Evaluation Of Solid Phase Extraction Followed By Supercritical Fluid Elution Of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds In Toxicity Characteristic Leachates, William Edward Corl Iii Jul 1997

Evaluation Of Solid Phase Extraction Followed By Supercritical Fluid Elution Of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds In Toxicity Characteristic Leachates, William Edward Corl Iii

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) to determine the potential for unknown wastes to leach haz.ardous constituents into the environment. Methods currently being used for the extraction of semi-volatile organic compounds from aqueous TCLP leachates involve acid/base partitioning into methylene chloride. The concentrated extract is then analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The methods are either timeconsuming or labor intensive and they generate significant volumes of haz.ardous wastes themselves. Considering the haz.ards and disposal costs of methylene chloride wastes, great interest has been elicited by the EPA in other extraction techniques which would reduce …

The Study Of Wave-Blocking And Current Effects On Nonlinear Interactions Of Shallow-Water Waves Using Advanced Boussinesq Models, Qin Chen Jul 1997

The Study Of Wave-Blocking And Current Effects On Nonlinear Interactions Of Shallow-Water Waves Using Advanced Boussinesq Models, Qin Chen

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The first part of this work focuses on the derivation of enhanced Boussinesq-type equations for the combined motion of waves and currents in shallow water areas.

The strategy proposed in this work is to couple two known methods which are the sponge layer concept suitable for short waves and Sommerfeld radiation condition for currents. This coupling method provides satisfactory non-reflective boundaries for the simulation of fully coupled wave/current motion as demonstrated by the numerical experiments. We verify the model against the well known solutions based on the existing theories and good agreement has been observed. The numerical results confirm the …

Solvent-Induced Interactions Between Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Polyatomic Sheets In Water And Hypothetical Nonpolar Water, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Hideki Tanaka Jun 1997

Solvent-Induced Interactions Between Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Polyatomic Sheets In Water And Hypothetical Nonpolar Water, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Hideki Tanaka

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions are two major intermolecular forces between hydrophobic nonpolar and hydrophilic polar sites of macromolecules or materials surfaces in solvents. To further understand these two interactions at the microscopic level, an idealized polyatomic model is devised, which includes hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and partially hydrophilic polyatomic planar square molecular sheets. The hydrophobic molecular sheet is composed of the Lennard-Jones particles while the hydrophilic molecular sheet consists of positive and negative charge sites. In the framework of the extended reference interaction site model integral equation theory the solvent-induced interactions (or the potential of mean forces) between two parallel molecular sheets …

Examination Of The Combustion Morphology Of Ziconium Carbide Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Brian R. Newbold Jun 1997

Examination Of The Combustion Morphology Of Ziconium Carbide Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Brian R. Newbold

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Calculation of viscous particle damping of acoustic combustion instability in solid propellant motors requires an understanding of the combustion behavior of added particles and oxides. A simple hydrogen/oxygen flame was used to ignite carefully sieved zirconium carbide particles which were impacted on slides at different levels below the burner.

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that zirconium carbide has a complex heterogeneous combustion morphology. Initially, particles are partly vitreous and crystalline with a complex surface area. Upon ignition, particles round, but soon wrinkle as zirconium oxide deposits on the surface. Such morphology information is useful to refine viscous damping calculations.

Microgravity Effects On Water Flow And Distribution In Unsaturated Porous Media, Scott B. Jones, Dani Or Jun 1997

Microgravity Effects On Water Flow And Distribution In Unsaturated Porous Media, Scott B. Jones, Dani Or

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Several aspects of the physical processes of liquid flow and distribution within partially saturated porous media are altered in the reduced gravity conditions (microgravity) of orbiting spacecraft. The objectives of this study were to simulate and test measured flow and distribution in porous media from a microgravity environment using conventional capillary flow theory. Two past microgravity experiments studying water supply and uptake in porous media took place on a U.S. space shuttle, titled ASC-1, and on the Russian space station Mir, titled Greenhouse-2. Data from microgravity and ground experiments were simulated using similar physical flow models by elimination of the …

