drawn into the urban setting, and as a consequence of their contact with man their populations are growing. The result of this growth is damage to man's property. We must take steps to reduce damage caused by wildlife in urban areas.

Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz May 1978

Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Natural hazards have been an increasing problem in wildland recreation areas. This study attempted to identify factors affecting park visitor perception of and preparedness for hazards.

A model was formulated incorporating three major independent variables which might affect park visitor responses to hazards. These were: (1) previous experience, (2) information about hazards provided by the park administration (such as warnings located on signs or in brochures), and (3) visitor perception of whether responsibility for hazards rests with the individual or with an outside authority such as government or God. Trip length and knowledge of hazards were also thought to be …

Feasibility Of Accelerating Construction Of The Central Utah Project, Trevor C. Hughes, L. Douglas James, Frank Haws, C. Earl Israelsen

Reports

Introduction: Objective: In April, 1977 the President's statement on water projects recommended that a number of federal water development projects, including the Conneville unit of the Central Utah Project, not be completed. The ensuing efforts of project supporters brought about a review of the projected costs, benefits, and other political, social and environmental factors and consequently, the current issue is not whether or not the project should be constructed. Rather, the objective of this report is to examine the following question: Given the fact that at least the 5 units of the CUP which have already been authorized will eventually …

Rhode Island Coastal Zone Management And Local Government Organizational Structure: An Analysis Of Selected Community Governments, Methods, And Capabilities, Robert F. Greene

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

It is the purpose of this discussion to examine the organizational structure, and the governmental processes selected Rhode Island communities utilize to carry out their particular role as participants in the management of the coastal resources within their political boundaries. Insofar as practicable, the major sources of information for this research are the communities themselves--their elected and appointed officials, and the documentary material the Towns generate and use as they carry out their management functions.

An Improved Approach For "Optimization" Of Multiple Policy Objectives, Perihan Soliman Tawfik Feb 1977

An Improved Approach For "Optimization" Of Multiple Policy Objectives, Perihan Soliman Tawfik

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis involved three categories of activity; development and testing of an expanded version of ELECTRE II, also the development of a computer software program for ELECTRE II.

The expanded version of ELECTRE II took the form of an input aiding questionnaire along with a tailored structure to suit a particular problem. The contents of the questionnaire were based on geueral problem solving concepts (techniques, strategies) gleaned from the systems science literature. This questionnaire assumed a programmed instruction format in contrast to that of an interactive computer software package, so that it would not be prohibitive in terms of expenses …

Are Nuclear Shipments Really Safe?, William A. Brobst Apr 1974

Are Nuclear Shipments Really Safe?, William A. Brobst

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The transportation of nuclear materials is on the increase. Although nuclear shipments are only a very small fraction of the Nation’s hazardous materials shipments, they attract a great deal of public attention. Shipments of spent nuclear fuel and nuclear wastes are a particular concern.

One of the many fears that people have about nuclear energy is the possibility that a nuclear shipment might somehow go awry and cause a serious public hazard. Primarily, they are worried that a shipment of spent reactor fuel or highly radioactive waste could be involved in a serious rail or highway accident and dump its …

4th Bird Control Seminar -- Introductory Comments, William B. Jackson Sep 1968

4th Bird Control Seminar -- Introductory Comments, William B. Jackson

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

My travels the last few years have permitted me to see some aspects of bird management practices in both Asia and Europe. I must confess that had I not seen the Tori gates of Japan or the cathedral spires in Europe, I might well have thought I was in Ohio. Scarecrows were often seen. Fields were adorned with glittering strips of metal or blowing streamers of paper. In Scotland, red balloons flew over a turnip field. The sound of acetylene exploders sometimes fractured the tranquil countryside. While I saw many essentially useless devices for keeping birds out of man's agricultural …

Good Practice In Bird Management, James W. Steckel Sep 1966

Good Practice In Bird Management, James W. Steckel

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I'm going to deviate a little bit from what's been said. I'd like to read to you first of all a Good Practice Statement for Bird Management that was accepted by the National Pest Control Association in the past year, 1965. I think it's important for all the people here, realizing that some of you are suppliers, some of you are from regulatory agencies, some of you are in the bird management business, and others are in¬terested in this field in many other ways. It's important for us to realize, all of us, that this field is just in the …

A Comparison Of The Members Of A Children's Health Club With Non-Members By Use Of A Standardized Health Test And Behavior Inventory, Barbara Mcdonald May 1959

A Comparison Of The Members Of A Children's Health Club With Non-Members By Use Of A Standardized Health Test And Behavior Inventory, Barbara Mcdonald

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many methods of health education are being used today to help children and young people grow into healthy useful citizens. A health club is one such method which may be used to provide activities and health knowledge which may influence attitude and behavior.

The purpose of this study was to compare children who had been members of a health club with other children who were not members to see if there was any difference between the two groups in health knowledge, attitudes, and behavior as measured by a Health Achievement Test and a Health Behavior Inventory.

Twenty-two members of the …
