The Acidic Transformaion Products Of Indoles Formed By Basidiomycetes, Chung-Ke Chang

Masters Theses

"A survey of the ability of basidiomycetes to convert tryptophan, tryptamine and indole acetic acid to other acidic indoles has been made.

The product formed from tryptamine by Tricholoma nudum was identified as indole acetic acid. The product formed by Cantharellus cibarius from D-tryptophan was identified as N-acetyl-D-tryptophan. The products were purified and identified by means of paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and melting points.

The conversion of tryptamine and D-tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Leucopaxillus paradoxus, Hygrophorus conicus and Naucoria confragosa. H. conicus, L. paradoxus and N. confragosa transformed tryptamine and indole acetic acid into …

The minerals determined in the fluorspar ores were: fluorite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, calcite, strontianite, witherite, barite, quartz, dolomite, oil and bitumen. Most of these minerals are present both …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Elastic And Voigt Transient Spherical Waves, And Plane Three-Element Viscoelastic Waves, Edward Hornsey Jan 1967

A Theoretical Investigation Of Elastic And Voigt Transient Spherical Waves, And Plane Three-Element Viscoelastic Waves, Edward Hornsey

Doctoral Dissertations

"A mathematical model of explosive generated waves in rock is needed in many areas of engineering endeavor. Investigations to date have been unsuccessful in obtaining a model that satisfactorily represents real wave phenomena at all radial distances and in all of the important characteristics.

In this investigation, spherical waves in elastic and Voigt media were investigated. Series solutions for plane waves in a three-element viscoelastic medium were obtained. A dual exponential pressure pulse, P(t) = Po (e-αt-e-ßt) was assumed because it can exhibit significant features of real pressure pulses while avoiding instantaneous rise time, which …

Good Practice In Bird Management, James W. Steckel Sep 1966

Good Practice In Bird Management, James W. Steckel

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I'm going to deviate a little bit from what's been said. I'd like to read to you first of all a Good Practice Statement for Bird Management that was accepted by the National Pest Control Association in the past year, 1965. I think it's important for all the people here, realizing that some of you are suppliers, some of you are from regulatory agencies, some of you are in the bird management business, and others are in¬terested in this field in many other ways. It's important for us to realize, all of us, that this field is just in the …

Host And Prophage Modifications Of Ultraviolet Induction In Salmonella Potsdam, Bela B. Toth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In induction experiments with naturally occurring and artificially lysogenic strains of S. potsdam, cells were irradiated in buffer, transferred to complete medium, and then assayed for free phage. Irradiation was followed by half hourly samples for free phage from the growing populations of irradiated cells. For an estimation of burst sizes, the irradiated cells were diluted out to a final concentration of 1 cell per ml and distributed to tubes in 0.5 ml quantities. All assays were done by the top-layer method with streptomycin incorporated in the top-layer and SP2-strr as the bacterial indicator. The non-lysogenic strain S. …

Studies On The Preparation Of Tetrasubstituted Hydrazones, William Kao Aug 1966

Studies On The Preparation Of Tetrasubstituted Hydrazones, William Kao

Masters Theses

Introduction

In a recent study of the ultraviolet spectra of substituted hydrazones, it was concluded that a sterio effect existed in tetrasubstituted hydrazones that significantly hindered complete rotation about the nitrogen-nitrogen bond. Weber16 noted that di- and tri-substituted hydrazones exhibited similar spectra with three strong absorption bands at approximately 235, 300, and 340 mu. In acid solutions, the spectra of these compounds showed a marked decrease in intensity of the long wavelength band. It has been postulated that this change was a consequence of the protonation of the non-bonding electron-pair on the amino nitrogen atom, and thus correlated the …

An independent determination has been made of the transformation pressures assigned to the high-pressure transformations in Ba and Bi which are generally used for calibration points. The metals were imbedded in NaCl, and the transitions were detected by the resistance change of the metal while the NaCl lattice parameter was simultaneously measured by x-ray diffraction. The NaCl compression values determined at the fixed points were related to pressure by reference to the semiempirical compression curve of Decker. The Ba I-II and Bi III-V transformations at room temperature were assigned thermodynamic equilibrium values of 53.3 ±1.2 kbar and 73.8 ±1.3 kbar, …

Nature Of Non-Biological Decomposition Of Nitrite In Acid Media, Mukkatira Kariappa Mahendrappa May 1966

Nature Of Non-Biological Decomposition Of Nitrite In Acid Media, Mukkatira Kariappa Mahendrappa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Curiosity is the cause of investigations, and the thirst for knowledge originates from it. Many times at the end of investigations, the number of questions raised are greater than those for which answers are sought. Therefore, all the information gathered through scientific investigations may not be of value for immediate application in practical life. Nevertheless, no research can be considered less important than the other because the integration of several scientific findings considered less less important at the time of investigation may reveal something of very high significance. Similarly, the study of various transformation reactions that the added fertilizers undergo …

The Effect Of Soil Adsorbents On The Thermodynamic Properties Of Soil Water System, Taghi Manbeian May 1966

