Evaluation Of Recovery In A Polluted Creek After Installation Of New Sewage Treatment Procedures, Robert A. Kuehne May 1975

Evaluation Of Recovery In A Polluted Creek After Installation Of New Sewage Treatment Procedures, Robert A. Kuehne

KWRRI Research Reports

Response of Hickman Creek near Lexington, Kentucky to alleviation from serious sewage pollution was studied from January, 1973 through July, 1974. Wastes are now handled from an efficient secondary treatment facility and four sequential polishing lagoons before chlorination and discharge to West Hickman branch.

Physico-chemical tests gave no strong indication of residual pollution effects at the start of the study, approximately six months after the treatment facility opened. At low flow a slight oxygen sag, probably associated with algal growth in the lagoons, persists downstream from the outfall. Mean values for turbidity, nitrates and COD are somewhat higher at the …

The Influence Of Roots On The Accuracy Of Soil-Moisture Measurements Taken With A Neutron Moisture Meter, Terry L. Andreessen May 1975

The Influence Of Roots On The Accuracy Of Soil-Moisture Measurements Taken With A Neutron Moisture Meter, Terry L. Andreessen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of roots on soil-moisture measurements taken with a neutron probe were studied. These effects were observed under three different soil-moisture conditions, with different sized roots, and with varying distances between the access tube and root. The moisture conditions used were air dry, field capacity, and saturated.

Large roots can greatly affect neutron soil-moisture measurements when the access hole is drilled through the root. Positive errors as large as 52 percent were found when the soil moisture was at field capacity. With dry and saturated conditions positive errors of 43 percent and 38 percent respectively, were found.

In most …

Water Quality Impact Of Burning And Grazing On A Chained Pinyon-Juniper Site In Southeastern Utah, John C. Buckhouse May 1975

Water Quality Impact Of Burning And Grazing On A Chained Pinyon-Juniper Site In Southeastern Utah, John C. Buckhouse

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During 1973 and 1974 a water quality study was conducted in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. In 1973, baseline water quality data was collected from study locations which had been chained to remove pinyon-juniper vegetation six years earlier. The area had been chained under two different techniques: (1) doubled chained, with debris-left-in-place and (2) chained, with debris windrowed. An "undisturbed, natural" woodland was left between these two treatments in order to serve as a control area.

In the fall of 1973 and spring of 1974 secondary treatments of burning and grazing were superimposed upon the debris-in-place and windrowed sites, respectively. …

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul Apr 1975

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul

Theses and Dissertations

Serine transhydroxymethylase was purified one thousand-fold from bovine brain and one hundred and twenty-fold from bovine liver. Both enzymes were yellow due to the presence of the coenzyme pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the liver enzyme showed one major band containing 95% of the protein, while in the case of the brain enzyme two major bands of nearly equal intensity were observable. The specific activity of the crude liver enzyme was about sixty times higher than that of brain. The liver enzyme was also more heat stable than the brain enzyme. The purified enzymes exhibited L-allothreonine and L-threonine aldolase …

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of A Free Radical Decay In Aqueous Solution, Denzel Lee Fillmore Apr 1975

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of A Free Radical Decay In Aqueous Solution, Denzel Lee Fillmore

Theses and Dissertations

The decomposition of nitrosyl disulfonate ion was studied in strongly alkaline solution of 10-2 to 5 m sodium hydroxide. The decomposition was found to be first-order in both hydroxide and nitrosyl disulfonate ions. A multi-step mechanism involving sulfite ion, sulfite ion radical and nitrosyl monosulfonate ion radical as intermediates was proposed, with the initiating step being the SN2 replacement of a sulfite ion by a hydroxide ion. The rate constant for the initiating step ranged from 1.2 x 10-7 to 2.25 x 10-5 M-1s-1 for the solution concentration range of the study. The products of the decomposition were identified as …

Ellipsometric Function Of A Film-Substrate System: Applications To The Design Of Reflection-Type Optical Devices And To Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ratio ρ = Rp/Rs of the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients Rp and Rs for light polarized parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) to the plane of incidence, reflected from an optically isotropic film-substrate system, is investigated as a function of the angle of incidence ϕ and the film thickness d. Both constant-angle-of-incidence contours (CAIC) and constant-thickness contours (CTC) of the ellipsometric function ρ(ϕ,d) in the complex ρ plane are examined. For transparent films, ρ(ϕ,d) is a periodic function of d with period Dϕ that is a function of ϕ. …

