Database Security: Evaluation Of A Multi-Policy Access Control Model, Fei Dong
Database Security: Evaluation Of A Multi-Policy Access Control Model, Fei Dong
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As an increasing number of organizations become dependent on access to their data stored in the database, the need for adequate security measures is becoming more and more critical. Enforcing data protection means safeguarding data from unauthorized or improper disclosures or modifications. Access control policies should be independent of the mechanisms that will implement the physical control of access: this allows control mechanism to be available for different policies. Although considerable work was done on access control models and related mechanisms for databases (Castano & Fugini, 1994), current access control models and mechanisms are not flexible enough to meet the …

Buckets: Aggregative, Intelligent Agents For Publishing, Michael L. Nelson, Kurt Maly, Stewart N. T. Shen, Mohammad Zubair
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Buckets are an aggregative, intelligent construct for publishing in digital libraries. The goal of research projects is to produce information. This information is often instantiated in several forms, differentiated by semantic types (report, software, video, datasets, etc.). A given semantic type can be further differentiated by syntactic representations as well (PostScript version, PDF version, Word version, etc.). Although the information was created together and subtle relationships can exist between them, different semantic instantiations are generally segregated along currently obsolete media boundaries. Reports are placed in report archives, software might go into a software archive, but most of the data and …
Vector Geometry And Applications To Three-Dimensional Computer Graphics, Rory Morrison
Vector Geometry And Applications To Three-Dimensional Computer Graphics, Rory Morrison
Theses : Honours
The mathematics behind algorithms involved in generating three-dimensional images on a computer has stemmed from the analysis of the processes of sight and vision. These processes have been modeled to provide methods of visualising three-dimensional data sets. The applications of such visualisations are varied. This project will study some of the mathematics that IS used in three-dimensional graphics applications
The Determination Of The Potential Of Australian Native Plants To Phytoremediate Lead, Desmond Dev Menon
The Determination Of The Potential Of Australian Native Plants To Phytoremediate Lead, Desmond Dev Menon
Theses : Honours
Industrial activities and natural occurrences of mineral ores can both result in the presence of high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil. These toxic metals have been shown to adversely affect human health and the environment. Currently, three main technologies are being used to solve this problem of soil contamination. These are incineration, landfill construction and physico-chemical treatments. The economic and environmental costs of each of these technologies tend to outweigh the merits of their application, especially where contaminated areas are small. These techniques do not necessarily remove the heavy metals from the soil, and can also inhibit biological …

1080 Operational Procedures Manual - Second Edition, Agriculture Western Australia
Biosecurity published reports
Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is an extremely toxic substance which can be a danger to humans if handled incorrectly. At the same time 1080 is the most effective and efficient poison for the control of Western Australia's main vertebrate pest species including rabbits, wild dogs and foxes. One of the main reasons for its usefulness in Western Australia is that many native animals have a high tolerance to it and so may not be affected by baiting.
Industry Resource Protection Program (IRPP) This program, part of Agriculture Western Australia, supports feral animal control carried out by its staff and community groups. …
Substituted Polythiophenes From Highly Reactive Zinc Reagents, Reuben D. Rieke
Substituted Polythiophenes From Highly Reactive Zinc Reagents, Reuben D. Rieke
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
A novel Zerovalent zinc species and an organozinc reagent are disclosed. The zerovalent zinc species is directly pro duced by reaction of a reducing agent on a zinc salt, preferably Zn(CN)2. The organozinc reagent results from the reaction of the zerovalent zinc species and an organic compound having one or more stable anionic leaving groups. These organozinc reagents include a wide spectrum of functional groups in the organic radical, and are useful in a variety of reactions schemes.

