Chemically Mediated Foraging Preference Of Black Bears ( Ursus Americanus), Bruce A. Kimball, Dale L. Nolte, Richard M. Engeman, John J. Johnston, Frank R. Stermitz

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The role of chemical constituents in the foraging behavior of black bears (Ursus americanus) was investigated using two field studies. Vascular tissue samples were collected from Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees recently foraged by black bears. Samples were extracted and analyzed by liquid and gas chromatography to determine carbohydrates and terpenes, respectively. Chemical data were subjected to correlation analyses and multiple regression to examine if they adequately describe observed foraging preferences. Free-ranging black bears also were offered a choice of four test diets that differed in content of carbohydrates and terpenes. Results indicated that forage preferences were …

Study Of Human Factors Variables In Battle Outcome Prediction Models, David Andrew Glovier Apr 1998

Study Of Human Factors Variables In Battle Outcome Prediction Models, David Andrew Glovier

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Over time there have been many improvements in models that are used to predict the outcome of battles. Currently there is much supposition and speculation surrounding the use of human performance related factors as additional inputs to battle simulation models to improve their accuracy. However there is no conclusive scientific evidence which shows that these factors do make a significant difference. This study investigates the use of factors that may impact on the human performance directly or indirectly in battle prediction models. These factors consist of traditional human factors and external factors that may influence the human performance. The research …

Neuro Fuzzy Reasoning For Pattern Classification And Object Recognition., Jayati Ghosh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In real world, pattern classification and object recognition problems are faced with fuzzi- ness that is connected with diverse facets of cognitive activity of the human being. An origin of sources of fuzziness is related to labels expressed in feature space as well as to labels of classes taken into account in classification and /or recognition procedures. Though a lot of scientific efforts have already been dedicated to pattern recognition problems, especially to classification procedures, still pattern recognition is confronted with a continuous challenge coming from a human being who can perform lot of ex- tremely complex classification tasks by …

Computer Intensive Physics, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

In the abstract packet for the conference is an article of references about ideas from cognitive studies that help us teach physics (Fuller, 1998). There is also a pamphlet of references to innovative physics teaching programs in the United States and many of those programs have world-wide web sites so you can access information about those programs from Portugal (O'Kuma, 1998).

I want to talk about my research project last year, which I now call "Computer Intensive Physics", but it really started out as paper-less physics.

Justifying Public Decisions In Arctic Oil And Gas Development: American And Russian Approaches, Nicholas E. Flanders, Rex V. Brown, Yelena Andre'eva, Oleg Larichev Feb 1998

Justifying Public Decisions In Arctic Oil And Gas Development: American And Russian Approaches, Nicholas E. Flanders, Rex V. Brown, Yelena Andre'eva, Oleg Larichev

Dartmouth Scholarship

Government resource decisions in the Arctic typically involve complex issues; multiple criteria are used to choose among alternatives. This complexity is even greater with petroleum development because of concerns about national energy security, environmental impacts, and economic development. Two decision-aiding techniques may help decision makers clarify their decisions to themselves, the stakeholders, and the general public. The Russian qualitative technique seeks to reduce the number of criteria and find alternative options that may be better than the initial ones. The Western quantitative technique seeks to measure the decision maker* s judgement about the utility and certainty of each option. These …

A Visual Object-Relationship Query Language For User-Database Interaction, Keng Siau Feb 1998

A Visual Object-Relationship Query Language For User-Database Interaction, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User–database interaction has a direct and immediate effect on the effectiveness and efficiency of database end users. Traditional query languages like SQL and QBE require end users to understand the underlying data structure in the database. This is a burden on end users, especially novice end users who have little technical knowledge or understanding of database. To alleviate the need for end users to know the logical database organization, this paper proposes the use of an object–relationship (OR) model and a formal high-level visual query language as the interface. Using this interface, end users communicate only domain knowledge with the …

Ruby Canyon/Black Ridge Integrated Resource Management Plan, Record Of Decision And Finding Of No Significant Impact, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The decision to implement this plan is in conformance with the 1987 Grand Junction Resource Area Resource Management Plan (RMP). Many of the management actions being proposed in the plan constitute an amendment of the RMP. This integrated resource management plan employs a "benefits based management approach" which expands our management focus beyond lands and resources to also address resulting outcomes as improved conditions. Plan implementation for the RCBR ecosystem will be done through an interdisciplinary ad-hoc committee which defines issues and prioritizes management actions. In addition, the vision statement developed by the ad-hoc committee will continue to provide guidance …

Wildlife Information Sources And Search Methods On The Internet, Diana L. Dwyer Jan 1998

Wildlife Information Sources And Search Methods On The Internet, Diana L. Dwyer

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Vertebrate pest damage information is pulled from a variety of disciplines ranging from wildlife management to psychology. The Internet has opened the door to what seems to be an unending number of information sources. Researchers can become overwhelmed by the choices and different levels of information available. The correct use of search engines and a checklist of criteria to evaluate the quality of information obtained can help to eliminate the extraneous information and make the time spent on the Internet more productive. There are a large number of wildlife, biology, environmental, and other related sites that are especially useful to …
