Bats (Myotis Lucifugus), Arthur M. Greenhall, Stephen C. Frantz Jan 1994

Bats (Myotis Lucifugus), Arthur M. Greenhall, Stephen C. Frantz

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

Despite their ecological value, bats (Myotis lucifugus) are relentlessly and unjustifiably persecuted. Bats, the only mammals that truly fly, belong to the order Chiroptera. Bats in North America are virtually all insectivorous, feeding on a variety of flying insects (exceptions among house bats were noted previously). Most North American bats emit high frequency sounds (ultrasound) inaudible to humans and similar to sonar, in order to avoid obstacles, locate and capture insect prey, and to communicate. Bats often fly about swimming pools, from which they drink or catch insects. Bats use roosting niches that are indoors (human dwellings, outbuildings, …

Deer, Scott R. Craven, Scott E. Hygnstrom Jan 1994

Deer, Scott R. Craven, Scott E. Hygnstrom

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are probably the most widely distributed and best-recognized large mammals in North America. Deer are even-toed ungulates of the family Cervidae. The white-tailed deer is found in every state in the United States except perhaps Alaska and Utah. Deer are creatures of the forest edge rather than the dense, old-growth forest. Browse (leaves, stems, and buds of woody plants) is generally available all year and is a staple food for deer. Breeding occurs from October to January depending on latitude. Deer damage a wide variety of row crops, forage crops, vegetables, fruit trees, nursery stock, …

Eight members of the swallow family Hirundinidae breed in North America: the tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor), violet-green swallow (T. thalassina), purple martin (Progne subis), bank swallow (Riparia riparia), northern rough-winged swallow (Stelgidopteryx serripennis), barn swallow (Hirundo rustica), cave swallow (Hirundo fulva), and the cliff swallow (H. pyrrhonota). Cliff and barn swallows are found throughout most of North America. Four basic conditions are found near most cliff and barn swallow nest sites: (1) an open habitat for foraging, (2) a suitable surface for …

Nuclear Waste Into Glass: Viscosities Of Molten Analogs Of Radioactive Waste Disposal Media, Betty Pang, Kenneth E. Windom Jan 1994

Nuclear Waste Into Glass: Viscosities Of Molten Analogs Of Radioactive Waste Disposal Media, Betty Pang, Kenneth E. Windom

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Disposal of high-level radioactive wastes involves vitrification of a mixture of waste products and borosilicate glass frit. Monitoring the composition of the mixture is critical to the control of the vitrification process, bur is difficult because of the high levels or radioactive components in the mixture. Synthetic non-radioactive analogs of the products from nuclear reprocessing have been prepared and their viscosities measured over a wide range of temperature appropriate to those of the vitrification process. Preliminary results indicate that viscosity is a linear function of composition, under isothermal conditions, for a limited compositional range that encompasses the proportions of waste …

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The focus of this paper is to analyze contemporary literature dealing with public understanding of science, the role of the public in formulation of public policy related to science and technology issues, and the role of science education in combating scientific illiteracy. An attempt is made to synthesize information about the state of scientific literacy (sometimes called technological, ecological, or environmental literacy) and to assess the implications of an increase in the public's knowledge of science and technology in their becoming more involved in the public policy arena. Further, this paper addresses the increasingly important role of formal and non-formal …

Pathway Analysis Of Contaminant Fate And Transport For Generic Soil Standards And Application To Kentucky Underground Storage Tanks, Paul M. Mcginley Jan 1994

Pathway Analysis Of Contaminant Fate And Transport For Generic Soil Standards And Application To Kentucky Underground Storage Tanks, Paul M. Mcginley

KWRRI Research Reports

A generic contaminant migration pathway was used to develop concentration adjustment factors relating soil contamination levels to concentrations in migrating media. These concentration adjustments are based on relatively simple models and parameter values from the literature. The methodology is a screening level tool and is not designed to be used in the site specific analysis where additional information on the source of contamination and the local conditions is available.