Interference Jan 1975

Interference

Calculus-Based General Physics

You may have observed the sound from your radio fade in and out as you listened to some distant station. Or perhaps you have sat in a "dead" seat in a poorly designed concert hall where, despite the fact that no physical object is between you and the performer, the sound is distorted and weak. Perhaps you have held two fingers close together and looked with one eye through the narrow slit separating the fingers and observed those mysterious black lines in and parallel to the slit. These and many other similar phenomena result from the interference of two or …

Traveling Waves Jan 1975

Traveling Waves

Calculus-Based General Physics

"For many people -- perhaps for most -- the word "wave" conjures up a picture of an ocean, with the rollers sweeping onto the beach from the open sea. If you have stood and watched this phenomenon, you may have felt that for all its grandeur it contains an element of anticlimax. You see the crests racing in, you get a sense of the massive assault by the water on the land -- and indeed the waves can do great damage, which means that they are carriers of energy -- but yet when it is all over, when the wave …

Personalized System Of Instruction (Psi): An Alternative, James G. Buterbaugh, Robert Fuller Jan 1975

Personalized System Of Instruction (Psi): An Alternative, James G. Buterbaugh, Robert Fuller

Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan, Materials

Buterbaugh and Fuller discuss the Personalized System of Instruction--what it is, how it can (or cannot) be evaluated, and some problems which may be encountered with its use. If the lecture-taught course has instructors meeting the students as adversaries, continually answering redundant questions, haggling over half-credit for half-correct answers, and generally finding most students being inhibited by the lock-step timing of a lecture course, then PSI is an alternative. Extensive acceptance and employment of this alternative mode of instruction should cause instructional developers to take another look at the essential features of the system. PSI has been widely employed by …

Reflection And Refraction Jan 1975

Reflection And Refraction

Calculus-Based General Physics

Sight is certainly one of our most important senses and depends on the interaction of electromagnetic waves in the visible portion of the spectrum with the eye. The use of materials that reflect light and that refract or "bend" light extends throughout our industrialized society. In this module we deal with light traveling in two dimensions and encounterinq the boundaries between media under those conditions in which the wavelength is small compared with the size of the obstacles or apertures. Under such conditions, since diffraction and interference effects are negligible, the principal phenomena occurring at the interfaces, reflection and refraction, …

Toacs : An Interactive Computer Graphic Display Model Of A Theaterwide On-Line Air Combat Simulation, Herman William Blick

Masters Theses

"On-line interactive graphics is a very effective research tool for examining the concepts, components and design parameters of theater warfare involving multiple aircraft. The aim of the present research is to design an on-line computer system which utilizes interactive graphic displays to develop a dynamic, two-sided mathematical model of theaterwide tactical fighter combat operations. The model, called TOACS, is very useful in simulating and evaluating airborne defense systems and the problems common to this type of simulation — such as the formulation of battle strategy for the commitment and guidance of interceptors against threat aircraft -- as well as those …

Synthesis Of 1-Hydroxyethyl-2-Dimethyl Alkylammonium Surfactants And Their Properties In Aqueous Solution, Shin-Shin Chen Jan 1975

Synthesis Of 1-Hydroxyethyl-2-Dimethyl Alkylammonium Surfactants And Their Properties In Aqueous Solution, Shin-Shin Chen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A general synthetic method for the synthesis of a new class of chiral surfactants with reactive OH groups was investigated. The surfactarits were made by quaternizing the corresponding tertiary amine, in isopropyl alcohol. These surfactants with -OH groups may form tightly-packed non-spherical micelles in the presence of WaOH or alkylamine and these .micelles, just like enzyme catalysts, may serve as stereoselective templates. In order to evaluate this stereospecificity, a kinetic study of the reactivity of several chi~al reactants in the presence of these micelles, was initiated. The first-order rate constant K for 4- nitrostyrene formation from p-nitrophenethyl trimethylammonium iodide in …

Analysis Of Rocks And Minerals By Attenuated Total Reflection With Atlas, Donald Franklin Anderson Jan 1975

Analysis Of Rocks And Minerals By Attenuated Total Reflection With Atlas, Donald Franklin Anderson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Routine non-destructive analyses of rocks and minerals in slab or powder form maybe practicable by the application of the technique of attenuated total reflection [ATR] in infrared [IR] spectrophotometry.

An atlas of spectra would serve the analytical chemist and geologist, who in turn would serve the miner, the lapidarist, and other groups interested in rocks and minerals.

No effort has been made to produce an atlas of spectra of rocks and minerals by ATR. No ATR spectra of rocks and minerals were found in the literature. The history of ATR indicates that it is still in its early stages of …
