Masters Theses

"The reaction between Ce(IV) salt solutions and EDTA solution was followed titrimetrically and spectrophotometrically and found to occur in stages. Four equivalents of Ce(IV) are reduced per mole of EDTA almost instantaneously at room temperature or even lower. With increasing temperature and reaction time an ultimate of about 14 equivalents of Ce(IV) is consumer per mole of EDTA. Formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and other unidentified compounds are the products of oxidation of EDTA with Ce(IV). The kinetics of the reaction in aqueous sulfuric acid (0.09 - 2.95 M̲) was studied over the temperature range 11.7-40⁰ by a spectrophotometric technique. In the …

Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper describes the organization of a laboratory course in Soil Chemical Analysis. Students select and pursue small research problems to gain experience in the soil analyses that are discussed in lecture and required in the laboratory. Involvement of the class in an actual research problem proved challenging to both the instructor and the class. The data obtained often supplemented current departmental research. Individual projects were found to be easier to supervise than team problems. This paper reports results of a team project examining parameters of a pot experiment. Shape of the pot, methods of watering, methods of fertilizing, and …

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick Jan 1968

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical breakage of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) due to the action of acoustic transients has been investigated. The acoustic transients were produced by transient heating of a Prussian blue dye solution (attenuation coefficient of 1000 per cm) when a ruby laser light (20 x 106 watts) was incident on the dye surface. A quartz piezoelectric transducer was used to determine the amplitude and form of the acoustic wave. The production of acoustic waves by transient heating is discussed, and the theoretical form of the acoustic wave determined for various boundary and initial conditions are compared to the experimentally …

Application Of An Electronic Analog Computer To The Problems Of River Basin Hydrology, J. Paul Riley, Duane G. Chadwick Jan 1967

Application Of An Electronic Analog Computer To The Problems Of River Basin Hydrology, J. Paul Riley, Duane G. Chadwick

Reports

As demands upon available water supplies increase, there is an accompanying increase in the need to assess the downstream consequences resulting from chances at specific locations within a hydrologic system. This problem was approached by electronic analog simulation of the hydrologic system. The complexity of a hydrologic model depends to a large extent upon the magnitude of the time and spatial increments utilized in the model. The increment size selected depends upon the types of problems to be solved. Three models are described, and in each succeeding model the definition in terms of time and/or space is improved. While the …