The semipermeable membrane device (SPMD) technology was employed to determine the presence of bioavailable organochlorine pesticides (OCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water of the main stem of the lower Missouri River and three of its tributaries. The SPMDs were deployed in 1994 following the extensive flood of 1993. Specifically, the SPMDs were deployed for 28 days at Wilson State Park, IA; Nebraska City, NE; Parkville, MO; the Kansas River in Kansas City, KS; Napoleon, MO; the Grand River; Glasgow, MO; the Missouri River upstream from the confluence of the Gasconade River; the Gasconade River; and …
Seismic Rock-Physics Model For Carbonates At Low Effective Stress Levels
Seismic Rock-Physics Model For Carbonates At Low Effective Stress Levels
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
When considering the seismic response from the Dammam aquifer, the first required component is a simple model relating porosity and stress state to frame moduli assuming a carbonate matrix. We explored two such relationships, one based on the empirical regression presented by Domenico (1984) and a second using the critical porosity model of Nur et al. (1998) calibrated to the ultrasonic measurements of Nur and Simmons (1969). Once frame properties for a given porosity/pressure state were estimated, the effect of fluid changes were calculated using the low-frequency form of the Biot-Gassmann model, better known as Gassmann fluid substitution (Mavko …
Evolution Of The Aeluroid Carnivora: Diversity Of The Earliest Aeluroids From Eurasia (Quercy, Hsanda-Gol) And The Origin Of Felids, Robert M. Hunt Jr.
Evolution Of The Aeluroid Carnivora: Diversity Of The Earliest Aeluroids From Eurasia (Quercy, Hsanda-Gol) And The Origin Of Felids, Robert M. Hunt Jr.
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The oldest known fossil aeluroids are from Lower Oligocene sediments in France (Quercy) and Upper Eocene-Lower Oligocene sediments in Mongolia. These small (< 5 kg) carnivorans are primarily represented by mandibles, with hypercarnivorous dentitions in almost all lineages. The six aeluroid genera from France and those from Mongolia share a common dental pattern despite their geographic separation near the extremes of the Eurasian landmass. This similarity is not surprising, however, because faunal exchange across Eurasia at this time is documented not only by populations of small aeluroids but also by small arctoid carnivorans. Basicrania of Oligocene aeluroids are preserved only in the Quercy deposits. The auditory regions of two genera from Quercy (Palaeoprionodon, Stenoplesictis), and of two additional aeluroid genera (Stenogale, Proailurus) known only from mandibles at Quercy (but matched with congeneric mandibles with associated basicrania from early Miocene sediments at St.-Gerand), reveal a common basicranial morphotype. The living African palm civet Nandinia binotata retains a basicranial and auditory anatomy closely approaching the ancestral aeluroid morphotype. European paleontologists working with the Quercy faunas have regarded several of these aeluroids as early members of the Viverridae and …
Cadmium Malonate Complexation In Aqueous Sodium Trifluoromethanesulfonate Media To 75°C; Including Dissociation Quotients Of Malonic Acid, Moira K. Ridley, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski, Richard Kettler
Cadmium Malonate Complexation In Aqueous Sodium Trifluoromethanesulfonate Media To 75°C; Including Dissociation Quotients Of Malonic Acid, Moira K. Ridley, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski, Richard Kettler
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The molal formation quotients for cadmium-malonate complexes were measured potentiometrically from 5 to 75°C, at ionic strengths of 0.1, 0.3, 0.6 and 1.0 molal in aqueous sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate (NaTf) media. In addition, the stepwise dissociation quotients for malomc acid were measured in the same medium from 5 to 100°C, at ionic strengths of 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 molal by the same method. The dissociation quotients for malonic acid were modeled as a function of temperature and ionic strength with empirical equations formulated such that the equilibrium constants at infinite dilution were consistent, within the error estimates, with the malonic …
Higher Order Isotropic Velocity Grids In Lattice Methods, Pavol Pavlo, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala
Higher Order Isotropic Velocity Grids In Lattice Methods, Pavol Pavlo, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Kinetic lattice methods are a very attractive representation of nonlinear macroscopic systems because of their inherent parallelizability on multiple processors and their avoidance of the nonlinear convective terms. By uncoupling the velocity lattice from the spatial grid, one can employ higher order (non-space-filling) isotropic lattices-lattices which greatly enhance the stable parameter regions, particularly in thermal problems. In particular, the superiority of the octagonal lattice over previous models used in 2D (hexagonal or square) and 3D (projected face-centered hypercube) is shown.