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith Jun 1997

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith

Utah Space Grant Consortium

NASA needs sensors to accurately monitor the water and atmospheric quality in its space habitat. Concerns for health and safety necessitate the development of sensors to measure common atmospheric gas concentrations, as well as trace contaminants (low ppm or ppb), including both combustible and noncombustible gases. The University of Utah is developing an enhanced Raman monitoring system to detect airborne, environmental contaminants. We have collected laboratory data to benchmark current laser Raman technology for gas analysis, which provides a reference for future developments. The objective of this project was to design a prototype gas-phase monitor, incorporating new technology that would …

Dissertations

A detailed hydrogeologic study of the Kalamazoo River and its interaction with the groundwater was completed near Parchment, Michigan. The Kalamazoo River between Portage Creek and Allegan Dam is a Federal superfund site due to PCB contamination trapped in its sediments. The City of Parchment pumps all of its drinking water from a glacial aquifer 850 feet from the Kalamazoo River. This study focused on the hydrogeology and groundwater/surface interaction of the area through the use of surface and downhole geophysics, installation of monitoring wells and peizometers, seepage meters and chemical sampling. It was determined that the Kalamazoo River is …

Geophysical Investigation Of Anomalous Conductivity Associated With A Hydrocarbon Contamination Site, Mike S. Nash Jun 1997

Geophysical Investigation Of Anomalous Conductivity Associated With A Hydrocarbon Contamination Site, Mike S. Nash

Masters Theses

The high electrical conductivity measured from chemical analyses from ground water below a hydrocarbon contaminated site was the focus of this study. Most theoretical studies have indicated that the electrical conductivity of hydrocarbon contamination is lower than that of the surrounding medium. Geochemical studies at other sites have shown that areas of dissolved fuel oil plume have a higher electrical conductivity. Six methods: Self Potential, Mise-a-la-Masse, Vertical Electrical Sounding, Dipole-Dipole Resistivity Profiling, Electromagnetic Induction, and Ground Penetrating Radar were all used in an attempt to see which method( s) could identify regions of high conductivity.

The findings of this study …

Sampling And Analysis Of Trace Level Volatile Organic Compounds From Air Via Membrane Permeation, Naihong Zhu May 1997

Sampling And Analysis Of Trace Level Volatile Organic Compounds From Air Via Membrane Permeation, Naihong Zhu

Dissertations

The objective of this study is to develop air sampling techniques using membrane permeation. Two novel techniques for sampling and analysis of trace level VOCs from air via membrane permeation are presented:

  1. selective concentration of VOCs into a canister using a membrane permeator;
  2. on-line membrane extraction for direct introduction of VOCs from air emissions into a gas chromatograph.

In the membrane permeator-canister sampling system (MPCS), the air sample containing trace level VOCs as well as some interferences such as moisture are passed through the membrane module. Polydimethyl siloxane membrane used in this research is highly permeable to organic compounds, but …

Assessment Of Potential Operating Benefits Incurred By Implementing Iso 14001 : Five Case Studies From The New Jersey Chemical Industry, Stefanie Gitter

Theses

Environmental management is an important aspect of strategic planning and competitiveness for many businesses. Environmental management systems (EMS) are operating policies that are established to help a company measure progress towards goals set forth in a strategic environmental plan. A growing number of EMS models are being used by countries and industry groups, so the International Standards Organization (ISO) developed one model to prevent duplicate efforts which can result when companies try to meet the import requirements of different countries.

The ISO-EMS model is a series of standards, and ISO 14001 is the first to be published. Companies will be …

Development Of Methods For Field Determination Of Chromium (Vi) In Water And Groundwater, David John Chesbro May 1997

Development Of Methods For Field Determination Of Chromium (Vi) In Water And Groundwater, David John Chesbro

Theses

In this study, methods for the determination of chromium (VI) in fresh water at low ppb levels for the use under field conditions were developed. The plan was to devise a simple and inexpensive on-site field method which would be useable by people who are not professional chemists. An investigation was carried out to develop a preconcentration and determination procedure for the analysis of chromium (VI) using anion-exchange membranes and/or resins. The chromium (VI) would be sorbed to the solid support and then treated with 1 ,5-diphenylcarabzide, a specific colorimetric reagent for chromium (VI), which forms a red complex upon …