The results demonstrate that contaminant concentrations can be very sensitive to the processes which occur during the migration of contaminants.Because the rates of these processes may be site specific it is …

Impact Of Riparian Grass Filter Strips On Surface-Water Quality, Alex W. Fogle, Daniel I. Carey, Billy J. Barfield, Robert L. Blevins, Vasilios P. Evangelou, Cora E. Madison, Shreeram P. Inamdar Jan 1994

Impact Of Riparian Grass Filter Strips On Surface-Water Quality, Alex W. Fogle, Daniel I. Carey, Billy J. Barfield, Robert L. Blevins, Vasilios P. Evangelou, Cora E. Madison, Shreeram P. Inamdar

Information Circular--KGS

The effectiveness of natural riparian grass filter strips in removing sediment and agricultural chemicals from surface runoff was studied using no-tillage and conventional-tillage erosion plots. Runoff from the tillage plots was directed onto 4.57, 9.14, and 13.72 m (15, 30, and 45 ft.) length filter strips, where the inflow and outflow concentrations and sediment size distributions were measured. Trapping efficiencies for sediment and agricultural chemicals typically ranged near or above 90 percent, mainly because of high infiltration rates. The filters also significantly reduced peak discharge concentrations, which reduced the impact of sediment and agricultural chemicals on receiving surface waters.

Investigations Of Iron Cycling In Aquatic Systems, Heather A. Lounsbury Jan 1994

Investigations Of Iron Cycling In Aquatic Systems, Heather A. Lounsbury

Honors Theses

A fully automated luminal-based chemiluminescence flow injection analysis system has been developed for rapid detection of Fe(IT) at natural levels in natural water systems. Similar detection limits are achieved for H202 by fluorometry using an enzyme mediated oxidation of the reagent p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. Using these analytical systems, the rates of Fe(IT) oxidation by dissolved oxygen in 0.7 M NaO have been measured for nanomolar concentrations of Fe(II) over the pH range 7.0 to 8.3. When the production and decomposition of H202 in the system were considered, measured rates were in excellent agreement with a model based on previously reported rate …

Studies Of Silica As A Polymer Support For Regioselective Reactions On Sucrose, Lei Cheng Jan 1994

Studies Of Silica As A Polymer Support For Regioselective Reactions On Sucrose, Lei Cheng

Masters Theses

Sucrose is a material that has potential for replacing oil as an industrial feedstock, at least in some instances. A major difficulty in utilizing sucrose is the lack of regioselectivity in its reactions due to the many reactive sites on the sucrose molecule.

This research is part of an attempt to study the technique of molecular recognition in an effort to increase reaction regioselectivity. Molecular recognition by template imprinting should be a way to create a material that would "recognize" and bind to sucrose in such a way as to block certain of the hydroxyl groups on the sucrose. The …

Effect Of Reservoir Function On Water Quality And Phytoplankton In Lake Taylorville, Christian County, Illinois, Scott Warren Phipps Jan 1994

Effect Of Reservoir Function On Water Quality And Phytoplankton In Lake Taylorville, Christian County, Illinois, Scott Warren Phipps

Masters Theses

As is true for most reservoirs in agricultural areas, Lake Taylorville is currently impacted by excess sedimentation. A system of floodplain wetlands, holding ponds, and sediment basins is being constructed on the tributaries to the reservoir in effort to reduce sediment and nutrient loads. A comprehensive twelve-month assessment of water quality has been conducted to provide a baseline for evaluating the success of this restoration project and to allow predictions regarding future management strategies.

In reservoirs, a continuum of longitudinal gradients result in the establishment of three distinct zones possessing unique physical, chemical and biological properties. The function of these …

Determination Of Budgetary Expertise Among Public School Library Media Specialists In The State Of Florida, Mary Hosken Jan 1994

Determination Of Budgetary Expertise Among Public School Library Media Specialists In The State Of Florida, Mary Hosken

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In 1988, Information Power described skills and duties expected of a school library media specialist. These include familiarity with various forms of educational technology, interpersonal social and communication skills, and proficiency in a wide range of planning and management areas. Simultaneously, restructuring, a movement to site-based management, requires new types of skills of Florida's teachers.