An Integrated Web-Based Ill System For Singapore Libraries, Schubert Foo, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The paper proposes an integrated Web-based inter-library loan (ILL) system to replace and enhance the existing manual-based ILL system used by Singapore libraries. It describes the system requirements that must be supported in order to make it a viable and acceptable solution to all participating libraries. Subsequently, it presents the client-server Web-based system architecture, database design and Java development platform that are used to implement the system. The new system exhibits a host of advantages over the manual system including the minimising of human resource by eliminating form-filling and other forms of paper work completely, improving the access and speed …
Contaminated Communities: A Video Documentary Of The Alberton, Montana Mixed-Chemical Spill And An Analysis Of How Its Effects On Toxics Victims Fits Into A Larger Contamination Framework From A Political Ecology Perspective, Lisa A. Mosca
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The small rural mountain town of Alberton, MT located 32 miles west of Missoula, MT was the 1996 site of the largest contamination event in railroad history involving a mixture of chemicals. On April 11, 1996 a Montana Rail Link train derailed just west of the town of Alberton, leaking 130,000 pounds of chlorine gas, 17,000 of potassium cresylate (spent oil refinery waste), and 85 dry bulk pounds of sodium chlorate into the Alberton environment. Approximately 1000 people were evacuated from their homes, many for the seventeen day evacuation period that followed. The video documentary project that I embarked on …
A Framework For Controlling Quality Of Sessions In Multimedia Systems, Alaa S. Youssef
A Framework For Controlling Quality Of Sessions In Multimedia Systems, Alaa S. Youssef
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Collaborative multimedia systems demand overall session quality control beyond the level of quality of service (QoS) pertaining to individual connections in isolation of others. At every instant in time, the quality of the session depends on the actual QoS offered by the system to each of the application streams, as well as on the relative priorities of these streams according to the application semantics. We introduce a framework for achieving QoSess control and address the architectural issues involved in designing a QoSess control laver that realizes the proposed framework. In addition, we detail our contributions for two main components of …

Module Embedding, Atanas Radenski
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
This paper proposes a code reuse mechanism called module embedding that enables the building of new modules from existing ones through inheritance, overriding of procedures, and overriding of types; the paper also describes an implementation scheme for this mechanism. Module embedding is beneficial when modules and classes are used in combination and need to be extended together, or when modules are more appropriate medium than classes.

Part 1 of this thesis deals with the role that it -electron density plays in the formation of it -complexes in electrophilic aromatic substitution. Using commercial and synthetic compounds of varying it-electron density, the fact that % -complexes actually exist in these species was determined by a mass spectral investigation that was designed to monitor alkyl side-chain isomerizaitons. Also, the amount of it-complex was determined for each compound by measuring the amount of alkyl carbenium ion loss in each compound's mass spectrum. Found within the systems was an internal trend showing that the greater the amount of 7t-electron density in …

Flow And Congestion Control For Internet Streaming Applications, Shanwei Cen, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The emergence of streaming multimedia players provides users with low latency audio and video content over the Internet. Providing high-quality, best-effort, real-time multimedia content requires adaptive delivery schemes that fairly share the available network bandwidth with reliable data protocols such as TCP. This paper proposes a new flow and congestion control scheme, SCP (Streaming Control Protocol) , for real-time streaming of continuous multimedia data across the Internet. The design of SCP arose from several years of experience in building and using adaptive real-time streaming video players. SCP addresses two issues associated with real-time streaming. First, it uses a congestion control …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The field of public participation is a distinct, but yet unpolished facet within the public relations industry. While the purpose of and need for public participation are becoming increasingly clear, many remain unaware or unconvinced of its advantages. Likewise, even among those who endorse the necessity of public participation, its methods and strategies continue to be a mystery to most.
One industry, in particular, that has recognized and embraced the benefits of conducting public participation is the water utility industry. The purpose of this thesis is to 1) crystallize the understanding of why public participation is a necessary and advantageous …