Electrodeposition Of Amorphous Fe-Cr Alloy Coating, Danhong Cheng, Weiyi Xu, Yiqin Qin, Liqun Hua, Zhongyan Zhang May 1997

Electrodeposition Of Amorphous Fe-Cr Alloy Coating, Danhong Cheng, Weiyi Xu, Yiqin Qin, Liqun Hua, Zhongyan Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The amorphous Fe-Cr alloy coatings were obtained by controlling the composition of bath operation conditions. It was found that the pH value, the current density and the content of chromium in Fe-Cr alloy coatings effect the amorphous structure of the coatings. The result of anodic polarization shows that the corrosion resistance of the amorphous coatings in acidic media is higher than the corrosion resistance of the crystal ones.

Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin May 1997

Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin

Honors Theses

The green alga Volvox carteri exhibits a virtual absence of protein synthesis in the dark, but begins synthesizing proteins necessary for growth and development almost immediately after exposure to the light. The regulation of protein synthesis in this system is known to be translational since extracts prepared in the dark have identical pools and quantities of mRNA as extracts prepared in the light (Kirk and Kirk, 1983). Exploration of the mechanism of translational regulation has led us to consider the importance of signal transduction pathways. By using a variety of commercially available drugs that affect specific components of known signaling …

Optimization And Spectrophotometric Comparisons Of Radiochromic Dye (2,3,5-Triphenyl-2-H-Tetrazolium Chloride) In Gelatin And Agar Models: Gamma And Electron Beam Irradiations, Lakindra P. Frances

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

After irradiation, the colorless radiochromic dye, 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride (TTC), changes to red triphenyl formazan pigment, and the distribution of absorbed dose in the tissue-equivalent gelatin and agar media can be studied. Using solutions 8% by weight gelatin and 8% by weight agar, both with 3 mM citric acid as buffer and 4 mM concentration of dye, the radiation-induced absorbency of a sample slowly decreased with increasing wavelength. In the gel, TTC is very light sensitive, and 7 days after irradiation, becomes less stable. The samples were irradicated by gamma and electron beam. Nine different doses were used for the 60 …

A Vhdl-93 Hardware Description Browser, Laura C. Debrock, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper describes the design and implementation of the VHDL-93 Hardware Description Browser, which is a tool for the intelligent retrieval of information from VHDL designs. The Browser consists of two UNIX processes: a TCL/TK Graphical User Interface and a Prolog search engine. The GUI elicits queries from the user and submits them to the Prolog search engine via a two-way communication pipe. The search engine satisfies queries by traversing a forest of parse trees corresponding to the associated VHDL designs. The results are then sent to the GUI for posting.

Two public-domain tools were used to implement the Browser: …

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard May 1997

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ability for wetlands to purify contaminated water is not a new concept. Natural wetlands have been cleansing water within our environment for ages. After studying the process of natural wetlands the same concept was applied to municipal waste. It is the success of constructed wetlands treating municipal waste that created the new idea for the application of a wetland system to treat wastewater from livestock facilities. Through proper design and management, constructed wetlands may be useful for reducing the nutrient concentration of waste (Rieck el al., 1996). Taking into consideration the higher nutrient loads of livestock waste, the same …

Predictable File Access Latency For Multimedia, Dan Revel, Crispin Cowan, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multimedia applications are sensitive to I/O latency and jitter when accessing data in secondary storage. Transparent adaptive prefetching (TAP) uses software feedback to provide multimedia applications with file system quality of service (QoS) guarantees. We are investigating how QoS requirements can be communicated and how they can be met by adaptive resource management. A preliminary test of adaptive prefetching is presented.

Dephasing In Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering From Organic Materials, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer May 1997

Dephasing In Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering From Organic Materials, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer

Faculty Scholarship

The spectral content of hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) was studied with solutions of disperse red-1 (DR1) in acetone at a specific fundamental wavelength. Dephasing can occur when the effective lifetime of the virtual state approaches a two-photon resonance. Experiments were developed that will measure all six observables in HRS by observing the scattering at 45°, continuously varying the phase of the fundamental by rotating a quarter-waveplate, and using another quarter-waveplate with a linear polarizer to analyze the harmonic. These experiments proved the validity of Kleinmann symmetry in near-resonant and far off-resonant regimes.