While the importance and complexity of the position of library media specialist has increased, there is concern that some practicing professionals do not have training or experience to address these new obligations. As a benchmark of current expertise in non-instructional duties, this research effort attempted …

A Strategic Plan For Computing And Telecommunications At A University, Dennis J. Huff

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU), a multi-campus, four-year institution of higher education specializing in aeronautic and avionic engineering, has recently made a strong commitment to integration of technology into the University environment. Due to a present lack of vision and planning, ERAU secured the services of Technology Specialists, Inc. (TSI) to manage the technology center and develop a five year plan for technology integration. The author was instrumental in the planning and development of the plan. As research has confirmed, technology planning has traditionally been lacking in higher education institutions. The author followed a method for plan development as suggested by …

The Electronic Bulletin Board As A Means Of Professional Communication Among Physics Teachers, Donald L. Mcgarry Jan 1994

The Electronic Bulletin Board As A Means Of Professional Communication Among Physics Teachers, Donald L. Mcgarry

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Teachers of secondary school physics are often physically isolated from their peers; that is, they do not have as much contact with their physics colleagues as they desire. One reason for this physical isolation is the relatively small population of students enrolled in high school physics courses resulting in small numbers of physics teachers per school. Another is that many physics teachers are teaching physics only part time.

One method of communication among teachers has the potential to improve professional communication among physics teachers. This is the computer operated electronic bulletin board system (BBS). Bulletin board systems and variants have …

Applications And Enabling Technology For Nynet Upstate Corridor, Salim Hariri, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Current advances in telecommunication and computing will have significant impact on the proliferation of high performance computing and communication (HPCC) applications. With these emerging technologies, it is feasible to run parallel and distributed applications across a high speed wide area network which was not possible a few years ago; the high latency and low bandwidth were the main bottlenecks for the wide area network-based computing. This has lead to the deployment of several high speed networks across the country (eg. NYNET). In this report, we describe some of the HPCC applications and our experiences and lessons learned from running them …

Oxidation Of Cyclohexene With Aqueous Potassium Peroxymonosulfate At Ph < 1.7, Wen-Qing Sun Jan 1994

Oxidation Of Cyclohexene With Aqueous Potassium Peroxymonosulfate At Ph < 1.7, Wen-Qing Sun

Theses

Glycols are often used as starting materials for pharmaceuticals. They are currently manufactured by reacting alkenes with organic peroxy acids in organic solutions that contain chlorinated solvents. The aim of this research is to find ways to avoid the use of hazardous organic solvents in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals in order to prevent pollution. Our approach is to find alternative synthetic methods using water as solvent.

Based on literature information, it was decided to determine if the aqueous potassium peroxymonosulfate oxidation of water-immiscible cyclohexene at room temperature can be scaled up to become a new method to manufacture glycols. Acidic …

Issues And Obstacles With Multimedia Authoring, Fillia Makedon, Samuel A. Rebelsky, Matthew Cheyney, Charles Owen, Peter Gloor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Unlike traditional authoring, multimedia authoring involves making hard choices, forecasting technological evolution and adapting to software and hardware technology changes. It is, perhaps, an unstable field of endeavor for an academic to be in. Yet, it is important that academics are, in fact, part of this process. This paper discusses some of the common threads shared by three dissimilar cases of multimedia authoring which we have experimented with, that of multimedia conference proceedings, multimedia courseware development and multimedia information kiosks. We consider these applications from an academic point of view and review the benefits and pitfalls of academic development while …

Purification And Analysis Of Protein Synthetic Initiation Factors From Volvox Carteri, Kathie L. Pooler Jan 1994

Purification And Analysis Of Protein Synthetic Initiation Factors From Volvox Carteri, Kathie L. Pooler

Honors Theses

Volvox carteri, a multi-celled green algae, can grow synchronously given a sixteen hour light period followed by an eight hour dark period, a cycle which is repeated for a 48 hour growth cycle total. Near the end of each light period, reproductive cells divide rapidly resulting in the differentiation of ceIls. When the dark period begins, this differentiation stops and the cells remain dormant with little protein synthesis or differentiation occurring. Immediately after the lights come back on, however, the cells again undergo rapid protein synthesis and complete their differentiation. Previous studies have concluded that Volvox carteri discontinue protein synthesis …

Kinetic And Chemical Modification Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From E. Coli, Fang Jenny Zhao Jan 1994

Kinetic And Chemical Modification Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From E. Coli, Fang Jenny Zhao

Masters Theses

Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) is the enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of malate to oxaloacetate in the TCA cycle. The object of this research was to discipher the mechanism of the reaction and the function of the enzyme. MDH from E. Coli was purified and analyzed by chemical modification studies using diethylpyrocarbonate. Results indicate the existence of a histidine residue at the active site necessary for catalysis. From kinetic studies, a group required for catalysis with a pKa of 8.5 was observed, which we believe to be a histidine residue. These studies indicate that MDH from E. Coli has a …