The Effect Of Soil Adsorbents On The Thermodynamic Properties Of Soil Water System, Taghi Manbeian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been generally recognized that the surface phenomena of the solid particles such as shrinking and swelling, water- holding capacity, water' movement, and cation exchange are important in understanding the physical properties of the soil. Clay is the most prevalent material in the colloidal fraction of many soils. Because of the complex nature of the surface of clays and the small size of the particles, the direct study of surface phenomena is difficult. Thermodynamic functions change in accordance with changes and organization within the system. Thus, an examination of the thermodynamics of surface phenomena provides some understanding of the …

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Regimes And Atmospheric Environments On Transpiration And The Energy Status Of Water In Plants, Sampatrao A. Gavande May 1966

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Regimes And Atmospheric Environments On Transpiration And The Energy Status Of Water In Plants, Sampatrao A. Gavande

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plant responses to different soil moisture regimes have been extensively studied. Because of interactions between the soil, plant and climatic factors, few convincing generalizations concerning the influence of soil water on the transpiration of water by plants have been established. Generally single factors or at most the interaction of two have been studied at any one time. Useful theories describing the conditions of water retention in plant tissues and movement of water through plants have been proposed. Equally useful theories have been suggested for describing the retention and transmission of water in soil. The integration of these theories and their …

The Course Or Behavior Of Applied Zinc To Soil Containing Different Levels Of Freshly Applied Organic Matter, Artnel Samuel Henry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soil organic matter consists of a heterogenous mixture of plant, animal, and microbial material in various stages of decomposition. It possesses characteristics which at present are not very well known. Careful studies have been directed towards the behavior of organic matter as it affects plants directly and man indirectly. Consequently, much tire is devoted to its study from the point of metal inactivation and chelation, the earlier investigations failed to produce results worthy of the efforts expended, so a loss of interest in the continued pursuit of knowledge resulted, about two decades ago when it was learned that many polyvalent …

An Investigation Of The Control Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through The Inclusions Of Prefractures, William Joseph Kabeiseman Jan 1966

An Investigation Of The Control Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through The Inclusions Of Prefractures, William Joseph Kabeiseman

Doctoral Dissertations

"Among the methods for determining the in-situ state of stress within the earth’s crust, hydraulic fracturing has been and is receiving much attention. This method, in principle, measures stress directly with no delicate electronic equipment required nor knowledge of the elastic modulus of the material.

This dissertation investigates experimentally whether or not control of fracture orientation can be achieved by the introduction of circular and elliptical prefractures along with sand inclusions into cast hydrostone blocks which are hydraulically fractured. A mathematical model is presented and analytically solved for the stress condition associated with a circular crack containing fluid pressure with …

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins Jan 1966

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous and diverse physiological actions are found among 2-oxazoline compounds. No reports of the synthesis or biological testing of 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines were found in the literature. On the basis of the known pharmacological activities of certain aza- and diazaspirans, it was felt that 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines should possess medicinal activity. In particular, it was reasoned that the combination in a bicyclic spiro structure of the 2-oxazoline ring with rings systems commonly found in synthetic antitussive compounds might result in active antitussive agents.

The aim of this research was the synthesis of a series· of 2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spirocyclopentanes and a series of 1'-methyl-2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spiro-4’-piperidines. Six members were …

Two-Dimensional Seismic Model Studies, Joong Hee Chun

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research was to design and construct apparatus suitable for two-dimensional seismic model studies.

A new technique for two-dimensional seismic model testing was devised which allows wide application of the equipment. This enabled the author to place the source and receiver in any desired position on the model, thereby permitting the recording of seismic events as function of distance and depth at any position

Two simple geometric models were tested to demonstrate the experimental range of the apparatus designed. The recorded data were compared with theoretical predictions and were found to be in good agreement"--Abstract, page ii.

Capillary Behavior Of Viscous Liquids, Marvin De Young Jan 1966

Capillary Behavior Of Viscous Liquids, Marvin De Young

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A major problem confronting every investigator who works with synthetic organic chemistry is that of the crystallization of the products obtained. This problem necessitates extensive attention both on the experimental and on the theoretical level. In order to gain an understanding of the behavior of substances in the liquid state, so as to be better able to manipulate them in procedures intended to induce crystallization from complex mixtures, considerable attention has been given to various models of the liquid state. An understanding of the nature of pure liquids would seem to be an essential prelude to any attempt to understand …

Application Of Electronic Analog Computer To Solution Of Hydrologic And River Basin Planning Problems: Utah Simulation Model Ii, J. Paul Riley, Duane G. Chadwick, Jay M. Bagley

Reports

As demands upon available water supplies increase, there is an accompanying increase in the need to assess the downstream hydrologic system. At Utah State University this problem is being approached by electronic analog simulation of the hydrologic system. Modeling concepts are based upon the development of basic relationships which describe the various hydrologic processes. Within a system, these relationships are linked by the continuity -of-mass principle which requires a hydrologic balance at all points. Once established, the model is applied to any particular geographic unit by determining the appropriate constants of the hydrologic equations. The analog computer is ideally suited …
